    I think I just wasted my money on this. Just arrived today, so I pulled out my regular Chromecast and set this up. However when a friend came over to watch Netflix they weren't able to cast Netflix to this… When they did the Chromecast would open the Netflix app on Google TV and ask them to log in…

    How do I cast to this as per a regular Chromecast?? Having to get friends to log in via the apps makes this less useful than just a regular Chromecast!

        Nope, I believe guest mode is no longer an option. Chromecast allows anyone to cast by default. This is what we tried, but it kept prompting to use the actual Google TV app and log in…

        Surely i'd be able to get a refund as it no longer functions as advertised (i.e. a chromecast)

    DO NOT BUY - If you use your chromecast as a chromecast (i.e friends and family come over and cast from their phones/accounts to your TV).

    This thing will force your guests to log into the in-built apps on Google TV using the remote, making it FAR FAR less convenient than previous regular chromecast's. Apparently there's no fix for this issue so i'm returning mine and going back to the old Chromecast.

      It is probably designed as a "home media player" rather than a "casting" device - which makes sense, otherwise it wouldn't come with a remote control.

      I doubt your unique use case is common at all —-> i.e. having friends and family come over and cast using their phones/accounts to your TV I mean.

      Most friends and family will likely just grab the remote and start using the Google TV as a "media player" - same way they would grab your TV remote to watch sport on your TV, or grab your bluray/dvd player remote to watch a movie on disc, etc.

      The key difference is that the regular chromecast is purely designed as a "casting" device with no UI and no apps and no remote control. Whereas this one has a UI and a remote control, so I would liken it to a "home media player" rather than a pure "casting" device.

      From a marketing perspective, they should have just called this thing a "Google TV" and list in the specs that it has chromecast functionality, rather than calling it a "Chromecast with Google TV".

        Yep, I totally agree. There was absolutely no way for me to know that this thing doesn't actually "cast" as per previous Chromecast until I bought it and tried it. It's not mentioned anywhere.

        Should just be called "Google TV" 100 percent. Or maybe "Google TV with Chromecast lite" lol.

        I only watch Netflix/subscription services when friends and family are over, so they simply cast from their device to mine to watch and works flawlessly. I got this thinking it would still function in the same way but give them a remote to use once they'd begun casting making it a little more convenient (and make it easier for me to just watch YouTube). However the way this functions for me is FAR less convenient as it doesn't actually "cast" as per a chromecast.

        Oddly someone said they probably did this to prevent sharing accounts etc. However with this it actually promotes it! If a friend logs in to use it then they remain logged in even when they aren't here and I can use their account as opposed to them needing to be here to cast as per the old chromecast lol.

        Either way, if it has a Chromecast feature built in, that's what it should do, not redirect you to an app. At the very least be a configurable option.

          Not trying to defend Google here - but they can easily argue that it actually DOES do chromecasting.

          Though the Chromecast "feature" is not exactly the same on this device compared to the older device with no UI and apps.

          Sounds to me like it is a design decision rather than a defect —> i.e. they deliberately made it so that you can only "cast" to it if your account is logged into the app as well, although it sounds like the implementation has been pretty terrible from a security and privacy perspective.

          I am not 100% sure of this - but I think every other Android TV device also functions similarly - where you can only cast to it if you are logged into the same account on the phone and on the Android TV app.

          Hence I think the marketing of this device is wrong. It is more of an "Android TV" device than it is a "Chromecast" device.

          In fact, most Android TV devices have already been updated to the new "Google TV" UI as well.

        If I go to my parents or girlfriends house I regularly cast content to their TVs (the YouTube app usually) because it's easier to find the content on my phone.

        Was about to buy this to give my gfs tv the functionality of a Chromecast, plus allow her to use the smart tv functions.

        However as other comments have pointed out, this is more of a Google tv with "Chromecast lite".

        I'll hold off my purchase for now

          I have an nvidia shield with the latest google tv interface.

