Before "favourite tomatoes" vs "buy aussie" comments, I'm going to channel the old el paso kid: why not use both?

    • +3

Hanging off your comment to say that I use this and the tomatoes I grow to make really good homemade tomato sauce.

    • Yeah I buy the big cans of Ardmona crushed tomatoes. They’re good, and it’s supporting the locals. But we also buy the Italian passata because it’s delicious and I don’t think Ardmona make passata.

    • +2

Used to buy ardoma because aussie but there's just no contest in taste.

Mutti = 100% tomatoes from the richer volcanic soils of italy. Theyre just way tastier.

ALL of the aussie stuff has additives in them like emulsifiers, thickeners, preservatives etc and just simply arent as flavourful.

If there was an Aussie brand that tasted as good without all the crap i'd buy them even with an increased price. But there isnt.

Bonus cardboard; underrated for those of us with fires to light.

    • This is true OzB spirit 🔥

      • what is the bonus cardboard..?

        • +2

holding the 2 cans together, to make a "2 pack"

    • +1

If you really wanted to get the bonus cardboard then they had a cardboard surround for multiple double packs. I can’t remember if it was three doubles or six?

  • +10

I think OzB's favourite is meant to be the whole peeled ones…. the below is from the 2019 deal.

I use them in place of fresh or canned crushed when cooking all the time.

But regardless, I don't buy anything that is not Mutti anymore. These are goooood!

    • Yeah, I realised that after I posted the deal.

Excuse me whilst I amend the post to cover up that little oversight…

  • +1

Normal price at Coles is $3.40

I normally buy these at $1 per can.

    • -5

      I don't think you're buying 800gram cans for $1 champ.

      • +3

You really are annoying and tiresome.
These are NOT normally $1 per 400g can. Yes we all only buy them when they are $1. That's not normal.
Hell, I normally buy the 60/80c can. They are not the same.

      • +1

You can find these for $1 or less as the normal price from almost any Italian/European grocer.

You can easily bulk buy them for less, too.

These are NOT normally $1 per 400g can

Looks like you don't know how to read.
I did not say they were…

      • Bhahahah.. you can either accept defeat graciously and have a laugh at yourself or be a sourpuss.

      • BBF, you can block specific commenters in settings, usually easier than engaging.

    • Good to know that you know how to get a bargain

  • Does peeled have any advantages over finely chopped

    • +3

yes, at least u can see the quality…
it's hard to tell the quality when it's all minced up

    • Peeled better IMO. I just use my stick mixer to puree them. Takes like 10 seconds.

The best tomatoes for pizza sauce

    • +3

      100%
I just add a teaspoon of salt and half a dozen fresh basil leaves.

      • And some Olive oil 😜

I usually go San Marzano if I can find.

  • -8

I still don't get the popularity of this watery product.

I feel anything above the Black and Gold shelf, so many, many whole, diced or crushed canned tomatoes tastes at least as good as this one after 3 seconds in a blender.

    • Where do you buy pizzas from?

    • +1

I disagree. As someone who has bought both the cheap and expensive (technically Coles substitute 😂) I can say these are definitely better. Has a more rich tomatoey taste.

I just happen to have a stack of Tesco 50c ones from Reject Shop via Doordash atm (that I used a $15 off $20 promo on so effectively free) or I would gladly spend the extra few cents for these.

Oh dear I'm really living up to my name aren't I

      • User name checks out…

…but yeah, the 50c Tesco cans would be the same shelf (or lower) as Black and Gold that I mentioned.

I just can't justify paying $3.40 for two cans of this particular Mutti product. You do, but I don't find it tastes better, and I'd rather use any passata than this blended texture.

        • 50c Tesco cans I've found are better than Coles/Woolies/Black n Gold and probably on par with Aldi/Community N Co.

I can't justify paying $3.40 for 2 cans either, but at $1 each I'm more than happy to.

    • +1

How is it watery. It's 100% crushed tomatoes, not 60% tomato and 40% juice or water

      • I meant the texture. It's blended tomatoes - it's not as thick as passata, nor it has chunks.

I don't know what to do with it - reduce on the stove, so I get passata?
Add it to a soup instead of concentrate, so I can add less water?
Smear on my home-made pizza, so the toppings flow?
        Drink it, for some reason?

        • +6

It's crushed tomatoes, not passata. Why would you expect passata consistency?

      • Mass produced Tomatoes are grown as fast as possible with the right mix of fertiliser and water. They end up powdery and watery whilst lacking any taste. Supermarket tomatoes are like this. Canned produce is usually worse. That’s why the cans can be so watery.

Grow tomatoes yourself at their own slow pace and it’ll be much softer, sweeter and flavoursome. Unless the possums get to it first (pick while green and put on a sunny windowsill to ripen and go red).

        • I do agree on the taste, especially with cherry tomatoes, but my leaves normally go yellow, and the plant dies, before I get a full crop. I can’t grow rosemary either, although my other herbs do alright. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I have them on my balcony with full west sun.

Good deal but I'll stock up when the 790g cans go on sale again for ~$1.70

YASS! Missed the woolies $1/can, so this is timely!

    • +3

There's a Woolies in Yass though? Is it because of the lockdown?

  • +1

I wonder what the most number of cans of these hoarded by an Ozbargainer is.

    • Hoarders hard at work in my local area.. none left

    • +1

I bought 40 once- still going through them!

  • +1

Ardmona ones taste better for me.

  • +10

While eating these tomatoes, I have heard the angels sing. I have felt a loving embrace of my Italian grandma I never had. I have experienced flashbacks of my childhood on a farm in Sicily, even though I have never been to that region of Italy. I have seen the face of God. Life was good.

… And then I have realised these tomatoes must be full of salt, sugar and just the right amount of lysergic acid diethylamide to make me experience all that :)

Would recommend to anyone - best canned tomatoes on the market.

    • And all that for two bucks.

    • Great comment.

Flashbacks to travelling in Italy are so good.

  • How does tomato last few month in can or tin without preservative?

  • None at my local Coles. Will need to have a wander in the city.

    • They restocked I got a bunch of them.
