Sony Bravia 55" 4K HDR UHD LED TV Wi-Fi KD55X8000H $999.99 @ Costco (Membership Required)

750

I saw this deal at Costco Bundamba, QLD today. It seems like a good deal for anyone who is after 55" 4k Sony TV under $1k. I am not sure if this deal is available Australia wide but it appears that it's only available in store and not online.

    "under $1k"

    • Fixed haha

Haha. Wasn't having a dig at the missing $ sign. Just found "under $1k" funny . Technically true.

        • -6

Not really. I doubt when you hand over $1,000 bill to Costco, the checkout chick is going to give you 1c back.

          • +4

@edfoo: They make $1000 bills now? Seriously though hardly anyone uses cash now so most will be paying exactly $999.99

  • +1

    $999.99 classic marketing trick

    • +10

Pay electronically to make sure you don't get penalised a cent.

      • +1

Yep and walk there and back with a trolley so you don't use petrol

    Good for a Japanese brand

    • +1

      That's bad

      • Yep, can’t expect much from an IPS panel.

    • Is that the same TV? X8000H in deal vs X800H in the review. Is that a regional thing or wrong TV? Also for the X800H the review says different panel types are used for different sizes. VA (55, 65) vs IPS.for the 75 they tested.

      • Yeah 800/8000 is essentially interchangeable for Sony TVs, I thinks it's just how they market them vs different regions.

The x9500H here is sold overseas as the x950H

I’ve had this TV for a year and am very happy with it. I use it in a bright open plan living room and it’s still very clear on an angle from the kitchen. It’s very fast and responsive, has both AirPlay and Chromecast built in and runs Android so has all the Apps you’ll ever need. Even the sound is half decent and I haven’t felt the need to buy a sound bar, although I’m no audiophile. Films and sports are great. Streaming services work well too but I have never used it for gaming. Reviews said that in it’s poor in dark rooms and for gaming but neither of those thing impact me so I can’t comment but for my needs it’s perfect, especially at this lower price.

    • Perfectly adequate if you aren’t looking for it’s flaws.

    *for 9000h owners
Sony VRR update have started with China, hopefully soon for other countries.

    • You can download the AP firmware already if you have a hunt in avsforums.

      VRR is at 60hz only….

This was how much I paid for my Panasonic Plasma 55" around 8 years ago, although I had to spend $600 to get it fixed just after it came out of warranty. Hope it will last me another 10-20 years.

      Fantastic story !

      • +2

        Lol do tell us more.

        • +1

Unfortunately, I only have one TV story to tell :)

Actually, the moral of the story is it seems in the last 8 years we just went from one technology to another arguably inferior technology, and the price has stayed exactly the same!

          • @citybargainhunter: Wow who would of thought big major brands still like to make alot of money each year..

inferior like reducing size, power consumption reduced heat no burn in dtv, 4k res, smart yeah sounds pretty inferior 🤦‍♂️

            • @solidussnake: Better on paper perhaps. The one I got was the last gen before Panasonic stopped making Plasma TVs so it's pretty good in terms of power consumption / weight / burn issue etc. The software is also decent but I use a Shield.

Anyway, the real test is to put them side by side and see which one has the better picture quality. I'm tempted to buy this Sony just to do a comparison. :)

              • +1

@citybargainhunter: Was yours made in Japan ?? Probably not if it failed most of those ones would go 20 years lol, I wouldn't compare a plasma to a low end LED LCD, get an OLED and see 4k with HDR, I just got a 77C1 a step up from my 65KS8000 which was edge light was a great panel but light up like an Xmas tree on the sides

10 years ago, I paid $1300 for my Samsung Plasma 50". After 5 years I spent 3 days fixing it, turns out a shorted ceramic cap. Recently, my son saw a baddie on the kids channel and decided to stab it so part of the panel went bonkers. Naturally his ass is also busted. Sorry no happy ending here.. so looking for new screen now.

  • I bought the 43" version of this but returned it because it wasn't possible to connect Bluetooth headphones to it.

Not sure if that's the case with the 55", but just a heads up in case.

  • +1

How does compare to my Sony PVM-14M4E

  • Pretty sure this is the tv I got from Costco 2 years ago or very similar model for 950. The screen started to die recently and took it back.

