Hi all, picked up a Flirc Pi Zero case for my recently purchased Pi Zero W and thought I would post.
I happened to see it come up in Amazon while browsing, and after checking 3Camel, google shopping and the deal history, determined it to be the equal cheapest price (as per previous deals).

This has been posted before, but as the last post is expired and was back in April, I figured it might help some people, particularly as we have had Pi Zero restocks since then.

Both the Pi4 case models (silver and kodi colour schemes) are also at the equal lowest price.

I also have the Pi4 silver case (purchased from a previous deal), and can say that both it and the PiZero case perform extremely well and have good fit and finish compared to other cases I've tried.

For the PiZero, the Flirc case seems to be by far and away the best case on the market.
For the Pi4, the Flirc case is one of the best thermal performers, and potentially the best passive cooling.
For the Pi4 other noteable options are those from Argon40, with their Neo and One cases, which both offer more features and similar cooling, at a higher price.

  • Very tempted by that PiZero case.
    I carry a PiZeroW and a foldable keyboard in my backpack always, in case I need a trusted PC for tasks.

    They run off even the smallest battery banks that most of us carry these days, without issue.

    I might be able to push my OC further with a case like this. Right now It's just a ramsink and conformal coating.

      Mine was actually delivered this morning and I haven't oc'd my zero before. It does look like it would cool really well though, being a cut down version of the other flirc cases with thermal pad to aluminium case protrusion.

      I also like that it is mostly sealed too. I sometimes take mine with me, or set it up in dusty places, and this case seems like it would keep a lot more of the dust off the board compared to the plastic cases i've used.

      Only thing I can nitpick them on is that the micro sd is not accessible once the case is installed - have to unscrew the back, remove the board to change micro sd.
      That being said I don't think I've ever changed the micro sd on my zero. I usually muck about and test things on my pi4.
      Might be a pain for people that have the pi zero as their only pi though.

        Can I highly suggest you overclock at least a little?

        gpu_freq=475
        core_freq=475
        sdram_freq=475

        Can usually be hit without adding any extra voltage, or at least only needing Overvoltage 1 or 2.
        It's extremely safe.

        More importantly though; is this line:

        dtoverlay=sdhost,overclock_50=100

        Be sure you have a backup of your microSD, because it can corrupt it (but not damage it).
        It'll happen quickly if it's going to happen. It's all to do with whether your MicroSD can write fast enough.

        If you're using an 'Endurance' card (you should be!) so it's mostly SLC, then it'll laugh happily at this request.

        Basically, the biggest latency in the Pi's is the microSD. The performance difference is just indescribable. My PiZeroW boots to Raspbian desktop in about 30 seconds.
        Originally boot alone took about 55 seconds. It's a huge improvement.

        at least try:

        dtoverlay=sdtweak,overclock_50=80

        If you're feeling cautious.

        • nah all or nothing, then less if it doesn't work :P i'll give it a crack.
          mainly just been using it as pihole or a file share so far, as i have the pi4 for heavier things, so hadn't looked into any of the performance tweaking available.

          eventually i'd like to 3d print or otherwise make a case for it that nicely packages it with a phone charger brick, so that it looks like those wifi range extenders that plug into the powerpoint.
          it would then act as a micro server that just plugs in to the powerpoint and goes with no other connections or switches or anything.

          I currently have the zero dongle that I used to plug the zero into a standard pc for power, network and peripherals over usb a and i can ssh into it from that standard pc.

          Got it because it was cheap, easy and solderless, so i could add and remove it depending on what i wanted to do.

          The zero stem is the smallest of all the off the shelf usb a solutions, so if I could do one of those and modify this flirc case with a dremel to suit, that would get me most of the way there.

    • what are you using as display for your portable setup? ssh via your phone? video capture to your phone?

      • Most places I stay have a TV, hotels, hostels, peoples guest rooms.
        I can VNC into it over wifi if I chose to, but it's really just a portable PC for when I stop somewhere and it makes more sense than trying to use a phone.

        The PiZeroW can usually be powered off the TV's 'service' USB port too.

  • Does the Pi4 case support any PoE HAT with passive cooling?

  • I have no idea why PI's are so expensive here comparing the US. I got one Vilros pi4 4gb kit from Amazon US recently (still cheaper than local board only) but 110V charger still kills it.

    If anyone knows where to get them cheapish much appreciated.

    • How much was that kit? It's like 70US at the moment, so MUCH more expensive than locally.

      I just order mine from RS.

      • I think i paid like 120 aud. I didn't want to mock around from 8 different seller for 1 kit. It was also my first pi i wouldn't get the kit now haha

        • Between mouser, rs and littlebird, you can usually get all you need.

          Ive never needed more than 3 sellers to get the best deal.

          • +1

            @MasterScythe: I like core electronics.
            Haven't used the others for Pi stuff, but I know that RS has been a pain in the arse for me at times with other things.
            Not their fault, but just slow shipping etc. So if you can get stuff elsewhere for the same or slightly more, it;s usually worth it.

    • i got a pi4 4gb kit from one of the amazon deals in the past. was $124 from memory.
      came with a 64gb micro sd with pi os preinstalled, cheap aftermarket case with fan, heatsinks, 2 micro to full hdmi cables, aftermarket psu with inline switch (same output specs as official though).

      the 4gb models can be had cheaper now, but at the time for whatever reason, those kits were the same price or cheaper when you included shipping, than buying the board and psu on their own.

    Is it just a case?

    • …yes.
