An Idiot Tried to Hog a Spot by Standing in Front of It. Should I Be Petty?

My friends and I were in Melbourne CBD this evening and were about to turn into a 90 deg parking spot.. to be met with an idiot standing right in front of the spot refusing to move. He claims that his friend is doing a turn and is just around the corner and that he is reserving the spot for his friend - called him an asshole and told him that he isn’t a car and should not be hogging a spot. His response? “How am I am asshole if I’m not being aggressive?”

Our confrontation lasted for 1.5 mins before we drove off to another spot that freed up, only because we were across 2 lanes and were holding up traffic behind us.

Obvs we have videos + dashcam footage and images of him and his friend + his friend’s car plate deets. Thinking if we should give karma a hand (+ just wanting to be extremely petty as he completely ruined our evening) by posting these vids/pics somewhere. Thoughts?

Dashcam just the confused car wannabe guy not the guy's friend's plates. You really should try to make it funny and make a few $ off it on Youtube.

I felt annoyed watching this. She actually ran to block the parking spot. Disgusting behaviour.

    • +2

OMG. I was reading this site thinking "why are these people getting so annoyed at this? I am so smart etc etc" and then I saw that video.

My blood is boiling!!! What the heck??? That is infuriating!!!

      • hover your mouse over 0:29 and keep clicking. she does this little shimmy and eye roll with hands in front pockets. definitely needs to be turned into a gif or remixed to music or something.

I've had the same thing. Continued driving into the space and made him move. Parked my car and carried on with my day, with him yelling about calling the police.

If people don't call out and stop behaviour like this, it will become more common place.

    • The spot saver should have called the phone ( call them bluff ). If they really do, they’ll be the one in trouble. That would have been a spectacle to watch :)

      • +8

Yes, I did tell him to go ahead with the call to the cops. It's a car park, not a person park.

    • +7

Don't you get worried that they might key your car? I've encountered these idiots in the past and just drove away cause I feel like theres a real risk of them being petty enough to key my car - not worth the headache.

      • +1

At the time it was just an X-Trail which I didn't really care about. I have dash cam as well these days.

        • -1

360 dash cam? Do dash cams even pick up keying or tyre slashing?

          • +1

@Ughhh: Would have had old mates face on it with him standing in the spot, and making a big fuss. If someone wants to key my car at a relatively popular spot, they would be pretty stupid.

          • @Ughhh: Yes as a whole system, side cameras were installed under the side mirror.

      • i had something similar happen went to bunnings got a camera that runs on USB power and has a built in battery got 2 it covers full 360 that way and has motion detection if damage on car and they are the ones near it take the video to cops easy solved and get them to pay insurance

  • +16

Get out and also stand in the spot… holding it for your friend. It'll become one of those competitions where the last person with their hand on the car wins it…. Bonus, you'd have a story to tell when you're both waiting for bail money.

    • This is epic.

  • +10

I get why you be mad, something similar happened to me too
The best thing to do is just let them have it because.
    1. You could get into a life threatening situation. Why risk it.
    2. Even if you "win" the spot, they now know where your car is parked and they could key it.
    3. If you let them have the spot, now you know where their car is and you could exact your revenge ?

    • Upvote for # 3.

      • +1

Find a small rock or four and put them under the valve caps. Tighten just enough so a little air leaks out.

        Revenge served cold.

  • +21

I mean you could just shoot them. Totally justified given the circumstances.

    • Finally, someone said what we were all thinking.

  • -6

My friend has a cricket bat in the boot for this exact situation. NExt time bring a bat.

    • +12

      Get better friends.

    • +4

If you're going to use a cricket bat you might as well just use the car.

This ends so badly. It's really silly to look for violence. You'll eventually find someone better at it than you with less restraint.

      • Meh….lots of tradies carry wrenches and hammers too.

  • -7

Calling someone an idiot but little did they realise they've just wasted time and also got flustered over a non-issue.

Think about it, who's the idiot.

I'd say the guy standing in the parking spot.

    Meanwhile in Australia….

    • +2

Someone posted "Meanwhile in Australia…." In a thread?

  • +5

Very brave for that guy to park in that spot following an altercation. If they were driving a new car and op did not give a crap, don't be surprised to see some modifications. They were lucky.

    • Not sure you're getting nagged but you're not wrong. Imagine holding a spot and not having your car keyed lol.

