    • Also 5G on sale - post adjusted

    • Who needs 5G on a phone though. Imagine the bill shock if it went wrong.

      • +2

We want 5G version just because of the snapdragon.

        • +1

I have the non 5g version and exynos is fine…

Get a cover in another colour and you'll be sweet.

  • Gee, the reviews on the JB Hifi website are not great..

    • +11

Some of the reviews I read across the models are pretty stupid as per usual.

I believe the screen issues have improved with recent updates too.

1 star for not mentioning screen protector, wtf
1 star for complaining about specs
1 star for complaining about specs again
1 star for cracking his screen

      Hopeless.

Product reviews on purchasing websites are usually filled with complete numptys.

      • +3

To be honest those are probably offset by "I haven't received the item yet but here is my 5-stars" type of reviews.

I think product reviews should be reviewed by administrators and such obviously incorrect reviews should be flagged so that they don't affect the overall score.

      • +1

"I believe the screen issues have improved with recent updates too."

NOPE not improved at all - Samsung want to forget about this phone and move on with the S21 lineup.. issues are still there.. Ghost taps all over the place.. forget about playing two handed games on this phone or texting fast….. 1 finger swipes are OK i guess but this is 2021.. .who only still uses 1 finger.

There's the whirlpool forums post about it here https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9vypmmp3?p=91#bottom

        • +3

my mate old 1 finger freddy uses 1 finger to type.

          • @Jazza2400: lol.. well sure.. retirees would be the exception here.. not sure that's what this phones targeted at though.

        • +1

100% agree, ghost touches are still an issue.

        • +1

Yeah I follow it, but not everyone had issues. And most that go online to whine about it wont be saying positive things.

Improved, I never said fixed. There's always exceptions, both ways.

I type one handed, I'm not A retiree. I also don't care for mobile games.

        • isn't that for the 5G model only?

  • How much difference between the CPU?

    • 5G version has a much better chip than 4G version

      • I know just want to know are there that much difference? Performance, battery life, camera etc?

        • 10-20%

The 4G exynos CPU is still 25% faster then the CPU from the 4G exynos CPU in Galaxy S10 series phones though.
I wouldn't worry too much about speed.

          • @vid_ghost: OK, so snapdragon on 5G have better battery life, right?

            • @superforever: if your phones always hunting around looking for a 5G signal then NO .. not battery battery life..
If your phones connected to 4G or wifi 100% of the time then it can up to 10-15% better battery life.

I'm going to stick with 4G for another 2-3 years

  • Is the camera much better than a S10+?

    • +1

it is better… but not worth upgrading for at all.

      • Thanks.

  • Great value.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G Or Google Pixel 4a 5G ? I have ordered Pixel 4a 5G through Telstra for $599, which is pending pick up from local post office.

    • +1

If you don't care about wireless charging and a few minor bells and whistles Pixel 4a is more value for money.

I bought the Pixel 5 through Telstra instead of S20/S21 because I like the stock Google/Android One experience.

  • FE5G is same cost as getting a S21 using Harvey Norman $65 plan and cancelling ($850 - whatever payment you have made).
Atleast according to myoptus app, which says I now owe 740ish after 1 1/2 months.

    • +2

I don't know much about S21 but some argue that FE5G is a better phone.

      • +2

FE5G would be a better phone if not for the ghost touches, which is driving me insane.
Tempted to take it back, but setting up everything again is such a PITA.

        • +1

Some people report that they have ghost touches with S21+ too. It's amazing that Samsung can't/won't fix those issues.

  • maybe check xiaomi 10s spec. better option.

  • +1

I have had the FE (5G) for about 3 months now and am quite happy with it.

    Pros:
Amazing screen that does not seem to have negative PWM effects for me. The only OLED screen I have been able to work with so far are this one and the LG v30.
120Hz refresh is super smooth, flat screen means no issues with edge touches and so on.
Works well with bluetooth headphones - I am using soundpeats true air 2 and the samsung buds+, the FE supports the Aptx codec.
Sound quality from the speakers is surprisingly good.
Camera is good, even the selfie seems ok (but I am coming from a low base with the v30), super slo-mo is fun.
Dex appears to be interesting and may prove useful for me down the track, but at the moment my chromebook fulfils that role.

