Resilio Sync 50% off (One-Time Outright Payment): Home US$30 (~A$37.50), Family US$50 (~A$62.50) @ Resilio (File Sync & Backup)

70

With Plex soon to be removing the photo backup feature I was looking for a replacement and came across Resilio.

This isn't the cheapest price ever, but it's a lifetime subscription with a one-off payment - great if you expect to live for a while!

Their USD - AUD conversion is better than the bank (US$50 = AU$62.50).

Resilio Sync allows you to host your own "Dropbox-like" cloud without centralised servers in between. ADDED: It differs from Dropbox in the fact that it is using p2p technology so you don't have a central server, and instead any client can sync to other clients. It's secure, use relay servers to work even behind firewalls, and uses BitTorrent technology to move and replicate files through encrypted connections across different devices.
Useful to create live back-up, sending big files to friends/family, and much much more.

  • but it's a lifetime subscription

Maybe a good deal for teenagers then…

Used this for a long time, it’s a great service. Love encrypted nodes too, meaning you can give a key to a third party to act as a node holding all the content but is only holding an encrypted copy.

    Why not just use Syncthing?

    • I just set up Syncthing as well, works great with my Unraid boxes

    • I was looking for something with a companion iPhone app, and as far as I can tell, SyncThing doesn't have one.

      • not for iPhone but in my research it seemed to be a limitation of iOS as it doesn't let things run in the background etc

    • Doesn’t support encrypted nodes, doesn’t have iOS app..

  • Have a look at Syncthing. I've been using it for ages to synchronise between PCs and it's free.

  • Is this actively developed? Does developer listen to customers, there are feature requests which are 6 years old.
There is no proper support for sure, on IOS can not backup live photo, no background sync, etc

  • For those who are wondering about SyncThing, here's a thread on Reddit that discusses somne of the differences:

    • nice, just pointing out this one, but still better than no iOS app

Keep in mind Resilio won't automatically sync in the background due to iOS limitations. You have to open the app to sync."

Why not use nextcloud? Just trying to understand the reason to use this.

Not sure why you get negged, but Owncloud does the same thing.

Just got everyone benefit owncloud /nextcloud is Diy dropbox/one drive that can be hosted on your local network. Very handy when working with large video files. If you can run plex I don't see why you can't run owncloud / nextcloud.

      See : https://owncloud.com/news/android-2-6-0-release/

I also have nextcloud running on my unraid server, works great as well as no need to pay subscriptions

No need to pay for resilio either. The subscription just gets some premium features

Setting up a resilio node is much easier than a nextcloud server, particularly if you want to sync from outside your network. I set up a pair of raspberry pi's to cross-sync with each other and installed one at my house and one at my Mum's. I sync with my local pi and all my data is automatically backed up to my Mum's house and vice versa

    • Setting up Nextcloud is defnitely way more challenging but the thing that really fails it is the sync speed - my experience was that it was so bad that it just wasn't usable.

I've had my issues with resilio too, but I have to say, its way better and faster than Nextcloud

  • Good deal. Use this to sync all my devices to my unraid server and that unraid server to another unraid server. Just works.

  • Anyone noticed that they may have lost files when they restored a lost sync? I've noticed lots of my repos had not synched properly and when restored, all the files were gone(basically just left with empty directories). I'm not sure if it has happened to other types of files but I'm now greatly skeptical of its ability (maybe its a settings issue but it shouldn't be losing my files with default sync).

I also have issues with how it deals with (or rather how it doesn't) deal with file conflicts - I never know if a file with syncing error would ever sync.

And lastly, the unraid resilio docker tends to fill up the allocated docker size - again, not sure if its docker or resilio but in the back of my mind I always have doubts on whether it really is working.

Lastly, as for setup, its definitely easier than NextCloud. Setting up nextcloud is a pita because you have to have a fixed IP for your unraid, setup apache/nginx separately and link the domain and worst of all, the sync times are horrendous!

    • Are you syncing source code repos with Resilio? Why?

Are you saving data into the container? Why?

      • The same reason you'd use resilio instead of Dropbox, etc….

Since i'm using a premade unraid container, its not me but either its logging to voraciously or there is some other issue. The actual files are / should be stored on the share

        • My point - source should go into Gitlab or similar - there is no point to use filesystem sync services for source.

If container size blows this is something wrong with either container or configuration.

    • Few things….

You don't need to use unraid, you could use common Linux distros to host owncloud.

You don't need fixed IP, you can use free dynamic DNS ( ie DuckDNS) and port forward.

Bottleneck of the sync is concurrency. You need to use proper database instead of SQLite if you want to improve concurrency. SQLite can only handle 1 request at a time.

Yes it takes time to understandand learn the above setup but it's part of the fun.

If you want easy then use google/onedrive/dropbox.

      • We don't have infinite time, and i'm not a programmer. On the balance of things Resilio was meant to be good compromise other than the issues i have mentioned.

Also, i paid full price for Resilio family so a little disappointed with the syncing issues.

        Edit:
Leaving the statement above but correcting myself. Thinking back I did receive a discount (I wrote to them to ask)

  • I don't see the discounted price.. has this expired now? Or is there a discount code?

    • Yep expired now

    • Write to them to ask for a discount code. It may not be 50% off but they'd likely still give you something.

I think i got 40% off just for signing up to their newsletter
