Wow.. we are getting somewhere now

  • Got an email that mine's been dispatched, though not showing up on Auspost tracking site yet.

  • One of mine has been dispatched, second not so.

Auspost still not showing but that's usual. I guess Catch have lodged the waybill but without the items being picked up until tonight or tomorrow.

  • Mine dispatched, too. "Please allow 3-9 business days for delivery." Does it really take that long?

  • Dispatched 30 mins ago and shows up as 'lodged' on auspost site.

    • same!!

      • same here, now we're getting somewhere.

  • Finally!!!

  • Got mine around half an hour ago - arrived in the office.

    • You gotta be one of the first ones, if not THE FIRST.
      Hope mine arrives sooner

      • but.. i want to be the first

  • i just got mine just then. it says on the sticker its a 3 cell li-ion battery where as on the specs page it says 6 cell li-ion …-.-

  • hmmm i just received mine too.. seems have been opened and repacked…
not to mention.. its states 'powered by next g network' all over the box… interesting!
    ??!!!??

    • I wonder if Acer reopened them to switch it with a 6 cell battery as per looseylu's post above, or maybe to unlock it from a network for 3G?

I haven't opened mine yet - will wait till I'm home tonight.

  • Got mine at 9am (CBD office) and have been playing with it for the last 1+ hours. In spite of COTD's claims, it came with Telstra NextG installed, so I expect should be 850MHz compatible.

As with others, mine only came with the 3-cell 2200mAh battery, which is not what was advertised. Let's see what COTD have to say about that…

Also some confusion about the RAM type - says DDR2 on the box, but DDR3 on the palmrest sticker. Ran CPU-Z and the "Memory" tab said DDR2, while the "SPD" tab said DDR3… Will wait until I get home to take it apart.

    • I'm keen to know too. Looking at Intel's website, it appears that the n550 cpu is ddr3 only, so if you got that cpu then it's all ddr3.

      http://ark.intel.com/products/50154

    • Folks, the chip is DDR3 (on mine anyway) despite the mix of DDR3 and DDR2 stickers, and what CPUZ has reported.

  • honestly i'd be over the moon if it is Next g Compatible - i just took my chances and ordered it hoping it would work :)

  • so these are the specs…

    WCDM A /HSPA
    2100/1900/900/850MHz
    (Band I / II /V/VI / VIII)

    GSM/ GPRS/EDGE
    1900/1800/900/850MHz

Meaning Next G is ok i guess (850)

  • Crap if it's DDR2 and crap if it's not 6-cell. I've already bought RAM to go in them… :( Mine are with the driver so should arrive today as well.

  • Might be worthwhile if someone who has opened their kit already, and confirmed 3-cell battery, to email Jen@catch and see if she can look into the matter of the battery (3 cell v 6 cell) and RAM (DDR2 v DDR3).

I'd do it myself but I won't be able to unbox my Acer until tonight to confirm what's in there.

    Cheers.

Edit: specs were very clearly listed on the main page of the item page (features), and again replicated in the specifications tab on the catch site. Take a screen grab.

      http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/Ultra-Portable_Acer_Aspire_O…

I'm really disappointed this is only a 3 cell battery and that is a problem that will have to be resolved… and quickly as there is only a short window for the cash back.

      • The shi7 is really going to hit the fan over this.

        Not happy Jen….

      • Does anyone have the original deal details saved anywhere? The link says "6 hour battery life" but can't see anything about 6 cell battery, although I do remember seeing 6 cell somewhere in the past. Have they fudged the specs description?

        • still on the COTD site:
          System Power:
          24.4 W 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery pack

        • At the bottom mate

"Weight 1.25kg with 6-cell battery pack"

I just put this unit on my postal scale and it weighs 1.053 kg with the 3 cell battery. :D

        • It is down the bottom:

          System Power:

          24.4 W 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery pack
          Battery life: 6 hours
          2-pin 40 W Acer MiniGo AC adapter.

Weight 1.25kg with 6-cell battery pack

          Edit: Beaten 3 times over!

        • It still says it on the site.

          "24.4 W 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery pack"

I have PDF'd the deal just incase something goes "missing" ;)

  • Anyone in Sydney got theirs yet? Mine was as despatched on 06/02/12 16:51. Still sitting at that status :(

  • scroll all the way down..

