I regret buying this machine. Almost 1year on and non stop issues. Dell support processes are the biggest disappointment I had. They know the issues everyone is having yet they refuse to recall a product known as faulty. It shouldn't have left the factory. Do your research and even check dells forums. DO NOT BUY.

What sort of issues did you face?

Just look at the 13/6/20 post of this dell laptop. Scroll down to the bottom of the comments. Most people went straight for the refund. I was too slow and got stuck with dells useless support. Blue screen crashing every 10 mins. Then wouldn't even power on until battery fully depleted. Screen sh1t, power brick is size of actual brick, case is flimsy sh1t, thermals are sh1t and the sh1ttiest of all is the dell support system. Absolutely garbage. I paid 2k for a hp spectre 13 and couldn't believe how much happier I am. I will never support dell ever again after selling me a broken item they KNOW was not ready for market. 1300 bucks down the drain. I'm pretty cluey with computers so I know my stuff. Just for reference

Demand a refund since their support was unable to fix the issue.

Bring out the old "not fit for purpose" bat and Australian consumer law.

          • @AEKaBeer: My time is worth more than the 1300 bucks. Sorry just a cost to benefit situation but thank you anyway for the pathway suggestion

            • @[Deactivated]: Isn't Australia consumer law involve in this? like I am pretty sure if the product is brick and the company refuse to refund you. You can contact the gov to help you solve this

What sort of problems have you experienced?

Is it just this particular model by Dell.. or more widespread across their laptop range?

      • +1

Look above. Wasn't consumer ready. It shouldn't have left the factory. I bet they risked it and tried to solve issues with updates. They couldn't.

      • Specifically with this unit, a Reddit post from this user sums up the number of issues that one can experience after buying new in box -

        https://www.reddit.com/user/sirsquishy67/comments/m2hs1p/g5_…

Recently looks like there is an issue with the current bios version too

        https://www.reddit.com/r/DellG5SE/comments/nl3mpl/comment/h0…

This particular user has spent more time than most with Dell support trying to get it to a semi workable state

Personally I wanted to like the laptop and it was okay after limiting the CPU turbo and updating the bios but the yellow screen on corners was just too much to handle.

Specs seem decent but with a 250 nit screen i would hope it lives in a basement

    • +3

Screen is garbage can confirm. Useless when it blue screens every 10 mins straight from the factory also

      • Is it at least an accurate shade of blue?

Get the Legion 5 4800h instead. I haven’t had any issues with mine so far. I considered the Dell initially but avoided it based on all the thermal problems.

    • +1

Just got my dad this, how do you rate it?

      • If you mean the Legion 5 I love it. It has no thermal issues runs cool and quiet (I’m an engineer don’t use it for gaming). If you want one for gaming get the Legion 5 with the 1660ti. The battery life is about 5-6 hours of heavy non gaming use which is crazy for a laptop if this spec. I was excited when Dell launched its variant with a 4800h but its been riddled with problems. I would get the Legion. The newer Legions are out but are too expensive at the moment and don’t justify the premium over the 4xxx series.

Thanks for the review, I got him one with the 4800 and 1650ti. The most intense thing he will probably use it for is excel and flight simulator so it's probably overkill but should last a fair while.

          • @Sanny: Good choice! I have the same one, with the 1650ti and the 100% sRGB screen.

            • @bindok: How do you find the screen? Previous comments here inform it's quite flimsy.

              • +1

@Entheogen: Seems fine to me. There’s a bit of flex but nothing major. Not as well built as my Air M1 but doesn’t feel plasticky.

Bought this bad boy to play games at work when it was $1,500 and absolutely love it. Had no issues with it after almost a year.

    • One of the lucky ones without the issues. You are in the 10 percentile. Thanks for your input none the less.

    • +1

I'm glad you don't have issues that's awesome to hear.

Bought one and returned it within the 30 day window. The 144hz 300nits screen was okay but the warping of the LCD due to the way it's taped down to the frame (yellowing on all corners which gets worse over time) and the thermal issues were enough to buy a hp omen instead.

Thermal issues have been somewhat fixed according to others with bios updates.

    • +2

Shouldn't have left the factory. Agreed with above. Lots of these issues Shouldn't have passed the QA testing pre-sales.

Finally got my refund through on one of these. Dont waste your time.

    • I wish my bro. I missed the boat and dealing with Dell service was extremely excruciating. I didn't bother In the end. They were so useless and wouldn't listen or care.
