Hasn't been this cheap for quite some time, and now is down to $337.
I think it is one of Ozbargain's fav chromebook, so no need to post all specs again, but there are extra perks worth mentioning (e.g. "Get Google One with 100 GB of storage" looks good after recent changes to Google Photos)

UPDATE: OOS at Amazon, but same price $337 at Bing Lee for next 19 days: https://www.binglee.com.au/lenovo-za6f0017au-ideapad-duet-ch… — use it to pricematch
* at Officeworks: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-ide… (price is still $395)
* at JB Hi-Fi: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-duet-chromebook-12… (price is $499)

UPDATE 21 June: it's now part of Amazon Prime Day, and price went down to $299. Amazon's Customer support is absolutely amazing — contacted them and got $38 refund.

    Same price at Bing Lee.

    • +1

ah, that explains Amazon's price then!
time to price match at OW and JB who still have it at $395 and $499

      • Please do let us know if you were able to price match at JB or OW.

  • +4

ohhhft i hear this is a legendary chromebook, especially at this price

    • -1

      It's alright, I wouldn't say it's legendary though.

    • Interesting review of Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3.

Bottom line is understand what you are buying. It is not a gaming powerhouse, but I find it great for web browsing, youtube and video conferencing.

  • Hows this compare to entry level ipad

    • what tasks?

      • Specifically team viewer, but happy to try google remote desktop instead.

        Email
        Ozbargain
        Netflix
And ideally magic the gathering arena

        • +2

I think you can install Team viewer on ChromeOS, and Netflix, email, ozbargain, or any other app run on browser should be fine.

But I think iPad has better Camera, and Games run better on iPad

          • @esandjay: Are cameras on tablets/iPads worth wasting time with? Handling & the toy lenses are not very practical.
Games on other than console/PC? Better read a book.

        • +5

          iPad wins.

New Duet will be cheaper than new iPad, has a keyboard which is ok, will be lighter than iPad + keyboard case combo, will work better with external monitor, will be Google vs Apple, but for your tasks I would choose iPad.
PS: I have iPad and Samsung Tab, but haven't tried ChromeOS and just want some new experience, so pulled the trigger this time.

          • @olderman: I was also considering tab s7…or ipad pro bit this is getting expensive quick…

          • +2

@olderman: Be aware that the current Duet only supports 1080p at a 30Hz on external monitors, which many monitors won't actually support. (Don't' own Duet). There's actually a logged bug by Robbie @ Chromeunboxed.

            • @Limbot: Thanks for the heads up! I doubt I will ever connect it to external monitor, as it won't be my primary device, but still I didn't know about this limitation, ouch.

            • +1

              @Limbot: Status: WontFix (Closed)
              Sad.

              • @mouski: Think I read the new Asus CM3 Duet competitor has the same issue too because it's based on the same chipset but my GoogleFu is weak tonight…….

    • +1

iPad pro OS is on lower level than Chrome OS which is between desktop (Windows/MacOS) & Tablet (Android/iPadOS).
With the keyboard it converts to full notepad level with many resizeable windows. I attached 4K monitor & it supports it as FHD +the built-in with windows style functionality. I attached Samsung T1 1TB as external drive via 3xUSB3+USB-C + HDMI + [m]SD & it is wonderful. It supports USI pen ~$59 from Lenovo or cheaper elsewhere. So much functionality for $320.
I'm happy to get rid of my wife's painful (to support) iPad2 as chopping board now ;)

  • i feel it is slow….. maybe i installed too many android apps?

  • how to get this "Get Google One with 100 GB of storage" ???
step by step how to register please ?

    • +3
First, make sure all of the following applies to you:
      • You’re on a Chromebook with Chrome OS versions 86 and up.
      • You’ve never redeemed the offer before. You can redeem each offer once per Chromebook, or once per Google Account, depending on the offer.
Next, check which offers you’re eligible for:
Third, check if you’re within the time limits:
      • You must redeem your offers within 180 days after the first account was added to your Chromebook. If you don’t claim the offers within this time limit, they expire.
      • +3

edit. found it. from explorer app. then left side perks
i bought the duet second hand from ebay around $220
got few there. lucky the previous owner didnt redeem some of them wohooooooo including the google one

      • I guess there is no limit to how many perks you apply for. I pay $2.49/mth for 100GB. I hope I will get +100GB after I apply.
        Any traps/warnings?

  • How good would this be as a game streaming client?

    • Better than an iPad.

    • Depends on how well the Android app is supported.

Picked up one in one of the $325 sales last year. I think it would be the perfect portable office machine to take in the go. It feels sturdy and is pretty compact.

My only negatives (which is really a positive) is how locked down it is. Copying files to it is really difficult (I found just using a USB memory stick works best) and installing apk files to it without switching the whole thing to development mode is a bit convoluted using Linux, but unlike an iPad, there is actually ways around it.

