How Much Do You Pay for nbn?

Got a month left on my current contract with Internode paying $80 a month for 50mbps - Unlimited (got a free month for the 6 month contract so it wasn't a bad deal at the time)

Service wise I would say Internode have been about a 8/10. Generally pretty good, were useless when I moved house but otherwise no complaints - customer service has always been local based from my experience (unlike Telstra which I was with last who were hopeless)

I'm doing a bit of research I feel like $80 a month is a bit standard there are a few 'sign up' deals where you pay less for 3-6 months then it hits the $70-$80 mark.

Anyone got any amazing deals they want to share or should I just accept that is where the NBN market it at right now?

Has to be unlimited and in the 50mbps range or better - I'm not complaining about $80 a month but just I know the savvy individuals of OzBargain can always do better then I can at finding deals!

Churn every 6-9 months to a new RSP. Businesses don't value loyalty any more.

EDIT: Use the referral link and surprise a fellow ozbargainer with a potential discount for 6 months.

      Agreed.

      • RSP?

        • +5

Retail Service Provider is a new name for ISPs. TPG, Telstra, Aussie Broadband etc. are all examples of RSPs.

          Retail Service Providers (RSPs)
The retail network service providers and application/content service providers are those that provide services to end users and have a direct customer relationship with the end users. Wholesale service providers do not have this relationship.

    • when churning how long is the outage?

      • +2

My Launtel to Superloop churn was within completed within the hour.

        • Are you happy with Superloop? Do you have FTTP? Cheers

          • +2

@vinni9284: Yes, Launtel and Superloop are great. Peak hour speeds are consistently high. Only made the move for the lower price. I'm on FTTC, so your experience might be different to mine.

            • +1

@soan papdi: Thank you. I am currently with ABB and completed their 6 month $10 discount so will churn to Superloop.
As many say, there is no loyalty any more from many utilities etc. Cheers

      • +4

Note that different ISP different churning time. Tangerine and SpinTel took a week for me ffs 🤦‍♀️ (HFC)

        • +3

I went from Telstra to ABB (HFC) was done in less then 15 minutes, with no outage what so ever, I only noticed it was so quick cause my download speed just sky rocketed, (Went from 50 to 250)

          • +1

@Topdog: Yes ABB and Superloop are good. Tangerine/SpinTel I think resell Vocus.

            • @brokenglish: I went from Superloop to Tangerine on HFC and I didn't notice any down time apart from the modem resetting

              • @reidy76: How long did it take? Did it happen on the day you had requested or did you have to wait a week like brokenglish?

When I churned from Belong to Superloop, the churn happened on the day I requested (before entering the new billing period). I didn't even notice.

            • @brokenglish: ABB resell vocus too?

              • +1

@lulzenberg: Nah Aussie BB don't resell Vocus. Aussie BB built their own network to all nbn POIs.

                • @Twix: Has this changed since 2018? I was looking into ABB reselling and it all ended up going back to Vocus I believe? Unless i'm remembering wrong D:

                  • +1

@lulzenberg: Aussie BB was using Optus backhaul in 2017. This map from 2020 is the latest I can find. They do use Vocus for some of the international links.

                    • +1

@Twix: yeah fair, cheers for the reply man.

now that I think about it, it may have been wideband that was doing vocus whitelabel reselling and they were absorbed by abb? not sure where i've got the abb is vocus info from but maybe i'll think of it sitting on the throne some day hah.

                      • @lulzenberg: I'm unsure if Wideband was doing Vocus whitelabel.

The company was formed in 2008 after the amalgamation of Wideband Networks Pty Ltd and Westvic Broadband Pty Ltd.

      • Took me 5mins to for my superloop to be activated and fully working. FTTP

      • Sorry when you churn do you need to let the previous provider know to turn your billing off, or is it like a mobile port?

        • +3

FTTP and Fixed Wireless = yes.
FTTC, FTTN, FTTB, HFC = not required.

          • @Twix: Im on HFC and churned away from ABB recently and needed to call them to cancel as they only accept phone calls if you want to cancel as per info in below link. Was quite an awkward conversation as the guy kept telling me the grass is not greener on turn other side.

            https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/help-centre/accounts-bill…

            • +1

@PleasureMe: I was told by ABB you can only cancel by phone. But I signed up with Superloop, and a day later received an email from ABB saying my account had been closed. I didn’t speak to anyone!