      • +2

Not everyone will be nice like the op. It wont be hard to get away with it. People don't like hearing the truth so they neg cause that's all the power they have lol.
People over estimate how much cops will care about this little stuff.

        • +2

          Be me
Angry at OP because I was stuck behind him while he had an altercation
          Key that bloke's friend's car
It'll probably get blamed on OP
Get vengeance on both of them

        • Destruction derby. 😵

    record it, news.com.au
    move on

  • Why does everyone go straight to keying a car or even slashing tyres?
Can just as easy let down a tyre or two without causing permanent damage, thus getting your point across and still being able to hold your chin up

    • +5

All this retaliation is just lowering yourself to their muppet level. I don't get it.

I'm guessing that if you just deflate their tyres that these muppets are so naive that they probably just think they got a flat.

      • +5

Wow, what a coincidence, all 4 of my tyres went flat at the same time and all within an hour of me stealing a parking spot

  • +1

I’ve seen it before in Melb CBD, queen vic markets specifically. It’s so annoying. But unless you’re willing to run them over there’s nothing you can do is there? I just move on. It’s a dick move but whatever. Life is long.

    • It's not legal to obstruct parking bays without a proper permit though, so the pedestrian is in the wrong and could be fined if a cop happened by at the right moment.

      • is that cops job, or council?

anyways i feel they'd let it slide like jaywalking
        (unless there was enough commotion)

      • Fair enough, so the solution is to sit in the road while you call a cop and wait for them to come. I still think it’s just easier to move on and find another park.

  • +1

Happened to us in a busy sydney shopping center. My partner didn t hold his words against the asian lady holding the spot for her "daughter" who is coming soon … different culture, different understanding of "first come , first serve". As i told my partner , we re not in a rush and just let her have it…. So, yes. It s quite annoying and any normal person will get quite angry at that and will seek revenge. But at the end of the day it s just a parking spot. No need to shame, name or wasting your time and energy with some "what if…"

    • +4

      No need to shame, name
words against the asian lady holding the spot for her "daughter"

Can see what you have done there😆

      • -5

This a cultural thing for asians and some people from arabs country. And yes, i used the word asian without being specific of her real ethnicity… then people can assume whatever they want. As for most people who has no knowledge, they picture in their mind "asian=chinese" without knowing that Asia is a continent like Europe and includes a lot of different ethnicities…. not eveyone with eye shape almond is from China or call chinese….and when i was saying "no need to shame or name" it was more a reference to the video/dashcams you owned… as i ve got our altercations record but will i post it online? No. Will i keep it? No. After a couple days, my dashcam will erase the memory… can we talk about it? Yes. Because this is how you bring awareness on the different upbringing…

        • +5

Next time leave the ethnicity out of it. Has no bearing on the story.

          • +4

@Autonomic: Can you make "journalists" do the same please

          • +3

@Autonomic: if its a trait common to a certain ethnicity bcos its not considered rude overseas then i can see why its pertinent. eg in china, people dont queue like we do. they queue in concentric circles. normal there. rude here

            • -1

@belongsinforums: Unless you interviewed them and saw their ancestry.com results you don't know where they came from or what their ethnicity is. Unless you did some kind of proper survey into the demographics of who stands in parking spaces then you don't know if it's a common trait.

    • +1

Her behaviour has nothing to do with the fact that she's Asian. The fact you attribute it to her culture demonstrates your prejudice.

      • -1

Reaching there. Visit certain asian countries and see how social norms are different to here. That's like saying that pointing out that Japanese bow is racist

  • +2

I have encountered this a couple of times over the last 12 years. It made me mad but not "completely ruined our evening" mad, since I found an alternative parking spot. Just move on, more important things in life to stress about..

  • Genuine question - is this method of "holding" a parking spot legal/within road rules?

    • I suspect it’s not in the road rules.

    • +1

      The rules are…

      There ain't no rules

      Leo, Grease, 1978

    • You are asking if it’s legal to stand in a road related area blocking passage of a vehicle?

There’s definitely rules about not running people over.

    • No it is not legal to obstruct a parking bay without a permit.

  • +7

    Offensive Options:
Blare the honk at the person.
Get down and have a holding competition silently.
Get down and have a verbal assult.
Get down and have painful physical contact with mask on.

    Peaceful Options:
Move on find a nearby carpark, return and slash tyres and smash windows when no one is looking.

    • +2

I laughed at the silent holding competition. I probably imagined something different to what you meant.

