Certainly you can repurpose a container, but the ice cream tub isn't going to accept many power boards. Other types of containers would work however.
Picked up something similar last week for $12ish at Aldi also. Haven't measured it but. At the time they had around 3 or 4 designs including some that had grooves to hold iPads and iPhones up which has proven to be quite handy.
