If Black Manta was a router.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure Aquaman could snap this in half with his bare hands, if asked. It's even got a nice fulcrum in the middle.

Black Mamba on the other hand, is a router. (Albeit by Huawei)

  • +7

Just purchased a motherboard with WiFi 6e, now waiting for the 6e routers to be available (and the 6Ghz spectrum to be approved in Australia of course), 2022 yet?

    • +8

Going to be waiting a long time on the spectrum side of things unfortunately, ACMA is only just starting to potentially think about maybe beginning to whiteboard plans to consider 6 GHz (you get the drift!)

today's tweet regarding the 5-year spectrum plan seems to confirm this. Discussion paper is slated for Q2 of this year and considerations based on feedback expected Q3 (take with a pinch of salt!). On the positive side I believe when they do get round to it they'll look at the full 1200 MHz that the FCC opened up rather than the limited range the EU went with.

I'm not expecting anything in place legally until 2023 at earliest but at least there will be mature products in the market to hit the ground running with!

  • Any issues with frequency being a UK import?

    • Possibly? While European versions won't have the mid-5ghz DFS frequencies disabled (Please don't use these or I'll tell ACMA on you /s), the block above channel 149 may have it's transmit power limited to 25mw.

If that's measured in EIRP, that's a pretty low transmit power.

      • may have it's transmit power limited to 25mw.

Which isn't great for Australia's larger than normal houses. I'm waiting on a deal for the 88U as it's the highest power of the family and I need it to get though a floor and a wall, although I can't find power specs on them, it just says it has the highest coverage. Do you know the power difference between ASUS models?

        • I'm just casually reading the table of WLAN channels…

If there's a region setting available in the settings you should be able to get it to work just fine here with the correct regulatory settings.

It should be under Wireless -> Professional in the Asus UI.

So it's not a big issue, so long as you change the setting. (I'm assuming it's there. No, Merlin does not run on this device.)

    • I don't buy UK imports any more if there is any chance of needing a return. Took bloody ages and their postage only mostly covered the return fee (I don't blame them for that but it still sucks). I see now you asked about frequency from the router but oh well I stand by my whinge.

      • just provide all the shipping evidence, they usually refund when you ask after shipment instead of waiting for it to process the refund.

This doesn't come with AU adapter, so be prepared for one.

  • +10

Asus is always competing with itself to see which one of their router can look the most like an alien spaceship.

    • +1

Meanwhile the Ubiquiti Amplifi Alien Router doesn't even look like a spaceship.

      • It’s the monolith from A Space Odyssey.

    • meanwhile im just waiting for the next spiderman reboot and this to make an appearance as the green goblins hoverboard

  • +6

Price matched with Officeworks last time it was on sale from Amazon UK.

  • Excellent price and the blue is a light so that's cool.

    • Oh, it has more than just blue. And you can have it flash, or have the lights move across… Kids get a real kick out of it.

  • Does anyone know why ax88u is almost double the price of this router? What features does ax88u has that this is missing?

    • +4

No expert … but this is what I found on the ASUS page:

      2.4Ghz is 2x2 (574Mbps) vs 4x4 (1148Mbps)
4 LAN ports vs. 8 LAN ports
1.5Ghz tri core vs 1.8 Ghz quad core Processor
      512MB RAM vs 1GB RAM
      1x USB3 port vs 2x USB port
Game Boost Acceleration on the AX88U

      • +1

So in other words, the ax88u is way better. Get it if you can afford it and just want the best. If you can't justify the money, then just get this one and be at peace with the knowledge that it's not as good, but is still a decent router.

        • +1

Which of those actually really make it a better device? Unless you're really having a LOT of devices, say 20+ on the network, I really don't see much need for the more expensive option.

      • I can't find the spec now, but range increases with each model, so if you need to bounce off more walls, you might need the more expensive model

  • +3

I am still running the old workhorse AC68U but wouldn't mind replacing it with a new WIFI6 model (mainly for higher data transfer on my network).
Not sure but but looks like people have some issues with this one. Found this on whirlpool: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/348q80r3
Guess I wait for deal on the AX88U. Or just live with my AC68U for a little longer …

    • -1

I just retired my AC68U after nearly 4 years of uptime. Still works great and running on Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. I probably could have kept it running for another year.

Ended up replacing it with an AX88U for $392.80 from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/611244

      • Yep … same thinking … looking at the AX88U. But not sure if the jump in performance is big enough to justify the money. The AC68U still works fine and it is a bit of money to upgrade. (On the other side I have a 24TB NAS and transfer lots of video and image files via WIFI … so should be a good investment to get WIFI6 and decent transfer speeds.)

      • What do you use the local bandwidth for if you don't mind me asking?

        • +2

@gakko Transferring files between the NAS and my laptop. Video editing and photo processing. I usually work with the files locally on my laptop and then gets archived on the NAS. Sometimes I go back in the archives and find files. Could use a wired connection but I love working in different spots in the house so a cable is not fun. It's a unique use case - most people will just worry about Internet speeds.

  • +2

I have the good old AC88, still performs like a beast compared to the crap the providers have given.

    • Considering I have NBN 50/20 I have no reason at all to upgrade. Speed and range is still great and it still gets the latest Asus updates.

