  • So which Model is this acer "exactly" is it the D255 or some other?

So with windows 7 starter - max RAM is 2GB, but If I use XP 64 Bit or 7 Premium can u install 8GB of RAM? or is it limited to the ATOM CPU??

    cheers,

    • The chipset/cpu setup limits you to maximum of 2gb regardless of which windows version.

  • Still available but almost gone.

    • +2

LOL, it's been saying 'almost gone' since the get-go! :)

  • +2

Note the N550 cpu is a dual core with hyper-threading (4 threads). Pretty sweet, if I must say.

  • Im wanting to buy one of these for my parents to access emails while they are away from home.

In specs, it says the following:

    I/O interfaces:

    1x Acer InviLink™ Nplify™ 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™

I cant find any other reference to WiFi - but am I right in assuming that this is a WIFI card, so the machine is both 3G and wifi?

Will it work on non-NG Telstra? We are out in the country and reception for non-Telstra networks is very patchy.

    thanks

    mel

    • +1

      Yes Both WiFi & 3G

  • So i was just on the verge of buying one but held back - I am about to go on a trip through europe and live o/s for a while, considering getting a tab of some variety and am going to buy a new dig camera to document my trip - no tabs have USB right? just thinking it might be worthwhile to have something to transfer photos onto? thoughts?

    • Acer Iconia has USB.

    • ASUS Transformer with dock has USB.

  • Nice deal - hope delivery is as good …..

  • Just pick one up now, thanks for the post. I have never been a fan of COTD and still curse them on the sabbath for that promotion they made me go through where I stayed all day to pick up a 3DS for $199 when it first came out, but I must say having that extra $50 off for Ozbargs was too sweet to resist. Looking forward to getting my new acer and I hope to see more extra bonuses for Ozbies

  • Hey REP one possible issue…..Just tried to register for the cash back on acer as the promo says you have to register within 14 days from the date of purchase……but the invoice you sent me says

    What happens next?
Our warehouse team will carefully pick and pack your product(s) and ship them to you via Australia Post. This normally happens within 7-10 working days, but sometimes there are delays - please bear with us.

so if the laptop does not arrive in 9 - 12 ordinary days, with the chance of delays, then it is cutting it quite close for me to register to get the cash back.

I cant register for the $99 cash back without the SSID, which is located on the side of the box. So can I get an urgent deliver or you can send me an invoice date from the date its delivered

I really hope I dont regret this impulse buy!

    • There's a post in this thread somewhere that says that they'll be dating the invoices sent with the netbooks accordingly, so all should be sweet. Cheers.

      • what do you mean by they will be dating the invoices sent with the netbooks "accordingly"?

  • it means the date on the invoice wont be the date you paid for the item, it will be closer to when the item arrives.

i wonder how many they sold.. quite a few i would think…. hope they didnt over sell, and i get an email weeks later saying no stock. like the last item i got from them

    • If they Don't provide complain to Consumer affairs, take them to channel 7 or 9,

      What item was that david?

  • has anyone who has bought their netbook on Monday received an email that their netbook has been dispatched? I ordered mine a week ago and it seems that it still hasn't been shipped…

    • Yes, but nothing came through as yet….

    • Mine is marked as "Payment Received" and that's all. It hasn't been dispatched yet. Ordered on 23/01/2012.

    • My account has an invoice button and when I printed it the date was 24/1/12. Hope they change them before the computer is dispatched.

    • welcome to catch of the day… one of the issues with them…

also you bought one but you didnt give the deal a +?

  • would this or an asus transformer be more enjoyable? I want something for uni just basic word processing.

    • +1

Do you want Windows or Android? Being a student, I'd imagine Windows is the go and if so, this is ideal.

      • you would have to buy office onenote & word to take full advantage of windows. Otherwise evernote, the next best student note taking tool is available on all platforms. For word processing, any of the various documents2go etc should be good enough for basic stuff.

best thing is web browsing is so much better on a large tablet than a laptop.

      • best thing is web browsing is so much better on a large tablet than a laptop.

Web browsing is indeed pretty sweet on a tablet, especially when you are lying on the bed or sitting on a couch. However I found tablet is still lacking behind desktop OS when it comes to "producing something", even on a lowly Atom-based netbook.

I have been using my Acer Iconia (Evernote + either onscreen keyboard or USB keyboard) to take notes these days. Prior to that I have been using the original 7" Eee PC running Debian 6, LXDE and LibreOffice. I often have to switch between windows — browser, PDF viewer and Office. With LXDE and Windows it's just simple Alt-Tab away, but task switching on Honeycomb is really slow.

