Telstra Changes to Existing nbn Plans

Pretty dissapointing as I have old discounts which means I was getting 100/40 for $90 a month but more importantly the phone was bundled in. Now it's not an issue for my connection as I only have internet and can switch easy for a similar deal but proves difficult for the family's connection that relies on the home phone as part of the deal. So effectively my option if I stay with Telstra is to downgrade to 50/20 and pay more ($95).

Both connections on HFC.

Guess it was good while it lasted.

Anyone in a similar boat?

    Churning is easy

    Why stay with Telstra?

    • Why stay with Telstra?

      The challenge…

simply change NBN provider plenty of ISP provide NBN 100 for 90 ish dollars,

Plenty ISP provide NBN 50 for around 50 ish dollars

    • You have a list of the NBN50 for $50? My research shows these are now around $70

      • +1

Both exetel and aquamobile were offering nbn 50 for 50$ pretty recently

        • Alright I'll have another look. Thanks for getting back to me.

          • -1

            @Caped Baldy: Otherwise tangerine s nbn 25 for 44.9
            Or belong s nbn 30 for 55 a month

Both are reasonable deals as well

            • @USER DC: The belong deal is no more otherwise I would go on that.

  • Yeah it's definitely time to churn and take advantage of deals, this was just easier to deal with as I didn't have to be constantly changing deals to get that kind of price.

My only question is, how does the home phone work with other ISP's (as Telstra you would directly plug the phone into a socket on their modem)?

    • -1

Cant you simply get another phone and sim? heard dodo was doing $5 unlimited calls and messages monthly no contract if that is still on,

Otherwise you can also go with Belong for 1 year use some referrals to get $20 of first month of their NBN, and free modem on 1 year, plus double data on mobile sim, (given not activating it on a certain 4 dates in a month), and you can later essentially sell your data to someone to recover additional costs. Free NBN with belong for first month(unless activated on end of month or 1st (e.g. after the service is activated on 2nd its free until the end of month)

      • No, it's a landline number that the parents use.

    • +1

Optus and TPG = direct to modem.
Aussie BB = direct to modem, IP handset, ATA device.
FTTP = sometimes direct to the nbn NTD UNI-V voice port.

      • FTTP = sometimes direct to the nbn NTD

        why sometimes ?

        • +2

Not all ISPs offer a UNI-V voice service.

Couple of threads over on WP. Yep lots of people upset!!!

    • That was fun reading! Sadly an end of an era for lots. Can totally understand why Telstra is doing it, just shit timing.

  • +1

Same thing happened to me. They're charging me $20 more for the same speed plan as my old HFC. The NBN download speed is slightly slower but the upload speed is slightly faster.
They're closing down the old HFC so these are the new prices. Go to Aussie Broadband. Telstra suck!

    • They're closing down the old HFC

What do you mean by that?

      • +1

Changing from Telstra HFC to NBN HFC.

        • +1

Ah right, yes I remember the NBN guy coming over to install the black NBN box which replaced Telstra's modem.

      • +2

Telstra sold their copper HFC network and infrastructure to NBN 7 years ago and is moving all their HFC customers to NBN as soon as their area is connected to the NBN. The Optus cable network is also being dismantled and all customers are moving to NBN.

        • +1

The Optus cable network is also being dismantled

More like "left to rot" or "forgotten" than dismantled.

  • Same boat. Curious to see what everyone will jump to.

    • -2

      another ISP perhaps ?

    • +1

ISPs who have 100/40 = Future BB, Superloop, Launtel, Aussie BB, Mate, Swoop.

  • +1

Good luck if you are trying to move your number to a separate voip provider and trying to time the switch. There's a chance you'll lose your number or be without internet for a while.

    • +1

Odd….People still use the 'landline'? Mine hasn't been plugged in for years.

      • +2

You or I may not understand it but that's what they grew up with and it's the only way that other oldies also contact them…

      • People still use the 'landline'?

Yes, mainly to receive calls, also for business calls to have a dedicated DID for customers to call back on.

        • Not to mention the call quality can be much better.

    • This is what worries me, I don't have the time right now to deal with changing my families connection especially with the reliance on the home phone service.

Can you elaborate further on the timing issue?

      • +3

When you port the phone number, Telstra will cancel the internet.

If you switch the internet before porting the number, Telstra may cancel the phone service and you'll lose the number.

Both need to happen at the same time which is almost impossible to organise.

        • When I changed from Telstra to AussieBB they (AussieBB) ensured the phone had been safely ported across before arranging the change of internet.
Had a week or two delay as it took Telstra that long to action it but AussieBB ensured the transfer of phone service (and number) was completed beforehand.
So, not impossible, you just need to find a new provider who does it well (good luck with that).

          • @Grunntt: Do Aussie broadband then allow you to port out the phone, but keep the internet ???

This might be a good way to split the two services.

            • @jv: Phone and internet are not bundled with AussieBB.
I only keep the basic plan ($0 ongoing and pay per call) as the older part of the extended family can't get their head around calling a mobile number.

              • @Grunntt:

Phone and internet are not bundled with AussieBB.

But do they let you churn out a voip number you have with them?

