[Pre Order] $1200 off Any iPhone 13 on a $99/M Telstra 24m Plan (Port-in & New Customer) In-Store @ JB Hi-Fi

822

JB Hi-Fi is offering $1200 off any iPhone 13 on the $99m 150GB (24mths) plan. See also the previous post specific to iPhone 13 Pro: [Pre Order] iPhone 13 Pro 128GB $499, with $99/Month Telstra 150GB 24M Plan (New & Port-in Customers) in-Store @ JB Hi-Fi

Or you can get $500 off any iPhone 13 on the $69m 80GB (12) plan.

It’s a great deal if you need loads of data and can claim your phone bill on the tax return.

I went to the store (Southport) and they didn’t have any banners on asides for one saying iPhone 13 $150 upfront with $99m plan.

I enquired them about it and they said it’s a $1200 gift card towards any of the iPhones 13.
Or you can get $500 gift card on the $69m plan, which is not as good as the $600 one, but it’s still nice.

You can also get a Galaxy S21 5G 128GB for $199 upfront with the $69m plan.

@ely: Based on your calculations/ assumptions, my mom is on 0.01$ a month plan(Kogan) no lock in contract, gets a brand new number every months. No issues and covers way more than her needs, so, for her, you plan is 299.76% expensive to her. Not a bargain then I believe.

What I am saying is, everyones needs is different.

            • -2

@Kabin999: Good to see that you're saying the same thing as me then, I hope you weren't one of the idiots negging me for pointing that out.

Surprised that pointing out that it depends, rather than it's a 1200 saving, is somehow controversial rather than obvious.

              • +3

@ely: Don't think you quite understood what people were pointing out to you… Why criticise that this is 2k more than your current. Totally irrelevant to this deal it's self
If you're wanting an iPhone 13 and you use lots of data it's a decent plan. If you plan to have the cheapest plan possible for your needs and you don't need an iPhone 13,then this deal is definitely not for you. You were told from your first comment you're comparing something low to something alot higher, but you still argue your point that you only need 6gb over 150gb.

              • +2

@ely: What I was and other people are saying is, the comparison you have done is irrelivant. Why? Because you are comparing
                1) Vaya with Telstra, who prefers Vaya, Dodo, Kogan or any other provider if they can get Telstra on cheap
                2) For the price you are paying, you have 6gb data and as you are saying, it covers your need but there are a lot people who need more than 6gb data you get, so they might want to go with this deal.

Basically your comparison is like Economic Flight on Tiger air to Say a 1st Class premium flights of Delta or any other Airlines. Both will take you to the destination but how you will reach will be different.

  • Wish you could combine it with the trade in Apple gives you on old handsets.

    • +4

You can still sell it privately and get more money.

      • I know I know but it's the effort.

  • +2

I'm not sure giving Telstra $2400 to save $1200 is a great deal…maybe I missed something?

    • +1

I mean it means fifty a month for a 150gb Telstra plan.

      Not bad for extreme users

  • +22

Considering the tax implications - this is actually a great deal tbh.

However for those who cannot otherwise claim on tax and don’t use much internet, @roguewolf is right, terrible deal.

      • Tax as in for work?

      • +3

You can claim any phone plan on your tax. It doesn't matter if it's a $99/month or $99/year. The more you pay, the more out of pocket you are…

        • +1

Agreed, however it’s also based on need. Thus I mentioned the caveat of internet usage as well (I have no broadband, so this will work out better for me, as I can’t claim broadband on tax)

There are other pros including being on the telstra network.

It’s important to note that everyone’s financial situation is different and that’ll change how it works for everyone.

      • Can you clarify what do you mean with tax implications?

        • +9

As in, claiming the phone's outright cost (as well as plan cost) for work purposes. For me, realistically I use my phone for work 90% of the time, if not more for calls. Since phone usage is largely calculated based on calls in the eyes of the ATO, I can claim 90% of the cost of the phone as well as the plan on my taxable income.

Say you spend $1000 on your phone, and $1000 on your plan in 1 year. 90% of that total $2000 is $1800.

So take $1800 off your taxable income. If you earn $181,800 for example, your new taxable income would be $180,000. Effectively meaning you save $810 from tax (45% for every dollar over $180,000). So your actual out of pocket cost from that $1800 is $990.