Also just to note, the device is 32 bit, so I was really disappointed when I first ran it that and 64-bit only app would just not install at all from the Google Play store (e.g. Genshin Impact). But to my surprise, a new update suddenly had them installing on it, so that has made the device even better for general use. Basically this would be the device I would go travelling with… powerful enough, compact, and the screen is crisp. Just not using it as much due to not travelling…

    • powerful enough to run that genshin impact ???

    • Another issue I’ve found is that the stand is quite flimsy.

    • What resolutions can you get on youtube/netflix ap?

    • I got one from JB cheap last year, on offer with a Lenovo Smart Clock (rubbish… flogged it off on eBay the next day).

It could have been a great device at that price, and I really wanted to like it, but it just fell short on so many fronts. Agreed on software support, but I think that's just a limitation of ChromeOS in general.

While it does have USB-C and can connect to a display, the resolution is capped due to a hardware limitation, making it unusable as an occasional work device.

  • 8 years worth of Chrome OS updates, which are released every 6 weeks, just fyi :)

Handy to use in place of an Android tablet, and being able to switch users is good! Can have the kids and adult logins on there without issue

    • You can switch users on a tablet.

  • -1

I think it is one of Ozbargain's fav chromebook

Really? What are the other models in contention?

    • +1

      Lenovo Flex 5

    • +1

Really what? "I think" or "one of" or "fav chromebook"?
As for contenders — there is a "Search" field in top right corner, just type "Chromebook", then press enter, and you'll get plenty of other options.

  • It's a great buy and great Chromebook.
    But now one year old.
    What's the competition?

  • -1

Hasn't this been on sale for 299 in jbhifi?

  • 2021 chromebooks coming now blow these ones out of the water for performance. Unlikely $300 though

    • +1

But do they offer the tablet with detachable keyboard form factor?

    • Is performance a big issue for many people?

On paper specs, it lacks the grunt of my phone or desktop, but never feels slow.

  • This or S6 lite? For web browsing, streaming and reading novels?

    • +1

I had both. They are very similar in performance and feel.

If you need the keyboard, better get this, as with S6 Lite you will need to buy one separately.

If you need a stylus over the keyboard, get S6 Lite.

      • Is there any DLNA client for ChromeOS? I have a server with ahem linux ISOs and streaming is something i need to do. I cant find much online.

        • +1

You can use an Android or Linux client on the Duet.

    • If you need to connect to work accounts, then ChromeOS can be better as my experience is that it doesn't require a work profile to be installed for access.

      • Oh, that's interesting. I have to use MDM on both iOS and Android devices. When you say work accounts won't need profile installed on device is it about companies using Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace? If O365, is it because you just access mailbox via Chrome, or you can actually use some Google Play apps to work with your company mailbox?

        • +1

What I've found is that on ChromeOS you can use the browser apps, whereas on Android I've found that it forces a redirect to the Google Play Apps.
Note that this is only my experience and since it just works for me, I haven't looked into it further.

  • Can i claim this in tax return?

    • Depends on what you do. And as over $300 would need to depreciate it.

  • Think the ports listed are for another laptop:

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/lenovo/chromebooks/Leno…

Does it have a MicroSD port?

    • +1

      No, it doesn't.
It is the same chromebook on Amazon and on Lenovo website. Sadly enough it really has only one USB-C port, doesn't even have a headphone jack :)

      • +1

That is the biggest oversite. Must have microsd port at the very least.

  • +1

Been using it for a couple of months.
Well worth the price for any portable use. The fact that it includes a keyboard makes it a bargain. Good for typing documents on the go.

  • +1

Thanks op, been waiting for this.

    • me too, me too :)

  • This Chromebook is great value! Must buy if you just want it for emails, streaming, messaging etc.

  • Can anyone let me know if this is capable of streaming netflix in 1080p?

    • Yes. You need to use Chrome though, as the app will only do SD.
That said, does it really matter on a 10" screen? SD still looks way better than the old days of analogue TV and VHS.,

      • Cool thanks. I'm coming from a 12.9" ipad. Not sure what 10" would feel like…

      • Analogue was SD (PAL), but agree it would look a bit better. I can clearly tell the difference between the app and via the browser though. HD looks much better on the screen.

        • +1

DVD was SD, but far better than analogue TV. A bigger leap than HD IMHO. (Assuming you were watching progressive on a good widescreen TV, preferably plasma/lcd. )
I did a few tests and found nobody could tell the difference between 720p and 1080p for movies. Channel 7 was using 576p digital on their HD channel for a while, and people were still impressed. 4K is a joke, like 3D and curved screens :-) (With some exceptions, of course.) If a 4K stream looks better, it is the higher bitrate.

  • -3

    It's just a rubbish
    -slow
-Every week its installing some chrome os updates
-twice erased all data during the update
-can't install apk without development mode (and it's not so easy to unlock it)
-files transfer is a nightmare - no card reader at all (UBS C is only one phisical port)
-first few months half of the installed apps didn't work because of "no internet connection" despite the internet was connected and works fine through the browser (for example YouTube).
-first Lenovo was defective and one of the speakers didn't work.