    System Power:

    24.4 W 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery pack
    Battery life: 6 hours
    2-pin 40 W Acer MiniGo AC adapter.

    • Oh yep that's where it was.

Disappointing, and COTD definitely have to do
      something about it.

But if worse comes to worse or there's some massive
delay - I had a check on ebay and amazon, and the replacement
9 cell batteries (giving a 9 hour battery life) are
approx $35-$40 which isn't too bad. Get one of these, sell
the 6 cell (when or if indeed it does get replaced!!) for
      20 bucks, then you've got a 9 cell battery for about $15-$20.
      Wishful thinking?

  • +1

i recieved mine this morning. from reading this i have to check the battery. if its 3 cell im very disappointed.

  • Just received mine just now… open it up and its only a 2200 mAh 3-cell Li-ion battery pack >:(

I am not bloody happy Jen!!

    • Have you had a chance to check what RAM is in there - DDR2 or DDR3?

Is the processor even what was advertised?!

      • sticker on netbook say it has DDR3, but I'll open it up and look for myself

      • Specs for the processor is right(same as the COTD web site)

        Processor: Intel® Atom™ processor N550 (1 MB L2 cache, 1.50 GHz, DDR3 667 MHz, 8.5 W)

EDIT: Forgot to say"ONLY A BLOODY DDR2 IN THE NETBOOK"

        • isn't that misleading, for someone who doesn't have a clue abt these stuff, i just thought i could believe whats on the sticker. This is awful, false advertising, we arent getting what we paid for. not happy

        • COTD says it has confirmed DDR3 - is there a sure way to check?

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1809733&p…

        • yeah read that before, I cant be stuffed taken off the keyboard and checking at this time.

          maybe later..

  • Invoices have now been updated online - quite amusing to note the following detail on there though:

    Order date: 8 Feb
    Dispatch date: 6 Feb

Hopefully Acer are okay that psychic-looking timeline!

  • i wonder whats gonna happen since it was advertise as being a 6cell battery.

  • Time for COTD to issue a CASH REFUND for all those that received an item other than the specs advertised - NOT A STORE CREDIT but a substantial refund to the credit card or PayPal account used on purchase. Better be quick too if they don't want to handle all the future problems from irate customers.

  • +2

This situation is no good for anyone concerned with this deal.

I don't expect it, but would be good for COTD to get on the front foot with this TODAY and issue an email to all who purchased. They should acknowledge that the specifications are not what were advertised and offer some detail about what the steps will be to address these shortcomings.

That said, I'm sure there will be some buyers who would never know this situation exists, except maybe find the machine slower than hoped, and with poor battery life!

    • OK not happy now if it's DDR2 and the Battery is lower capacity…

I've already bought DDR3 ram to go in it and was expecting what was advertised the whole way (as would everyone else).

They need to get on this quick smart

  • COTD are obviously aware of the problem. Even if they haven't read this thread (unlikely) I can see that the COTD rep's have logged on to Whirlpool in the last few hours and there has been mention of this thread and these issues there too.

Pretty poor we don't even get a "we're looking into this as a priority" or something from COTD. A little reassurance would be great instead of just leaving us all in the dark (like they did with the delivery issues).

  • Just send an email to Jen, and posted on their facebook page to let more people know. Now COTD better address these problems, or blood will be drawn.

  • I have just sent jen an email, hopefull she'll reply soon. Im unsure whether its a DDR3 or cos on the sticker on the netbook it says DDR3. Im not very good with comp so i dont know whether this is really the case but the battery im sure is a 3cell.

  • +1

So have u guys received the Netbook?

It says "Article ready for despatch" have not changed since 6/2/12

So now we are getting an inferior item??

3 cell instead of 6 cell , and DDR2 instead of DDR3? Am I reading this right??

if that is so FCUK U COTD, u better fix this !!!!

    • Received - YES
3 cell instead of 6 cell - True
      DDR2 instead of DDR3 - True

      • have you got the n550 cpu?

        • Yeah.

          CPU N550 @ 1.50GHz
          Cores: 2
          Threads: 4

        • how the heck did they get ddr2 ram in there? :s

        • Don't know, I havnt look at the motherboard yet.

