    but I'm liking the M1 MBA better… :+)

Just check online for Physical stock levels before going to avoid disappointment.

M1 macbook is a tesla model s and intel one is a nissan leaf

      • +2

Tesla's are the iPhone of the car world.

        • +2

Not sure if that is a compliment or not

        • @Wizard Porsche's Taycan line ups: Am I a joke to you??

  • +1

There's cashback from the apple education store though.

    • How much?

      • +4

        7% tomorrow i believe

        • 7% cash back confirmed now

          • +1

@Buy2Much: Yep it would make it about $1254 for the base model after cashback if my calculations are correct. You might be able to combine it with a 'refer a friend' $10 off cashback rewards thing too

  • +2

Maybe try price match at jb and use discounted gift cards to get it cheaper?

  • +7

I bought it from Apple Edu Union Store. Base model $1294.70
    https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/

    • That's the same spec too isn't it?

    • +1

They’ve just gotten cheaper in the last couple of days

      • god damnit, 2 weeks after we bought…

        • I think extra ram and SSD space has gone down in price as well? I’ve been holding out for the new MacBooks for a while. Still might opt for a MBA though.

    • Did you have to verify your union membership?

      • +2

I think all Apple EPP and education program works in the same way, they don't ask for verification at time of order but instead they do interim audit.
If you are selected for audit, they will call to ask you for proof.
Source: my partner's colleague was contacted 2 months after purchasing through EPP.

        • But what will they do then?

          • +2

@slipperypete: Charge the card you used for the difference. (They do mention that if you are chosen for audit)
Unless you use your computer in a cave in a non-connected mode, otherwise, just think about all the financial and personal details they have on you.

        • do you know if high school students count for the Apple Education Store thing

          • @YahooChess: No. Tertiary.

          • @YahooChess: Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education are as follows:

            • a full time or part time student aged 18 or over with a current student union card or student identification card and studying at an accredited Australian university or other Apple approved institution;
            • or a lecturer or staff member at an accredited Australian university;
            • or a teacher or lecturer working at an Apple approved and registered education establishment within Australia.
          • @YahooChess: actually if you have an edu email, you can sign up for Unidays. Unidays has better discount than the standard edu store.

    • Will tomorrow's cash back of 7% work with the union store?

      • In the past, no.

  • +5

Nice price but I’m waiting for m2 announcement which should be done at WWDC hopefully

    • +16

Actually I’m waiting for the M9

    • There's no way they will release an updated version of the M1 chip so soon, especially considering they released the new iMac with the same M1 chip.

      • -1

Probably not in a MacBook Air or iMac 24, but possibly in a big screen iMac …

      • 24" iMac is intended for consumer market but they surely need something more powerful for their prosumer line to differentiate.
They will likely release a more powerful version of the M1 (M1X or M2) for the 16" MBP and 27" or 30" iMac, but things may be complicated with the current global chip shortage.

      • -2

M1X. They do it with iphone cpus as well every year.

      • We’ll see in two weeks time. I’d take a 16 inch MacBook Pro with an M1 but I have a feeling it will be an improved version (M1x) or maybe even next gen M2. And btw M1 has been around for a while

  • -2

8 core GPU version for under 1200 and i'll bite

    • ya might be waiting a while, considering its apple we are talking about

      • Nah, with Officeworks price beat and cashback offers it is a very achievable price, just gotta wait. I think best price i've seen someone get was around $1250 for the base model.

        • You don't get 8 core GPU in the base model, the 8 GPU model starts at $1849 retail, at $1200 that's a 35% discount, even apple retail employees don't get that big a staff discount.
$1200 for the 7 core base model may be achievable if you stack discounted GC with price beat/sale/cash back etc. but I don't believe it is achievable for the 8 core model, unless you buy second hand in a year or two.

  • +1

The next one is going to be much better, but will this drop further after it comes out?

