5 pages of mostly complaints and only 2 neg votes :p

    • Yep, I got tired of arguing the point trying to justify negs to mods for shady COTD deals when the products were cheap but clearly something was not right, only to be berated & have the neg revoked…caveat emptor now! ;)

I stopped dealing with COTD for the very same reasons that are outlined in pretty much every complaint here, they cannot continue to claim the refuge of inept nonfeasance indefinitely, surely others will begin to see their behaviour for what it is, willful misfeasance!

  • has anyone else had success with the $50 refund? I've asked them and they shot me down… not very happy…

    • no luck on my end. they told me to choose one of the 2 options

    • same… theres a James & a Derek replying, even though I told them my particlar netbook box had the seals broken on arrival and i had sent the SNID sticker off for cashback before noticing the specs were different… poor experience here… I asked for $50 back it would only seem far, but they insist that the '24 month warranty' card in the box is not correct and was incorrect collateral sent in the box and are now urging me to accept the $10 rebate… ummm no… NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

      • i havent accepted any options yet. i feel its very unfair. so unsure on what to do.

        • +2

what will they do if we don't accept those options?

        • what will they do if we don't accept those options?

they will keep your money and wait for you to start the next step (legal proceedings?)

With the RAM… the above post suggests buying one these - http://www.ramcity.com.au/system/64641.htm ($50.99 & $58.99. Whats wrong with these ones? http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=DDR3+2gb+SO… (starts from $11)???

    • G.Skill 2GB one is $14 @ MSY, see previous post.

  • people get much improvement with the extra RAM ?
    easy to change?

    • I've been using mine with 1GB of ram and have been pretty happy with it. Very snappy with web browsing/gmail which is all it is going to be used for. Excel/Word load up quickly also so yeah… I don't think I'm going to invest anymore into it as it doesn't seem necessary for me.

How about option 3: You send me the damn right battery LIKE I PAID FOR!

Not accepting anything other than an acer 6 cell battery. I suggest others to do the same. Ridiculous treatment from COTD.

  • This is how I replied to their "options".

    ===

    Hi,

I find both of these options unacceptable.

    Option 1:

It will cost me in the region of $25
    (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A15%257C66…)
and another 2 weeks of waiting to get the netbook close to (close to,
since this is not an Acer original battery) how you promised it would
    be.

In addition, you are being deceptive as the netbook already has 2
    years warranty.

A similar acceptable option would be a refund of at least $25, and if
you wish return of the 3 cell battery at your expense.

    Option 2:

I have already wasted a lot of time and at the end of it I want a
netbook, not to be back at square 0 after a whole lot of effort.

    Regards.

    • Please let us know what happens, i tried getting a refund but no luck.

      • you are entitled to a full refund through consumer law if the item is not as described. if you want a refund then don't settle for anything less than a full refund. lodge a complaint with your local fair trading orgranisation. if you paid by credit card you could also initiate a chargeback (but it takes a while).

The $11 2gb DDR3 1333Mhz ram I put in seems to have improved things quite a bit… now to get my SSD and let's see what this thing can do…!

      • Improved what? Faster boot and load times?

Have to wait for my wife to get home before I duck down to MSY. Youngest
        is sleeping…

        • Seems to boot faster and just all around be more responsiveness, games are slightly faster. )ie. Gish/Jamestown) though Jamestown is still too slow.

          Alt tabbing is better now.

It appears it has enough ram to open a few windows as before it seemed to struggle with one haha

        • Im so confused which ram and brand to use.. im still new with this, any suggestions?

      • Thanks mate.

      • hey thiefsie - which brand ram did you get for $11 and where? thanks

      • Where did you source the RAM at this price?

        • A City Software subsidiary had them (I can't remember the name or find the receipt)… I got 2 sticks for $11 each plus another $10 for postage ahaha. I just got the cheapest DDR3 2GB 1333Mhz I could find on Static Ice

        • It was Estore - and the brand is Strontium

Guys, just send an email to A Current Affair and Today Tonight like I did. Hopefully with enough emails they'll broadcast a story in regards to our situation.