      • +1

People are answering how long the churn takes not how long the outage is.

It's incredible rare that your internet service will be down longer than a handful of minutes.

      • When I churned to Future Broadband you had to give them at least a business days notice as they resell business connections to home users but the actual switch over took as long as it to me to put the new details into the modem. They give you a free routed static IP address that needs to be entered.. given it may have been down a little while before I realized I would say, probably 10 or 15 mins.

    • +7

Its not the RSP's fault. They are just passing along discounts allowed by NBN. They cant give the discounts to existing customers. Its a bit of a problem really.

      • +16

Does it really matter whose fault it is? If my dollar can be stretched by churning, then I will do that. It's not just RSPs or NBN, it's banks, mobile providers, insurers, and so on.

      • +1

Well they can, they just don't!

        • How can they pass along non-existant discounts?

    • -1

Beware of this. I was with internode, left for another promotion with tangerine. Could not get connected and their technical support would only help for 10mins and ordered and said would require nbn tech.
Cancelled for superloop deal. Again, could not get connected over a period of 3 weeks. Support water times were beyond 2 hours on a good day and call back function would not result on call back if not called before 1pm. They had nbn tech come out. He checked nbn box and said no fault. Bought a new router that superloop suggested, still no connection. They reordered a nbn tech again so I cancelled order
I am no back at internode where they have aussie/south African call centres. No longer than 10 minutes wait time. Still not connected after 2 months, and free router from internode, but have kept my sanity.

TLDR….TELL INTERNODE YOURE LEAVING AND ASK FOR A BETTER DEAL, very least they'll offer a free month

      • +1

They offered me nothing at all when I called.

      • +1

        Cool story, bro!

    • Totally agree. Was with superloop for many years. They wouldn’t give me their 6 months discounted rates so I changed. They said when I go back to them after 6 months, I’ll be considered a new customer and get the discounted rate. I’ve decided just to change providers every 6 months. It’s not much hassle at all.

    • +2

      Thank you!
I looked for the best deal, called my RSP and they gave me same deal to retain. Was with same provider for 3 years and never bothered to check.
Got a month free and free speed upgrade.

      • which RSP was that if you don't mind me asking?

  • +1

    $45 for 25/5 with Tangerine 6 months (service 10/10)
    typical 50 Mbps price is $55-60 (ex:Belong)

    • +4

      I'm with Pineapple.net.

I wonder what the deal is with the fruit names!

      • +1

        Pineapple isn't NBN is it?

        • +1

Pineapple Net is an ISP that runs off DGtek FTTP.

        • +1

Nah, it's not. I just found it interesting that another ISP named themselves after a fruit!
(Pineapple are a reseller of the DGTek fibre network around Melbourne. It's bloody great if you can get it!)

    • What speeds do you get?

      • I’m on 25/5 with tangerine in Melbourne and I’m currently getting 22.1 down and 3.23 up

      • around 22.5/4.7 Mbps on FTTC, BYO router (Huawei B315)

    • -1

I am with Belong for years. About weeks ago the internet speed was way too slow and I contact them by email. It fixed straight away. Whenever the speed was slow I do internet speed test (it was less than 5Mbps) then it went up. It happens so many time. Now I think they open the tap when I complain and they close the tap after some time. The speed should be 40Mbps but hard to get it. Maybe other ISP will be the same so I stick to Belong.

  • $89 for 100/40 - Aussie Broadband.

    • +3

how are you getting that? I am paying $109 or are you in some first 6 month special?

      • +2

Been with them for a while (2+ years) and they offered 100/20 -> 100/40 bump for $10 cheaper randomly. I would enquire about it.

        • +4

I contacted them today to ask for a better deal and they declined. I have now signed up with Tangerine :)

        • +7

I’d been with ABB for 2 years. They lowered me to 100/20 from 100/40 and increased the price. Then launched a deal for 100/40 for cheaper than I originally paid.
When I enquired they said I hadn’t been on the contract long enough (because they forced me onto the more expensive, slower one!).
I said I’d leave if they didn’t do anything about it, and the guy on the phone laughed at me.
So I left. Never going back to them!

