    4k 60hz or 2k 144hz for a 27inch?

    • +4

4k is too small, i had this and sold it for a 34" ultra wide

    • 144hz if you have a rig that will play games at more than 60fps.
      4k 60hz otherwise.

    • -6

Never do 60hz in 2021, minimum would be 75hz, as for some reason 75hz feels much superior to 60hz but 144hz 2K is the way to go!

    • +3

Despite everyone on ozbargain raving about refresh rates frankly that's just trying to be cool without actually putting any real thought into your question. Unless you're competitive fps playing then refresh rates are unlikely to be a problem at 60hz

      1. Are you ok gaming with the refresh rate on your current monitor? Go into your operating system settings, it's probably 60hz. If you're happy then don't buy a monitor with higher refresh rates!

      2. If you're happy with your refresh rate, go 4k 60hz if you want more screen realestate (resolution).

If you want neither refresh or screen realestate then don't buy one of these monitors. Saves you cash and avoid the risk of dealing with issues associated with dpi scaling (which you will use if the text is too small to read). Albeit if you're not running old software then dpi scaling issues probably won't affect you either. I'm not sure what 4k is like at 27" but to give you an idea I'm still using 125% dpi scaling for 4k 43".. So you'll definitely need to turn it on.

Honestly, for every day use, I would still recommend 144 Hz or higher, ideally OLED based, but that's not great advice for the current market.

4K is lovely for stills and high res video, but refresh rate is king for everything else, and HFR video is going to be coming into vogue over the next 18-24 months for live and documentry footage.

This is a great secondary monitor, not something that I would ever recommend for primary or gaming use longer term.

        • …unless like me you barely notice the difference in refresh rate. Getting a 144Hz monitor was a letdown. In fact I've gone a few days after making driver changes where I didn't even notice anything was off. In hindsight Fortnite, which I was playing a fair bit, was a bit "jerkier" maybe sorta if I squint. People's vision works differently.

          • +1

@syousef: make sure you change the actual refresh rate in the display settings. i know you likely have but plenty say they see no difference but its because they didnt update their settings from 60hz

            • @jonnys1n: Thanks. I've got a comp sci degree and have worked in IT for a couple of decades. I've got the settings right according to the OSD on the monitor, the NVidia control panel, and the Windows Display Settings. And I've got my FPS capped at 144fps on Fortnite. (My card is a little older, so when testing I have to turn settings down just a bit to get that 144fps). My son can see the difference. I can…maybe…if I look very hard for it.

          • @syousef: What LCD tech was this monitor? If it's not TN, 144Hz is unlikely to be the kind of jump that you'd expect if you've experienced CRT performance.

    • +1

I bought this monitor from a previous deal and using it for the last couple of months, I think 4K is a little too dense for a 27".

If you're planning on mainly movie/tv show consumption on it, then 4K/HDR would be the choice.

If you're mainly gaming, or really anything else, then grab the 1440p, much better experience at 27" IMO.

      • What happens if you set your resolution to 1080p? Does it look terrible?

        • +1

It wouldn't look good, what you would do in practice is increase the display scaling so that objects/text are larger but still running at native resolution.

      • What are your thoughts on this productivity work / office / browsing - replacing my 23" FHD monitor I got for only a hundred bucks less 4 years ago?

  • +1

    Beast of a monitor!

Thanks, bought my 1st Dell monitor.

    • Me too!
      Thanks OP.

    • +3

With the number of Dell deals coming through, it won't be your last!

Full disclosure: I now have 3 Dell monitors!

      • Question: when is your 4th?

        • Haha - hopefully not for a while!

      • bought one …have the 4 k without height adjustment and it’s great ….except no height adjustment, at this price i will treat myself to a new monitor …..old one will be used on the olddd PC ….

    • So now you have A dell

    • A true ozbargainer has 3 monitors in the study as well as one monitor in each toilet.

      • well now that you gave me the idea i have to do it

  • +5

Great price. I bought the non-s version of this monitor (same panel, different stand) from eBay recently and I really like it.

For $280 if you aren't high refresh gaming on it, it's great.

  • +1

Wow great price, just bought one! I really like how there is height adjustment on dell monitors

  • +1

Was waiting on this exact monitor for this exact price. Bargain with the Stand as well. Under $300 to claim at tax time, incredible value!

Extremely well reviewed for office usage too - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/s2721qs

    • Looks like a very good price

    • +1

Sorry, can you explain this $300 tax claim concept?

      • +3

        https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-detail/Capital-allowances---$300-immediate-deduction-tests/#:~:text=You%20can%20claim%20an%20immediate,amount%20before%20applying%20this%20test.

You can claim an immediate deduction for the cost of a depreciating asset if the cost doesn't exceed $300. The cost of an asset is generally what you pay for it.