Catchoftheday.com.au is sister site to group buy website Scoopon.com.au. I'm sure channel 7 (Spreets.com.au) and 9 (Cudo.com.au) would take interest in the story.

Also call Acer Tech Support and have them check your SNID. the Acer rep informed me that my netbook is infact registered on their system with a 24month warranty despite what COTD would have me believe. In the end Acer are the company that will handle our warranty claims so it really doesn't matter that COTD don't believe our netbooks come with 24month warranties.

    • I shall call acer to check how much warranty my system comes with. May i ask if uve accepted any of the two options they have offered yet?

    • Thats is what I did, I even used the Jew card, saying its related to antisemitism…..so hopefully they bite as COTD is going to suffer for this one if its the last thing I do!

      • you crack me up SuperJew. Love your posts.

    — Linux install —

    Hey guys,

I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 (the current one) and I'm much happier with it than with Windows 7 Starter.

The system is very fast, looks beautiful (especially the animations), and got plenty of software already installed (like Word and Excel replacement). No crapware at all, did not have to remove anything!

The only issue I had was with the built in microphone. To fix this, I had to install Pulseaudio Volume control, go to Input tab, Unlock (the little lock icon) and move the Front Left input volume to 0 (to preserve this, untick the automatic volume control is Skype).

I installed it side-by-side with Win 7, was super easy (before doing so, resized the Win 7 partition on Windows using the Disk Manager).

Don't want to advertise it, but if you like using different systems, it definitely worth the try! (read about installing Hackintosh but that is way too much hassle - lot of the hardware is incompatible).

I'm planning about setting this up an an automatic backup for my Mac system. For $200 it's a pretty cheap backup solution (and btw can take it with me anywhere and use as a full blown system).

The Ubuntu uses around 200mb after book unlike the Win 7 with is around 600mb :)

    Happy hacking :)

    • Just wondering if the touch pad and BT/wifi/3G also work?

      • +3

        Hi,

So, WLAN, BT, Touchpad, WebCam works out of box flawlessly.
The 3G modem is recognized so I guess that works too but was too lazy to put in a SIM card and try out :)

        INSTALL STEPS
1., Resize Windows partition (for me I had around 65Gb free space after resize) http://goo.gl/NcrII
2,. Download Ubuntu 32 bit install ISO. On the same page there is a HowTo for copying this ISO to an USB key (really easy)
3., Put the USB key in, turn on the machine, press F12 - select USB drive to boot from
4., When Linux booted, you can play with it without installing. If you kinda like it, start installing. It will ask whether you want to replace Windows (NO!) or install side-by-side (YES)
5., If you entered your wifi password, it will download all required additional software (recommended)
6., The install takes around 30 minutes. Reboot, log in, update the system's packages (an extra 15 minutes)
        7., Done, enjoy :)
8., OPTIONAL: download tools to customize your machine: Compiz settings, Skype, PulseAudio volume control, Laptop mode (to preserve energy on the go)

You don't really have to set up anything special or add custom software, there is everything you can think of :)

If you need additional software, always install through the Ubuntu source using the Ubuntu Software Center if possible rather than downloading from different websites.

        • Thank you.

Are you using WUBI (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer) for dual booting your netbook?

        • Great post. I tried it via USB stick tonight. Will install tomorrow night. Did you click the install icon within Ubuntu, and get offered the dual boot setup, or did you exit Ubuntu and install using wubi?

        • Upgraded to 2GB RAM (GSkill) on the weekend and popped Ubuntu 11.10 on there side-by-side with Windows (dual boot). It's a nifty OS! Refreshing to have something different. If you're keen to have a play I recommend it.

          Thanks ocoolio for the suggestion.

Only thing I probably shouldn't have done during the install was to tick the box to encrypt the home folder. I've had no issues with it but apparently it does make certain things harder to do and can make it a little less snappy.

I've done a search and there are some things you can do to remove it but I have to find which technique is the best/safest as there are a number of suggestions.

    • Thanks. Wow, so so tempting. Ubuntu 11.10 looks pretty sexy.
Can you please share the steps in doing it (at a high level)?

    • Many thanks to ocoolio and fookos.

