      • Bluetooth works, but I dont know how good tho.

        only did a quick test.

    • Hold function, then F3. When the thing comes up turn on bluetooth.

    • oh yeah and about the sim card, mine works- took 5mins to get it working but I cant remember how I did it o.O

I'll have another look and see how I got the sim card working

    • I'm using mine with a BT mouse. Works fine. You may need to tap Fn-F3 and turn it on first like I did.

  • Anyone confirmed whether they will work with NG?

    • I can confirm NG/3G works just fine

  • Anyone tried the webcam on theirs?
    - If I click on the Acer - webcam app from the start menu it tells me there's no image capture device on the computer
    - am I missing something?

    • webcam works on mine :/

In addition to earlier inspections by the Catch Compliance team, I have also physically inspected a sample and can confirm that the RAM (memory) contained is Samsung M471B2873FHS-CH9.

This RAM is clearly listed on the Samsung website as DDR3 RAM. The presence of DDR3 RAM is consistent with the Catch advertisement and sticker on the netbook palmrest. In addition, and as confirmed by the Intel website, the Intel Atom N550 CPU (processor) used by the netbook is only compatible with DDR3 RAM. Any erroneous information that has been labelled on the exterior of the box packaging suggesting that the RAM is DDR2 should be disregarded.

ANYONE else agree that COTD/ACER should reimburse us with the 6 Cell battery as Advertised either in a physical product or a partial refund of at least $70 (including delivery) to get the 6 cell Batteries from other sources.

Also voice this with the ACCC. Complaint form

    • i strongly agree. if no resolution by COTD is made by the end of the week i highly encourage everyone to lodge a complaint with Fair Trading/ACCC.

  • This whole thing is quite bizarre. The one disclaimer the advertising spiel did make was that it was not going to work with Telstra NG. Then, the kit arrives and there couldn't possibly be more promotion for Telstra on it!

Labels on the box, model name, sticker, flyer etc.

Anyone else note manufacture was 2010? Not the newest of beasts, but as long as specs are sorted that doesn't matter.

    • -1

I'm more concerned about the age of the battery, presumably also dating back to 2010. Bad enough to be slugged by a half size battery compared to advertised, then to be further hit by more than a year of battery ageing.

      Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Cell_life

  • Most ppl did not buy it because of Telstra….

    For major problems with goods
    You can:

    • reject the goods and get a refund
    • reject the goods and get an identical replacement, or one of similar value if reasonably available, or
    • keep the goods and get compensation for the drop in value caused by the problem.

You get to choose, not the supplier or manufacturer.

A major problem with goods is when:
the goods are significantly different from the description, sample or demonstration model shown to you. For example, a person orders a red bicycle from a catalogue, but the bicycle delivered is green

  • Can someone confirm which way the sim card goes in to the slot for G connection and if it's lock to Telstra? I don't want to risk it and not be able to pull out if wrong … Thanks.

    • Use some dental floss when you insert it. Orientation of the SIM is in the "3G quick guide" book.

    • Netbook is unlock

look closely near sim card slot, there picture telling you which way to insert

      • Thanks guys….

  • Finally got mine (Sydney). White. Nice looking device. Sticker on the front clearly says 3 cell battery. According to Whirlpool the RAM is DDR3.

  • function + F3 turns on and installs bluetooth.

COTD replied to the email I sent yesterday asking for a partial refund of $50 saying it has been done. I thought this was a fair amount to ask for given I would have paid $149 for a 3 cell netbook.

On a side note - as an online business operator myself - when you send an email about a problem it is always best if you include the outcome you would like. My email to COTD was short and sweet.

"Received netbook with 3 cell instead of a 6 cell battery. Please send me a 6 cell battery or process a partial refund of $50.00."

At the end of the day it is only a netbook - life is too short to get worked up over some plastic and silicone.

COTD replied to the email I sent yesterday asking for a partial refund of $50 saying it has been done.

Oh really…looks like the precedent has been set.

      • did they really give u a refund of $50?

According to Whirlpool, COTD are apparently sending out a generic email which I havent yet received, but importantly notes:

"We are also prepared to offer a $10 cash refund to reflect the difference between the two batteries when last sold by Acer Australia."