If you are entitled to a GST input tax credit in relation to the asset, reduce the cost of the asset by the input tax credit amount before applying this test.

        • So, I am a salaried employee with no ABN and I can still claim this is it? Sorry, I am poor with taxation stuff.

          • +6

@kozb: I believe you don't need an ABN, you just need to satisfy ALL of these tests:

Under the capital allowance rules, the immediate deduction is available for depreciating assets you start to hold (for example, buy or receive as a gift) from 1 July 2001.

Test 1 – the cost of the depreciating asset is $300 or less.
Test 2 – you use the asset mainly for the purpose of producing assessable income that isn't income from carrying on a business.
Test 3 – the asset isn't part of a set of assets you start to hold in the income year that costs more than $300.
Test 4 – the asset isn't one of a number of identical or substantially identical assets you start to hold in the income year that together costs more than $300.

            https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-detail/Capital-allowances---$300-immediate-deduction-tests/

That link should work and provides detailed examples to help you out.

This is not financial advice. DYOR

            • @putshan: By test 4, can’t buy 2 and instant write off?
Also… can I claim that I’m using these for self education and instant write off? My tax account is missing unfortunately

              • +3

@diazepam: I cannot tell you what to claim, but let's say someone called DiazepaN asked me, I'd tell them that they should claim the monitor is used for accessing their stock portfolio online which forms part of their income.

                • @putshan: So a salaried employee with working from home purpose can claim this monitor as a full deduction?

            • +1

              @putshan: Thank you. Much appreciated.

        • +1

I bought 2 Dell 27 Monitors S2721DS last week, how can I claim the immediate deduction? I looked online but couldn't find anything useful for individuals (not business). Do I need to mention that while filing the tax return? Thanks, mate.

          • @sam29: Yeah I'm not clear on the "immediate" deduction bit, where do I apply the deduction immediately??

          • @sam29: Just list it as a deduction on your tax return and you can fully claim one of your two screens. List the other one per the normal depreciation schedule.

  • 10% shopback?

    • +3

      0% on monitors

      • didn't see that, still a good price anyway

  • Can I buy two and claim both under the instant tax write off threshold? Hmmm…

    • I think yes, it's under $300 each item

      • +2

i dont think so. when you buy 2 monitors u will claiming percentage of them. not full amount

    • +1

The asset needs to be $300 or less. Each monitor is an asset in its own right.

However, if you're using them to work from home, you can't claim both a deduction for the monitors and 80c for each hour under the temporary shortcut method.

You either use the 80c shortcut, or calculate your deduction for all expenses according to the ordinary rules.

      • "Test 4 – the asset isn't one of a number of identical or substantially identical assets you start to hold in the income year that together costs more than $300."
        https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-detail/Capital-allowances---$300-immediate-deduction-tests/

How is buying 2 of these monitors not breaking test 4 as per the question?

        • different serial numbers

        • +2

Good point. I was obviously tunnel visioning and only thinking about them being separate assets and not how deductions for depreciation applies to identical assets.

  • +1

Just got it for my partner, thanks! What’s the go with claiming it if it’s under $300?

    • I was wondering the same thing

    • My understanding is if you purchase and are planning on claiming any items for work, you can claim the full amount if the item is under $300 from your taxable income. If you purchase over $300, then the item will need to be claimed through depreciation in the next few years…..

But not sure, maybe someone can confirm …

Mostly because of delivery delays - not the monitors actual performance.

    • +4

When comments like "colour is inaccurate in comparison to iMac 27 inch" result with a 1 star, you know you have a monitor diva.

A device failing completely should be 1 star, a device not having correct colours (which you can adjust mind you) should at worst be 3 stars

  • +4

Coming from iMac 27inch 5k, i tried the ultrawide dell monitor which was quite fuzzy. I think for Mac 4K is pretty important if you want to not be bothered by the font resolution (i use it on 1440 though, and it appropriately scales it so i can actually read letters). I personally would not be happy to connect MacBook to a QHD monitor.

But what i absolutely love about this monitor is the out of box colour accuracy, i can really tell it’s not that much different from my MacBook display colour profile (without any calibration).

    • I've got an LG 5k monitor next to my Dell 4k, and i've set the resolution so that windows dragged from one screen to the other retain the same size.

The 5k has an edge in sharpness, but the Dell is still aok to look at.

