Altercation with Security Guard at Supermarket

I went to a supermarket this evening that opened til midnight. I am in the hottest hotspot area for covid. The secuirty guard was perched on a seat as high as a bar stool right next to the sign in pad. Just inches away. I said I cant sign it that close to you, so he got up off the stool in a very aggressive manner and stood right in front of me, again invading my social distance space so I said keep away from me, and he said You have mental problems, stop yelling, you are mental, dont come in here when you should be in a mental hospital. I said I will complain about you. It was very unpleasant when I was just trying to keep social distance space. However something good happened later, I was 7.50 short for my groceries because I brought the wrong card, and the man behind me insisited on paying it. I will be complainig about the security guard, he needs to be trained on social distancing

behold OP - the super karen

you're the reason retail and hospo is such a thankless grind of a job

  • +2

I thought people were meming that this person sounds like Pam, but damn well played…

    • +1

Oh That's where Pam went. Thanks OP.

  • +6

OP seems neurotic, and I daresay is not presenting the facts of the situation objectively

    • +1

We can all help her. She needs it

  • +2

I get a strong feeling we're not hearing the full story here and may never will

  • +4

This is the problem with people from NSW.
90% of them make the rest look bad :(

  • +1

You sound like you have mental problems.

  • +4

One thing i learned in life: theres always 2 sides to every story. Op is leaving out some major plot hoes. No security guard just starts yelling like that unless put in an extreme situation.

OP's story is also worded like it was written by a primary school student. $7.50 short? Im thinking OP has some major mental health issues too.

  • +2

This post would fit in perfectly with Reddit's AmITheAsshole section.

    • OP doing normal interaction
    • other group with incredible overreaction
    • OP calmly indicating they've done nothing wrong
    • other group hysterical
    • loads of misinformation
    • obvious bias towards OP

Go post there and win incredible amounts of karma :)

    • +1

Agreed. I really hope most of the shit on that sub is made up.

  • +3

stay at home and get home delivery

but then again we prolly get complaints soon about the delivery driver giving u a dirty look

maybe go buy ur own island somewhere far. run ur own shops, government, delivery, restaurants etc

    and u should be good

    • +4

stay at home and get home delivery

That’s the least risky and most sensible approach, if someone really wanted to avoid getting the virus, which appears to be OP’s intent.

But, nope, OP is in an area of concern LGA, “forgets” the phone, so cannot contactless check in, has to share a pen that everyone has touched, has a shouting match with the security guard so more droplets can be expelled…

In comments discloses a click and collect from Kmart when delivery should be an option.

The “devil” is in the details indeed as OP has revealed.

  • -5

The devil is in the detail

  • +9

“If you run into an (profanity) in the morning, you ran into an (profanity). If you run into assholes all day, you're the (profanity).”

  • -1

are you in an OMGBRO wallah area? they tend to staunch anyone at the first chance

    • +1

Could also be at a bogan area like Gosford where the local bogan is going down Dan Murphy's with kids in a shopping trolley at 9am after centreline pay day?

I'd prefer omgbro area in that case

  • +1

    Hello???

He needs to sit close to ensure people dont write rubbish and move on,

He is a Security Guard, not your friendly, "Shane" from Home and Away, he is meant to be an enforcer of whatever law he's been paid to do, this means abruptly responding to STUPID requests from Karen's like you.

Asking him to move back whilst you're walking into a supermarket where you can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with someone else whilst picking your bananas is dumb move.

If you're so scared of writing something down (for 10secs??) Whilst 50cm away from someone, USE CLICK AND COLLECT

    • He needs to sit close to ensure people dont write rubbish and move on

      Wrong on both counts.

  • +5

I was 7.50 short for my groceries because I brought the wrong card, and the man behind me insisited on paying it.

I wonder if this kind man was also asked to social distance when he paid for you.

    • +2

      Hahah good one.

Did he use hand sanitiser before he gave you the change?

      • -1

no he used his contactless card if you must know. There are still some nice people in the world.

        • Well I do hope you moved at least a metre away from the person and the register and then also didn't attempt to shake their hand or any other gesture of gratitude….

… a simple shout of thank you from outside sounds like your MO…

  • -7

In the outside world, nice people generally outnumber the nasty people. Not like the online world

    • +7

No, in the outside world people are less likely to tell you how they really feel to avoid confrontation. Its just not worth a stranger's time to change another person's behaviour.

      • -3

actually that nasty security guard would find many kindred souls online. Wonder if hes reading this. If so, do not invade peoples space in a pandemic when they are going about their business in a lawful manner

        • +2

Headtohealth.gov.au - it's a great place to grab free support with issues that we all have at moments through life.

I strongly encourage you to consider this as your comments are raising flags that can be resolved through support that the government provides free of charge.

        • +1

I believe it may help if you took up stoicism.

It's our emotional reaction to events that hurt us, not the event itself. You're only hurt by this event beause you choose to emotionally respond to it. It wasn't a big deal.

