THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: The saga centres around an unassuming Hobbit named Frodo Baggins who inherits a Ring that would give a dark and powerful lord the power to enslave the world. With a loyal fellowship of elves, dwarves, men and a wizard, Frodo embarks on a heroic quest to destroy the One Ring and pave the way for the emergence of mankind. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS: The Fellowship has divided and now find themselves taking different paths to defeating Sauron and his allies. Their destinies now lie at two towers—Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the corrupted wizard Saruman waits, and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dur, deep within the dark lands of Mordor. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING: Frodo and Sam, led by Gollum, continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn struggles to fulfil his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron, so that the Ring-bearer Frodo may complete his quest.

Any LOTR buffs dare to comment on the quality of the cut?

I know the lighting etc was changed in some versions.

    None shall pass!

Or lets go on an adventure?

    • +7

Hands-down, the highest quality disks I ever owned. The only ones to do full credit to an OLED tv.

      • +43

Gandalf's appearance at Helm's Deep in 4K w/ Dolby Vision on an OLED was as close to a religious experience as I've ever had.

        • Can you please confirm how many disks this is and if ext and theat versions are all in 4K?

Literally cant find this info in any of the ads from major sellers or on Amazon and Amazon has a 9 disk version for $119, very confusing.

          Thanks in advance.

          • @Sprintz25: This is the 9 disk set. All disks are 4k, there is no normal blu-ray disks.

Each film has 3 disks. 1 Disk for Theatrical Cut, 2 for Extended.

            • @TheProbe: Awesome, have placed order, cant wait for it to arrive. Thanks

        • +3

Thanks to this comment I'm now one OLED tv away from the same experience. Have the extended edition on DVD but need that step up

        • +3

Got one due to this comment and I'm not even a LoTR fan.

        • Haha, so true. When I bought an OLED, the main thing I could think of is what these movies would look like once released on 4k. The aura of the White Wizard really comes through :)

    • +1

      4K 100% worth it.

    • +1

movie is inaccurate re number of orcs killed by Legolas vs Gimli.
Does not show all of the many Gimli kills

  • +3

I heard after the successful release of Snyder cut Justice League, Peter Jackson was going to release another extended version of the 3 films that goes for 4hrs each. Too bad that rumor was fake. Would have enjoyed it.

    • +2

      success? source please

      • +1

        Technically, it was successfully released

      • When I say successful, i meant that it actually got released. :)

        • threw money at it in an attempt to salvage the franchise and probably made it worse in the process…so thats sort of a success in some eyes….

  • Will there be any other versions or is this the final version?

    • There should be a 20th anniversary bundle coming out with the Hobbit included, but I'm not too sure whether there's a confirmed date.

      • +1

So I guess we're lucky to get all our options of free ring sizers today ; )

  • +2

Huge LOTR fan here but I had the extended version, adds so much fluff and movie ends up being more disjointed

    • Peter Jackson agrees with you.

    • +9

Extended Edition scenes weren't added in later, they were intended to be included in the theatrical release but had to be cut to fit everything into the mandated 2.5 hour rule set by New Line Cinema.

The end result being missing out on some critical scenes that were fully filmed and completed in post that change the entire narrative, such as Faramir's flashback to his relationship with Boromir, Saruman's defeat and death at the hands of Wormtongue, and Aragorn's gambit with Sauron to lure out his forces.

It's a marathon, but it was always meant to be.

      • +1

This actually is not correct. Just Google 'Peter Jackson Extended Editions' or similar and you will find he believes the theatrical editions are the superior version and the Extended are really just some fan service.
        To quote the director:
“The theatrical versions are the definitive versions. I regard the extended cuts as being a novelty for the fans that really want to see the extra material.”

        • +5

But then he moved on to destroy the hobbit, which should have been one four hour flick called “There and Back Again, a Hobbit’s Tale” subtitled “as it should have been with no frickin wood elves having shenanigans with dwarves”.

          • +3

@entropysbane: I would blame MGM more than Peter Jackson — Jackson essentially had to inherit the job from Del Toro who had a different vision for the entire thing, so naturally it didn't work out as great as it could have been.

