Altercation with Security Guard at Supermarket

I went to a supermarket this evening that opened til midnight. I am in the hottest hotspot area for covid. The secuirty guard was perched on a seat as high as a bar stool right next to the sign in pad. Just inches away. I said I cant sign it that close to you, so he got up off the stool in a very aggressive manner and stood right in front of me, again invading my social distance space so I said keep away from me, and he said You have mental problems, stop yelling, you are mental, dont come in here when you should be in a mental hospital. I said I will complain about you. It was very unpleasant when I was just trying to keep social distance space. However something good happened later, I was 7.50 short for my groceries because I brought the wrong card, and the man behind me insisited on paying it. I will be complainig about the security guard, he needs to be trained on social distancing

There might be 3 points :
        1) Conflict with a Security Guard
        2) Forgetting cards or taking 0 cards to try to buy stuffs
        3) The most important : Posting major dramas that aren't on OZB lol .

My biggest concern is, who got the rewards points points from the transaction?

    • -3

I just called the store and found out that the new shift guard is also seated right next to the book, so I pointed out that there has been 486 cases in canterbury bankstown in the last week, and that social distancing needs to be at least a metre. She said further action will be taken in regards to the guard, but I have my doubts

      • +2

        … cases in canterbury bankstown

        This explains everything

  • +10

    least a metre

C'mon Pam. Something is definitely not right with you. You get things wrong but you are blaming others for your mistakes.

    • -3

how is that wrong, do you want someone blowing covid on you? This is Covid basic stuff

      • Talk about Covid basic stuff. What did I just quoted? You still don't see the problem?

        • The problem is the guards are parked right next to the book, like within inches. Close up. Apparently they still are.

          • @screensaver:

            least a metre

            • @DarkOz: Tell them that, dont tell me. They put them there, I didnt

              • +1

                @screensaver:

                least a metre

If you still don't get it, I am going to let someone else to explain it.

You need to let it go. Go to sleep. Don't let this keep you up all night and all morning.

      • You can always blow him back!

    • +9

      Blame shifting.

      9 – ACTING DRAMATICALLY

A narcissistic person might shift blame onto other people by acting overly dramatic and saying things aloud that makes it sound like others are to blame. If others are in the room, they might see the narcissist behaving dramatically and think that there is something terrible going on and that you are to blame.

      Source: https://www.powerofpositivity.com/blame-shifting-to-others-n…

Plenty more examples following a pattern of behaviour.

OP Seeing outcomes in a zero sum game.

Whilst both were poorly behaved (lose lose) imo.

  • +7

Does not appear to be a singular problem as told in the narrative.

    1) Agree security guard’s etiquette has opportunity for development.

    2) Anosognosia is strong on this case.

    • I thought it might be Stockholm syndrome drawing the OP back to the Supermarket and Security Guard.

      • +1

lucky I called, they were still doing it, putting hundreds at risk. If they dont abide by public health further action can be taken.

      • I thought it might be

I would like to add as point (3).

        FTFY.

    • +1

I actually browse through that earlier. Did you note the AusPost incident? Looks like Pam is at it again! I am convinced that her name is actually Karen.

      • -6

dont get me started on australia post, I once caught the flu there with a customer behind me

        • +5

I once caught the flu there with a customer behind me

How could you actually prove that this was the source of catching the flu?

          • +2

@SBOB: derrr…. because she was stuck at home for days before and after by herself and she didn't come across any other humans or touch anything when she teleported from home to the post office and back.

  • +14

    Dang! I slept in.

    Hi Pam.

    Have a great day.

  • +1

You’re right, there are a lot of situations where the sign in process/area actually gets in the way of distancing. Probably not worth the argument though. I’m surprised it’s not all app based sign in anyway.

    • +5

I wasnt looking for an argument, I just said I cant sign in so close. He got aggressive

      • +5

Yeah, I know but often it’s best to read the situation - body language etc. Sometimes is just best to sign in as quickly as you can and move on.

You can also consider ordering online since if you feel anxious about these things when you go out it’s probably for the best. realistically some people won’t social distance or wear masks properly , so if you’re uncomfortable best to avoid. I would 100% just be getting delivery if I lived in the ‘hottest hotspot’.

    • surprised it’s not all app based sign in anyway.

It varies depending upon store/area. Local Woolies/Coles have staff member sign-in customers who present without a smart phone.

      • This is true but if you’re that worried about physical distancing, ensuring you have the app would be a priority right? Although at one point at our Coles the person kept coming right up to everyone to check that they’d checked in on their app 🤦‍♀️

        • if you’re that worried about physical distancing, ensuring you have the app would be a priority right?

          Totally!

at our Coles the person kept coming right up to everyone to check that they’d checked in on their app 🤦‍♀️

I just show the screen with the green tick however feel bad for staff as there is no way one person can be expected to police QR check-ins when you have heaps of people arriving at the same time together with manual check-ins

The amount of altercations you have, have you ever thought how you express yourself and choose your words may have lead to your negative experiences? It's not normal to be "yelled" at all the time by different people.

    • -5

twice is not all the time

      • +3

It's twice more than I've ever been yelled at by store clerks etc.

