  • Is Afterpay that one that you pay in 4 installments?
Are you able to/is there any penalty for paying it all in one go?

    • Either paying in 4 installments or in one go, how does this mob make any money off of you?

      • There will always be those who will miss a repayment or two. These companies wouldn't exist if there was no market for it.

      • The same way that credit cards make money despite giving everyone 55 days interest free.

        • Of course, we all know this.

I guess the real question is how do these BNPL companies differ from a bank offering me a CC solution with similar terms?
Both of them (Afterpay or CC) will nosedive my credit rating when I request/setup an account.

          • @DoctorCalculon:

Because it sounds like more fun? Seriously I have no idea, but it's obviously targeted at people who lack the capacity to think of such things. I'm guessing that 'credit card' sounds all serious and old person-ish, where as BNPL sounds young and hip, so entices more of that market.

OP, how does this work if you are forced to use Afterpay for this deal?

    • I put $20 on afterpay. The rest gift cards.

      • Cool. Is there a minimum amount? ;-)
I am guessing I can just use $1 for AP in order for the PAPDY20 code to work.

        • No minimum. I paid the full amount via gift cards. Afterpay is the devil.

Just select afterpay as the payment type and add in the code and giftcard codes and bam, no payment required.

          • @V1p3r: Sweet! I hope they don't close this loophole.

            Afterpay is the devil.

What I want to know is how are they making any money if people pay off their debt before interest charges start to accrue.

            • @DoctorCalculon: Alot people don't have the money, so it's all about dept collection.

Afterpay also affects your credit rating, so don't go near it if you're planning on getting a loan.

              • @V1p3r:

Afterpay also affects your credit rating

It wouldn't be any worse than applying for another credit card, right?

            • @DoctorCalculon: They charge the merchant not the buyer. But the buyer will have to pay late fees if not on time.

              • @Smaster:

They charge the merchant not the buyer.

The 20% off discount is being footed by the merchant / seller?

But the buyer will have to pay late fees if not on time.

Same with not paying off your credit card bill on time.

            • @DoctorCalculon: They charge the seller a commission (similar as AMEX, Paypal, etc, etc). Peeps who then don't pay their accounts in time are the gravey for AP and their like.

    • I see 3% cash back ebay gift cards on Shopback. What gift cards are you refering to?

      Thank you

      • Buy the swap gift cards, you can use them to get Ebay vouchers.

    • the extra $40 is worth the ax88

      • +1

Really? I thought the ax86u was the newer one and the only big difference was the extra ports?

        • +3

          They are very similar.

@Twix: Thanks. I did a bit more research before buying and ended up getting the 88u. Mainly because I realised that I've already got 5 devices needing LAN ports. Plus horizontal design is less likely to take a dive if a kitten jumps onto the tv stand.

I've got the ax86u. Been rock solid. Had the ac86u before it and also rock solid. Both running stock firmware.

Hardware is 'almost' identical with ax88u but ax86u reviews a little better from my usual go to sites.

Much prefer the standing orientation of the ax86u, more convenient for me where I need to place it. Also smaller in size overall if i remember correctly.

  • Thanks OP! Was eyeing this for the past month, close enough to $384 for me to pull the trigger!

    • Same here, just got one

    • Same! I've wanted this for a while but paying $40 over what it was before was too much.

      • +2

Spoken like a true ozbargainer!! The days of me googling ax88u for deals are now over haha!

  • Thanks op. Bought. Now to see what 8 devices I can have plugged into this.