                • @jv: Haven't needed to check that but they are pretty helpful and knowledgable whenever I've called them so may be worth a quick call - wait times are usually pretty short and they will call back if you are in a longer wait. (longer for them seems to be more than 4 or 5 minutes).

    bastards
not sure why they want to reduce upload, whenever there has been congestion on the network it is never on the upload side anyway.

    • not sure why they want to reduce upload

My guess is they are just doing it because they can, and they know it will annoy some customers.

    • Tangerine doesn't offer 40Mbps upload plans (unless I overlooked). And I'm quite disappointed they do not explicitly list out their upload speed for plans.

  • I use Aussie Broadband for home phone, had ported out from Internode back in pre-NBN days.

Same boat here. Going from 100/40 on Telstra hfc nbn for $90/month to 100/20 for $95/month (for 12 months) then $110/thereafter.

For some reason Telstra have offered me $95/month for 12 months before the $110/month kicks in it, but not to you OP?

I'm switching to superloop 100/20 $69.95/month for 6 months ($89.95/month thereafter), before the $95 starts anyway. I'll reassess 6 months later, maybe go to ABB for 6 months for $79.90 or similar. Anyway here is my email if it helps:

To help with the transition we're giving you a $15 credit for 12 months so you'll pay $95 for the next 12 months. We've applied this credit to keep your price close to your current plan price as your Premium Speed add-on was provided at a discounted rate. • Getting from 100/40 on Telstra hfc for $90/M to 100/20 for 95/M for 12 months.

Called Telstra to make complaint and was offered 100/20 for 100/M =) Genius!

I'm switching to Superloop 100/40 $79.95/M for 6 Months and reevaluation in 6 months. My work need more upload speed. If there is 50/40 plan for cheaper, I would take that. The difference between 50 is 100 is better than marginal but not life changing.

  • So far it seems mainly HFC customers are impacted?
I'm on FTTN and (touch wood) have not received any such email.

    • -1

So far it seems mainly HFC customers are impacted?

Bigpond cable customers are impacted too as they are turning off that service…

    • I'm fibre to the node and I received an email. Telstra are only holding my price for three months though. I 'm currently looking for another provider.

  • Have iiNet ultrafast 1000/50 for $110 p/m.

    • +1

How do you get this deal? We are in the same boat with Telstra (don't need their bundled landline)

      • Got the free upgrade for 6 months then was offered it for extra $10 p/m. Was pay $99.99 for 100/40.
My deco m5 mesh system I have only gives me 500/40 odd which I didn't know about, need the X60 was told for the ultrafast.

        • only gives me 500/40

          that sucks…

          • @jv: you joking?

        • Thanks - so not available for new customers.

  • +1

I was offered the same deal as for hamza23. This is pretty much what Telstra is offering to new customers at the moment - $15/mth credit for 12 months on Premium Unlimited Internet with landline inclusion.

If you don't mind paying $95 for 100/20, I reckon Telstra may give this to you without too much difficulty if you ask, since it is available to new customers. This is not a lock-in plan, so should give you ample time to consider the next steps, such as switching, etc.

Good luck, and if you decide to try this option, let us know if you are successful.

  • Don't ever go to telstra.. very very bad experience. I opted for telstra home broadband connection. They send modem to my address and the startrack delivered my modem to somewhere. When i called Startrack no proper response and asked me to raise complaint in Telstra. I raised the issue in telstra app and the telstra expert asked me to check with local store. I went to local store and they told there is no stock and no proper response. Again i had a chat with telstra expert and told them the whole story. Again and again they are asking same questions and the issue keep on forwarding to different people but nothing happened. I have been chasing for last 2 days and still they are asking same questions. In my account it says order completed. I asked them to cancel the order but not cancelling since order is completed.

Really frustrated and don't know what to do…..

    • Avoid Telstra Chat. you are wasting your time.

  • +1

I received this change as well. I figure its about time to change providers.
If I want to switch NBN providers (most likely ABB) do I just need to sign up to a new plan and that automatically cancels my current plan with telstra, or would I need to provide telstra notice? Also, how long does it usually take for a new service to activate? I have been with telstra forever

  • +1

I am currently helping my elder neighbours who have recently received the email saying that their current plan is going to be $80 per month on 25 mpbs speed.

i have checked their usage over the past 10 months and was below 100gb.

I am transferring them to ABB seniors at the end of their current billing period,

    my 2hoots to hel$tra.

  • Managed to neg $70 for new 100/20 plan time will tell if it actually happens

    • I tried to ask for $70 100/20. They don't bother. Telling me switching service provider is my choice and I agreed.

  • Exactly the same boat. Different switching date though, 22 Sep. No much difference. Tried to message Customer Support and phone and even make complaints on Telstra website. Nothing happened. The level of indifference is insane.

  • "Due to increasing cost of providing internet services in Australia"…. WTF does this mean exactly Telstra ?

    • If that's the case why haven't we heard of other ISP providers increasing their prices?

Screw you telstra I will be churning

      • its so vague and typically unchallenged isn't it.

  • phone number can be ported to any other carrier …

if they're halving your current speed, request that they half your current bill or honor the contract you signed … be the Karen, escalate, complain, ask for managers, you'll get the price you want, Telstra are flexible like that