        10 bucks?!?!

    • is it credit card refund or store credit?
is it for someone who asks for it or every purchaser?

      • +1

        1 - Credit Card
2 - No idea. I just emailed them and asked for it.

    • +1

Wouldnt count on a refund , still waiting on $58.95 promised by QQQ as per heading on this thread

      • $50 refund has been processed to my credit card as stated by COTD. I guess I got lucky on this one.

        • Did you really get a refund as Derek from COTD is saying the never provided anyone with a refund and the only options are to take $10 refund or send it back for a full refund. Can you scan and post just the part of your credit card (of course block out all the other details) where it says they refunded you, so we can have something to go back to them on?

  • No stock of the appropriate Acer 6-cell battery from the Melbourne spare parts dealer… I'll be looking for $50 back I guess..

  • Check your inbox,

Just received an offer for a full refund, or an extra years warranty and $10 bucks, probably another credit.

    Edit- says cash refund

  • Just got the email:

Our records indicate that you recently purchased an Acer Aspire One 3G netbook computer.

Unfortunately, we made a mistake and the battery specifications for this product were
incorrectly described at the time of your purchase. The product was described as featuring a
six-cell battery with up to six hours battery life. The product actually includes a
three-cell battery with up to three hours battery life. Whilst the three-cell battery
provides reduced battery life, the netbook is significantly lighter (1.05kg not 1.25kg with
    battery).

We’d love to make amends and exchange the right size battery. We’ve searched high and
low, but do not have any available stock. To ensure you are not disadvantaged by our
mistake, we are pleased to offer the following options to you:

Option 1 – Refund you the difference in battery cost and offer you more for free!

We are prepared to extend the warranty of your netbook computer to two years from date of
invoice (that’s one year more than originally advertised). This extended warranty is
provided by Acer Australia and valued at over $49!

We are also prepared to offer a $10 cash refund to reflect the difference between the two
batteries when last sold by Acer Australia.

Even better – You remain eligible to redeem $99 cashback as part of Acer’s cashback
promotion in accordance with their terms and conditions set out at:
    http://www.shopacer.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Load…

To select Option 1, please submit a Support Ticket via the CatchOfTheDay.com.au Help Centre:
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/helpcenter/index.php?_m=tick…

To facilitate prompt processing of your Support Ticket, please clearly document your
CatchOfTheDay.com.au Order Number, your netbook computer’s serial number (SNID) and Option
    1 as your preference.

Option 2 – A full refund on product return if you just want out

If you are dissatisfied with the reduced battery specification of your netbook computer and
do not wish to take up Option 1, we are prepared to provide a prompt refund on return of the
    netbook computer.

To select Option 2, please submit a Return request via the CatchOfTheDay.com.au Help Centre:
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/helpcenter/index.php?_m=know…
    p;kbarticleid=46#returnwarranty

To facilitate prompt processing of your Return request, please clearly document the netbook
computer’s serial number (SNID) and Option 2 as your preference.

Approved returns will be required to securely pack and send the netbook computer, along with
any original packaging that you still have available, to the instructed Reply Paid address.
This option is ineligible for Acer’s cashback promotion.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and look forward to your next Catch with us!

when i thought COTD couldnt get any worse…

    • Difference between 3 and 6-cell is $15 as quoted from Acer spares in Melbourne to me today.

      Battery SANYO AL10B Li-Ion 3S2P SANYO 6 cell 4400mAh Main COMMON ID:AL10B31
Part no : BT.00603.114. price $85+$15 Freight. NO stock.

      BATTERY SANYO AL10A LI-ION 3S1P SANYO 3 CELL 2200MAH MAIN COMMON ID:AL10A31
      Part no : BT.00303.022 . Price : $70+Freight $15. Instock

      • I thought COTD said Acer didnt have stock?

        • it says no stock above

      • +1

It may well be $15 the difference, if you don't have a battery to start with… As you said it cost $85 unless you trade in the 3 cell for $70 and pay $15 all up ???