          My wife is able to cast youtube from her iphone to it and her google account is not logged into the shield.
          Unsure about netflix and other services as we only have the one account.

          Have had a friend test it out on his mother in laws iphone with his chromecast device and youtube also works without her being logged into the chromecast.

          Seems this isnt a youtube casting issue but may be an issue with premium streaming services.

            @El Chyeah: Yep I belive that's a YouTube smart tv app casting feature.

            Tv or smart device needs the YouTube app, and you need to use the YouTube app on your phone.

            Chromecast on the other hand is casting any compatible website or app to the tv without the corresponding app installed on the TV

As I mentioned, my friend tested it on his chromecast with google tv and had no issue casting youtube (Sorry If i was unclear when i said "his chromecast device", his device is the "chromecast with google tv").

                Yep YouTube is my main use scenario, and for that I wouldn't need to buy any device at all (the smart tv YouTube app works fine).

                What I want is to be able to do is cast other apps to the tv from my phone like a normal Chromecast

                  @cheesecactus: Same here, youtube is my main use for myself while home alone. But when friends and family are over we use their subscription accounts and watch movies/TV together. So really this thing is useless for such a use case.

                  The original Chromecast is far more flexible so I'd advise against buying this if you regularly have friends and family over who want to stream from their accounts.

      sounds like you're doing it wrong, did you tick allow others to cast etc?
      half the time doesn't work with iphones anyway if on the same wifi network..
      it's great but have really only put it through it's paces with one user.
      Stil, if you claim the netflix credit it only owes you 45$, even 80$ is pretty good.
      no doubt there are more expensive devices but some aren't that popular in AUS

        No I'm doing it correctly, its been confirmed this is how this new Google TV's "Chromecast" feature works, its just not advertised or mentioned ANYWHERE. They've removed the functionality, there is no "Guest" mode with this, so its essentially a "Chromecast lite". Should simply be called Google TV if you ask me.

        Also this doesn't come with the Netflx credit, that's the one direct from Google store which is like $140

          It works just like a normal Chromecast. Everyone needs to be on the same wifi network obviously.
          I've still got the original chromecast but doesn't even work anymore for some reason, not worth bothering with it now.
          May as well return it mate.

            @G-rig: No, it doesn't work like a normal chromecast. That has now been confirmed. Maybe you've forgotten how they've worked previously, but this isn't it. This essentially has no "guest" mode, so doesn't really allow others (guests to your house) to easily connect and use it without using your accounts.

            Next time a friend comes over get them to connect to it and try use their netflix/subscription service and you'll see what I mean. If you dont have guests over and have all the subscription services already then you wont have any issues.

              The original Chromecast idea was so different users could connect and all queue up, say YouTube video clips etc. I remember how they work. Not sure if Netflix was even a thing then or why different people would want to all use at once. 4 people can already sign into different profiles on Netflix, but sounds like your having a massive party or something.

              Mau as well return it, NVIDIA shield or that other one probably does a bit more but more expensive

                @G-rig: Yeah I'd prefer the remote too, which is why I got this assuming it wld made the experience better/easier. Remote +, chromecast, sounds great!

                Just unfortunate they left out the part about it being a reduced chromecast experience, so won't work like an actual Chromecast has previously.

                I don't have massive parties, but I have different friends and family over pretty regularly (as I live alone) so we watch stuff together when they're here. When they're not I'm busy doing other stuff to be watching tv/movies alone. It's a group activity for me, so being able to easily cast from multiple devices/gust users is a must have.

                  @SkMed: Yeah fair enough, I've never used the Chromecast Ultra, perhaps that was more of a Pure Chromecast. Guess multi user would be handy in some households. Could see if support offers any solutions, you'd assume it would Work in the mirroring mode at least. Anyway agree there is room for improvement and updates with them.

                  Ps still wonder why they have that setting 'let other people control my Chromecast' then? From a security point of view I got this off.

                  you could try other apps like localcast?
                  You may have to add people to your home group and use Google Home, but surely they could just ask you to play it from your Netflix etc. .