Upgraded my RAM to 2G using G.Skill from MSY ($13). Note that the box says that its meant for MAC. According to the MSY guy, this is the only one that may work. And I can confirm that it does. I found this video in Youtube to be quite informative http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPDLlfZxlRA Remember to use the plastic card and run it along the edge of keyboard before lifting it up.

I followed ocoolio's instructions and installed a dual boot Ubuntu using 40GB of the hard disk. Again no dramas and everything seems to work well. I haven't tested the 3G side so I'm not sure. Ubuntu seems to come with everything so I haven't found any need to boot into Windows. I even managed to install a Canon MX880 printer driver for wireless printing.

      I'm enjoying my netbook …

Welll… I brought a 2Gb Kingston DDR3 Ram chip ($17) and a 60Gb Patriot SSD ($103) from MSY today (pretty much the price of the Acer cashback, so I'm trying this a freebie lol!)

Got home (all excited) and started to try clone my hard drive so I can back it.. well what a waste of a number of hours with clonezilla and some other programs, until I found this site http://www.cheap-computing.com/how-to-use-macrium-reflect.ht….

People.. a warning! the easiest way to do this cloning etc is to have 2 USB sticks (1 thats quite small approx 1Gb, and another thats going to hold the rest of the hard drive clone). The small one will be your boot up disk, the other will be your hard drive!

Once you have the clone all under crontrol then you proceed to this - http://www.cheap-computing.com/macrium-reflect-restore-image…

Once all thats done (thewww!!), then watch this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccmU4h5HkwE&feature=related and start pulling your netbook to pieces!

Mine is all done, recognises the 2Gb RAM and the SSD drive (but I might need a good clean up as its currently using 15Gb on god knows what).

Only bummer is my keyboard wont work, spent the last hour trying to detach the ribbon underneath and place it back, out, in but no good at all.. I even tried looking for a driver (but no such thing) waaa :( dunno what to do now!

However, highly recommended to upgrade the RAM and to a SSD big difference :) (coming from a macbook air user - reason why I ditched windows netbooks!)

    • Is that difficult to install a new ram?

      • hey mate… see video (link is above in my post!)

  • -2

So glad I just went too MSY and picked up an EEEPC for $300 with 11 hours of battery life.
Was so close to buying this but the deal closed. 3 hours vs 11 hours.

    • +2

      A$ 178 vs. A$300 ????? not comparable…
You can get a battery from ebay for less than that

    • I'm not sure if the EEEPC comes with 3G or not. For < $200, I'm getting wifi, 3G, bluetooth etc.

Anyway, I'm happy with the purchase as I'm learning a lot from others about how to handle purchases through COTD and how to make the Acer Aspire One perform better.

Apart from a great netbook, plenty of learning …

  • Hey I'm trying to connect to my postpaid vodafone sim through the Next G connection manager but I get an error message "Cannot connect. Please try again." The reception bars on Vodafone are at high so not sure what the problem is…

    • I gave a detailed solution on page 5 on what to install and uninstall - follow those instructions, but change the APN to "live.vodafone.com" or "vfprepaymbb".

    • I had the same problem, someone else suggested to leave Telstra Next G pop up window open and have been connected to Vodaphone without hassles.
That is if you don't want to change anything.

  • Is it just my netbook or do all you also find that despite the 3-cell battery depleting far too quickly for my liking… the little beast takes a looooong time to fully charge up!?

Other than the battery, it's a good little machine.

Quick questions - does the self done RAM upgrade void the warranty?

Might try and install Ubuntu like some of the others here have done - will be my first time running Linux.

    • Yes when I power up I am lucky to get 90 minutes from a charge on battery . Yes it does seem to take maybe 3 to 4 hours from what I can observe.

    • i was wonderin the same thing. would changing the RAM void the warranty.

  • there was no windows cd in the box, anyone know how you would reformat with the acer windows serial key?

    • Check the blue sticker underneath the laptop. It will only work for Windows 7 Starter Edition

    • It comes with a utility to burn the recovery DVDs and the drivers/apps DVD. You'll need a USB DVD writer. It's probably possible to burn to ISO which you could then transfer and burn on another computer, but I haven't tried it.