        • +3

Nowhere in that statement does PJ refer to the theatrical cut as superior. Definitive does not mean better, it's simply the final cut as they intended it to be for release to the wider public. It is the version it was, and will always be judged on.

For the record I don't think all the extended editions are superior than the theatrical cuts, Fellowship of the Ring is perfect as is. Personally I think The Two Towers and RotK are much more enjoyable with the added context that the extended versions bring.

          • +2

@Jebus: I think he does infer the theatrical versions are superior: “Every time [I add something in] I think I’m spoiling the film, but I’m doing it because people want to see it and they’ll see it in their home.”

For the record, I agree with you. Two Towers and ROTK benefit more from the extra scenes, but I still feel they mess with the pacing a tad. I'm just pointing out that the popular opinion in the LOTR community that the extended editions are the definitive versions are not so in the directors eyes. Like what you like, makes no difference to me:)

            • +2

@solidsnek: I stand corrected! As punishment I'll buy this 4k edition even though I have nothing to play it on.

              • +1

@Jebus: I bought a LG 4K player specifically to get Dolby Vision for this boxset (PS5 doesn't support Dolby Vision apparently sigh)

  • +5

After seeing the extended, I enjoyed them more than the standard. Cheers bought

  • +1

    Bought, thanks.

    Now for the hobbit

  • Thanks OP must buy for me.

  • -1

Seems the hobbit 4k set is also having a sale at $71

    • +4

hmm if they discounted it by another $72 I might think about it :P

      • +1

        The hobbit is folly

  • thanks OP been waiting for this

  • You guys all managed to buy ps5? Or do you have dedicated 4k player?

    • +5

4K players have been around since Xbox One days…

    • +2

A dedicated Blu ray player is better anyway, ps5 can't do dolby vision

      • Do you mean for gaming or is this for movies as well? I'm assuming it has HDR10 then, are the two formats similar in quality?

        • +2

For both. HDR10 and Dolby vision are pretty similar but Dolby Vision is slightly better, most wouldn't even notice

    • I'm keen to give UHD a run with my PS5. It hasn't been doing too much else recently….

  • cheaper than jb but amazon seems to applying very selective deals to compete and not price matching across the board….

    loss leaders?

  • +1

Isn't the set of these on Netflix or Amazon prime video?

    • You'd need to pay for them on Prime Video at A$14.99 per title.

    • +4

Netflix video and audio quality is terrible in comparison to bluray.

    • Netflix only have theatrical version.

Last year when it was on Stan it was the full version, I don't know why Netflix only have the theatrical.

    • Username definitely doesn't check out

  • Is there a legal 4k version of this which one could download?

I don't have anything to play DVDs on anymore, let alone blu-ray, and LotR 4k extended is one of the few films I would actually like access to whenever I am in the mood to watch it (whereas most other films I'll watch in any quality when they show up on a streaming service).

    • Yes i believe you have can buy them through itunes

      • Can't download and store it though… 4K is streaming only right.. and only through the Apple TV app where it exists or 4K appleTV?

        • Oh you can’t actually download the 4K iTunes media only stream it? Well I don’t think there is legally a way to download the 4K versions of these films then. You would have to rip them from these Blu-ray’s to have them digitally stored

          • @TightTerry: maybe he could buy warner bros ?
            should be ok then

    • There was a box set deal for the 4K extended versions of LOTR on iTunes, $49.99 before Christmas.
The quality for a stream is pretty damn impressive, best I have ever seen. Dolby vision and atmos.

There is the risk though that whoever holds the rights pulls it off iTunes, and you lose it, which would not be the case with a BR disc set.

      • Forgot to mention that included the hobbit as well. And it was $45.
        So a fantastic deal.

    • Get an xbox one s and enjoy the disc.

    • There is a version that comes with a digital download code by the looks of it.