Maybe the motherboard is a old type :/

  • I received the netbook with 3 cell battery as well. The one I received has a dead pixel.

  • I just filled out the form for Acer Cashback Redemption, I'll send it off tomorrow.

    • -1

You need to tear off the SKU thingy from the side of the box though. I'd recommend waiting a day or two until you hear back from COTD to see how they will proceed with resolving this.

      • +1

i already cut out the SNID and stabled to form

I can see what the outcome gotta be, COTD not going to give a crap..

  • How have they installed a DDR2 SODIMM into a DDR3 slot? I thought they were keyed differently to stop that seeing as they run at a different voltage?
I bought one of these but being in Perth I'll have to wait a week until I can check it no doubt.

  • the sticker on my acer reads:
    MEMORY - 1 GB DDR3 Memory

So is it DDR3 or DDR2 ram? How do I check it?

  • -8

We have been actively pursuing this issue with Acer Australia since becoming aware earlier today.

It is obviously a serious concern and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

If you are dissatisfied with your Acer netbook purchase, please submit a Return request via our website for free return shipping and a prompt refund.

Instructions to submit a Return request are located in the Catch Help Centre under "Returns/Warranty".

    • +2

      Well there's you'r answer peeps

      COTD doesn't give a crap

    • +1

Should we wait for one or two days, or start the request for refund now? The quickest, and the cheapest way is to give us a right battery. Otherwise, processing all these refunds, re-sell 2nd netbooks will be a wonderful experience to you?

      • I'd say wait a couple days - these types of problems, though annoying, can't be resolved as quickly as we like. What will happen is COTD will report it to Acer and some account manager there will have to move it on up the chain. There will be a meeting and some more discussion and finally a resolution. I'd give it until Friday before jumping the gun.

        • Yeah.. I am not going to send mine back to COTD anyways

      • +1

that is wat i was thinking, its much easier to replace the battery.. i wonder if cotd will give us a reply, im guessing after the hassle of this netbook cotd will lose alot of customers.

    • i wanna fart on it then return it

      • +1

i just want you to know, that by the time its received, any odour would have long disappated….unless you have a vendetta with australia post..

        • +1

Depending on what looseylu has been eating, such a package might also require a "Dangerous Goods" label to warn the posties.

  • +1

So what is the resolution for wasting our time and patience, return the product??

Why don't you get ACER australia to send the 6 cell Battery and if it is DDR2 , send a DDR3 Ram with a Voucher for a Computer tech to replace the memory approx $50-$70.

If after all this (time wasting) and frustration, we do not get our laptop as specified and what will happen to the $20 credit that you have credited to out account.

This is the responsibility of the "Distributor" (aka COTD) to find a resolution so customers are satisfied and provided with the product as advertised, this is up TO COTD to resolve with ACER, to fix the problem.

eg. Toyota replaced brake pads, faulty components at TOYOTA's expense. Hey if a class action develops from this and it is not far fetched even though the items is $349 (some ppl will stand for their Principles and uphold it to the end, and there are some Lawyers here and Friends of Lawyers), the consumer will win and may get a substantial amount because of the frustration, misleading, lack of care attitude from both COTD and ACER.

  • QQQ(seamus-catch) reply on whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1809733&p…

a1b2c3 writes…"So where did COTD get the spec of 6 cell battery? Is it Acer Australia's faulty?"

    seamus-catch reply

Our Design team relied on specifications provided by the supplier when creating the advertisement for the product. A revised specification was allegedly sent two days later. Our Design team did not receive the revised specification that reflected a change from a 6 cell to 3 cell battery. We are still investigating any DDR memory issue.

That said, if any customer is dissatisfied, please submit a Return request for free return and a full refund. Any store credit previously issued following the earlier dispatch delay with your Acer netbook order will be maintained.

  • Hmmm got mine, not sure what to do..
although i havent turned it on yet, doing the 2hr pre-charge..

def looks like 3g/next G enabled.. powered by Next G sticker, has the card, also says extended warranty additional 12months.

    Mines white.. is everyones white?