    Can't see any positive point

    • And yet, it is Ozbargain's favourite Chromebook. Weird, eh?

    • What would you consider a good alternative, and what price would that be?

      • Depends on your needs

        For the same price
Lenovo Tab M10 64Gb 10" or Samsung a7 if its only for browsing/watching

        With phisical keyboard
ASUS L210/win os. Just received this last week from Amazon us

    • How to

can't install apk without development mode (and it's not so easy to unlock it)

      Please?

      • You can install what ever you have in the Google Play market

If you'd like to install just apk you can't do it without developer mode
This is step by step guide.
        https://beebom.com/how-sideload-android-apps-chromebook/
It took me about one hour to install apk. Once you reset the tablet you need do the same again

  • OOS now

  • Quite happy with my Duet. It's a good secondary device, ideal for a commute or weekend away. Battery life is very decent and Chrome OS is not too bad.

Just don't expect a snappy UX experience, it can be sluggish at times. It is also quite heavy for its size.

  • Currently unavailable

  • Got one for mum last time they were this cheap. Great little thing for that price that replaced her laptop and tablet. Now the wife wants one too, doesn't need it, just wants it!

  • Very portable and great battery life. I use it for my study on the go. There are obviously limitations but you can't beat it at this price range.

    • That is so true even with tablets the good keyboards are $100+, having the best of both words tablet and proper desktop OS is fantastic , linux terminal etc

  • Too late to party, want to know of this supports stylus? Might pull trigger next time

    • +1

      Yes is USI pen compatible

      • Legend. Thank you

  • +5

Priced matched in officeworks for 320.15$ using the binglee website.

    • Legend, will call them tomorrow mrng. Hope they don't update price till then

      • Officeworks price now reduced to $337, so no more 5% price beat discount. Went there this afternoon to try to get the price beat, but they'd dropped it to match Bing Lee already

  • For reference, I have one of these and the new iPad pro 12'9 with m keyboard.

This Chromebook duet is of incredible, immense value. It cannot compare to flagship devices in terms of speed, in fact it's downright sluggish, but once whatever app is loaded, it works just fine. There is also a keyboard & trackpad that works great.

The whole thing with the case/kb is a bit heavy but the battery life is just outstanding and unexpected, it lasts and lasts. When we play 1080p content, it looks & sounds excellent for that size and the amount we paid.

Plus at this price point, we don't have to worry about it getting scratched, dirty, stolen, etc.

    • +1

For reference, I have one of these and the new iPad pro 12'9 with m keyboard.

I have the same and got to say, this little Duet holds it's own.
The synchronisation with Chrome works great, especially as I use an Android phone (auto unlock etc).

The iPad 12.9 with magic keyboard is beautiful, but in my hands is a superb device looking for a use.
I still turn to my MacBook Pro for any "real" work. And it feels too heavy to carry around when in the magic keyboard case.

Duet is small and chuckable. Screen is great though a little small for my eyes. Keyboard also small but usable for short bursts. I use it more for the function keys eg. Brightness and volume, ESC etc. and short filling out of details on web forms.

Performance of Duet is fine for what I use it for. Lots of Chrome tabs. Google docs. VLC for videos. YouTube.
      Love it.

  • Anyone has same experience where plex for android (client) doesn't load on this duet? I can access the server side using chrome.

  • Price match to Bing lee $337 from Good guys and get a $40 store voucher

    • How did you get the $40 voucher from GG?

Ordered from Amazon at 11pm last night and received by midday today! It's not within 2 hours like the USA, but pretty good in my books.

Product itself seems pretty good so far.

Any tips or tricks for a 1st time chromebook owner that people would like to share before I google it? 😂

  • Can we get Officeworks to price beat Amazon Prime deal?

    • try and let us know
      thanks

    • Officworks price has been dropped to match Amazon at $299 - great buy!

  • UPDATE 21 June: it's now part of Amazon Prime Day, and price went down to $299. Amazon's Customer support is absolutely amazing — contacted them and got $38 refund.

I just got rejected via chat when asking for a $38 refund…how did you get yours?!

    • +1

Ugh, bummer, did you get your Duet recently?
I told them I just bought mine less than 2 weeks ago and found out that Prime Day deal price is now less than what I paid, and my purchase is still eligible for a free return, but I really don't want to use this option. I stopped here, said nothing about refund. I then got a response that normally they ask to return purchases for a full refund as a standard policy, but as my purchase was made recently they will issue a refund instead. End of the story (+ me saying thanks obviously).

I'm sure they save all chats history, but maybe try again with another support agent without asking for a refund explicitly. Hopefully it'll work this time. Refund should be so much easier and cheaper even for Amazon than dealing with returns and losing the loyalty of customers, I can't even imagine why they refused to give you a refund.

      • I bought on Friday. Tried two agents and gave up…luck of the draw I guess.
