      • Yes, watercooling is a bit harder, but not too hard. Mounting is a case of getting the right thread screw and cutting to the right length! Fan mounting top or rear depends on what you bought but remember, warranty aside this is doable and cheaper than buying the often overpriced ebay'ed dell/tower cooler the K variants came with and is shown in the promo photos. You can mount water cooling but yes, its a case of open first, measure twice and ordering accordingly!

The dell tear downs and GPU thermals are doable by anyone with no regard to warranty and a colonial, can do spirit, its not at all hard! It does make a BIG difference but if its not for you, then live with it as is or better, dont buy it as the warning are true, out of the box this is a disappointment, even with discounts and deals!

I don't mean to be rude, and I appreciate you trying to help out, but your advice isn't great overall.

You need to attach the cooler over the GPU. You're limited in what you can use. Normally the water block mounts over the CPU and is attached to the back of the motherboard generally with a plate. In this case, the HSF is attached directly to the case meaning there's no room for other mounting solutions. This means you are limited in what you can attach short of modding the case.

          • @ihfree: Ive watched others do it on youtube (water cooling) so its doable but as I dont have a dell my info is based on others experimentation

I have mod pc's for years, id happily give it a go myself and id read this thread and then google youtube how-to's and reviewers who went on to mod and correct these shortfalls.

Or live with it, or avoid a dell…

        • OR BUY THIS, Dell XPS 8940 Desktop 11th Gen Intel Core i7-11700K RTX 3070 16GB RAM 1TB SSD
20% off* with code PNVDG20. $2139 ~ WHY YOU ASK, Well it has the K skew of the 11th gen and so get the TOWER COOLER!
It also gets a better WIFI/BT and also a 2TB HD which more than makes up for the increase in price IMO and you know the cooler is better and works!

Yes its $139 more but you get the better cooler better WIFI/BT & bonus 2tb HD, the alternative is to buy and mod/screws the Noctura NH-U9S $119, so either/or….

          or the Noctua NH-D9L $79/89

      • One point on RAM, were about to move from DDR4 to DDR5, so if for a time prices drop and used prices crash, LOAD UP! Yep, 128gb suckers!!!!

NOTE: Change bios from RAID to ACHI unless you know you need RAID.
      @partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/ahci-vs-raid.html

      • This uses a NVME ssd, AHCI is only relevant for SATA.

        • Mmmmm. Yes your right
          https://www.anandtech.com/show/7843/testing-sata-express-wit…
It will still work, but might be a small speed penalty over RAID with NVME. Hmm, new one on me, my bad!

I do know, you cant change this on the current install, ONLY on a new install of an OS and on boot for bios the first time. If you do change it on the curent install it will fail to boot, weird things or nothing happens but alls not LOST, just change it back in the BIOS!

alas, cant edit that, so I hope anyone undertaking this reads all the comments, updates and corrections!

    • Watercooling the CPU is probably overkill. The Noctura NH-U9S fan is good replacement for the garbage CPU cooler

Dell are scammers with the sneaky subscription they added to the order as mentioned by GN. Avoid.

    • +3

They never did this in Australia.

      • Dell support and sales are actually decent in Australia.
It's pretty bad in North America based off GN and LTT experiences

        • +4

We can thank our relatively strong consumer protection laws for that, not Dell!

    • +1

You should not take GN’s vids that seriously and out of context. common sense goes a long way.

  • I want one of these to be good because it seems to be the only way to get a decent full priced rig with a high end GPU these days :(

  • +3

Love how quickly this desktop changed from an ozbargain favourite to absolute garbage.
A lot of the issues were discussed numerous times in previous deals - propriety components, inadequate CPU cooling - but nobody negged until the Gamers Nexus video

  • +1

RTX 3070 alone cost $1999 ATM, worth it if you need a decent pc for the price

  • +2

Come here for the bargains, stay for the Dell threads.

Tough crowd today, I have a couple of these (bought when they were $1800 and again the other day @ $2,200 less 10% CR) and they are great machines. I have installed an additional fan in one of them and the other is running stock - I also have the 8940 variant and I'd say this case is marginally better, they (the 8940 and G series) are fine for 99% of people and great value around the $2k mark if you want a 3070 GPU in the current market. The only bloat I removed was the Mcaffee virus scanner (1.04gb), takes about 30 seconds to remove, then a quick reboot and its gone. Not the best PC, not the coolest (temp) but for $2k, gets the job done and is excellent value for money in the current hardware climate.

    • Typical lynch mob mentality. I wouldn't buy this PC as I've always custom built mine for maximum longevity but I can see the appeal to the non-technical person.

    • Mirroring this. Have been running some non-stop since purchase w no-issues and the config dells shipping a lot better than what GN used for his video

    • +1

because they see a video and follow the mob

    • Which model 3070 does it come with? Is it a pretty basic Dell model or do they use something else for the 3070 spec model

      • +1

        OEM (foxxcon most likely)

      • It's a Dell OEM 3070. Two fans, non-blower type with a single 8-pin power connector.

        • +3

They’re great. I have quite a few different 3070s and my Dells are easily the favourites. Very quiet and very cool.

  • Pretty good price. You can remove the card and sell it separately, and then sell the system for a profit. The card by itself should fetch $1600 or so (try Gumtree or FB market to avoid eBay fees), and then if you sell the system for $800 you're making $400 profit. Already there's someone on eBay selling one minus card!

    • -2

how about you invest with your cash before you give this advice ? Someone might lost their hard earn cash due to EIP1599, or stuck with this machine that they dnt need but cannot sell

  • Just a heads up.

I bought one of these Dell G5, i7-10700F, 1TB NVME and 16gb of RAM on eBay for $720 without a video card. eBay is full of deals of GPU less Dells going cheap.

I don’t game, I put in a GT1030 silent I had lying around and this PC is an epic office machine!

I tested for overheating and pegged the CPU at 100% for ten minutes and it never got above 70-80 Celsius. That’s OK and I never run the PC that hard anyway. It generally runs cool and quiet.

Plus a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler is only $32 and it fits, may do that later for giggles.

So if you are after an Office or productivity machine, these rock, really cheap, compact, quiet and powerful.

    • Did you pay $720 via auction? The cheapest on eBay right now are going for $900 Buy-it-now.

      • Buy it now.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-G5-i7-10700F-16GB-RAM-1TB-N…?

It was $770 and there was a $50 eBay coupon, remarkably it was one of those fabled “eligible items” and a non eBay Plus one at that. Who would of thought?

Seriously, you just need to keep watching, people are buying 10 Dells at a time to get the video cards and dumping the PC on eBay. Some are trying to get premium prices but are “dreaming” in this market. It changes day by day.

Finally, many have a “Or best offer”, some of the sellers may be somewhat distressed at the moment, too much stock.
