Supposedly there is no renewal, but there's also no support for .crypto outside of Brave/Opera and no users really willing to install a browser extension to access a .crypto domain…
It's also a MASSIVE waste of money and resources to create an NFT for every single domain, which is what's going on behind the scenes. Huge amounts of power are burned every time. Until Eth2 and similar systems are live, this is just a horrible burn.