      • +1

I think CoTD should offer a 3rd option of allowing customers to return just the 3-cell battery then be refunded $85+$15, which is the cost of the 6-cell when it was in stock and hopefully when it will be in stock in the future.

  • +1

I knew Catch of the day was going to screw me again. I still didnt get the computer and they are offering me this joke. Extended warranty? I get that for free on my credit card, why would I pay $49 for it??? I also called acer and they were not happy with the invoice games cotd was playing and they may not honour the cash back.

I asked for $50 back like the lady above but cotb have been silent on a reply.

    • On my invoice it says it was dispatched 2 days before it was ordered. It's not going to fool anyone that something has been doctored.

      • yeah, im getting a tad worried that acer will not honour the cash back.. i think this will definitely be my last purchase on cotd. so much hassle.

        • the snid barcode on the box has been covered with a sticker and a different barcode and number, it all seems very dodgy I wont be very happy if I dont get the cashback as promised!

  • Should I take the $10 offer or Request for a refund?

    • -1

      —-=== Option 1 ===—-

I'm going to take Option 1

I cant be stuff asking for anything else and it will just upset me even more.

Anyhow I already purchased a 9 CELL Battery 7800 mAh off eBay for $35.19AUD

  • I too asked for 50 dollars back as the only reason I bought this netbook was for the battery life. Otherwise I would've picked up an old laptop for 100 bucks with just as much power. The way I see it the 50 dollars will go towards buying a non oem 6 cell battery and shipping which again is still not what I paid for but I'll settle for that.

    • Same here, will be sending the notebook overseas, so the extended warranty really doesn't mean much to me.

    • +1

Please post again if you get your $50 refund. If they have agreed to that with one buyer they need to honour that for all.

      • Got an email back basically saying it's just the two options provided in the email.
So no 50 bucks back to buy the battery this thing was supposed to come with. Offered to send back the 3 cell but no dice. Kind of annoying as they say they can't source it but Acer america still has plenty of stock of them for sale on their website for 40 bucks but won't ship to consumers in australia.

I'm going to hold off on my decision until this thing rocks up seeing as it's still saying lodged on the australia post tracking. If it doesn't rock up in time for me to post the $99 rebate stuff in then I'll apply for the refund.

  • +3

Regarding the $10 + extended warranty they're offering - my laptop already came with a piece of paper stating that I had an extended 24 month warranty.

I don't need a 6-cell battery, so all-in-all I think it's a pretty good deal. $200 netbooks just aren't available anymore, regardless of specs, and an in-built quad-band 3G modem is pretty sweet.

However if you care only about the battery life, then I can understand the frustration, and $10 doesn't go very far to fixing it.

  • +1

Geez Jen, $10 ! How about you keep your $10 and give me a better battery when it becomes available. I did pay for it after all

  • +1

COTD, pls provide the option cash back WITHOUT extent warrant, and pls check how much we need to pay extra for Acer 6 cell battery. (not unknown brand replace 6 cell battery!)

PLS LOOK AFTER YOUR CUSTOMER! THANKS!

    • +2

Check the box. There is a sheet of paper saying the warranty has already been extended to 24 months. COTD is trying to trick you by providing this as an option.
Don't offer to pay extra for a 6 cell. You've already paid for that right

  • +3

it seems that COTD are being deceptive. just called acer to see how much warranty you accually recieve and you accually get 2 years as standard. (as per the warranty card in the box). in their apology email regarding the battery option one offered 1 year additional warranty making it 2 years. however it already is 2 years. really they are just offering $10?!!!?!?!

    • +2

I revoke my positive because this deal is one big stuff up, now they are making false claims about additional warranty.

  • alright so i've re-email COTD to see what else they do about this…

otherwise i've opened, charged the netbook etc and i'm on it right now.

I have a next g wiresless internet contract, taken the SIM out of the modem and put it in the netbook, it detected it fine, then 'telstra pre-paid mobile broadband' app.

keeps saying on the bottom thati haven't registered my prepaid service and the connect button is greyed out… but i click on 'register' an internet page pops up and tells me the telstra page can't be found - obviously its trying to register my sim to a prepaid service, but its post-post.

as long as i keep that particular page open in the background, the internet stays connected and i can open another internet explorer page to navigate around the web (like this one).. the moment i close that particular page where it tried to register then off goes the internet..