        • tablets haven't taken off as a media creation device, they still are more based on a media consumption devices. Although they have started to design them for creation by adding keyboard docks some of which make the device very similar to a netbook but with a detachable keyboard.

But if someone is really having to ask if they need a tablet or a netbook then I think their priorities are geared more towards the idealism of the tablet

  • Still in stock… unbelievable! Reminds me of how long the Telstra Tab was in stock for which also blew me away.

I would so get this if it supported Next G. And a slightly higher display resolution for however more those features increase the cost.

    • yep the item has been "Almost gone" since the day it was released.

One of the tactics COTD uses to sell…

  • Wondering why my orders for these are still at the epayment stage, whereas shoes I ordered yesterday are already processing….

Care to give us an update qqq?

Time for the cashback is getting short indeed

    • qqq is getting awfully quiet as well……

could be the last time I deal with COTD if this falls through

  • WTF is going on here. Is COTD owned by Packer?

    Anyone received the Netbooks yet?

surely if COTD advertise in there offer eg Reduced price after cashback and not providing sufficient time for ppl to claim ie at least 3 business days before the 14 day Acer period ends it is a breach of the Consumer Protections act

Get ready to write you A$$es off to the Consumer ombudsmas

ANy lawyers here that can verify the correct steps to a complaint?

    • they have advertised it with the cashback as part of the price, that must mean something….

  • Wow people are quick to jump on the ACCC bandwagon!

I wouldn't worry too much about Acer, they are capable of leniency: I did a redemption with them last year…called them a couple months after submitting the claim and asked what was up - apparently I sent the wrong barcode in. They said I could email a photo in and when I finally got the photo from my brother it was about 6 months from when I put the claim in. A cheque arrived a couple weeks later.

  • When the hell wil COTD be posting this out???
My is still stuck in 'Order Status: Payment - eWay'
Does anyone have a different status?
My previous experiences with COTD have actually been OK, no issues at all.

  • Order Status: Payment - eWay

    as well

  • Order Status: Payment - eWay
Order Date: Thursday 26 January, 2012

  • +1

Is it possible to cancel the order??

  • Order number: 31xxxxx (Payment received)
Order Date: Tuesday 24 January, 2012
    btw, I paid by paypal.

  • hmmm by tracking the order on COTD it states:

We received payment for your order on the 26th of Jan 2012 and processing will begin shortly.
Processing can take up to 5 business days, and delivery can take up to 9 business days.
You will be notified of your courier and tracking number when your parcel is dispatched.
Please advise us if you have not received your parcel by the 12th of Feb 2012.

I want it sooner damn it! lol

  • +1

I think if COTD doesnt come though with the 199 laptops and people dont/or shouldnt get the ACER cashback… COTD deals should be banned for good… that would be pretty dodgy.

  • Since no-one answered i'll ask again - is it possible to cancel the order with COTD?

probably should have held off and just got a tablet the more i think about it!

Hi Jen. Glad to see some interest from the seller (especially after taking our money! :P)

To save your inbox, I think the biggest question that everyone has is:
"When will the netbooks be shipped?"

Or will we need to provide individual order numbers for you to answer that?

    • +2

How about shipping the damn netbook already, that would help wouldn't it?! It's been 9 days now and counting since u got my money.

    • Have the goods, all of them, been shipped? I didn't order but am curious. (rather than furious)

    • +3

I just sent Jen an email requesting a refund if netbooks aren't being dispatched today.

  • +3

Ship the bloody Netbooks or we will ship you out from posting in OzBargains forever ;)

    +45 Votes and Counting …..

How come Officeworks , BigW and even Dick Smith have products arrive within 5 days and Catch of the Day is advertising 5 days + 9 days = 14 Days….

I think they will chop some heads soon for inefficiency and incompetence….Take note COTD shareholders and Packer…

We are not happy with the dispatch and delivery system of COTD

    • +1

My experience with Dick Smith and BigW have been 2 business days at most for each order i've made with them.

Every freaking time with COTD its at least 1-2 weeks before i get the goods.

      Not happy Jen!

      • +2

Every freaking time with COTD its at least 1-2 weeks before i get the goods.

Consider yourself fortunate, last time I used them it was 1-2 months!!! :(

Honestly, at face value this looked like an awesome price; but knowing COTD's penchant for stock tomfoolery (i.e. selling items before they even order stock), I was steering well clear.