  • -5

Anyway, I have a list of things to do, so I have to get going

    • +12

Haven’t you been warned by the mods for posting a rant in the forums and then disappearing when you don’t get the support you were after before?

because they believed their forum name was the source of comments about them, rather than their post content…

    • +2

      We've all said hello already.

  • +17

I stand behind the security guard.

The OP's past record suggests they easily cause or escalate a situation.

    • +2

Imagine you are in the que to buy, someone in front of you said you need to move away from me… I think these social distance had to be managed by another person, people can take it personally when asked you need to move away from them. The security guards need more training, when the security guard is told he is too close to someone, it set him off. But it is the new covid normal where people should not take things personally if they were told to move some distance away, if this happen two years ago before pandemic, people will take offence if they were told to move away from another person.

    • I stand behind the security guard.

Inches behind, or over 1.5 metres behind? 🤔

I wonder what sort of attitude and tone you used to make someone say stop telling at me. #justKarenthings

  • Typical meathead security guard … the irony is most of these tough guys couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

  • Nice story.

    Thanks.

        • Yep, he was… he was missing addition perspectives…

          • @SF3: damn im going to miss them, they had such good perspectives on the feedback they've asked for

  • Is it possible to move the sign in pad so you sign in while maintaining distance? The security should have moved when asked but you could also have done your part to protect yourself.

  • +19

I suspect their are 2 very different sides to this story. 1 from a person who is constantly creating dramatic situations and 1 from a weary guard trying to do their job.

    • +1

This! Just like the MS Paint for traffic related, we need bodycam for such rants/1 sided story.

  • +6

How did you phrase it? I suspect the guards reaction is a result of the way you approached the situation opposed to him just randomly calling you mental.

Should have just said. "sorry mate, I'm trying to maintain 1.5 metre social distancing, do you mind moving back while I sign in as I don't have my mobile phone on me to use the QR code?"

    • +6

I have a strange feeling that even the simple action of saying "no" to Pam, she would consider as "being yelled at".

    • +6

      The Scene:

Security guard detects suspicious person near by and starts approaching.

Suspect, I’ll school this Security guard about social distancing.

Suspect, yells: I cant sign it that close to you.

Security guard stands up (he is a guard afterall), Suspect considers it being an aggressive stance.

Suspect, yells: You are invading my social distance space and keep away from me.

      Security guard: stop yelling…

Suspect, the Security guard have no right to treat me this way…

Yada yada yada, posts on OzB…and here we are.

      • The scene is actually confirmed by pam in her OP.

he said You have mental problems, stop yelling

  • +1

this thread is lit, good job bois

  • +1

Explains what is happening in Sydney right now.

    1. People who don't socially distance.
    2. Security guards catch it and spread it.

Perfect hub and spoke system of how diseases spread.

Will be gold medal effort if Sydney isn't in lock down until Christmas.

    • The one at my local Coles looks like a homeless man they hired off the street!

      • +1

Upside of COVID more jobs for the homeless. Plus they know you are not from the area and tell the cops.

  • The super market "security guard" is a special breed; especially those that insist on wearing special ops gear, pseudo-kevlar vests, torches, binoculars, nail-clippers…

  • Ok Karen

  • +2

Can you just imagine how many difficult customers who won't just scan a QR code for all sorts of insane reasons a supermarket security guard (or anyone else in retail trying to enforce covid safe policies) would have to deal with?

    • +3

The security guy probably had a shift at that point full of “yOu CaNt MaKe mE sCaN iN. i KnOw mY RiGhTz…”

  • Cool story bro. I like the discount idea. Think I might try that.

  • -2

    This thread:

    • Good work OP
    • I would say good work OP but this is Pam so it must be her fault
    • omg covid isn't a risk
    • my summary
  • +4

Something about your story seems slightly off. Most supermarkets have multiple QR codes to sign in with. Assuming the sign in pad is a QR code, you should be able to scan it without needing to be right in front of the sign.

What's a sign in pad? Are you talking about the QR Code which you scan with your phone?
Was there more than one QR code available? Did you choose one right next to a security guard?

    • She bought a new phone and promptly lost the charger.

      • Promptly lost the charger so doesn't have to QR in because you are being tracked (maybe)

      • +2

Same place her keys went, one can assume

      • +3

Wow, an interesting post history. On the off-chance the OP was in the right, I can't imagine them handling the situation well.

  • +2

How many masks were you wearing?

  • If only he was sitting in a rocking chair.

    • +5

As far as we know, screensaver is hellopam.
In case you're wondering, it's a she in her early-40's from Sydney has no kids/single, can speak Mandarin, likely is from Chinese descent, always losing stuff, and has a knack for disregarding others to causing conflict.

      • Ni hao ma Pamela (Anderson?).

      • +4

I thought she would be more in her 50s or even 60s than 40s; seems to know a lot about senior discounts.

      • +1

Impressive that you gleaned so much info.

I knew some of that but thought she was a bit older since she posts about senior specials and assumed she was white..

        • +4

Yeah I don't get Asian vibes from her either.

          • @kerfuffle: its very rare for a 40-50s asian person to have perfect english like her, have no idea why they would infer that shes chinese?

  • +2

    Pam is the new Karen

    You sound like a Karen.