    Cons:
The fingerprint scanner is IMO the worst feature by far, and was infuriating to use. There is a limit to enrol only 3 fingers which is frustrating as well. The v30 fingerprint scanner is so much easier, reliable and ergonomically perfect in comparison.
I still miss the headphone jack
The battery has failed to impress me. It is just average, but may be due to the higher brightness I work with (I tend to keep it above 30% at a minimum, as it appears to have DC dimming above 30% as reported by notebookcheck)
Still kind of heavy (compared with the v30+)
Plastic back is never as nice as glass IMO, I left the plastic protection on the back until my case arrived which took a few weeks - there is a square cutout on the protector that left a mark just from handling it over a few weeks, so the plastic still absorbs stuff.
The fingerprint scanner is so freaking bad, with the tempered glass it is absolute junk. I had to say it again.

My choice of case is the aramid fibre one from aliexpress for $25-30 - I chose this mostly for the extremely light weight (11.5g) and exotic (not just TPU) material.
I have just recently (a few days ago) ditched the factory applied plastic on the screen and gone to a tempered glass protector from Aliexpress. Whilst the screen feels better and looks cleaner, the fingerprint scanner became unusable, but by then I had switched to alternate login methods.

If the Pixel 5 had the screen from this I would have gone with that, but for now (mostly as I need a usable screen) I am sticking with the FE for the long haul.

    • +1

There is a setting in the phone that turns up the fingerprint sensitivity when you have a screen protector on. Go to settings/display/touch sensitivity.

      • +2

The issue isn't the sensitivity, it's the fact it gets it wrong.
LG finger print sensors work 99% of the time.
Samsung in-screen sensor works maybe 20% of the time.

But, my biggest gripe with the FE5G is the ghost touches.
        I'm coming from (always have 2 phones) LG v40 / G6, Xiaomi Mi5s / iPhone 6s, Nexus 5 / Samsung Note 4, Samsung S3 / Note 3…

Yes, the CPU/GPU is significantly faster, and that's why I'm still using it. Otherwise I'd go back to my LG duo.
        1. Ghost touches - never had this issue with any other phone.
        2. Fingerprint sensor - much worse than finger print sensors on ALL the phones listed above (where present)
        3. Reception - not the greatest for reception, have to occasionally restart phone when reception drops.
        4. Ads (was 2, but dropped down to 3 as it's not as frequent these days) - better than xiaomi, but that's it.
        5. Headphone jack - first phone to miss this.
        6. Aggressively kills apps - even when only 2 are open / 1 in background, the background one often dies.
        7. Bloatware - much more bloat than the LG phones, much less than Xiaomi.

        The positives are:
        1. SoC - fast…
        2. SD slot - most of my phones have an SD slot (mandatory). I used 1 generation without (mi5s/iphone 6s) and never again.
        … not much else.

        • +1

you can turn on and off aeroplane mode to get reception again.

          • @techie8055: Thanks for the tip. Still really annoying that it happens.
Last phone I had with a similar issue was the DesireHD.

    • Do you know that if you register one finger for about 50% of the touches and then complete the process with a different finger, then you can effectively have 6 fingers that would unlock your phone?

      • It is actually recommend to register the same finger twice, and it'll be lightning fast when unlocking.

  • this vs the iphone 12 mini. what are your opinions? note: storage on the phone is not an important factor for me, as I have photo/video cloud backup services.

    • My opinion is I prefer a phone with a bigger screen thus I would take the FE over the iPhone mini. But if you prefer a smaller phone, then obviously you’ll want the mini.

    • +1

      Star wars or star trek?

    • I guess the question was too generic… One of the most important aspects for me is the back camera quality. I saw some reviews online but was wondering if some people had their own experiences to share

  • Tempting. Was gonna get from edu store but had a $999 jb voucher to use.