      • Made a backup image that took 2 DVDs. You can also make a system repair disk.

  • Getting the same options from these guys and they wont budge. The netbook is great overall, especially since its now on SSD. To be honest, I'm not seeing any gains on the ram upgrades. I've gone through a number of netbooks in the past with RAM upgrades and different OS's. The performance gains IMO comes from the SSD.

Havent chosen an option either. Given that I've changed HW on this already (SSD + RAM), guess I'm stuck with the measly $10 rebate! Crap service overall. Seal on the actual box was broken as well. On top of waiting nearly two weeks after the order.

    • Really? I think there were a few that had done RAM upgrades in this thread and reported improvement.

Anyone else done the RAM upgrade (and not SSD) and feel the improvement was marginal?

      • " RAM upgrade (and not SSD)" … think that's the key point. Might be that the improvement gains by adding the SSD understates the RAM gains from the RAM upgrade

        • So, what you're saying is that it's sufficient do one or the other - but doing both not going to change the world X2. Cheers.

        • -1

Look, SSD and Ram are going to improve different things full stop. I have only put 2gb in mine so far, no SSD yet. I think multitasking is a bit better and it is overall ever so slightly smoother. For $15 it was a no brainer to me.

An SSD will have a more dramatic change for sure, but will largely concern loading times for programs/boot and transferring files, multitasking etc may be slightly improved also thanks to a much faster page file.

For the price of the netbook itself ~$170-200 to get a 128GB SSD I don't think it is worth it. But if you are wanting to squeeze all the power you can from the netbook go for it.

My biggest concern with these netbooks is how poor the battery is. It doesn't last long at all and takes probably 3-4 times the run time to charge it to full power again which is a bit silly. An SSD may improve battery times a little bit due to no moving parts.

My netbook also runs surprisingly hot but this has never and will not likely ever bother me.

Compared to an iPad worth over double this, with next to zero functionality of a netbook with Windows… I know which I would prefer and which has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more bang for my buck (and general usability). I needed a travel computer with USB to download photos from my camera and process them in lightroom/photoshop. This little beauty is perfect, and for $200 a bloody laugh!

I've already spent my voucher from CotD on the shoes that were for sale a week or so ago, and an extra $10 is ok (though 15-20 would have been much better). I'm disappointed at the battery stuff up but oh well - you still won't get a better deal anywhere else to be frank. I've bought a 6-cell batt from eBay to try out.

You have to realise that CotD is worthy of being compared to NQR / reject shop / et al. There is an element of risk, and that is why things are so cheap. If you don't want to take the risk. Don't gamble. It's as simple as that. Go pay normal prices from JB Hi-Fi or even try haggle if you could be bothered. No harm in doing any of these things, or even in expressing dismay at CotD. They have offered a full refund. If you want it (feeling ripped off???) take it.

Everyone on here largely (as to be expected) is just trying to get better freebies etc and whinge their way to an even better deal.

        • +3

Purchasing from any retailer in Australia should NEVER be a 'game of chance'. That's why we have consumer protection & fair trading laws Thiefsie! Honestly mate, that's a pathetic attitude for a consumer to have, and if enough people cop out like that it only sends the message to unscrupulous retailers like COTD that it's ok to conduct deceptive business practices.

They have offered a full refund. If you want it (feeling ripped off???) take it.

          Agreed.

However, I'd also punctuate that message to COTD with a complaint to the ACCC, but that's just me! ;)

Everyone on here largely (as to be expected) is just trying to get better freebies etc and whinge their way to an even better deal.

Get off your high horse. Looks to me like most people here are either trying to get the advertised specs that they paid for or suitable recompense to offset the difference. You even point out the inherent deficits yourself:

My biggest concern with these netbooks is how poor the battery is. It doesn't last long at all and takes probably 3-4 times the run time to charge it to full power again which is a bit silly.

Just because you admit that you blew your refunds on other COTD junk already, doesn't give you the right to second-guess the motivations of the other people here simply seeking equity.