The chance that guard would give you covid is extremely slim. The chances increased when you decided to start conversing emotionally with the guy.

          • @CalmLemons: I did not want any conversation, just space to sign the book. He forced a conversation by getting in my face, so I had to again ask him to move away

    • +5

hello, you are full of contradictions, pam.

Why did you come online here looking for our support and sympathy when you think that we are full of nastiness?

      • -1

I am talking about whats going on in the world, beyond this forum.

        • +2

The majority of people here are aware of what's going on in the world beyond this forum. Everyone wants lockdown to end. There's even some acknowledgement of your situation.

The problem is that your version of events is questionable. It's called into further doubt when viewed with the context of your post history and how you've previously handled situations.

          • +1

@ihfree: Large swaths of people don't want lock down to end given how they're flaunting rules and whining about avoiding vaccination

    • No they don't poopy face /jk

  • +1

Not that I distrust you, but I'd need more context and would love to hear the other party's side of events.

  • If you're both wearing masks and neither of your are coughing/sneezing then it's pretty safe to briefly enter another person's 1.5m zone. It's the droplets that are most infectious.

    • +1

      it's pretty safe

      no it's not…

masks just reduce the risk a little bit… the virus is still in the air and you can still breathe it in…

      • You might need to consider living inside a bubble.

        • +2

JV actually has a point this time.

        • You might need to consider living inside a bubble.

          No need when you're vaccinated…

  • +2

dont get me started on australia post, I once caught the flu there with a customer behind me

@OP comments within this post that's are suss as the post itself.

@op are you seeking validation of the ozbargain community in this? What does being $7.5 short have to do with the topic/issue? Are you just trolling?

The security guard has to deal with some real unique personas and during lockdown I genuinely feel sorry for them. Maybe just give security a wide birth and let them do their job, its perfectly fine for a security guard to be next to the sign in pad.

If you're uncomfortable with the situation you could have opted for contact free pick up and your issue with security and social distancing are resolved. In a supermarket you inevitably are just as close to other patrons as you were to the security guard.

    Or shop somewhere else?

I'd hate to think that a security guard in a covid hotspot trying to make ends meet may be in trouble with his employer over something so trivial than this account by OP at 3am ಠ_ಠ

    • -6

when people lives are at stake, I will say something

      • You've clearly missed the point I was making, headtohealth.gov.au

I wish someone told me about the free support to work out my issues. A councillor/psych is definitely a suitable person to speak to regarding your incidents.

  • +5

You have mental problems, stop yelling, you are mental, dont come in here when you should be in a mental hospital.

Mate, lol'ed at this one I really did. Made my morning.

  • +2

This has to be a troll account right?

    • No it was set up to give trolls something to do

      • Is your account used by multiple people? Is that what you're saying?

It's fairly unanimous position from the pages of replies that your account of the situation and your behaviour towards other users that you've exhibited is troubling.

The sheer fact that you refuse to acknowledge or suggest that you could be in the wrong shows that the security guard may have been genuinely concerned about your mental health and may have said it in the wrong manner.

Headtohealth.gov.au - what's the worst that can happen from a free consultation?

      • So more than one will be using it?

  • +2

Sorry OP your just looking for trouble. The security guard is already under stress and pressure and sorry to say but your a dill

    • -7

as they say, it takes one to know one

      • +4

as they say, it takes one to know one

So remember that next time you are calling someone else rude and aggressive.

      • They also say, whoever smelt it, dealt it.

  • still waiting for the post from security guard so we can hear story from two side and if we are lucky, maybe a post from witness and store staff/manager..

  • Irrespective of whether you believe this is going too far, the shop is not being consistent. If you are forcing people to sign in before entering the store, uphold the requirement to social distance. If you aren't going to bother enforcing that to your staff, don't set lofty standard for your customers (legal requirements aside)

  • +2

    Hello Pam :)

      • There is one Pam more famous than any of those. Australia's darling.

  • Pam should have a sketch show.

  • +1

Pam always gets pages and pages of attention….no wonder he/she/non-binary gender identifier of his/her/non-binary gender identifier choice, keeps posting crap.

    • And yet….. here you are.

      • +1

        If you can't beat'em… Join'em 🤣

How does one measure the "hottest hotspot for Covid"?
I assumed you are either a hotspot or you are not a hotspot.
Is there a hotspot Olympics where you compete for Covid19 gold?

    • +1

The 'Gold standard' of hotspots? 😂

" Bunnings ad for Karens" by Chopper

    https://youtu.be/rzRzL8T03Ao

  • Wtf?

  • In here, there are stickers with QR codes in multiple locations so that we can keep distance from anyone. I thought it is the case all around the country,

    • +1

She forgot to carry her phone with her.

      • +2

        Incorrect.

She couldn't use her phone because it was not charged. Why wasn't it charged, you asked? That's another chapter in the life of hellopam.

        • +1

Yes apparently she forgot to have a charged phone to sign in and also forgot to bring a card to pay for her groceries. But everything else was the rude security guards fault.