    • +3

I doubt it will be much better. The M1 was a massive jump to make people stand up and take notice and poo on Intel. Now they have everyone’s attention they will trickle feed improvements.. which let’s face it, is smart business.

      • +2

Eh I imagine they've kept something good back for the bigger Macbook Pro. Going to be a hard sell on the very expensive MBP if it doesn't have a lot more performance than the Air at half the price otherwise.

        • The new MBPs will have the M1X chip - already been leaked

      • +1

That's just a consequence of switching platforms. That's like saying Sony blew everyone away with the PS4, but improved only marginally for the Pro.

      • Apple isn't Intel when it comes to their hardware, they don't usually give you a single digit % boost when you upgrade. https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphone-12-benchmarks-this-des…

      • its not going to be significantly better internally, but externally it will be

        • What do you mean?

          • @pizzaguy: better scrren, bigger maybe, thinner, new design, white bezel like imac, etc.

  • M1 air or this for web browsing and YouTube?

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-laptop/s…

    • +10

M1 Air, for the easy OS, built quality, CPU, GPU, monitor specs, battery life and price.

Dell if your web-browsing and YT sessions require Windows and an extra USB-C port.

      • Why not Lenovo

        • Any model in particular to match Air or that Dell?

    • +4

M1 if you are okay with MacOS

    • +1

M1 - mainly because of the battery. If you are only looking at browsing and YouTube, you may just want to consider like an iPad air and save yourself a lot of coin.

    • +2

iPad if it’s for browsing and YouTube.
M1 Air if you must get a laptop.

    • Anything built in the last 5 years would be fine for web browsing and YouTube, even a raspberry pi is overkill for web browsing and YouTube.

  • I knew this would happen. I literally bought one yesterday for RRP at Apple. I’ll assume the answer is a big fat man NO! But does anyone know if Apple would refund the difference? Am I able to return my MacBook? I thought I heard them mention a 14 day change of mind policy. Any help would be appreciated.

    • They will actually refund the price difference with Officeworks.

      • Sorry, just to be clear. You’re saying the Apple store will refund the difference?

        • +7

Yes. You also have a 14 day refund policy. Even if you’ve opened it. But they will certainly refund the difference.

          • @Rimzi: Awesome. Thanks. I’ll report back later today.

            • @[Deactivated]: what happened with it?

              • @YahooChess: Going in today. Update in a couple of hours.

                • @[Deactivated]: howd it go

                  • +2

@Slidingrb26: Perfect. A nice guy sorted it all out for me. Didn’t have to give the laptop back just refunded the original price and then charged me a new price with the discount. In and out in about 10 minutes.

    • +16

Hand in your ozbargain license, we don’t buy things at retail here

      • +1

Yep I felt the same way. Don’t usually cave but I did

      • Just for the record. I redeemed myself. I managed to get the 10% off. License hopefully reinstated;)

    • +1

You should be able to return within 14 days. I guess that’s why they have the “refurbished” ones for sale.

      • Good point. I’ll give them a buzz tomorrow and see what the say I guess cheers.

    • +1

Yes they will refund the difference if you find the right person to speak to.
I believe they do it upon meeting all 3 conditions
      i) sale is at an authorised retailer
ii) price difference is less than or equal to 10% off the RRP
iii) within 14 days of purchase

      • I called up today and they said I needed to rerun it and rebuy it for 10% off which is a pain. I’ll go in store tomorrow and see what can be done.

        • +1

Go into store and ask for the manager, if they refuse, you can return it on the spot.
You can even go and get a new one first then go back to the Apple store to ask them to transfer the data for you before returning it.

          • @deliriouss: Good idea. Thanks.

    • +1

Apple has a very flexible 14 days no questions asked return policy as long as the product isn’t damaged. You’ll be fine :)

      • +1

Yep may have to do it that way. Bit of a pain but I need to redeem myself and regain my OzB license.

        • Update. Mission success. Really nice guy at Apple took care of it all. Kept the same macbook but got the 10% off.

