ZTE Axon 20 128GB (Black) $249 (Was $499) + $4.99 Shipping ($0 in-Store / C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

560

Phone is half price, don't have much to say about it besides the fact it has the first widely available under display camera, unfortunately it doesn't take very good photos or videos with that under display camera.

WTH is a unisoc? Are these as bad as Mediatek years ago?

      • +1

Formerly known as Spreadtrum. They've been around for a long, long time.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNISOC

However their chipsets only appear to be used in budget / value oriented devices. You probably won't see them being used very much by major brands like Samsung.

Is this a phone or a tablet. Almost 7inch display.

    • +4

      Phablet

    • +2

7 inch tablets have considerably more screen area thanks to using a wider aspect ratio.

  • +1

watch out this is the 4g version not 5g
    it also uses emmmc

    • +19

Got my vaccine today, so it's going to be on 5g when in my hand, whether it supports it or not.

  • decent beater phone for the price, but wouldn't use it for anything else due to that low-end processor (plus if take selfies).

  • +2

I'm tempted to get this to replace my Redmi note 9 pro.
I don't game play games so only used for browsing, YouTube, and emails, so as long as it's not laggy in browsing.
Eyesight is ageing so a big screen would be great.
    I don't take selfies
Is there any reason not to get it?

    • +8

A very weak processor that likely isn't very future-proof is a pretty good reason not to get this.

Perhaps getting a dedicated tablet would be a good idea?

I got the Oppo A91 the other day but for admittedly more than $75 off this price. I'd say the even slower Helio P70 is seemingly enough for browsing?

I thought below $250 we don't have much choice in terms of speedy local stock options so I gave in to the A91 to save for my next phone.

        • p70 is equiv. to sd665 , or maybe sd660

someone said this unisoc tiger only pars with sd450

          • @dcep: Hmmmm. I was looking at the Antutu benchmark scores and this article:

"In the aspect of the benchmarking, UNISOC T618 follows Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and ranks higher than MediaTek P70 and Snapdragon 660 I."

But I see Notebookcheck incorporates many more benchmarks, which could be useful if manufacturers find ways to "cheat" in some benchmarks (like Realme GT et al).

    • Poco X3 is a much faster phone.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/poco-x3

      Snapdragon 732G
      Octa-core (2x2.3 GHz Kryo 470 Gold & 6x1.8 GHz Kryo 470 Silver)
UFS 2.1 storage (much faster than eMMC)
      Li-Po 5160 mAh, non-removable (20 percent bigger battery)

      Costs around $300.

That said if you need a tablet for web browsing I'd recommend getting an actual tablet. Maybe iPad mini, or Lenovo Pad 11

Poco F3 is the best bang for bucks this year. 420ish
Snapdragon 870, 120hz OLED screen, NFC

      • Thanks all. Will give it a miss

What's wrong with your Redmi Note 9 Pro?
It has pretty good specs especially if you are not gaming.

  • +2

    useless piece of paperweight

  • nah.

I bought a ZTE Axon phone a year or so ago because it was a "bargain". Not this model though.

More problems that it was worth. People couldnt hear me talk on every second or third call, ate through battery even though it had a large one. Felt like it was always overheating.

Decided to stay away from more lesser known brands from that moment. Stick with Xiaomi, Samsung or Motorola.

Just got this phone delivered. My opinion and I own the following phones; (I'm a tech junkie and love collecting them)

    Oppo Find X2 Pro
    Oppo Find X3 Pro
    Poco X3 NFC
    Oppo A91

The ZTE is by far the biggest phone I've used and is not usable with one hand.
This is a 2 handed phone by far.

OLED panel is gorgeous but there is no Widevine L1 support (Only L3) so Netflix and streaming apps will play in SD resolutions.
Youtube is fine, still plays at full HD

I expected it to run like a dog based on CPU but it's actually on par with the Oppo A91 and navigation and web browsing is fine.
Apps load up without issue and at this price point it's a no brainer.

Haven't tried games as I don't game but for general web browsing, media consumption and well phone use it's perfectly fine.
A rip off at $500 RRP but $250 is about right. If it drops to sub $200 I'd say jump on it as Widevine support is the only thing that stops me from liking it.
Still heaps better than the entry level phones around this price range.

Also it's still stuck on Android 10 but security patches are June 2021.
I doubt Android 11 will arrive so take that in stead.