  • +4

op is the problem here for sure.

  • +2

This thread is gold. But sincerely Pam I hope you have someone genuine in your life who listens to you and cares for you

  • +3

You certainly did the right thing OP, you can't let him get too close: https://youtu.be/Q8XwCeiw1nE?t=25

    • Hahahaha, you got me with that one.

  • As they were open until midnight, I assume it was one of the big 2 supermarkets. In my Sydney suburb, these have Covid check-ins on almost every wall (ie multiple options on which one to use). Could it be that he thought you were being difficult, wanting to scan one that was just behind him?

    • OP didn't have their phone as they somehow managed to lose their charging cable despite it being a brand new phone.

  • +1

don't you have better things to do?

  • Facebook starting to look different

    • -1

This is not a facebook matter, social distancing is a serious matter of concern. I have had several clueless people stick on like glue in queues when I am trying to move away from them. I have never said anything until now, except I once asked a cashier for help and she ignored me. So posting to a few facebook friends will achieve nothing. At least awareness has now been given to this matter,
Personally I would prefer the Nova Vax vaccine, as it is made in the traditional way of recognising the spike protein. Its been ordered I believe

      • +1

Yeah no, I don't think the awareness you are referring to is quite the same as what most here are thinking….

But be happy! You no longer need a smart phone to scan QR codes. You can get your very own QR code from service nsw and have them scan you!

        • yes I called about that, starts Friday

  • -1

First world problem at its finest.

You are a typical entitled citizen of a wealthy country. Go live in a third world country for a while and you'll be ashamed of problems you have in your daily life in comparison.

      • -1

I'm sure security guard was Indian or something that made the op more "Courage" to confront him.

        • Do you actually think that makes a difference ?

          • @Gervais fanboy: Makes a difference in how much the op would have felt entitled.

          • @Gervais fanboy: I will know when I go to that store next time. If its the same set up then I will alert the authorities

            • -1

@screensaver: I understand but why do you have to be that person.
Stop reprimanding and confronting everyone that doesn’t meet your standards..
Its perfectly okay to hold back even when you don’t like or approve of someone.
By being this difficult you are just making your own life bitter and so strenuous. Your happiness is in your own hands miss.
If you are that concerned about Covid, just do your best to protect yourself. Stop picking fights with everyone.. Security people work really long hours, they are bound to slip up sometimes. Have some compassion.

I remember as a kid watching my grandmother always buying extra fruits and treats for the working class and people around us in the community coz she chose to deal in positivity and love.
She lived a very happy life and no one ever bothered her.
How about next time, you post something positive on the site. About a family in financial distress or a struggling business close to you, rally people to help support someone in need. I promise I’ll be the first one to make a contribution to a noble cause if you can find one.
Its never too late to change my friend..

              • -3

@Gervais fanboy: You are completely wrong, I am the happiest person you could meet, a healer and a positive person. I feed homelsss cats evety night and have made 2 donations to world food programs in the last week. I sometimes repeat mistakes until I learn them which in this case is posting here. My bad.

                • +1

@screensaver: You might be a ‘happy person’ but I couldn’t pick any of that happiness of yours, from your historic posts and the countless comments that you have submitted in these threads.. Maybe I assumed and got it wrong. Apologies

Anyways, happy to hear that you rate yourself as a happy and positive individual.
You can always add to that though, stop picking fights with the people around you.
Get your next order delivered to you, woolworths online sometimes randomly offers free delivery slots, keep an eye out on them and use their service instead.

I’d love to help you set it up, if need be.

I just feel bad for that security guy and the supermarket employees that you are so desperately looking to confront to make yoir point

        • -3

Asking for space to sign in is not confronting, I would have asked anyone on that night as I needed to go in the store. Amazing how everything gets twisted around. Note to self, not worth it

  • +2

I’m assuming as the security guard was ‘perched’ on his seat in close proximity to sign in register his actual job was to make sure people do in fact sign in.
Out of curiosity did you start your sentence with some form of positive open-passive language like “excuse me, do you mind if I have some space as I am trying to keep my distance from people” that way your not negging him for his proximity rather yourself…. Just a thought. Sometimes the way we initiate a conversation is the determinant of the response - and who knows what sort of day the security guard has had (and yourself, but kindness goes a long way).

  • lol

  • +2

Worlds gone mad. 98% recovery rate.. yet lock her down boys

  • Pam's done it again. Was this a statement thread. Most ppl would just sign and move on. If you were so inclined to feel invaded by space and not comfortable with the social distance you can just ask in a polite manner and tone for them to please provide some 1. 5 distance, so you can sign in and do what you need to do. I would have just walked past if he didn't make the space to sign. If a fuss I would have just gone elsewhere if the security guy was a (profanity). But hey that's just me.

    • -2

This was to bring attention to whats going wrong in the hotspots, and fyi I did ask in a polite tone, and he would not let me past, it was close to midnight and there was nothing else open so I had to endure his behaviour. But hey thats just me. You must be so much better and smarter than me.