Unfortunately, history repeating itself like this really vindicates my decision never to use COTD again! ;)

  • +1

they're still available to buy. i might buy another one so i can wait some more

    • +1

i think i'll buy one now. these sent from $199 netbook is making me jealous.

  • +4

"Fortunate" No one has received it yet, could arrive next Xmas

How about we send a protest if not sent by COB this Friday we all request a refund and if they refuse just take them to them to the authorities.

    • How about we send a protest if not sent by COB this Friday we all request a refund and if they refuse just take them to them to the authorities.

That would be a very reasonable course of action IMHO.

  • +2

I will open a PayPal dispute tomorrow (Friday) morning.

Log into you account, open Resolution Center and click Dispute a Transaction.

I definitely did not pay for a notebook to just wait indefinitely for it. I even contacted COTD (qqq@…) no reply.

From my perspective, it's a scam.

PLEASE OPEN YOUR PAYPAL DISPUTE FRIDAY MORNING!

  • +1

sooo….. where the f is my netbook? Order Status is still "Payment Received". I ordered 10 days ago :S

  • Good Morning,

I have followed this up this morning for everyone and it seems there was a delay with the supplier sadly. We are expecting the delivery of these notebooks from them today and tomorrow so they will be dispatched asap after that. When they have been dispatched you will receive an email with a tracking number so you can follow the items right to your door :)

I'd love to tell you they were already dispatched but I'd rather be honest and give you all the honest truth.

For more information on dispatch times please see:

You know the sh!7 is going to hit the fan over this >:(

      Don't you

    • +1

I think everyone should relax assuming it is dispatched before the end of this month with the fact that they have said they will be amending the invoices.

I bought one. So in saying that I hope it gets shipped out tomorrow or early next week with our amended invoices attached.

    • +1

      ur killin me Jen!

  • +1

Well to be frank as long as I get the order I don't really care how long it takes (within reason). I know CotD takes ages to ship the half decent stuff, whereas other times it is quick as…

As long as we get them next week that should be fine.

  • +1

Maybe they haven't arrived yet because the deal is still open… and they therefore haven't finalised the unit numbers with the supplier?

That aside, if you need your netbook urgently, or even need anything urgently, you don't buy from COTD. It's just not that sort of business - they're very hit and miss on shipping times especially when they sell goods that they aren't actually in their possession / stock.

It's a good price, so I can handle the wait we've had so far, but would expect that anything beyond receiving the goods next week is starting to be unreasonable. And, COTD need to ensure they ship an invoice with the goods that is dated appropriately so that there are no hassles claiming the Acer $100 cashback (which is really supposed to be done within 14 days of purchase).

    • +3

Maybe they haven't arrived yet because the deal is still open… and they therefore haven't finalised the unit numbers with the supplier?

This isn't a group buy deal mate, that 'Almost Gone' button implies a known quantity of finite stock…COTD cannot have it both ways! [edit] Actually, knowing their mediocre business ethics they seem to think they can.

Why should a person who purchased in good faith on 24/01 expecting the goods to be shipped within COTD's own stated timeframe be made to wait on some speculative future purchases??? That's neither reasonable nor even mildly sensible.

      • +1

It's just a little suspect - I've never seen COTD have a deal open for so long. Usually 24 hours and "bang!", it's over. This link has been active for ages…

        • +3

Agreed, that's why I'm calling shenanigans on them! ;)

  • +1

NOT HAPPY JAN! Oooops… I MEAN JEN

  • -1

Hmmm maybe we will have them early next week I guess…

ON another note.. I actually have a macbook air 11'… i'm wondering what i need to do to make this notebook run just as fast.. i've seen in a post on this thread that you can upgrade the RAM to 2gb through the keyboard which doesnt seem too much of a pain.. but I'm also thinking a solid state HDD.. any recommendations on which one? Also how do you install things like your operating system on this drive without a CD drive?

    :)

    • +2

Can it use a usb dvd drive?

      • +1

only prob is you will definetly not get windows 7 started on a CD/DVD with a netbook… hmmm

        • +1

          Why not???

I've used a USB DVD to put a few OSs on various Asus EeePCs, I can't see why these models should be any different.

  • +2

There is a post from COTD on the Whirlpool forums explaining what has happened, part of text:

"An email update will be sent to all affected customers tomorrow (Friday, 3 February). It apologises for our delay, and confirms the scheduled dispatch date and validity of the Acer $99 cashback offer. As part of our ongoing commitment to improve, a goodwill store credit will also be issued to all affected customers."

    http://whrl.pl/Rc4KaC

Hopefully some good will come from this yet.