Got a pixel 5 for my partner for 849 Tuesday but they wouldn't do it for the Fe 5g and now they do.

Don't need the extra brute force since don't game. Mainly need for camera, YouTube, Netflix. Overall camera, battery life and sound biggest factors.

Like the bigger screen and better sound but worried about Camera and overall QOL issues.

Countless reviews and still can't decide between the 2

    🤔

    • I have the S20 FE. No ghost touches yet, but adaptive brightness is absolutely haywire

  • Could prices go down than this during the Easter sale?

    • +1

If you wait until Easter, may as well get newer tech without the ghost touch issue.

  • The orange-coloured one must be selling poorly, I wonder why :'D xD

    • Don't know why it matters.

My phone been in a case since day 1.

  • What does FE signify?

Is S20 FE a good phone in general? Dad looking for an upgrade from LG G6.

The G6 was around $600 back in 2017, so the S20 FE appears to be similar in turn of price.

    • Fan edition, have the 5g version which I got in the 700 dollar deal. Excellent phone, it's pretty big though.

      • Yeah, he asked for big, easier to read with larger font sizes.

Other than 5G (which he doesn’t have), any other differences?

        • Faster than LG G6, I have LG G6 before too slow to use after updated to android 9.

Other than Samsung, how about Chinese brands?

  • Can office works price match this?

    • Ring them up then tell us thanks

  • Does it have adaptive brightness??

Thought someone said is screen is PWM?? instead of the other tech???

  • -1

Difference between the 4G and 5G models:

    • Chipset, CPU, GPU - presumably different hardware is required to support 5G.
    • FM Radio on 5G - not a big deal since most stations can be streamed (and if you listen to radio at all).

    https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10428&idPhone…

So, unless you are frequently in a 5G area, and on a 5G data plan, and actually require the speed of 5G, probably just go with the 4G to save $150.

    • It's 4G exynos vs 5G snapdragon. SD is more power efficient, so you will actually get better battery out of it. GPU is better for gaming too.

I believe those with 5G are also on newer software, Jan 2021 whereas 4G version is on Dec 2020.

  • Is the 5G dual sim?

    Thanks

    • +1

      Neither are dual sim.

  • Nup

  • It looks like the oneplus 9 won't be released in Aus so I might just settle for this. Seems like it's reasonably priced overall.

  • Can wait for a better deal, but dad needs a phone now, so might just settle for this.

Any chance to haggle for lower price for things that are already on sale?

  • 5g model, I am having Bluetooth connection problem with every thing except buds live after android 11 ui3 update. not sure if others are facing one. saying that never had any other issues including screen as mentioned by others. warranty support from Samsung Au when they cant fix it - pathetic.

    • Have had my 5G model for close to three months now and Bluetooth works fine (have both a Galaxy Active Watch 2 and either my Pioneer headset or Soundspeat earbuds and they work fine).

Try updating the firmware of the Buds Live (I think they released an update weeks ago) and see if that somehow fixes the other devices connectivity; otherwise, do a network reset (as that will reset all connections including BT) and pair your devices again.

Worse comes to worse, I think the Feb update may go out soon-ish as Vodafone are testing it according to their latest update this week. If you're game enough (and it wont break warranty as you arent unlocking the bootloader), try switching to one of the EU firmwares as Samsung appear to be releasing updates there much earlier than the Asian side.

  • Pulled the trigger, any case recommendations?

  • thanks OP. had to pull trigger on the 5g as my p20 pro suddenly died this morning (was my favourite phone ever), would have tried to find a p30 pro but had no time

  • +1

Ordered a Spigen Tough Armor from Amazon, already delivered, pretty efficient and impressive. From the front, the case covers all orange trims. Some orange trim is exposed from the back around the lens area, and when the kick stand is extended, overall pretty good.

Still waiting for the screen protector from eBay. Just found out that the phone already has a screen protector applied.

Paid $660 with TCN gift card from Coles, effectively $570. My dad's happy.

  • 5G showing as 999 for me?