        • +1

Where else can you get anything close to this for under $200 let alone $169/$189 ($269/289) with free postage, with or without a 6-cell battery? All from sitting at your desk?

Yes it isn't to spec, mistakes happen. CotD aren't viciously trying to rip you off mate… they were given specs that they thought they were selling, they offer a refund. As per ACCC or any other legal recourse… they are doing everything legitimately by offering a full refund. Do you have proof they were/are being deceptive?

If you can't handle that then yes you are the whinging tightwad wanting to push them for better deals etc. for your own gain.

Companies do not have to offer better deals for a client when it is their own mistake. Honouring an incorrect price or giving it away is not a legal requirement. Some companies take the customer service route and follow through further (a la Coles over pricing something and you walk out, but return to get it free if you bring it up). CotD does not - and that does not give you right to demand some sort of penalty to them.

Suitable recompense would be $15 + Postage ($10?) as that is what Acer quotes the price differences between 3-6 cell batteries. We got $20 store credit (albeit for a separate issue), $10 refund and the option of a full refund… Realistically what more do you want? Acer/CotD to go bankrupt?
Yes you might want them to fully confirm specs etc before they go to sale, but you know what? Their business works by cutting out that crap and relying on their suppliers for correct information and probably virtually drop-shipping it from their warehouse. Suddenly if those extra checks are brought in everything goes up in price.

And nope I've bought stuff from CotD that I've wanted for a while and am perfectly happy with it. I don't buy their junk that I'm sure a lot of people do… Each to their own.

Your last point… 'equity' is a full refund. Take it, move on… go play with your kids or something. Never purchase from CotD again. Problem solved minus the effort to send it back etc. Which is of course a risk with ANY sale where you do not sight goods and take it with you at point of sale.

I suggest you shop at Myer or David Jones for a more comfortable retail/equity experience from now on.

        • +2

@Thiefsie, all of that waffle is utterly irrelevant. I'm amazed that you don't seem to be comprehending this one simple concept mate, so I'll put it in really simple, bold terms for you:

As a consumer you have a legal right to expect that the product you purchase meets the description (specifications) as advertised…end of story!!! You also have equally legislated options to attain that balance, only ONE of which is refund! If you're too much of a pussy to stand up for those rights, then good for you; I'm sure you're the kind of dream customer PT Barnum once talked about; but you sure as hell don't have the right to label those people that do have the intestinal fortitude to make a stand "whingers"! Pull your head in mate!

Now, I'm sure that your new dodgy generic battery from ebay cost more than the $10 offered…and more than the supposed $15 difference. Hell, if you're happy to bend over for a $10 refund then that must be awesome for you; but don't go claiming that you got the netbook for "$169/$189" because you clearly didn't. You had to spend more money to try to offset the original battery that you yourself describe as "poor"!

As for me, no I didn't buy one…why the hell would I deal with COTD, I'm not an idiot! :p

    • My seal was also broken… they won't budge on this either…

  • Well got mine.. first of all.. its WHITE not Grey/Black as advertised if I remmeber correctly?

and well I was shocked but its already been covered… 3 cell instead of 6.. only lasts 2hours ish….

HAS ANYONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH AN AFTERMARKET BATTERY THAT LASTS AT LEAST 5 HOURS FOR THEIR ACER ASPIRE ONE?

Installed 2GB Ram from MSY… PATRIOT RAM failed and did not boot up at all.

Used G.Skill from MSY works perfectly and booted up, ram isnt about boosting that much performance its more for multitasking.

Will probably be putting an SSD in the near future if I can find a better battery.

Surprisingly.. the telstra USB wireless modem DOES NOT WORK BUT the one built into the laptop works? weird.. but the net is super fast, 11mbps or wateva on speedtest.

… 6 Cell and it would have been perfect.

    • was that the $14 ddr3 laptop ram from msy?

      • +1

yes $14 one from MSY. GSkill or the Kingston (HAS TO BE 4 Banks per side, NOT 8)

        • I brought the $17 kingston 2Gb RAM and it works like a dream!

        • What's the specs on this.. They all look pretty much the same.. ??? Thanks

        • What's the specs on this.. They all look pretty much the same.. ??? Thanks

          GSkill has 8 banks???