Strange???? how do you overcome this???? i dont want to use prepaid and use my current postpaid wireless sim.

    • I'm thinking its something in the broadband manager setting?!?

      • You might have to put in telsta details in 3G connection (APN etc) and should work fine.
in network connections your sim card should show and if click on properties thats where you enter your telstra details.

    • +1

I had same troubles and more, but now have it working perfectly on Telstra and Vodafone 850MHz networks.

I uninstalled both of the Telstra/NextG connection managers, then installed updated modem drivers from Acer:

      http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/3G/3G_Ericsso… One&Step3=AOD255&OS=722&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=AAP_10

These drivers work perfectly with the Windows 7 built-in connection manager - just got to set the APN to "telstra.internet" by right-clicking on "Telstra Mobile" which appears where the wifi networks appear (ie. "Network Connections" in system tray).

      • anyone know how to install android on this netbook?

      • Excellent!!! I'll try this when I get home tonight!! Soo odd cotd advertised this as not being next g compatible yet it's branded over it everywhere lol!! Lucky I took my changes.. Now for a RAM and SSD upgrade ;)

  • Hey QQQ or Jen,
If we choose the full refund, when will we get it ? I'm fed up with the lies and broken promises

    • i'd say 2-6 weeks. almost the same time as their delivery times

  • Just confirmed my SNID number on the extra sticker on the box is valid for cashback from ACER, so I guess all should.
After 40 minutes on the phone with ACER Tec Support, they confirmed it is
    1GB PC1333Mhz SODIMM upgradeable to 2GB.

  • Anyone actually manage to upgrade their RAM yet?

I installed a Patriot Signature 2GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 and it won't boot. This stick works fine in my other laptop (Thinkpad T410).

    • I got this from the net: www.upgradeable.com.au

      Manufacturer SpecificationsManufacturer's Part No: LU.SDH0D.xxx, LU.SDJ0D.xxx, LU.SDP0D.xxx, LU.SDR0D.xxx, LU.SEV0D.xxx
      Available Expansion: 1 slot(s)
Maximum Memory: Supports up to 2GB

      Standard Memory: 1GB
      Fixed Memory: 0MB

      Product Notes
The Acer Aspire One D255 (AOD255) using the Intel Atom N550 processor only takes the DDR3 memory. There are two ways to manufacturer a 2GB DDR3 SODIMM module. In generic computer shops, they will only stock cheap modules created using lower capacity chips. These modules are not compatible with the Acer netbook. You need to use a module made with higher capacity chips

      Hope it's helpful to others…

    • Thanks all.

    • I upgraded fine with Samsung M471B5773DH0-CH9 which is 2GB DDR3. I think it came from a MacBook.

It was a bit unnerving removing the F4 and F12 keys by lifting them at the top. I don't think its really necessary as long as you can push the clips above those keys in with the edge of credit card or something. (You can push the keyboard out with 2 holes exposed after removing the battery.)
I also didn't remove the keyboard completely and left the flex connected the whole time.

    • +1

Update on the RAM. Swapped the Patriot RAM for G.Skill - works fine now. Patriot had 8 chips per side and didn't work. G.skill has 4 chips per side (same as standard 1GB chip) and works fine. Both are currently $14 at MSY. Hope this helps someone.

      • Would the Kingston chip that MSY sell be a better quality option for only $3 more? ($17)

I may swing by there tomorrow with the kids after swimming and grab some. Was the upgrade process reasonably easy to do without marking the casing? I saw some guy doing it on Youtube and he did a bit of a hatchett job!

Noticeable difference in operation with the extra gig?

        • Not sure if the Kingston is better quality. AFAIK RAM is RAM and if it works, then there's not much diff unless you want to overclock.

Easy to do without marking once you've done it before! Note that the keyboard backing is quite soft, so use only an old credit card to push the tabs in. Take the battery out and push down the plastic panel above the kbd so that you can get some leverage under the kbd with the credit card. Note that some of the lugs don't push in, so you'll just have to ease the kbd out around them. Once kbd is out, it's dead easy. Remove "door" screws (4 of them) and push thru the hole. There are several youtube videos out there, watch a few and not just the one with the highest no of views!