  • +4

99% of people are not going to notice any difference between running WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 in their homes… just make sure you're exclusively using 5 GHz and use a phone app to check channel usage around you so you set yourself up to avoid interference as much as possible from neighbours.

The next big change (for homes and maybe SME's) won't be until 6E comes around and you can combine 6 GHz spectrum with WiFi 6 (802.11ax) to get up those true Gigabit throughput to clients

    • +1

Thanks - I wish more people read your comment!

I bought this to hopefully improve my home internet. We seem to get buffering on tv and games freezing on the PS5, laptop wifi dropping out. Had a Netgear Nighthawk then went to the Huawei AX3. Our drop outs seem worse with the AX82. We use the Aussie Broadband NBN router and have the AX82 in Bridge mode which completely shuts off most of the settings (QOS, Game settings etc)

Its funny when these drops in speed or drop outs occur a speed test shows we are getting the speed we should. The Wifi range was no better then (probably not as good) as the AX3.

I am going to reinstate the AX3 and then use the AX82 as a gaming bridge and see what happens. Its probably no fault of the router, just frustrating the amount of money i have spent on routers over time thinking it will help our internet.

    • We seem to get buffering on tv and games freezing on the PS5, laptop wifi dropping out

I have lots of these types of issues too on Telstra Cable and my fix is to reboot the modem. I need to do it every few days, and slowly the lag and dropout creep back until another reboot.
I'd upgrade to NBN, but there's a global shortage on HFC modems so I'm screwed for another few months.

      • In the exact same boat!

    • What kind of nbn? HFC, FW, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP?

      • Mine is FTTN.

    • Mate, they keep on introducing new models to keep you poor.

  • Xiaomi AX6000 or this?

    • The ASUS device will have a better interface, upgrade path to mesh and more stable.

  • I have Google Wifi mesh to try to get faster speeds around areas of my house. Unfortunately i'm still getting relatively slow speeds from the bedrooms (eg. 220Mbps next to the primary wifi and 70Mbps at the nodes.
What router provides the strongest wifi signal?

    • +1

Upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system if you have Wi-Fi 6 laptops, phones and so on at the other end.

  • This is a great price and a solid router — should last a few years. The RT-AX82U was released about a year ago (I think April 2020) so that would be enough time for ASUS and Asuswrt-Merlin to release a stable firmware.

  • Would these work with nbn FTTN?

    • +1

      VDSL2 modem + ASUS RT-AX82U = compatible.

  • +3

Still waiting for these companies to grow up and make devices you'd actually want to have displayed around the house.

    • +2

You mean your house isn't styled exactly like the 1990's batmobile? How do you get respect from teenage boys?

    • Asus ZenWiFi, other branded mesh systems and Ubiquiti access points are discrete and don't have external antennas.

    • +2

I find most routers (especially the higher end or gaming routers) are a bit OTT in their looks which is fine as it's probably placed somewhere that isn't a focal point but mesh systems are generally a lot nicer looking which makes sense as they're scattered around the house.

  • The RT-AX92U is also only $319 if anyone wants to consider that

  • +5

I hope anyone paying that much for a router will know this already, but just to be 100% clear:

/// No router can fix shitty Australian internet.

    • No but it will fix shitty wifi router problems when you have 15+ devices connected. It will also fix a lot of range issues due to the higher power.

    • My router is far, far more expensive than this and my Net is pretty good (gigabit FTTP). I wouldn't get this router as it's only 2x2 and I'll only have one AX device.

  • Looks like the space ships out of Independence Day with antennas

  • I had very bad experience with Asus routers. I had 2 , WiFi drop randomly, had to factory reset to make it a work again. It happens one a few weeks.

Not sure I am bad luck or something…

  • why do we need this router if we only use less than 100 Mbps NBN?

  • Hmm I don’t know if is worthy to upgrade from my R7000 as it still is working flawlessly..

    • what firmware does the device have? mine reboots (7-8) multiple times a day, so frustrating. I'm using V1.0.9.42_10.2.44

      • Use XWRT. It has been flawless.

      • I am using the stock one.. honestly I'm really the opposite of a tech savvy in the modem/router area.. all I do when getting a router is tweaking a few settings like qos, port forwarding, wifi channels things like those haha sorry mate but I tell ya not even once I had to restart the router unless moving places..

    • +2

Can't comment on this one specifically, but recommend going with a local stocked item that you can easily return if you don't like it compared to a stable r7000.

I switched from a 5 and a bit year old r7000 to an Amazon AU stocked ax86u. Returned after two weeks due to bugs that support couldn't give a firm indication of a fix coming for.

The ax88u is more stable having being out for longer, but even then people complain that ASUS nerfed 2.4ghz in favour of 5ghz late last year in a firmware upgrade that you have no choice on applying if you want security patches.

      • Thanks mate for your insight, I really appreciate it.

As a noobie in this area I wouldn't know all of that without your comment, I guess I can keep my r7000 for still a few years then since even my internet is just 50/20.

Thanks once again mate, wish you a good one!

      • Has someone reversed the patch to check what they did to the 5ghz band?

  • Would work well with Opticomm?

  • I got a ASUS RT AC86U and 68U in Aimesh can I add this one as main router?

  • If I live in a small place and don't have Wifi6 devices, is there actually benefit to upgrading?

I'm on fiber and get 90mbps. I don't do Linux distros on my wireless devices.