        • +1

          Thanks. Worked perfectly.

Anyone who is interested. G.Skill f3-10666CL9S-2GBSQ is the model. Works!

        • Hi …you saying Kingston should have 4 banks or GSkil 8?

        • No.. the Gskill and I think Kingston have 4 banks Per side. Patriot has 8 per side.

        • Unfortunately no. i was hoping any fellow ozbargainer has purchased their ram online that can help me out.

      • They need to have 4 banks (referred to as single rank) on the each side.

If they have 8 banks on each side (referred to as dual rank) then it might not work.

        • Would any of this work ?

$14.00 G.Skill 2GB DDR3 Notebook RAM according to MSY Computers has 8 banks

Kingston 2GB DDR3 Notebook RAM has 4 banks according to MSY.

        • both the gskill and kingston 2gb ram DDR3 ram from MSY will work on this laptop. Difference is really the price between these two. gskill has a lifetime warranty so I'd stick with this given it is $3 cheaper…

is this the one u got? im getting so confused which one to buy

        • That's the same model number, but the picture is different from how mine looks.

Alot of people just show any old picture. I would ask them if this has 4 chips/banks per side (as there might be different versions of the same model number).

          No MSY near you?

        • Unfortunately no. i was hoping any fellow ozbargainer has purchased their ram online that can help me out.

        • ewik thanks for ur help. is this the one? is this wat u mean by the banks having 4chips per side?

        • That picture has 8 banks per side. Try ordering from static ice - the strontium model works and is the cheapest at $11 plus postage.

        • Sorry about the late reply. Here's a link to what the ram should look like:

This kingston ram will 100% work for this netbook, the downside thought it's expensive compared to MSY.

    • re battery

my aspire D250 is great with the 12-cell I bought on ebay

      • Do you have a link? How long have you had it?
I bought two generic camera batteries. They were OK but they did not last as long as the originals.

      • how long does it last?

    • Just upgraded my netbook with the GSkill ram from MSY for $14 and it runs much smoother - especially when scrolling internet pages. Well worth the upgrade! Takes about 10min to install. Gskill has 8 banks total - four on either side which is what you need.

  • Hey ezza…can you please confirm that you got your Next G post paid working on this netbook?

Bought one for the folks and it arived in Perth yesterday.

Came with the extra 12 months warranty card in the box, and the Next G stickering…Next G is something they would be looking to use in the near future, and may sway them to keeping this.

  • had 24 month warranty in the box from acer. So COTD are offering $10, disgraceful. i also cannot get the 3g to work. do we use the telstra mobile broadfband program or do we unintall it and install something else? I have an amaysim prepaid sim. anyone know the brand of 3g modem installed or how to check if it has been installed in the netbook.

    • It's unlock but you have to leave Telstra window open to work on any other network or change settings

    • I posted the 3G modem model no in one of the earlier comments pages. Can't remember now, but it's an Ericsson (there's only one Ericsson listed) and you can get it from the Acer Aus support website.

I also use Amaysim. Uninstalled all the Telstra 3G crap and use the windows Network & Sharing Center to dial in (the 3G modem shows up as a Mobile Broadband network connection). Ensure you change your APN (in the case of Amaysim, the APN is "internet".)

Also, hit Fn-F3 and ensure the modem's switched on.

  • For those still trying to decide whether to take option 1 or 2, CoTD has confirmed that the return/refund offer is only valid until COB 23 Feb 2012.

Check out one of the tech deals today…best be changing that weight description…people will want to know where their 0.2 kg went!

    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

    "only 1.25kg"

    "3-Hour battery life"

    "Weighs only 1.05kg"

    "12 Month Warranty"

    • And it still disclaims that it's "not compatible" with the Telstra NG network! Strange.

Where the heck is the rep on all these posts, hey QQQ your silence is being taken as a big insult to us at Ozbargain…..we should all vote to have COTD deals banned from this site. It is ridiculous to think they can scam us and get away with it. I am going to take them to court over this, I am an old fart with a law degree and nothing better to do so who is with me?
