      saw that. thx guys.

  • Best price currently available for local stock it seems. (Centre Com is second place with $419 + Free Shipping).

You can also get it down to $380.39 if you still haven't used the "$10 off any purchase" offer via the Amazon Mobile app, which is what I've just done.

Purchased this for $429 a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. Just wanted to note that we have a house with an extension in the back, and this Asus router (the AX86U) outperforms in every way the mesh setup we had before purchasing it. We had the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 + Telstra Smart WiFi Booster Gen 2 in the back extension. The Asus router by itself covers the entire house + front garage + back extension better than that combination. On a 250Mbps connection, we get full speed on WiFi on all corners of the house. And given it's a big household with a lot of devices (many of which are running simultaneously), the stability in speeds and latency has been great.

Great to hear. I’ve got a gigabit connection so very interested to see how fast this can go tomorrow

      • +2

Yeah, give us an update. Would be interested to hear how you find it.

PS: As recommended by many on Whirlpool, I installed the latest MERLIN firmware for this router and it performed even better than the stock firmware (for you on a Gigabit connection, the difference might be even bigger). It's as simple as downloading, extracting the zip file, and then uploading the firmware to the router in the settings.

        • Cheers will do

          • +1

@XCOM v2: From the settings, factory reset after the firmware update. Forgot to mention that.

        • +1

Also found Merlin to handle disconnects and reconnects gracefully, ie. it reconnected where as the stock firmware required a hard reset…

      • RT-AX86U is one of the best for Gigabit. Speed graphs

      • +1

I have this router on Merlin firmware and I get every last mbps out of my gigabit connection :)

    • Would love to know what I'm doing wrong because this is the biggest steaming POS for 2.4ghz range. I'm getting 1-2mbps around 10 metres or less away.

  • great to run diversion.ch on for whole house ad blocking too

  • This or the ASUS RT-AX88U from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/630500

The RT-AX88U and RT-AX86U are very similar. Depends on the ports you want.

      RT-AX88U

      Gigabit WAN port x 1.
      Gigabit LAN ports x 8.
      WPA3-Personal.
      Horizontal design.

Mate, kudos to you for patiently answering the same question in every other RT-AX88U / RT-AX-86U thread.

    • For mine, the RT-AX88U if for no other reason than the extra four ports…

      I'm unsure why the 88U is cheaper…

      • Extra 3* ports. One of the 2 WAN ports on the 86U can be used as LAN, for a total of 5.

    • Another nice and detailed comparison of the two: https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-ax88u-vs-rt-ax86u/

  • About to move to a house, from a townhouse. Currently running an Asus RT-AC68U on a 100/40 NBN plan (HFC) with Uniti. Would it be worth upgrading at this point?

Aside from increased coverage, would there be any other real benefit?

    • +2

Really wouldn’t think so. You will hit your 100mbps

    • +1

I'm in more or less the same situation (HFC 100/40 and AC68U).

The other benefit I'd see is hardware encryption for VPN traffic - my 68U gets a bit bogged down sometimes.

In theory, it should handle more concurrent wireless traffic with grace too (MU-MIMO)..