    • +2

Be aware that this monitor has a PPI of ~163 which is not ideal for use with Macs.
      https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays/

      • Quarter of the price of a 4k Ultrafine tho.. (and no USB-C daisy chaining)
Not too much of a problem since M1 Macs can't display to more than one monitor anyways

  • +3

I am a bit fussy when it comes to picture quality of monitors. I have a wide colour gamut TV and wife colour gamut laptop (both 4K resolution) and this monitor is just as good as them. Can't recommend that enough. I believe it's close to 100% SRGB (which is incredible at this price point) and being IPS colours are very vibrant and viewing angles are really nice. Better yet, it's a flicker free panel (no PWM) which is great. I just don't know how they make them so cheap, I just couldn't fault it at any given category..

    • +1

The only thing i noticed was the edge of the screen greyish hue blur when looking at it from sides, i think it has been mentioned a few times in the online forums but i got used to it very quickly. But I agree, the colour profile was what really shocked me when i trialed this monitor - it was same as MacBook :)

      • I can't comment on the colour accuracy of the S2721QS as I don't have anything to compare it to, but I've been using this monitor for the past 6 months and it's been fantastic. Absolute bargain for the price. Yes, the far left and far right edges do look a bit blurry/fuzzy (similar to the chromatic aberration you see as a post-processing effect in some video games) but it's not a serious problem at all, and your brain ignores it after a while.

  • Thanks finally bought one

  • For reference, I paid $350 for this in February

    • I paid $180 roughly in Feb with a discount voucher and 10% CB, model is S2721Q. These monitors are getting cheaper and cheaper now.

      • $180!? That’s got to be an all-time low! Well done.

  • +2

Jost bought one, anyone knows the delivery time frame? The website seems failed to mention it, but states delivery dates for say Alienware products.

    • +2

Estimated Ship Date: May 20, 2021
Estimated to Arrive By: May 24, 2021

    • Just bought one… In the order page I see…

Estimated Ship Date: May 20, 2021
Estimated to Arrive By: May 24, 2021

    • I just spoke to dell about this monitor and they said they won't have any stock until august.

      • Anyone else confirm this ? Sounds silly.. bit long..

        • I just asked live chat and they said it's in stock. Exact reply - "We do have this model in stock and will be delivered in 7 days acorss (sic) Australia."

        • I got a notification saying mine was shipped today.

    • Already with Startrack for delivery, expected by 21 Fri, maybe today?
      5* for delivery I hope :)

  • I ordered the S2721D a few weeks ago for not that much less than this, thinking I should have waited now.

    • does anyone know what the return policy at Dells ebay store is like?

      • 15% restocking fee for “change of mind” it seems

        https://www.dell.com/learn/au/en/aucorp1/policies-returns

I also bought the QHD DS one for $250 last week

        • the 2 x S2721D arrived a few hours ago. at least 2 weeks ahead of the scheduled delivery date so too late to cancel the order. They're great compared to my previous monitors (3 year old dell 24") so I'm just going to stick with them. The restock fee and slightly higher price aren't enough fo me to return them.

  • Thanks OP.
I just ordered the 32 inch 4k curved one for 100 bucks more (S3221QS)

    • +4

That one is va panel and this is ips. You can feel the difference, ips is better than va.

      • ohhh right.
I was buying a large 4k montior for office use.
Would it make a huge difference (ips vs va) for mainly reading texts?

        • +4

For reading texts, IPS is recommended, but for gaming and movies, VA panel might be better.

        • +1

VA has deeper blacks (not as much IPS glow), but usually requires head-on orientation to get the most color accuracy

      • +1

thanks so much guys saved me a hassle of returning.
I cancelled the va panel one and reordered this one…
It seems like IPS is better in almost every way

        • IPS is much better for text but you won't be buying the screen in this deal for doing office work/text. 4K on a 27" is too much resolution, all the writing is very small and if you crank the windows display scaling to compensate then apps will be rendering wrong and some don't scale at all or incorrectly. This screen is good for watching/editing movies or as a second screen for photo work due to its great color accuracy. If you are buying a primary display then at 27" you are best with a 1440p (2k) display for general tasks as the font is nice and clear, you want at least 30" (ideally 32 or 34) for 4K general/office use.

This is probably the one you want - https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-27-monitor-s2721d/apd/2…

          27" 1440p 75hz IPS

      • Is there a 32" 4k curved ips you can recommend?

    • good price if it was IPS.

  • does anyone know if this is an upgrade from my U2414H 24"?
    thankyou.

    • +1

I've just orderded one to replace my U2415 24". The S2721QS is better across the board except for connectivity i.e. lack of USB ports

      • thank you. ordered one.

    • +1

I've just bought one for my U2412M replacement. From color support and pixel pitch point of view, if you are doing media creation which is a good upgrade for sure.

      • thank you. ordered one.

  • Damn, just received mine last week. Paid about $20+ more….

    • +1

You can ask for a refund, just call dell customer support

  • Brought one .

Even I have 2 extra monitors in the shelves .

  • +7

Thanks Op, bought 1 for the bathroom.
