  • If its anything like their tvs, you will throw this out the window in anger from dodgy UI.

    • +2

I have TCL PLex it is quite smooth but lack of accessories and updates, running android 10 now.

      • +1

Same here, takes terrible photos too especially in low light.

    • +1

Except this is running full Android which you can make it look however you like

      • You cannot change the majority of the preinstalled UI.

        • +1

You can swap out the launcher all together by installing something like Nova. Disabling the factory apps (with Android 10 this is 100% doable) and you'd have a vanilla Android on any phone.

The only thing you can't change is the notification shade style and the 'settings' app.

          • @MadMaxBargainRoad: Other things like baked-in software overlays, menus, gestures etc, most of what contributes to what you interact with, can't be adjusted. Most people spend a very short amount of time on their home screen.

            • +1

@Techie4066: You'd be surprised how many things a launcher (say Nova) allows you to change. Eg. Animation, gestures for starters.

I have been using it since the galaxy s3 days and even on Pixel devices. It's very consistent.

Again, notification shade or finer UI elements like windows / buttons cannot be changed.

I love their tv they are great what model you have?

I have the 50 inch P615 Android tv and it's great.

      • I gotta chime in here, too. I have the same unit and it's fantastic. I had read that the UI was clunky and slow, but my experience has been the opposite. I would definitely buy TCL again.

    No NFC. No deal

    • +17

It has NFC. The name suits you.

    • +2

The replacement for B28 as a cut and paste comment on every budget phone.

I assume now you know it has NFC you will be a customer? As for NFC itself, it's hardly an essential. I use occasionally but given its just as easy to get a wallet out, and the coffee loyalty cards are in the wallet anyway, could very easily get by without it.

      • +7

Haven't used a wallet in years, easier to keep a phone safe than a phone and a wallet.

        • +3

My wallet has never run out of charge, and I don't carry any significant amount of cash anyway.

NFC is a nice to have, nothing more.

        • Wallet is fat, phone is thin. Which one is safer?

      • I just use my watch

      NFC confirmed.

You should always check the Manufacturers website.

JBHIFi might not always have correct info.

  • I believe it does have NFC.

  • That sort of money gets you an Oppo A52 (also SD665) with NFC and huge battery life…

    • +5

      But 4GB ram vs 6GB

      • And the Oppo a52 keeps muting telephone calls

        • What's the issue?

    • I thought the Oppo A52 is hard to get now? It’s listed at $147 at OW but no stock. So considerably cheaper if you can find stock

    • I got a Moto G8 with SD665 (but no NFC as not needed) for $150 unopened. Provided by someone who got it for free with a Vodafone plan. Doesn't have any issues like the screen going black which this TCL has, has Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD for high quality audio streaming, includes Moto Actions which are helpful for some people, and clean software that doesn't kill apps in the background like the Oppo. I should also remind you that specs don't equate to real life experience, every component is made differently across OEMs.

  • +3

This is an excellent budget phone. Easy full day Battery life, nice screen and the camera is pretty good as well. With NFC as well, you can't go wrong for the price.

The only downside is that the included screen protector is soft and scratches easily

    • +1

On a phone this price I would even bother with a screen protector. I have used a Xioami Mi 9T for over a year without getting a scratch

      • +1

I have used s10 for 2 years with no case and screen protector, apart from the few scuffs on the frame from dropping the phone, there is no visible scratches. Phones have pretty tough screens and pretty hard to scratch if you take care of them.

  • Would love the tcl plex deal to come back, can't beat that even after more than a year ago

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/518313

    • This is not a better phone?

  • These come with built-in malware.. so just a heads-up

    • +5

bold claim: did some digging and this was in reference to Alcatel (that owns tcl) in regards to a weather app from 2019 that has already been removed.

Alternatively if the phones are still being shipped with that infected app, I'm pretty sure Google Play security will remove it or alternatively you can remove it yourself.

Nothing in regards to this model has been reported with malware on it.

  • This or the motorola g10? Son smashed my phone again (with expensive case too) last night and over buying expensive phones. Its only for work calls.

    • This TCL is nicer overall but moto g10 is water repellent

      • TBH nothing impressive here. You can get better phones.

        • +2

Yep. Probably a Galaxy S21 plus. I think they're around the same price aren't they?

          • @Wardaddy: hahaha.

      • The TCL might not have an IP rating, but could still be pretty hardy. I was concerned when buying my Oppo device as it lacked an IP rating, but it has survived everything my clumsy hands have thrown at it, including full submersion.

    • I'd recommend getting an unopened G8 or G10 off Gumtree. My G8 has been flawless after a bad experience owning a shonky S20 FE 5G, it honestly feels just as snappy except for the 60Hz display.

  • Read a bit of reviews, but confused. Is this an upgrade compared to TCL Plex? Isn’t snapdragon 675 on Plex is slightly better than TCL 10L snapdragon 665?

  • Dang. I picked up the a42 5g even though it's a fantastic device I would have e preferably wanted a. Heaper handset if this did intact have nfc

  • +3
    • I just bought this today for the MIL. Looked at reviews for the 10 L and this one, and decided to go with the Vivo.

      • what is the deciding factor ?

        • +1

The reviews and the fact that I had a TCL and while it wasn't terrible, it had a few bugs and glitches that were a bit annoying.

        • +1

Deciding factor is that Vivo has an AMOLED screen (even though it's so slightly smaller). That's certainly unseen before at ~$200 local stock. With almost all other stuff being equal I'd go for Vivo X50.

          • @MadMaxBargainRoad: The Samsung a10 had this a year ago for 149, admittedly its no comparison to this phone, but hey it exists

… Or was it the a20? I can't remember, I got the price right though

    • -3

Pay a bit more and get a flagship processor :0

  • Is it unlocked? I can't find anywhere that mentions that on the site.

    • JB never sells locked phones. I may have heard it's now illegal, as well.

      • Oh interesting. Good to know. Thanks

  • Single or dual sim?

    • dual hybrid according to gsmarena
