SEGA Genesis Mini $89 + Free Shipping Code @ Kogan

470
POSTIE

Pretty decent price. Code gives you free shipping.
Technically the Mega Drive version is the one that should be sold in Australia, but as far as I can tell the Genesis version has the exact same games, just a different design of the machine and controllers.
Generally seen as one of the best retro gaming devices in terms of game selection and quality.

How do you get the game cartridge

    • +3

Its an emulator with 40 games loaded on

      • +1

Or all the games if you mod it.

But at this point, surely everyone has a PS Classic, SNES Mini, NES Mini or a RaspberryPi that can run all the MegaDrive/Genesis games anyway.

        • -1

I love how you led with PS Classic…that thing is atrocious in comparison to this or the SNES mini, but agreed, at some point it becomes redundant, a collector’s item that remains unused. I picked up the Japanese Mega Drive mini with 6-button controllers, also the Mega Drive/Genesis mini is a lot more straightforward to switch languages on out-of-the-box I believe (when compared with SNES etc.)

          • +6

            @TwinVader:

I love how you led with PS Classic…that thing is atrocious in comparison to this or the SNES mini

Wrong. A stock PS Classic is garbage but that’s a software issue. The specs in the PS Classic are much better than the SNES Mini. Once modded with good emulators the PS Classic is much better than the SNES Mini. I have both and the SNES sits in the box.

            • +2

@PainToad: Hey do you happen to ever have issues with the controllers directional buttons? We play puzzle fighter 2 quite a bit, and when I hit down at the wrong angle the pieces end up going sideways. My gut feeling is I happens more on one controller than the other but can't be sure

            • @PainToad: ‘Surely everyone’ has a PC that can run everything better and with a much broader variety of settings and customization than any of these portable substitutes, so the stock value of the item matters greatly when considering the overall investment, unless the aforementioned are genuinely your 1st preference for modding/convenience, to which I say: do what suits you.
It’s a pretty subjective thing, Right or wrong isn’t a factor per se, I’m sure anyone might argue in favour of one option over the rest of a pretty average bunch for your suggested purpose of ‘all the games’.

        • +3

I've got MAME classics running on my phone on an emulator

        • +1

Well honestly, I never knew that one can do that. +1

        • -1

Or just use an Xbox one / Series S/X in developer mode with RetroArch.

        • Yep I have all of them in retroarch on my 2019 shield TV Pro

        • -1

yeah you buy the official consoles like this from sony nintendo because they roms are LICENSED not illegal crap on a raspberry Pi.

          • @kungfuman:

yeah you buy the official consoles like this from sony nintendo because they roms are LICENSED not illegal crap on a raspberry Pi.

You do understand that a licensed rom on these consoles and "illegal crap" roms are identical…right?

            • -2

@PainToad: don't matter if there the same rom files they are licensed because they are on licensed product made by sony and made by Nintendo. If you hack any of these devices and put on non licensed games that aren't on the list of roms approved for the system then you are also puting illegal crap on it.

If companies like Nintendo and Sony catch you with digital content you don't own or haven't purchased, and you can't show proof of purchase its about a 5000 to 10,000 AUD fine. so do at your own risk. There are a few youtubers that have been sued by Nintento and Sony for just showing people how to put illegal roms on there devices or hacking there devices. Its even worse you sell the devices with these roms on it. Also openingly saying your are doing it illegally on public forum will definatlly get you in trouble.

        • Modded my SNES mini, was the best thing I did. Would rather have that thing than the original now it's great. No need to wait for games to hit the online store on the switch, have every game I need

Megadrive was the name in PAL countries and Genesis in North America.

I wanted the pc engine/turbo grafx mini. It was supposed to get released in Australia then covid happened and I think they sold all the stock overseas.

    • +3

Did you end up getting one ? I ordered one through Amazon US and it was fine (even got the extra controller)

      • I stupidly waited for it to get released here because I thought it would be cheaper. When I realized it wasnt happening it was already gone from online stores or way over rrp.

        • The original machine never got an official release in Australia though. There must have been zero interest to thus release the mini version which is disappointing. Like bennobee, I got mine via Amazon with an extra controller by Hori. It's probably the best mini console of the lot IMO

          • @Cyphar: What was the RRP for them? Like $200 USD when i quickly checked…

    • Yeah thats one of the ones I'm missing too. I was missing this but bought one on marketplace the other day for 80bucks. Tested it then never used it again.

I do love these mini classic consoles. I've managed to get the following, are there any I'm missing other than the pce? Bummer I missed out on that, didn't even realised it came out already overseas.

      Nes
      Famicom
      Snes
      Megadrive
      Neogeo
      C64
      Psx

      • I hope they re-release the Colecovision

        • I've only been buying the official mini consoles from console manufacturers like sega, sony, nintendo etc. I've been staying away from At games products as I always find the emulation to be poor.

    • yeah just realized this is the american verison, its not the Australian version that was here a year ago at eb games.

MegaDrive mini though is really hard to find now in Australian retailers.

I suspect the genisis mini woudl could with a U.S. power ac plug because the U.S. version was the only one that did come with a wall charger.

  • I used to have a megadrive as a kid. I loved but but the hard plastic used on the d-pad with sharp edges hurt my thumb.