Thus the true cost of the phone over 1 year would be $990+200 = $1190.
If you sell your phone yearly, like I do with the iPhone, you get back about $1200 in cash.

This means you're effectively profiting $10 every year for getting a new phone. Re-jig the numbers a bit and you might be able to find something that works for you.

only small upside I find is if you're intending to lock yourself in a 24m plan because you can't afford to buy it outright, a quick look it's cheaper than other telcos & has more data, but you have to pay X amount upfront.

Another breakdown to compare against other telcos 24m plans,

Price per month over 24m including upfront cost:

      iPhone 13

      iPhone 13 (128GB) – $105.20
      iPhone 13 (256GB) – $112.29
      iPhone 13 (512GB) – $126.87

      iPhone 13 Mini

      Mini (128GB) – $99
      Mini (256GB) – $106.04
      Mini (512GB) – $120.62

      iPhone 13 Pro

      Pro (128GB) – $119.79
      Pro (256GB) – $126.87
      Pro (512GB) – $141.45
      Pro (1TB) – $156.04

      iPhone 13 Pro Max

      Pro Max (128GB) – $126.04
      Pro Max (256GB) – $133.12
      Pro Max (512GB) – $147.70
      Pro Max (1TB) – $162.29

Any deals for existing telstra customers?

    • Put money in hole, now shut up!

Seriously though, you need to port out of Telstra in August ;)

  • +1

    $99/mth for 150GB.

Yet they can't even offer $9.99/mth for 15GB.

    • +1

Fancy that. A business that is trying to turn a profit!

  • +5

Tried to pre-order iPhone 13 yesterday in-store and the sales person just kept insisting me to sign up for this deal, I said nup, I just want the phone and just kept asking what telco I am on, I said Telstra XL plan for $65/month deal, then they stfu. lol

  • +1

Those suggesting buying outright, how much do you guys spend for your monthly phone bill? $10-15?

    • I'm on boost $240 yearly (normally $300) and unlimited calls and text plus 300GB of data. I have one month left and still have 170GB left… Lol.

      • +1

That’s good value at $20 per month. Do they have 5G?

        • No. No MVNOs does.

        • They have 4GX - none of the other Telstra resellers do.

    • Approaching 2 years for free with a certain Telco.

      • +5

        Go on…

    • $10pm on Amaysim 3Gb….

    • With vodafone unltd talk n text + international calls/text + 60gb full speed and then unltd at 10mbps for 55pm.
      20 credit

So falls to 35 per month.

      • $1 for a device for 12 months committment. Last time it was motorola one and before that it was samsung a11.. my current commitment expires in 2 months so hope to get a new one.
  • good deal

  • What's the minimum cost if you cancel right after you signed up for the 24 and 12 months plan?

    • I would like to know this as well. Also whether or not I would have to refund the $1200 discount amount ?

I am willing to keep the plan for year and then cancel after that. In that case do I still have to pay back the $1200 discount amount?

      Can anyone share their experience?

  • +1

Calls and SMS to International numbers

Your Plan does not include an International Call and SMS allowance.

    The following charges apply:
calls to international numbers – for call rates to overseas, see telstra.com.au/mobile-other-call-types
SMS to international numbers – 50¢ per standard message sent per recipient; and
MMS to international numbers – 75¢ per standard message sent per recipient.

  • Trying to weigh this up,

I’m out of contract and Telstra switched plans on me
Put me on a $65/80GB a month. (With a 10/15$ per month discount for the first 12 months)

    iPhone 13 pro is 1700 with a 10% discount through work $1530

    Hmmm

  • can i do this online for the $500 deal?
and when does this deal expire?

  • Can the outright be a bit cheaper around Black Friday? How much is max discount usually on iPhones?

  • +12

    These deals annoy me.

I'd happily pay $30/month for a Telstra 5g plan with 5-10gb of data, but they have nothing for this segment if the market.

In telstra's warped mind, I have to d*ck around with the tattoo'd guy (and multiple piercing) at JB hifi, then figure out how to sell the phone or gift card … and I'd still finish up with a plan that cost $35+/month and more data than I can reasonably consume (even if I start jerking off 10 times a day).

Instead, I'll stick to a 4g plan for $10/month that lets me jerk off 3-6 times a day.