As for performance, I swapped the HDD as well and did a full restore. Runs quite nicely… better than I expected for an Atom with only 2GB…

        • Yes, but the picture is different. Best if you bring the netbook there to test when you buy.

  • Got the netbook yesterday. Having gone through around 5 netbooks over the same number of years, I quite like this.

Too bad that the battery supplied is only 3cell (yup, COTD, you should do this to customers!), I've requested for a rebate of around $50 as well as I want to keep the netbook.

I've upgraded it straight away without even booting it.

I've added or am using a 60GB OCZ SSD with Win7 Pro 32-bit and have to admit, it's quite fast! I downloaded all the drivers from the Acer site. Now only lacking the touchpad driver as I dont know which one to use. Any ideas?

Now I'm planning to add more juice by adding 4GBs of RAM. I ordered this, Notebook DDR3 Ram 4GB (1x4GB) PC-10666 1333MHz G.Skill. Hopefully its compatible

With regards to 3G connection (which is the main reason I bought this), I was able to connect right away USING the standard Win7 wireless connection, which recognize Mobile connection. I just had to change the Telstra APN accordingly.

    Questions:
    - Which Touchpad driver should I use? The Acer tool which detects the hardware didnt show the touchpad.
    - Audio driver. Should I update? Using standard windows ATM

    COTD, please provide more rebate!!!

    • Hi… How did you change Telstra APN settings .. I am using Voda sim and have to Telstra open to stay connected …Thanks.

    • dont think it will work, from the above, looks like max ram is 2GB… , wonder if thats a CPU limitation… wonder if it will just ignore the rest…

      • You're correct, the Intel site it says CPU is limited to 2Gb.

    • Do you have a link to some instructions I can use to change the HDD to a SSD one?? maybe better to back up whats on it now and then upgrade so I dont loose anything like drivers etc?

  • H All,

Just upgraded to 2GB and works very well.

I HAVE AN EXTRA 2GB MODULE FOR SALE if you are interested (Northern beaches or CBD, mail me: adamnethosting AT gmail DOT com)

    I followed this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccmU4h5HkwE&feature=related

    Good luck! :)

    • Hi whats the exact spec of the 2GB ram? Planning to add this - Notebook DDR3 Ram 2GB PC-10600 1333MHz Elixier. No longer adding the 4GB which probably won't work

      • It came out of my brand new MacBook Pro (when upgraded from 4 Gb to 8 Gb), so they are pretty good quality (now my little dude has a little Mac Pro in him :)

Anyway, the brand is Hynix (got 4 chips on both sides if that matters)

        • Hi .. how many pins is that ..I get confused .. some have 200 / 204 // 240 ??? Thanks

    • What are you all spending on RAM - prices above look exy. Shouldn't it be around $15-$20 for DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM 2GB? I think the Kingston is about $17. Sound about right?

      • Notebook DDR3 Ram 2GB PC-10600 1333MHz Elixier - Getting this for $18

  • Got my computer today, but no invoice! Could someone please tell me where it is meant to be, and what it is meant to look like?

    • +1

You need to print it off the COTD website. Log in and look at your order history.

      • Thank you!

    • +1

Login to your COTD account Select account and then view purchases.select "invoice" and another scren will pop up.

    • +1

u need to sign into your account with cotd. U can print the invoice from there.

  • Another potentially naive question, but there are a bunch of barcodes which say SNID on them. There's one on the outside box and another on the inside box. Which of these should I send?

    • +2

The one on the inside box - the box with the pretty netbooks on them in all the colours of the rainbow…

      • Thanks!

Has anyone in WA received their laptop yet? I'm still waiting…waiting….waiting

    • Still waiting and checking the auspost site OCD like.
Guess it's not coming today then seeing as it still says "Lodged" and it's past 3pm.
If it doesn't rock up in time to post in the rebate then sorry COTD it's going back to you.

    • I'm in QLD and got it today. Hope you'll get your today too.
