11th gen is literally coming out in like 3 weeks, is this really the time to buy?

    • +4

11th gen is being roasted atm and free return anyway if you change your mind later on

      • Free return, then they block you when you do.

        Never again.

        • I have return over 50% of my orders from CA 😅

          • @ln28909: Your lucky. I returned 2 I reckon. Not my fault it didn't work.

    • 10th gen is looking to be a better buy and if gaming is your thing definitely go 10th

      • +1

if gaming is your thing go gen 9 - no real difference

        edit

not sure why the neg but there is NO FPS difference between 9 and 10th gen
        not hard to google it
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfihVDeomog

so 9th gen is cheaper still

        • oh i agree with you… haven't seen too many deals on those though.. if you are already on 9th gen then no point in upgrading for gaming for another gen or two … this is good if you were say on a 6th/7th gen and wanted to upgrade…

          • @scud70: 9th no diff from 7th gen…

to be honest, i have 10th gen 10900X, and can hardly tell the difference from 2nd gen 2600K

            • @Charity: Lol wow thats a big gap… Are you using the same gpu? I guess if your gpu bound it probably doesn't make much difference

              • @scud70: Yes, same GPU, 2080 Super. It is amazing how little progress Intel did in the last decade! lol NVidia however did a much better job!

                • +1

@Charity: It's funny nvidia had the same lack of competition yet they still moved the needle forward even if last 2gen weren't huge leaps… Intel just went into total money printing mode… It's caught up with them in a big way… Even I moved to amd after 20+ years of Intel CPUs… Even Apple embarrassed Intel….

      I bet the 11th generation i9 isn't going to be $526 when it's released in 3 weeks either…

      • +4

No, but it will likely put further downward pressure on 10th gen parts.

        • Very good point!
          We'll soon find out

        • +7

not when its slower and has less cores.

        • +2

i actually think it may go the other way for the 10th gen i9 …

      • poor Intel 11th gen - worse then 9th gen….yikes

    • +1

You should wait if PCIe gen 4 is a key factor to you. However, the motherboards probably won't be cheap. NVMe PCI gen 4 SSDs are expensive. The desktop CPU range for 11th gen is still on 14nm.

    • Remember when people said that about Nvidia 3000 series.

  • very nice deal and good value at this price

    • +1

This isn't the "price", this is ebay plus, so you're paying for the discount!

I don't understand the virus which is ebay plus infecting this oz bargain site, is this site run by ebay marketing?

    Yeah great deal.

i7-10700K is also $407.15 for those who are happy with 8 cores/16 threads:

i7-10700KF for $378.25 if no need iGPU

    • you should post that up as a deal.

a lot of people would purchase

    • Thanks Gamer Dad. Picked up a i7-10700K. Much appreciated!!

    • +1

      great price!

    • +1

Insane price I got mine for almost $100 more a couple months ago

    • Shoot bought a 5600x for $450, why did I pay $50 more for 2 less cores?!

    • look at how tables have changed, i7-10700KF is the best budget chip now :D

  • +4

I've been strongly suggesting considering Intel for a while now, but with Ryzen 5000 series coming down in price, Intel is a tough sell again. I don't really see any value in the 10900K at $560 when you can get a 5800X for $600. Sure, it's 2 less cores, but it's actually faster in basically all workloads.

Even the 10850K at $520 is a tough sell when the 5800X given Z490 boards regularly go for ~$50 more than X570 and ~$100 more than B550 boards, so a 5800X + B550 board (e.g. to the AORUS Elite for ~$200) is still a much better combo than a 10850K + Z490 board. You could go with a B460 (Intel) board, but again, the AMD option just seems better.

    When the 5800X was $699, Intel was a no-brainer, but at $600, it's a different conversation now.

Just as a point of comparison, the X570 Tomahawk (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-AMD-Gaming-Motherboard-MAG-X…) is $280 right now, one of the best X570 boards. Similar quality Z490 boards are around $320, so the difference in CPU prices is already practically neutralised.

Edit: Not to mention that there is more of an upgrade path with AMD. You can start with a 5800X today and later upgrade to a 5900X or 5950X if you need more cores, but Intel is pretty much a dead-end platform. You could upgrade to 11th gen, but I don't really consider that much of an upgrade to 10th gen.

    • If my main purpose is gaming, is the 5800x a better choice over the 10900k?

      • -2

Yes, the 5800x is much better for gaming.

    • +3

It's not as clearcut as that. I have both AMD and Intel systems. I get the appeal of AMD systems, but my AMD system wasn't trouble free. Not only I waited for multiple AGESA updates (as it took AMD quite a few attempts - one bug was resolved using a workaround with performance penalty - though that particular instruction is not very important in normal usage), there was also a growing pain to learn memory modules (which ones to get, especially if you want 4 DIMMs).

Also, technically 5800X doesn't have integrated graphics. Sure, most people getting an i9 would most likely buy a quality GPU, but you don't have to if you are not into gaming.

I don't know about the state of USB port issue with AMD systems (it looks like an AGESA BIOS code issue - which should be fixable). It doesn't look like my AMD system is affected but my system is not a Zen 3. Upgrade path - honestly, this might be the last gen where AMD uses this socket type (or potentially the move to DDR5 is coming).

What I am not impressed is AMD blocking B450, X470 from getting PCIe Gen 4 support. The motherboard makers did that and AMD quickly disabled it with an AGESA update. Most people will opt for the AGESA updates because of the performance improvement and bug fixes. Also, the reason why people are re-considering Intel is because AMD now want their profit margin. 5800X now without including a fan (where is 5700X AMD???).

Would prefer AMD to knock it out of the park, rather than letting Intel off the hook again…

    • It's not really as simple as you put it. You save ~$40 going the 10900k which still a great performer across the board, matching the 5800x in gaming generally and beats it in a lot of workloads (take Cinebench R20 or Blender for example, or look at Hardware Unboxed review of the 5800x to see it compared to 10900k.)

Also, I don't see them as being necessarily cheaper. The Tomahawk you mention is also the exact same price right now, $280 with a discount for a z490. There are cheap options and most will allow the 10900k to boost relatively easily.

    • "but at $600, it's a different conversation now."

5800X is not "$600"… it's more than $700 most places including Computer Alliance.

And the 10900k clearly outperforms the 5800x in plenty of workloads, including productivity, 3d rendering and lots of games. Those benchmarks and tests are all over youtube… but for some reason you're claiming the 5800x is "faster in basically all workloads", which is false.

  • +2

    I hadn't thought I would call Intel a value option …..

But compared with stock and over prcr issue everywhere, Intel all of sudden looking attractive and reliable…..

    • +3

At the lower end, Intel is still good, e.g. the 10400F and 10100F are still really good options that I recommend all the time.
