  • Ah, I just bought a Series 5 yesterday from JB (it was reduced/on sale)

    • +1

May i ask you which colour & size pls and how much?

      • +1

I bought a 44mm cellular in alu gold with pink band for $546
It was advertised on the JB website until yesterday.
IIRC, the 44mm GPS in gold/pink was around $450 (also gone from the website), but wasn't available at my local, so I went with the cellular.
I'm using a cheap strap from fleabay (never bothered opening the pink band) and rocking a bumper case to protect the edges and so I dont have to wear sunnies from going blind looking at the gold case.

I'm sure you can check your local stores to see what S5 they have available.

  • My partner & I picked up second hand Series 3s for $150 each and can't imagine what of the extra functionality we'd actually find useful. Certainly still speedy enough, and on the current version of WatchOS. Funnily enough, the chap we bought one from had upgraded and said he didn't even know why he did.

Thoughts? Enough in these later models to justify the price jump?

    • +3

The always on display was worth the extra to me , I was getting sick of sometimes having to shake my arm to get the display to wake up with my previous Apple watch, when I wanted to look at the time.

    • +4

Screen is way larger on Series 4 and newer, additional watch faces as well. We should hopefully also get ECG support in Australia with release of iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4 this week.

      • Series 4 or 6 ?

        • +1

The ECG will be for Series 4, 5 and 6.

The ECG was recently approved (4 March 2021) by TGA. Finally!

      • -2

Been using ECG via beta - it works as advertised (eg. ‘This is not a therapeutic device’), but it’s more of a novelty than a real life changer, unless you have serious cardiac concerns (strong family history, elderly, defects, etc).
You need beta on both iPhone and Apple Watch -though, so it’s best to wait until next week to save the hassle.

    • I think Series 3 was the pick for longevity.
Until they actually activate ECG measuring in Australia, I can’t see there is any real need to upgrade. I prefer not to have always on display, my 42mm screen is plenty big enough for me to see, and generally the other features don’t give me anything I need in my life at this stage. https://www.apple.com/au/watch/compare/

Until they actually activate ECG measuring in Australia

        This week

    • +3

Series 4 has additional ECG, fall detection and noise detection for hearing health.

Series 5 has additional always on display

Series 6 has additional oxygen sensor and compass.

    • +1

Series 3 is really old now, it is slow, it has a smaller screen and has no always-on display with ECG.

Besides, most likely the next version of watchOS won’t support it at all.

There is really no point in buying it in 2021.

    • If you just got the Series 3 then I think you no need to upgrade. But I got mine for 2.5 or 3 years and upgraded to Series 6, and I am happy with the upgrade.

The display certainly look a lot nicer, and run faster. I won't say the oxygen function is very useful, but there was a time I was having a cold and I did use it to check. If my budget was tighter I probably would go for a SE, which still have majority of the function.

Another reason of upgrade is battery life. The Series 3 was still doing ok with daily charge. But battery performance will decrease eventually, so I traded in my Series 3 when it still worth some money.

    • My series 0 still fast enough to still tell the time more accurately than any other watch I've ever owned.

  • Oh, not a big deal, but with my S5 (and I presume earlier versions) they included the power wart as well as a cable.
The S6 does not come with (just like iphone 11 came with 18W charger, and iphone 12 came with nothing)

  • I’m considering upgrading from my S3, the watch doesn’t send call notifications anymore. Everything else still works, even the missed call notification.

Hate the silicone bands though. Do they sell the watch + sports loop?

    • +1

You can buy a knockoff loop cheap. I got the $6 aliexress milanese loop and I’ve been wearing it daily and sleeping with it on nightly across multiple apple watch upgrades, for years. Still looks new. Have to scrub the dead skin out every year or so though…

      • Yea I have one, still not as comfy as the original sports loop. I have like 20 straps at home that I’ve tried from different brands.

  • +1

ECG will b available in a couple of days, finally.

  • +1

Been telling myself to wait for Series 6 44mm to go on sale. Now it's the time but still not too sure if it's a worthwhile upgrade from Series 3. :D

    • +1

Well with the ECG being approved by TGA on 4 March 2021, the iOS 14.5 update (coming out this week?) will make series 4 and newer able to use ECG and irregular heart rate notifications.

This and always on display may be enough to upgrade? :)

  • Have a series 2, want a new one as it’s too slow.
Really wanted cellular but thinking at this price may not be worth it!

    • I started with the OG model and it felt slow af after a few years. I mean it still worked fine but even split second delays grind my gears. Upgrading to faster ones gives me my serenity back.

      • +1

This is what I’m after! The slight delays do my head in, but not sure if $600 is worth it still haha

        • +1

Hey Siri, set a timer for 1 minute.
          10 seconds later,
          59, 58, 57,…

  • Uh oh, with ECG coming this week for series 4, 5 and 6 … I probably shouldn’t apply anymore updates to my S3.
This will be when they push out the “slow down” update for older phones to get people to update. Of course, it will be done in the name of battery longevity.

  • I’ve currently got a Garmin Fenix 6 pro, and have been wondering if it’s worth getting an Apple Watch and signing up for their fitness thing, any one have much experience with it, and can say how useful they found it? Mostly looking to do some of the low aerobic exercises, as my Garmin keeps telling me I need to do more of that!

    • I don't have a Apple watch yet but very soon I get one but I would say you will not disappoint with the Apple watch at least. Especially if u owns an Iphone.

      Thanks

    • It tracks your exercise, it tracks you standing up (every hour it tells you to get up and walk so you aren’t lazy).

You can put the strava app on it to record your runs, or use its built in app will sync to strava.

It has these “rings” which are your minimum level of effort. A fun little target to close out each day.

  • If suppose you guys getting Series 5 44mm for $440 in Silver/Gold and Series 6 for $517 after discounts and rewards any colour, will you go for Series 5 or Series 6 ?

    Thanks

    • +1

6, “only” $77 for longer support and updates

  • This or a Garmin?

  • +1

Just bought a Apple Watch 6 44mm GPS from GG. They did price match with office work and now I am waiting for $80 back from Comm bank as a reward. Overall it costed me $517 which is definitely not a bad price.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/612614

    • Hey There,

Do you mind posting the receipt because my Local GG is refusing tonprice match.
      Tia

      • why are they refusing? OW website clearly has $597 for 44mm so they should do PM. I will try to post it other wise.

        • Their reason was its below stock price?? If you can post the receipt it would be good for us. I have the commbank reward and would like to take advantage of it 😂😂

  • I think combining JB’s 5% off eGift cards and Amex’s offer will make me pull the trigger.

    Thanks OP!

Oh, and I plan to start a new diet and healthy lifestyle with my new Apple Watch 🤣

  • This looks to be the new RRP if you look at apple website ?

    SELF-EDIT.. It's $50 off the RRP