I'm considering one of these but at $40.

    • +2

Who hasn't developed thumb calluses from that generation's gaming? Hell, I got them from the NES.

      • I think the SNES d-pad was more rubbery?

    • From the test I had on the megadrive mini, the control were very similar to the original MD.

      • should be identical. But unfortunately they didn't go with the 6 button version.

        • The six button wasn't released with the original. It came in like the second version around 1993/1994.

          • @Munki: i'm aware of that.

I'm talking about the 3 button, which should be identical to the original controller.

What year the 6 button came out is not relevant. It's Sega's choice which one they wanted to include, and they chose the 3 button which is regrettable.

            • @lostn: And this release is of the original console, so makes sense for them to use the original 3 button controller, right?

              • @Munki:

And this release is of the original console, so makes sense for them to use the original 3 button controller, right?

It makes some sense, but it was an arbitrary decision to base it on the original console instead of the better one. Especially if they're going to include SF2 in the collection.

Sony did the same with the PS classic, giving the non-dual shock controller with no rumble or sticks. MGS1 is not the same without it. It's also not a coincidence that the PS classic sucks.

          • @Munki: Yeah thats the one I got at home still. It came with Mortal Kombat (hence the 6 button controller), Columns and another game, possibly Sonic 2.

  • +10

I would have loved this if it came with 2 x 6 button controllers instead of the 3 button controllers, as this includes Street Fighter 2 which wont play great on a 3 button controller.

    • Are there ant options for 6 button controllers?

  • Maybe look at an RG350 for about the same price it can emulate 1000's games on several consoles. best of all its portable.

    • Not really the same thing. A portable emulator is cool, but it is different to plug and play multiplayer on the tv.

      • The 350 has hdmi and Bluetooth, so yes, you can do that.

    • RG350

Waiting for my RG351P to be delivered.

      • I would've loved the 351 had it have hdmi. I'm very interested in rockchip sets.

  • I noticed with all the other 'mini' consoles, they eventually became really cheap, not with the mega drive mini tho. I only buy the mini consoles as a collector, and dont think their worth the initial $150 asking price. Also, like many others have said, if you really want to play old games, its piss easy to emulate on pc/3ds etc.

    • +2

There is some virtue somewhere in buying the games officially and having a license. I am sure it won't come up on judgement day but it's good to support niches like this. Not sure how niche it is but if it was a kick starter and the project was going to live an die by our purchases I think there's a lot of people who would be happy to buy. I expect the original game developers would be getting a cut also, and it's a good was to introduce old games to a new generation in a more authentic way

      • Not to be a jaded ass (but I'm going to)…

Kickstarters rarely ship on time, if at all. Sometimes they are incredible though.

  • no 6 button controller = no deal imho

  • +2

Where are kogan getting these from? Has there been a re-release or did they find some random stock? This is the first post for these I have seen in more than 6 months

    • +1

      The mysteries of Kogan

    • +1

They probably found some old stock out in the back of their Hong Kong warehouse via Kogan Hong Kong. And it was shipped direct from there to the Kogan Australia warehouse to be on sold direct to the Australian customers through the local Australian warehouse. That's my guess. Which is the reason why the page does not show the usual official Australian stock notice. It didn't come from an official Australian distribution chain. It came originated from a Hong Kong distribution chain. That's my guess.

      • +1

It isn't official Australian stock, the Australian version of this is called the Sega Megadrive Mini, the Genisis name was used in North America from memory.

        • So what I'm trying to work out is if it's definitely out of production? On the wiki it doesn't mention it, unlike with the nintendo devices that were always limited run.

To elaborate, in Lifespan the wiki says 2019-current

        • i'd rather take the Genesis version to be guaranteed the US roms, and 60hz as opposed to the slower 50hz PAL.

  • Is the super console X or pro version better buy than this deal ?

    • If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

But yes, the console X is a "better buy," since it's just an android box running emulation, letting you play whatever console you can play on that hardware. The hardware is better too, for that matter.

However, it's not an official console by sega. So yeah, it's piracy.

  • Has there been any decent deals on the mega drive/genesis mini tower(32x with cart)? I've been seeing them on amazon/ebay for $150/200+ which I refuse to pay.

  • +4

Will probably come shipped in an un-padded satchel and box will really be squashed

    • +3

Yeah every thing Kogan had been sending to me was shipped that way. They tend to shove the product packaging into a plastic shipping satchel and ship it that way. There's no protection for the product packaging at all. No shipping box what so ever. It would be easy for the product packaging to become damaged during transport or even the item itself. Kogan needs to improve their shipping protection method.

      • +1

Vote with your wallet, simply dont purchase from them again.

  • Please do not buy this version buy the Japanese Version off Amazon its worth it for the 2X6 Button controllers alone

  • so is the 24 the last day when this finishs? or is today the last day?

    • +1

I think the $89 deal goes on for longer but the free shipping code ends today. Sorry if I've not done this right - it's my first OzBargain post!

  • Got mine today, haven't used it yet but the box isn't in the best nick, it's not totally trashed, it just looks a bit rought around the edges and has a couple of larger depressions. Aside from that the stuff inside looks new, I wasn't sure if the controllers were going to be full size as I remembered them being quite big, but they are as far as I can tell