Also, always carry broken spark plug ceramics for your random window smashing needs, and a tyre valve extractor for your tyre deflating needs.

Optionally, some cash for a taxi home ride home after you make bail.

    • Or the dog poo option for those that don’t want to take it home… can let it biodegrade on the car handles and inlet vents.

    • Get down and have a holding competition silently.

I like this. Have your passenger hop out and wait in the space with them. Only thing they say is ‘I’m holding this space for my friend’. Then you go and park elsewhere and join them.

  • +7

Ah yes this happened to me before. The guy kept going on about saving the spot for his customer (it was in a shopping centre) and I told him to move it.

Then he said what he's doing is not illegal blah blah blah, I said - if I farted in your face that's not illegal either but that's a shit thing to do, like what you're doing. He called me rude and I left. HAHAHA.

    • +2

He called me rude and I left.

You should have gotten out of your car and pulled down your pants and farted and see what his response was…..

    • It is illegal to obstruct a parking bay without a permit.

      • Even on private land like a shopping centre?

  • -6

Another pointless use for dashcam footage I suppose. I don’t get why people buy these things. They were never needed for decades of driving in Australia. The road rules are pretty clear. If you hit someone from behind it’s your fault. It sounds like you are now trying to find a use for your dash am footage of a person standing in a car park.

    • +6

If you hit someone from behind it’s your fault.

There's 1001 other different ways to have a collision.
Now imagine you were driving by yourself late at night and someone ran a red light and collided with your vehicle. They get out of the car, check if you're okay., apologise for not seeing the red light, blah blah. Come insurance time, the other driver and his mates all write a stat dec to saying they had a green light and you're the one that ran a red light.

Would you then wish you had a dashcam? People might admit fault at the scene, but when it comes to insurance, stories tend to differ. It happens a lot!

      • -2

dont they have cameras at intersections so you cant lie because ull get find out?

        • +4

Have you ever managed to get footage from those cameras? I suspect you'll at least need a court order.

          • @bobbified: And how does one get said court order….?

            • @Zachary: Well, you'll need to go to court and get them to agree with you that whoever holds the footage should release it. And that's IF they have the footage and haven't overwritten it. You don't automatically have the rights to it.

In other words, unless someone is severely injured or killed, you're unlikely to get it.

              • -1

@bobbified: Thanks for suggesting we should lie to any traffic infringements that doesn't involved a severely injured or killed person. But I couldn't get out of my 180Km/hr speeding ticket because they used a camera on me - but I didn't even injure or kill anyone from speeding….they didn't get a court order to use that camera evidence on me that I was speeding…

                • @Zachary:

Thanks for suggesting we should lie to any traffic infringements that doesn't involved a severely injured or killed person

What drugs are you on? I'm telling you things as they are and you automatically jump to the conclusion that I'm suggesting you lie? You've got issues dude. In the event that someone is severely injured or killed, the cops themselves will obtain the any available video/photos as part of their investigation. They're not going waste their time on minor incidents.

But I couldn't get out of my 180Km/hr speeding ticket because they used a camera on me…

You were talking about traffic MONITORING cameras before and now you're talking about SPEED cameras here. They're two totally different things!

By the way, just in case you didn't know - cops don't even need any photographic or video evidence to charge you with speeding. Their word alone is often enough nail ya in court!

                  • @bobbified:

Yeah lie on the small things since no one is gonna bother. The big things you tell truth. This is what I read.

You were talking about traffic MONITORING cameras before and now you're talking about SPEED cameras here. They're two totally different things!

Both cameras, just that the cops can use either and you can't; well at least without jumping through hoops to get them and that's IF they even exist still….if they find it and then delete it and then say "Well, I don't know what footage you're talking about….I dont have said footage speak of…."

By the way, just in case you didn't know - cops don't even need any photographic or video evidence to charge you with speeding. Their word alone is often enough nail ya in court!

                    Now that's just powerhousing….

    • +1

Not necessarily. Someone could be in the lane next to you and attempt an unsafe lane change (no indicator or not waiting for a space large enough). You end up hitting them from behind. It's not your fault, but then it might end up as a he-said-she-said situation as they might lie about how large the gap was, if they used the indicator, etc.

      • Side to side collision might end up 50/50 if no one admit fault, I submitted my footage to my insurance straight after the accident, footage save time as paperwork might come up few years after the accident. I installed 2 dashcam system on my car(1ch & 2ch), 1ch was from the last car.