  • +2

Just putting it out there that it's worth to wait for the 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION that will be out in the next few months which will include lot of unseen bonus content.

    https://www.theonering.net/torwp/2020/10/07/108839-uhd-4k-lo…

    • +1

I remember years ago seeing Jackson saying that they may redo the effects a specific example he gave was Gollum in the LOTR movies as he evolved design wise as they released each film and this would be something they would likely do it or a 20th release.. have you heard if this sort of edit is being done?

      • Not sure about lotr, but i remember seeing something about hobbits cgi being improved.

I mean both trilogies will be in Dolby vision and atmos. It will be epic, it's been a long wait and I'm super excited!

    • Looks like that includes The Hobbit though? So the price will likely be quite a bit higher.

      • I believe they will be sold separately.

    • +1

YEAH BUT how much will this cost

  • These really are that good. Don't bother jumping down the rabbit hole of comparisons - just spend that time shopping for an OLED tv instead.
4k bluray player is the hassle here - ps5 works well but we're not all so lucky or loaded.

    • +1

4k bluray player is the hassle here - ps5 works well but we're not all so lucky or loaded.

      2nd hand XBox One S - sorted.

  • $23 a movie, is that cheap?

On a side note, I could have sworn I watched these at the cinema in 3d, but after looking everywhere for 3d bluray versions it seems none exist. I know I saw Hobbit in 3d and I can find that. Am I going crazy or was there a theatrical release of this in 3d (one would expect that if there was, it would have easily been made into a bluray for extra sales)

    • +1

      No.

      • is that an answer to both questions?

        • There is a 3d version of Hobbit. There has never been a 3d version of LoTR. (Thank God)

    • -6

3D was a fad that died a while ago

  • Heh. No LOTR was never in 3D.

I can’t judge the crazy bit. Are your palms going hairy?

  • +2

    AND MY AXE

  • +1

Got it for $69.30 from JB a while ago, great quality. Bought it together with The Hobbit trilogy.

  • Great quality release, loved the extended editions.

I myself will be waiting for the uber collections edition of LOTR and The Hobbit that should be out sometime this year.

  • +15

One ring sizer to rule them all.

  • Isn't a 20th anniversary super duper edition of it coming at the end of the year?

    • +1

"summer 2021" which is mid this year I would have thought (since no one ever thinks in southern hemisphere seasons when talking movie releases it seems).

      • Yep, mid year is my understanding too.
And I agree about the measuring dates by season - such a ridiculous Americanism.

  • The link has the 9 disk version at $119.

    • diff seems to just be that one has a Digital Code included (not sure what service that means).

      • I see. But the regular version also comes with 9 disks?

  • +1

I acquired the Remuxes of these while sailing the high seas. These releases along the recent release of GOT in 4K DV really are incredible

  • +7

Lord of the Ring sizer deal?

  • Thanks OP. Going to bite the bullet and get this then explain to wife why I got DVD set, two blur ray sets and now the 4k set hahaha 😝

  • Wait for BOGOF

  • +3

Wow luckily I just got my free ring sizer and now this!

    • -2

      "free ring sizer"?

      Is this a euphemism?

      • In the shire they call it a tapered reamer

    • Truly the Lord of the Ring (sizers).

      • What we need is.. One ring sizer to rule them all !

        • Why don't you try and russellm up?

  • Is this the 'new' version everyone was talking about a few months ago?

    • It’s new in the fact that it’s been released in 4K DV, the content is still the same though. There is apparently some enhanced versions coming later this year

      • Thanks, yes I was wondering if these were the 'enhanced versions' already

        • +1

These are the enhanced versions, different to the enhanced, enhanced versions coming soon and much later, the enhanced 8K versions.

  • What's the cheapest decent player to view these on?

    • +1

Depends on your tv. If you have an LG or Sony tv with Dolby Vision, you'd want a Dolby Vision compatible player. The Sony UBP-X700 is not bad. The Dolby Vision compatible players tend to cost more than the players which do HDR10+, which is what you'd need for a Samsung tv. Most players seem to only do one format or the other.

  • +7

Does it come with a free ring sizer?

    • +3

If you're after a free ring sizer, I think someone might have posted a deal earlier, not sure if you can still find it though.

  • Would the quality be as good if not better than shown at cinema?