75 inches minimum 85 inches preferred but not maximum

Still looking for that perfect multi use case pc monitor and console tv.

Avoiding anything with screen burn in potential.

    • Why 75 inches minimum? Is that the rule for the past decade or just a keeping up with the Jones statement?

      • -1

Oh well maybe the Jones statement but basically I have seen and used 50 inches a lot I use 40 inches daily as my pc monitor and have done measurements for my room and downstairs and basically 65 inches is too small to be worth a change unless it sits on my desk so 75 inches is the next bump up to make it worth it to order and move into position and get a desk etc for normal tv viewing and part time pc usage.

It is just what fits ideally in my room atm.

Not a rule or other meant to be offensive statement.

Yeah the top statement I forgot to add note to self or self statement.

Basically I can fit 75 inches to completely cover my window area or the one of few spaces that I have to put a TV.

Any smaller might be awkward aka some glare will come through or will have odd space left over.

Also price wise I feel 65 is the best value but 75 means I have more time to use it before I upgrade to another larger TV etc.

85 inches is pretty much future proof for life until 4k 165hz becomes a thing and gets a lot cheaper then you have other nice upgrades and features you want to aim for like full SRGB etc and other gaming oriented features..

I would love total black uniformity or whatever the correct term is that I am looking for but I am never getting any screen technology with potential burn in risk as I do sometimes leave pc monitor on and might want to keep a static image or background scenery on for long periods of time so unfortunately as good as OLED technology is in a lot of areas I have to skip it due to poor discipline.

I have pretty bad eye sight which is why I opt for larger screens and like to sit a bit back.

Prescription glasses help but larger font or screen is better for me I have found in my lifetime of using screens and different screen or display technologies.

I mean hypothetically I could probably get a 55 or 65 inch tv and be happy just might have to position a bit closer or notice that my full front viewing vision is not covered.

        Yeah.

A decade ago 75 inches was the dream goal to obtain for me personally in a TV or even pc monitor.

But now with 85 inches in grasp technologically and most importantly financially it is a new goal.

In the basement or lower ground level I think wall can hypothetically maybe fit a 200 inch screen to fully cover it but that is insane on IMAX "this is impossible to follow and a huge neck eye everything body level strain" kind of insanity.. so maybe 100-150 inches is ideal if I were to try setup a home theatre / gamer type dungeon lair down there.

        Yeah.

        • Right, you should have said that is a comment only applied to your personal preference and home setup, not to a general statement to everyone else.

          • @edfoo: Yes my bad I must have been rushing or randomly commenting on the train or something or walking.

Aka brain half in brain half out.

My bad my apologies I realise it does seem very generalistic and broadcasty looking back now.

EDIT: oh wow this was posted 10 hours ago.. damn I thought this might have been a brain fart from a week or two ago when I was looking at other large TV's didn't realise this was not even a day or two ago.. wow first memory blackout of the year.

  • Have what I think is the version of this from around 4 years ago (sony TV, same size, price point, 4k etc…). Going strong, would not spend $2-4k like all others in a similar size seem to go for.

The only downside - if it's still the case with this one - is the lack of ability to add apps, so I'm stuck with having to cast certain newer services (eg Disney+) via my phone + chromecast. Minor inconvenience for the saving.

    • I was in the same boat, got a chromecast with google TV and have never looked back, fantastic way to revamp a TV with an older OS

      • Yeah I've been eyeing that off for that exact reason. Got one for my folks and it's pretty awesome, keen to get one for myself

    • +1

This one has access to the full Android app store so I think you must have an older model.

  • I can’t find it. Does anyone have a link?

  • -7

I always watch the first half hour of a movie, pause (regardless of how much I'm actually enjoying the movie),tiktok short clips are more interesting

    • +3

      Um what?

    • +3

You lost me when you said tiktok…

      • He lost me before even that. It's like he had multiple windows opened and accidentally posted to OzBargain rather than some social media platform.

      • Ticktards more like it

  • Is there any 43" model at Costco? I am looking for a sub-$1000 Sony or Samsung TV.

Not a member, but will spend $60 for membership if I could buy a TV cheap.

    • There seems to be a 43" TCL, but I'd rather not buy a CCP brand (privately-owned Chinese brands are OK for me, not government-linked like TCL).