    • +1

      Bahahah thanks for the laugh

    • +1

      Switch to 4K mate.

      A) you won’t regret the added visuals and

      B) it’s around 5-20gb per hour depending on compression so you’ll be sure to burn through your data in the allocated time period.

      • 5-20gb per hour

wha - you need more than 30secs of material? Check out the 30 seconds to fap videos … 4k 60fps … play in loop

Can I use this sim into a wifi device to share all data across devices and end my wifi contract ?
Even though we have daily 14-16 hrs of youtube/netflix running on tv/mobile/laptop, still 150gb/month data is more than what my whole family can use in a month.

    • You will have to use the iPhone as a hotspot

  • Where can I find this deal on wesbite?

  • -5

OMG, Apple, came from nowhere, held the best eco system for long and now is fading fast!
20W max charging LOL, even Marques is calling you laughing stock! Android is nearing 200W!!!
Super low speed 5G! omg only dumb people buy

Ah well, one could do worse and believe Gerry's bargains….

  • +1

I don't believe you can get this over the phone. I've just called their sales line and they said in store only?

    • +1

Yeah the guy on the Sales hotline number I spoke to said this wasn't even a deal, might be select stores.
EDIT: Called my local JB-HiFi directly, and they said they haven't got a workaround for the 'in-store special specials' for areas currently in lockdown. The only mechanism they have is via the standard sales hotline, which doesn't do 'special specials', only standard advertised specials. Supposedly they're working on a fix for this in the coming weeks that Telstra have finally approved (perhaps a contractual sign-up issue? Not sure…).

      • +1

Thanks for the details. I'll be keen to sign up over the phone but we can't. Damn lockdown

    • +1

I just rang our local store and apparently you can get it over the phone as of today. You need to go to the website and press 'services' and then 'mobile phone plans' and then 'request a callback'. They then have someone from the mobile department call you. I am waiting now.

      • That was a quick turn of events, hope it’s true!
Let us know how you go and I might follow suit. I got put through to the mobile department of my local store yesterday (that’s who gave me the story that they’re working on an over-the-phone solution).

        • They didn't call back before close of business so hoping they call today (Wed). Will let you know.

          • +2

@Nici Nic: The store called back this morning. Did number port over the phone and was able to collect the sim card at store.

  • I'm on a Sim-Only Telstra plan. Is there anyway I could leave Telstra and port back in (with this deal) and keep my number?

  • +1

bugger already preordered a iphone 13 pro max 1TB on friday night, not cancelling it because i am one of the ones getting it delivered on the 24th

  • -1

    PSA

DO NOT ORDER OVER PHONE If you intend to port your number.

They put the port request in BEFORE THE SIM ARRIVES TO YOU.

I'm currently left without mobile service because my sim is 2 days away per tracking.
    - This is despite being reassured this wouldn't happen on the phone.

    • Did you get the voucher right away or do they send out later? Considering porting in via the phone and being without service a bit so I can order the phone sooner.

    • Bacon

had the same problem was ported out before the sim arrives Im still waiting 4 days now. I called and basically they said it was Optus who jumped the gun.

      I hate Startrack.

How long before the sent through the JB HIFI gift card?

  • -1

    So cheap! Not good!

  • Can someone please explain how to get the $10 port-in bonus?

I ported out to Optus a few months ago in prep for this, but if I go into store they will port in my number there. How do people hassle Telstra chat to apply a $10 credit to it AFTER the fact?

  • Doing some math as well.

    Telstra 80GB SIM-ONLY plan (no lock in)- $65 p.m.
Port In discount (if you can get) $10 p.m.

    So $14 p.m saving over JB's $69 = $168

Add that to the $300 you can save by using the Woolies 30x points (I think it expires today 21/09)

Paying $32 over 12 months to NOT be in a locked in contract seems better

  • Can anyone tell me how to get the $10 port in credit. I just tried via the chat in Telstra app with no success?

  • Worth noting the XL plan (180GB) is on sale at the moment, for $65 per month direct with Telstra. Also Optus has brought back their Promo plan in repsonse, 500GB for the same price. Both plans return to a higher price after a year, although with no contract there will likely be better options this time next year.

  • Is this not a better deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/652749 ?

Only thing is it's Vodafone, but I believe they've gotten better over the past couple years. Considering biting the bullet on one of these deals.