          • +1

@ldt: ABB did similar with me, was on 100/40 that they changed to 100/20 without me knowing (I did find an email they sent about it, but hadn't read it).

I work from home and it makes a big difference when uploading large files to work.

      • +1

        From this Aussie BB deal

        • yeah i saw that but it said you had to be on a slower plan for 3 months before they will bump you up and even then it didnt sound like it was always the case. So I didnt try it.

    • +1

Yeah curious about that too, was 100/40 then bumped down to 100/20 for the same $99 price or would have to cough up another $20 a month I think it was to go 100/40 with Aussie.

      • I was on 100/20 for $99 and they sent an e-mail saying could bump up to 100/40 for $10 less a month. So changed it in the my.aussiebroadband.com user portal.

      • +1

        From this Aussie BB deal

  • +4

$55/month 30/20mbps with belong and 12 month contract.

    • Yes I'm with them for a second year. No issues at all. Quite happy with speed/price. Though it is still not enough for 4K youtube streaming.

    • Be aware if you're used to throttling nothing on 50/20 in a multi-user household, this will feel painful as hell like you've dropped back to ADSL or something.

And it is CGNAT so if you need a real IP for any services, you'll need to buy a static IP, though luckily only $5/m when many charge $10/m

It was easier for me to upgrade to Belong's 50/20 and then pay a static IP than find a sweet spot for all the game launchers downloading updates on 3pcs by themselves at the same time and making our streaming chug/pixelated, so in the end I only saved $10/m from Internode with no CGNAT so didn't need static just to share minecraft to kid's cousins.

It can save you a crapload of money if you set everything up right and you don't have any conflicting needs, but be aware the WAF can go through the floor if you don't throttle all the things. If you live alone it is totally manageable, assuming you don't need their helpdesk for anything.

Personally, once the contract is up I plan to do ABB/Superloop/etc 6mth+ churn, no more cheap providers for me. Discount/referral codes on premium providers all the way now.

  • Optus 50/20 $63

    • +1

      How did you get this?

      • +1

Probably asked. I was on $75 NBN plan and cable before that. Asked for a discount for having been with them a few years and they dropped me to $65pm.

        • +3

          Optus 100/40 $75 plan
Been with them for 15 years so special discount over the phone

          • @deepdag: I got you beat by $5
            Optus 100/40 for $70
They messed me around a bit when I moved house. Was left without internet for 2 weeks as well as being a customer for 7 years so they offered the discount when I complained about it. I was only really looking for compensation for the 2 weeks worth that I didn't have internet but was pleasantly surprised at the permanent discount. Have been on that for nearly 2 years now.

        • Same with dodo.
          $65 - 50/20. priced matched.
Average speed used to be 45mpbs but now it's 52mpbs most of the times, which is good.

  • +1

Currently on the Telstra $40/month 25/5 500Gb "COVID" plan.
When that expires, I'll either switch to 5G (if it's available) or back to 4G or the Belong 30/20 plan depending on the deals going at the time.
Or hopefully, my area will be scheduled for the NBN fibre upgrade in which case, I'll buy a faster than my shitty FTTN line can cope with service (ie 50/20) with the best available quality ISP deal going at the time and finally get some decent NBN speed.

Edit: I just read up on the Telstra 5G Home Internet $85/month 1Tb data. I will be seeking to access this ASAP!

  • +5

    $59.99 - 50/20 Unlimited with Exetel

    • but that is only for 6 months intro offer right, or is it a fixed plan?

      • +1

No offer, it's ongoing rate. I was off contract then moved house and locked in for 12months. It stayed $59.99 after the first 12 months last time too.

        • Their new rates are $69 for 25MB plans. 50/20 are $79, so looks like you got a deal

      • That has been their price for the roughly 5 years I have been with them. Can recommend as support has generally been good and they have managed to get me connected the same day I moved twice now. It was really nice to be able to watch Netflix after a long day moving.

        • You would have to be on grand fathered plan with Exetel. That plan is no longer offered to new customers.

As already stated “Their new rates are $69 for 25MB plans. 50/20 are $79.”

