That’s 2020. MIC builds came into effect in 2021. You’re also looking at an American report that is served by an entirely different factory.

          • +6

@nxllson: you cant be reviewing the long term quality of a 2021 built car in 2021.

come back in 5years and we will see how its going.

          • @nxllson: MIC?

            • +2

              @capslock janitor: Made in China…

              • @[Deactivated]: I wish I could drive a MIA, but our stupid economic policies are banishing all industries.

                • -1

@VestMogen: sounds like from peoples comments here MIA is the ultimate trash tier

you want an MIC (lets see how this comment ages in 5years but)

For once a "made in China " product exceeds an American product 🙉

From the second link you posted:

In Consumer Reports’ 2021 study, Tesla dropped five spots to 16th place due to reliability problems with the Model S, Model Y, and Model X. The nonprofit research organization noted that Teslas get high scores in owner satisfaction and its road tests, but only the Model 3 received a high enough overall score to be recommended.

The problem with Chinese cars is they aren’t built to last long.

And good, I’d expect to see the best cars in a display room. Just like if I go to a display home, I expect to see quality paint jobs etc. That’s how you get a sale…

        • +1

          100%

        • +1

I'd trust a Chinese built Tesla more than my old South African Mercedes C class which was the worst built vehicle I've encountered.

      • The megacastings increasing used are greatly aiding panel gaps as they give a uniform chassis foundation.

Tesla build quality is fine, critics have to pounce on something, all the competing ICE cars are dinosaurs and the competing EVs are a generation behind in tech.

    • Realistically, what will actually fail and coat you money to repair on this car over say 10 years? Has the drivetrain, electronics etc been shown to fail and cost a lot to repair? (Genuine question). From what I have seen, the panel gap issue is pretty much gone now and loads of cars have ordinary plastics…

    • Having sat and ridden in one of the Model 3s made in Shanghai, it's build quality is very good. Tesla critics will always bring this up but this is no longer the case.

    • +1

Yep, I love the products but their QA is ridiculious. The fact that they drop em off in aus, sell em, then you have to bring them back to fix the pannel gaps is ridiclious

      • Funny you start a sentence with "Yep" as if you're carrying on the sentiments of the previous comments, but you're completely contradicting them.
The comments above yours have stated the panel gaps are no longer an issue.
The cars for the Australian market are manufactured in China which has been widely reported as having far superior QA to what has come out of the US.

        • I have no idea what you are on about

    • -1

You are missing the point of the car if you think panel gaps are the most significant thing about it.

  • +1

No cashback via CR or SB? Not a deal!

  • I hope pricing on Model Y will be good too when it arrives here.

    • I'd be cautious about model Y. Batteries are built into the subframe, which means that its essentially a disposable car. Each to their own though

      • +1

What do you mean by essentially a disposable car?

        • +1

Probably means that they're just too difficult to replace to the point its not feasible.

        • +1

          Can't easily replace the battery

          • +2

@ItsMeAgro: The talk relates to the 4680 Cell Structural Battery. The battery is likely to outlast the car, so the problem will be how to replace the car, not the battery

      • No. That's part of Teslas future plans but not in the MYs which are being built right now. In addition, the battery at that point will have a lifespan of 1.6 million km. And Tesla will still be able to remove the battery cells and recycle them, but we are talking over a decade until that's even necessary, definitely not a concern for someone buying a car today.

  • Seen quite a few reviews about the poor quality controls on YouTube. Misaligned boot/hoods, big gaps in things, plastic coming off easily, etc.

I’m surprised there’s not more discussion everywhere about that, esp for a $60k+ car…

    • +1

Maybe Elon makes those who don't speak favourably of his Tesla disappear….

      • I’ll take that risk. It’s not like commie countries…

        • Hehe we shall miss you sqeek!

          • +1

@scud70: Come get me, Elon. I live at 123 Evergreen tce…

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: Jokes aside I'd Def be interested in seeing some more info and comparisons in terms of build quality and general use… Especially since my next car in the next 3-4 years will be an EV or Hybrid….

              • +2

                @scud70: scud70, meet Toyota. Toyota, meet scud70

                • @MrThing: Yep Kluger n Rav4 hybrids sound great was going through the reviews yesterday … Haven't seen much full EV plans from. Toyota… Still none of the reviews mention much or anything about Tesla in a comparison aside from price when reviewing full EV cars…

                  • +1

@scud70: Toyotas ace up its sleeve re; EV is its R&D into solid state battery tech - which will be a game changer. Still under development but.

