  • Can you fit USB into title?
Makes it easy for others to understand what the bonus is.

I never know why people need more than Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

Also, Symantec Norton is the one that had all of its source code stolen in the last week, isn't it? That's surely going to be exploited to get into the PCs of those customers!

    My advice: stay away!

    • +2

This is for those who want to buy Norton 360. No need to debate all the alternatives.

      • -6

It's not a debate it is just plain "good advice".

    • I never know why people need more than Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

Because some people have an urge to buy. Companies like Norton capitalise on this and there's absolutely nothing wrong with this as long as they fulfil what they promise.

Most people are just plain PC-ignorant and need some software, even "bloatware", to protect themselves. For instance, MSE won't scan emails for phishing URLs, where as Norton will. A slow(ed) computer is better alternative than a compromised computer, any day.

As for bloatware - a lot of resources (memory and/or CPU cycles) may be required to perform a function. Pick-up any firewall, ASA or Fortigate or even pfSense and activate its UTM (essentially what Norton's doing) and see its CPU% shoot up - so, that's bloatware too?

      • MSE won't scan emails for phishing URLs, where as Norton will.

SmartScreen, part of Internet Explorer, has automatically scanned for phishing URLs for a long time.

    • And as I said, here it is, it begins:

anonymouSabu: With the core code being reused in Norton products expect 0day locals against Norton anti-virus and misc products. Patches will req rewrites

you know, a long time ago in a far far away place where uber expensive computers took up a whole desktop and they ran MS-DOS from a new startup company called Microsoft, Norton made a program that was pretty much essential to all pcs call Norton Commander, it was your disk and file manager and ASCII text editor rolled into one, and unless you were a total full on nerd with the horn rimmed glasses and pocket protectors you ran NC on all MS PCs, then Norton got into the security software which was total bloatware that tookup a gazillion megabytes of RAM and HDD space and slowed down everything and since then that reputation has dogged Norton Ad Nauseum! fast forward to today, now Norton has to bribe you with not just a cashback offer but free stuff like usb drives as well!

    • LOL…during those days, I was using xtreegold…it was the only thing that you'd open ("execute") at the command prompt to get the 16 colour interface running…those were the days…and xtreegold was so "advanced"…until GUIs took over…

  • Rubbish. Get the free Bidfefender deal posted earlier today. Uses much less resources.

      bidfefender, lol. fats dunny.

The latest Notron uses less system resources and faster than either Kaspersky or Bit defender. I have already tried. This is a good deal.

I agree with the comment about just using MSSE, especially once you read the likes of this: http://www.techspot.com/news/46990-indian-military-computers…

  • Norton does have a very good moneyback guarantee if you don't like the software - for mine I prefer Nod32 by Eset, but I have tried Norton for 30 days then sent it back for a full refund…

I must admit I still see Norton as bloatware, though I haven't used it for years. Every time I get a new PC, I immediately remove the pre-installed trial.

+1 for ESET from me. I used it for a couple of years using freely found versions off the Internet, then all my family started bugging me about virus software so bought a 7 PC 3 year license for ESET smart security for $378. Works out to $18/year per PC. Better than messing around with free options and special offers when I have to maintain a whole bunch of family laptops…

Drats! When did the rebate go up to $40? I just got the $30 rebate and the V8 car usb! (Spot the OzBargainer….I'm such a cheapskate!)

  • You can download & trial Norton 360 v5 for 60 days

people have different views on Norton. But that shouldn't be a reason for negging a deal.
This cash back offer forces you to activate the software even though you may not need it for next 3- 4 months. Those who have another 3-4 months of subscription lose out on this.$48 for 3 users a year is not a bad deal at all

    • No. Call their support and they add the left months to your new subscription.
I called their support last time, when I had Norton security and upgraded to Norton 360. I had 3 months left and they said though there is a price difference in 360 and total security, as a good will they merged the subscription. So finally I had 15 months of Norton 360.

I will refuse to install this bloatware into my pc even if it was free.

Sigh, get with the times Norton is no longer bloatware. Probably one of the highest rated AV's, check on AV-comparatives.org and wilderssecurity.com for reviews.

  • And, from the SMH just yesterday:

A lawsuit filed against Symantec claims that the software maker seeks to persuade consumers to buy its products by scaring them with misleading information about the health of their computers.

hahaha Norton Scareware/Ransomware. so THAT's how you get new customers in a recession.

  • Title is a mind bender of specs!

  • personally I have not had a problem with any of the newer Norton products, my previous experiences with Norton where horrible but they really lifted their game. Here is a good review of the current batch of security suites http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2369749,00.asp

My advise would be wait a month or so, once the next version releases and pick up this version even cheaper. Last year I got version 4 (free upgrade to current version) with logitech speakers and cash back, in the end it only cost me $28

    • Great. I am also waiting for a good price. I have Mcafe, which came installed with Dell and it makes computer quite slow. I love norton which is running perfectly on my old laptop.

      • I have Mcafe

I'd like a capuccinno thanks. Oh wait, you meant McAfee.

        • +1

          lol yea.

  • -1

Go into HN and they'll do it cheaper. Just let them know the price.

  • So if you pay tax rate 3x or even 40%:
    $88 - $35 - $40 = $13 for 3 pc.

I think this is not a bad deal.
I have been using N360 for previous 2 years and so far so good.