    • hmmmm maybe we will get $99 cash back along with a $99 goodwill store credit lol

    • Maybe COTD should put their money where their advertising is and introduce a penalty refund for late shipments. For every business day beyond their advised ship date, they provide a refund of 20%. Two days late = 40% refund, 4 days late = 80% refund. 5 days/one week late and you get it free.

      Great when there's a $99 cashback!

Not so good for their revenues I suppose, but would win back OzBargain - for once OzB's would WANT their order to be shipped late!

    • damn - i bought this with the pair of $5 earphones (plus ~$5 shipping) to get it over $300 and now I wont even be able to claim GST from TRS since i'll get it after my trip overseas

Serves me right for getting it from COTD… Too many bad experiences

    • Still nothing in my inbox… I used to buy from these guys quite a bit but their deals have been becoming less enticing and there are lots of good buys from other sources / sites and B&M stores now.

I barely even look at COTD these days - and it was only due to the post on this site (and the $50 coupon QQQ offered) that I opened my wallet. That positive feeling is no more…

This was my first purchase from COTD in close to 12 months. Maybe my last for 2012?!

Communication has been poor - and to say there will be an email sent today and still have nothing out there by 3pm AEST is a real shame.

You can't sell spin to a spin doctor!

  • More BULL $hit Excuses from COTD… You better amend those receipts/Tax Invoices to a date so we can have at least 7 days to claim or we will return them and expect a full refund…

But as 4 me I have lodge a Visa return for goods not received…. see how it goes

  • ive never had a problem with my purchases with COTD, their shipping time has been very good up until the purchase of this netbook. i am very disappointed and will definitely think twice before i purchase anything else on COTD.

  • What the #$%^ COTD is still selling this netbook, Almost Gone still :)). Trying to get more people in to their trap.

  • +2

    Guys/Gals,

We have to send a message to COTD using our actions, ie request a Refund and send a complaint to Jen to pass to management to pull their fingers out of their A$$e$. BTW it is not Jen's fault as she is just another COTD puppet, ppl will do anything for $$$…cause if you let them do this they think they can do this again and again.

So Vote with your "finger$" and get the hell out of this "deal"

    cheers,

    • im in on this. im fed up with all the excuses they give.

  • Just got email now:

    Thank you for your understanding,

    The CatchOfTheDay.com.au Team

    Kind regards,

    • I got the same, COTD handled this prety well to be honest.

    • +2

$20 refund (instead of store credit) would be better.

      • +1

Still waiting on the $58.95 refund as promised by QQQ

      • that is true.

  • Got the same shi7 email from cotd…

  • I got the same email too… at least its going to be send shortly… $20 extra is a bonus i guess! look the bright side guys :)

    • not really as the $20 doesnt include P&H and you'll have to spend more than $20 to get anything decent.

  • Still nothing in my inbox NOT HAPPY
    Order Status: Payment - eWay
Order Date: Thursday 26 January, 2012
    why………

  • +1

This is the first and last thing I purchased from COTD. Seriously, give us $20 refund, no one wants to go through this drama again on our next purchase

    • +2

Yep, I made the mistake of accepting a store credit with them once.

It then took forever for them to have something that I wanted, then as usual it took another eternity to arrive, when it did it was broken so I sent it back, after a lengthy turnaround the replacement arrived broken as well, sent that back…too late to give it as the intended gift despite being ordered 2 months before Xmas.

To cut a long story short, waited again & just used the credit for a "mystery box" that after about a month's delivery time turned out to be full of water damaged books & dollar store junk. That was the end of me & COTD!

  • +2

Jen or QQQ - is there any chance people that are unhappy with this purchase can cancel their orders and get a refund?

    • +2

You don't need to ask mate, just tell them to do it.

You have all the excuse you need, COTD simply haven't met their contractual obligations by exceeding their own stipulated timeframes for dispatch/delivery. If you don't want it, you don't have to accept it after this shamozzle!

  • +2

The deal is still on… cant imagine..piece of $h¡7

  • +1

that makes it 2 from 3 products i have ordered that turned out like this

Looks like i will be failing school now..

  • +2

    $199 notebook, is now the $179 notebook…

    • +2

Don't go counting chickens David, remember at this point it's still $179 vapourware! :p

  • Has anyone got the full spec list now that the deal has been taken down? I'm trying to figure out which ram/SSD I need to upgrade this little baby.

    DDR3 Sodimm at 2gb max? 1333 or…?

    Any Sata2/3 SSD?

  • OMG… the deal is finally over lol!!!… maybe they will now place the order with their wholesaler so they can start to ship em out!