  • Similar price (~$2 difference) at Wireless One on eBay with PLUSES10 code. Weren’t these priced at $1,599 last months still? Quite a price drop.

    • that was the rrp before apple dropped it $100 to $1499. Then we have had a couple of good deals such as this one.

  • +1

New ipad pro is attractive but expensive than macbook

    • Yes it’s an interesting new product line, with all these M1 devices. Previously (quite a few years ago I must say), your base MacBook or iMac was non-retina and you’d have to pay a lot for a decent screen vs an iPad but now it’s almost the other way around.

      • +2

The iPad pro still has a better screen with the Micro LEDS and ridiculous brightness I guess.

But it doesn't run 'real' apps so..

        • I didn’t even realise that about the even better screen. I was in the market for a new MacBook a few years ago. I liked the Air (cheapest) because of its form factor but it wasn’t powerful enough. So I looked at the non-retina MacBook Pro, but being so used to a retina iPhone and iPad by then, the screen wasn’t what I wanted. That left the retina MacBook Pro, which was way too expensive. Now even the base model MacBook Air meets my needs at almost half the price of that MacBook Pro from years ago.

        • exactly, iPad cannot function effectively as a laptop replacement until they put MacOS on it and weight of iPad Pro and Magic keyboard combined is heavier than MBA.

          • +1

@deliriouss: Or fix the ipadOS limitations that hold the iPad back. Decent file system, multiuser, improve multitasking, windowing etc. etc.
That said, my 10.5 IPP has become my main away from work computer.
Never bought a keyboard for it though. If I wanted a keyboard I would just get a laptop.

            • @entropysbane: my iPad has turned into a sidecar monitor and a drawing tablet for illustrator & photoshop, neither of which I need that often. The ipadOS limitations you mentioned are exactly the problems I encountered, I simply couldn't get it to fit into my workflow.

      • I'm glad MacBook Air Performa never got badged. lol

  • price of MBA, MBP will be dropping dramatically as new design, way more powerful and mini LED display MBA, MBP are coming soon.

    • +4

More likely the newer, better models will just be priced higher and they'll continue selling these as a lower tier option at similar to current price or only a small price drop.

    • How soon?

      • +1

I would be surprised if there was a new MBA or base MBP13 before October.
There could be a new further up the range model MBP or larger iMac announced in three weeks at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference, no one knows anything about their potential performance, but it would be reasonable to expect a higher performance variant of the M1, or some other, unannounced chip. The Mac Pro will probably be the last to change from intel to the M series chips, maybe next year.

Pre announcement the rumours are these higher spec models of MBP will raise your children as super cool savants and make you a total chick magnet too, the moment you hand over the credit card.
On launch of course, it will be missing some rumoured, unique and esoteric but world changing feature the Macheads were salivating over on Mac rumour websites, to much wailing and nashing of teeth after the keynote. On line arguments erupt over the reason this unannounced feature was not included, apart from the obvious one it never existed in the first place.
Online wars also erupt between macheads and AMD fans as to whether the new laptop M series SOC competes with the highest spec threadripper. Ditto the GPU component with the AMD fans, although in the case of the GPU, the battle is three way with NVIDIA using gamers. Intel will put out an ad comparing the base model MBP with a desktop using their highest spec i9, but no one cares.
Regardless, the hour prior to the new machines being listed for sale these same macheads will refresh the Apple Store every five seconds to get one as soon as possible and avoid the inevitable waiting list.
It’s a lot of fun really.

        • Actually quite sad reading this, some did happened and I believe will continue to be…

So what it is fast and furious, with brilliant display and exciting sound? Why not marvel at how fast your kids learn a new language? When was the last time you look at a flower on the ground and see with your eyes how much details were in it (even before putting it under a microscope)? Did you hear the canary outside singing a wonderful song this morning? We live in such a wonderful and beautiful world and yet didn't fully enjoy or appreciate it, but glued our eyes on and marvel at how good a laptop is…