  • +4

WTF do u mean "Return request for free return" - do you have a reply paid "envelope" and what happens if it gets lost in the post? or Damaged? - This means no Refunds, no Laptop and more "HEADACHES". This is exactly the uncaring mentality of senior management, hopefully its not u "QQQ" as we have just wasted our time and patience with this "FARCE"

"Our Design team did not receive the revised specification that reflected a change from a 6 cell to 3 cell battery." Dock their pay, sack them, promote them, give them to the sharks, let them be guinea pigs for the next "SAW" movie…..Or is this just "Passing" the buck? Paper shuffling ka management speak, Simpsons "blame the canary"

Smells Fishy in the land of COTD, If COTD is honest and wants to do right for everyone , they should send emails to all of the purchasers (including the "informed", the "gullible", the "nerd", the "people that don't read Whirlpool/Ozbargain comments" , the "people who can't be bothered, wasting there time with returns"

    • +3

Well according to the post in Whirlpool:

"Our Design team relied on specifications provided by the supplier when creating the advertisement for the product. A revised specification was allegedly sent two days later."

So they knew about it before they shipped the product and while it was still on sale which makes this even worst. Give me a partial refund of $50 (not useless COTD store credit) and I'll buy the correct battery. Easy. Would be cheaper for everyone in the long run as their eParcel reply paid is going to cost about $8 per person plus the administration of refunds.

  • Yep, the Lawyers will have a field day $$$ basically this is how COTD operates. Never deal with them again!

  • +3

I don't want to return the product - I want them to come good on the specs promised at the price I paid!

Not my problem if Acer and COTD have stuffed up because someone forgot to send an email, or someone didn't read an email.

I've passed up other deals while waiting for this so someone better take ownership of this issue, rather than pass the buck, and put the customer first…

  • +3

    Indeed it is 3 Cell!
I have already cut the box for the cash back before I noticed, but going to send it back with that piece stuck on.

Never going to buy anything from catch of the day again.

  • +2

    Ok, return requested.

I've had 3 orders with cotd:
chocolates - closer best before date than advertised (not too bad though)
Mystery item - old oem antivirus software (not happy at all)
and this - combination of late arrival and smaller battery means it's not very useful to me.

3 strikes and I'm done with cotd. (although I'll probably get suckered into something else that will have problems)

  • Dealsdirect have the same laptop listed at a year ago, still listed. same price before cashback $349
    specs showing 6cell battery
    http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/p/acer-aspire-one-d255-netbook…

  • This is turning from bad to worse

  • +1

Hmm COTD/Acer are going to have hundreds of returned netbooks that have been opened up and used then posted back to them to be worth even less than when they tried to clear them all out via COTD.
You would think the most sensible thing to happen here would be they offer a refund or opt to send you the 6 cell battery with a return envelope to post back the 3 cell at no extra cost. It's got to be more cost effective than posting all these back and then having to dispose of the devices as "near new" at an even lower cost.
I'd be happy with the latter option as I'm happy with the price i paid for the advertised product.

The 6 cell battery does exist as confirmed by xfiledavid on the dealsdirect deal (Part # AK.006BT.074 , http://us-store.acer.com/product.aspx?prodid=29 ). It's available for $40 US RRP on their US store. I would think the best thing to do is they get a shipment of these over and send them to anyone who wants to keep their netbook.

  • mine turned up today. Sticker on laptop says ddr 3 ram. Has telstra nextg stickers and telstra mobile broadband program installed.

    Issues:
    - Came with a 3-cell battery. :(
-Stated bluetooth adaptor but i cant find or connect bluetooth to the laptop, anyone else having prooblems with bluetooth?
    - used my amaysim sim card, put it in the back but i have no idea how to use it to connect to the internet, anyone have ideas? is the laptop locked to telstra?

    • It appears that not all models come with Bluetooth, only European versions, from Acer support,

To check if Bluetooth is installed:
If the computer has Bluetooth™ installed, there will be a white label on the bottom of the computer with the word "Bluetooth" and the Bluetooth logo on it. If the label is not present on the computer, then the computer is not equipped with a Bluetooth module.

Note: Only select models ship equipped with a Bluetooth module. Models may ship with the Bluetooth software, but may not have a Bluetooth module installed for Bluetooth communication.

Another thing to check when it arrives.