The Toyota hybrid platform is well tested, first prius hybrid was released 20 years ago now.

they have it down to a fine art now. I have a rav4 hybrid and get 5.5lt / 100km, which is pretty damn good. Well made toyota quality car - and cost half of what the cheapest Tesla costs

                    • @MrThing: Well if I were in the market right now would definitely have a Rav or Kluger on top of the list…

                    • @MrThing:

                      I have a rav4 hybrid

What year and how much did you pay out of interest?

              • +1

@scud70: Don’t get me wrong, I’m the same (except will be 5+ years), but the long term quality here (to save a quick buck) is questionable.

              • +1

@scud70: Toyota eEV's are soon coming. Hope they have better build quality

                • +1

@shegeloaf: Aside from EV engine/battery reliability the car itself will be the usual Toyota/Japanese standard so can't see that being an issue….

      • +1

you mean you get bashed to death online by tesla fan boiz

        • Elon likes to get his hands dirty from time to time… Loll

    • +4

      When are the videos dated?

    • +3

For some of the early models that was an issue yes, but anything made recently it's not.

  • NSW (starting 1 Sep): $59,473

here we go again.. here my positive vote, I don't even know why..

  • -5

    Also Chinese car? Forgeddaboudit!

    • +2

I thought Elon said the Chinese factory would only ever service China. The US factory builds for the world.

Turns out this was a lie.

      • +4

What when did he say this?

      • +1

I wouldn't trust Elon at all. He has weird mood swings…

    • Your racism stinks and please leave teslas alone, go enjoy your Hyundai i20.

  • +1

This gives hopes to the Y being priced at $68500! (previously forecasted to be $69900)

If so it would quality for NSW incentive which would be amazing news.

    • The standard range Model Y is only 57K in china now.

    • If we can actually get the SR Model Y here though.

      • It's being made for RHD in Hong Kong so chances are good.

        • I was in HK in late 2019 and I swear half the cars on the streets were a Tesla!

  • +3

Was wondering if they were going to drop the price after they effectively removed radar functionality for the future.

    • -2

Yeah no radar = no good.

      • +1

Have you even seen the results of it? It drives just as good, with way less "phantom brakes"

      • Humans don't have radars either, yet some are very good drivers.

    • I didn't know this, why would they do this?

      • To cut costs. Everything’s about money… welcome to OzBargain, kid…

      • +3

They removed the radar to go with a full vision approach towards autonomous driving.

Here's a great video talking about the conflict between the information received from Radar vs the information received from cameras. The essence is, if the 2 conflicts, which information do you accept?

        https://youtu.be/eOL_rCK59ZI?t=28281
The link should be timestamped already, but just in case its 7:51:21

        • +1

Taking out the sales pitch from the video, it sounds like there are issues with radar that they are not able to solve. Hence, the move to video, which they feel they have enough experience with. Seems like a strange thing to do with no increase in processing power(no physical upgrade of internal hardware). I can't even imagine the data that needs to processed on so many cameras in real time to do this.

          • @balu: Thats why they custom made their neural net hardware.

Removing radar solves sensor fusion issues as mentioned above. They have demonstrated that vision alone is more reliable than radar for speed and distance (the main benefits of radar). Radar has issues detecting large stationary objects because they blend into the background and objects moving laterally at speed.

  • Are Aussie delivered model 3's made in China?

    • Yes sir… Well assembled there

So stick to ICE right? That's what you're saying? Fail.

      • -1

        Not at all.

Just a reminder that EV cars are not some uber environmentally friendly option.

        • shhhh… I've been penalty boxed for saying that EV's are not as clean as people think they are…

          • +1

@pegaxs: Actually I think they really clean when it comes to getting tailpipe emissions and sound pollution out of residential areas, power supplied by coal power can always be converted to renewables at a later date. There is no magic bullet, one step at a time.

        • +1

Agree definitely not uber clean, but better for the environment over petrol.

  • Ok i cant afford but im just wondering how much the cost of electricity for every full charged e.g how many times charging per month or quarter

    • +3

Depends on a lot of factors. Say around 1/3 of the cost, but Petrol prices aren’t that stable so YMMV.

      The calculations are quite simple:

      Consumption (Wh/km) faster=higher consumption
      X
      Distance (km)
      X
      Electricity Rate ($.cc/kWh)
      /
      1000 (Wh to kWh)

Electricity cost ranges from Free to $0.52/kWh at Tesla Superchargers

      • +2

For a real-world example, I average ~160 wh/km (can be more or less depending on conditions), maybe 200 km a week, and charge during off-peak at ~14c/kWh. So that's ~$4.48 per week. Plugging in once a week is fine.

  • +4

Maybe when they can charge 80% in 5mins, I might get one.

    • +1

      No you won’t.

      • Cut him some slack he said might - never say never I guess? Lol