However have special -Current offer Standard Plus nbn50/20 Unlimited Data $69/mth for first 6 months then $79/mth thereafter

          • @justgooddeals: Oh you're right. Yes, I was grandfathered in from an ADSL plan when my area got NBN and now I'm on TPG's FTTB which is cheaper (and more reliable) than NBN.

    • +1

I was on this deal for a couple of years but around this time last year it was increased to $65.99 - still a good deal in comparison to competition but not $59.99 and it appears others were able to keep that original deal. Mmmm am I being too passive….. mull mull mull…..

      • Same I’m $65 grandfathered

      • Mine is $61 a month now. Seems like they bumped people up diffrently.

    • Same here .. my 2 year plan ran out but with them since then…

  • +7

Im on Optus 5G for $70 a month. Get between 50mbits and 400mbits.

Downloading games from Steam is just a dream as it comes down so fast.

I have NBN FTTP at my house but dont use it as I want the NBN to make a loss due to how the current Government has set it up so badly.

    • Haha I don't even… What is your ping and upload on 5G?

      • +1

Ping is around 35. Upload varies between 10 to 30mbits.

        • Not bad for $70. Do you have NAT problems when gaming?

          • +2

@Twix: Have only played Borderlands 3 and no issues there.

It is annoying being behind a CGNAT as I have a Plex Server which contains my photos and videos of our son which we like to share with immediate family. Its a little hard for them to connect and access it and we dont want to have all this media in the cloud.

Optus technical support is next to non-existent and they dont tell you when they are doing maintenance on towers either. But the price point is alright for what you get.

            • +2

@nedski: Yeah Carrier Grade NAT would be a deal breaker for me.

    • +5

Just to let you know I feel the same way, so you are not alone.

I had been waiting for NBN a couple of years at my initial residence and it finally arrived half a year after I moved out. Waited 2 years at my new residence and it finally arrived mid-February 2021 but there was a shortage of NBN HFC NTDs so it is currently on pause until end of May or early June.

I am on $75 Optus 4G 500GB at the moment. After the Flybuys points and free modem discounts it works out to be $60/m. I am happy enough with the 25ms Ping and download speed between 25Mpbs - 150Mpbs. We love to get on a 5G plan but there is no 5G in my area. The only problem we have is the 500GB which is about 100GB less than what we need during the school holidays.

Screw NBN. It's one of the biggest failures in Australia history.

      • +2

You just look at how they did it over in NZ.

But they offer a sub-standard service, charge RSP's too much for it and this CVC charge is like gambling. Buy too much CVC and lose money, buy too little and your service sucks and people leave. Its nuts.

The NBN issue arose because of Liberals selling off Telstra in the first place. Privatising the infrastructure instead of the retail arm was just crazy.

    • I'm of the same mindset, but that's cause I have crap FTTN maxxing out at 25/5 barely and declining a few mbps each year.
If I had FTTP, I'd just be gloating :D

    • I hate what the libs did to the NBN too, but how would having NBN and not using it hurt them?

      • Because the NBN doesnt get revenue from my connection.

The majority of what you pay for an NBN service goes to NBN.

        • What? does NBN get revenue from you or not?

          • @Matt99: If I am paying for an NBN plan, then NBN makes money from me. If my NBN connection is turned off and im running 5G, NBN makes no money from me.

            • @nedski: My reading comprehension sucks, I took "I have NBN FTTP at my house" to mean you had an active Internet connection running through it.

I get your sentiment, but I'd sure use FTTP if it was available at my place.

              • @Matt99: If I didnt have 5G, I would as well. For the price point, 5G is far superior.

                • @nedski: I might end up getting NBN HFC 50/20 as it is due to restart on the 24th of May. That is IF there is no other fk up with a few months wait time due to the backlog.

I noticed a few RSPs had picked up their game on their NBN50 evening speed and pricings:
                  - Dodo, Tangerine, Spintel and Superloop now matching their evening speed at 50Mbps as avertised.
                  - Tangerine $55 first 6 months then $70. Spintel $60 first 6 months then $65. Superloop $60 first 6 months then $70.

I might start with Tangerine $55 first 6 months then churn to Spintel for $60 first 6 months and stay there for $65.
