Surely you would be better to just get a 5950x ?

Depends if you need the extra PCIe lanes / Workstation features

This, this is definitely a big upside of the TR platform. Most people won't need the lanes. Freaky people like me do.

        •

Just curious, what are you doing to use all of those pcie lanes?

I got this instead of a rtx3080. The extra power should be enough to emulate a rtx3070 which is enough for my 720p monitor.

      •

Not even nearly enough to emulate 3080

    •

You would be using this CPU with a WRX80 motherboard, which support up to 128 pcie lanes and up to 2tb of RAM. 5950x can't do that unfortunately.

  •

Given its above AU$1000 and coming from overseas, dont you pay duty too?

    •

Looks like they include GST etc

      •

You might get hit extra because it's $1000+. $1000+ you pay more than just GST.

Pretty sure GST applies for imports less than $1000 now as well, except for small sellers under a certain turnover.
The larger overseas stores will apply GST at checkout

      •

Duty and GST are 2 different things. All items above $1000 attract duty on top of GST. Normally an additional 5% but will depend on the catagory. And then fees for paperwork

Can this run my work programs

Discount on the CPU, but pay a lot more for other parts, especially the motherboard and ECC RAM.

    •

Not sure about the pro, but with non-pro threadripper you can use non-ECC RAM. Motherboards are not cheap, but with so many slots and 2x 10GB networking would be very interesting for some, especially when you compare with non pro TR motherboards.
