Nice, too bad for I have no use for steam.

  • +6

damn really need some more fast storage but would much prefer to get a 2TB for my last m2 slot but they are just not great price compared to 1TB yet

  • +2

hardly any deal for 2TB , probably have to wait longer till end of year!

  • +1

Argh, to get this or wait for drops on 2TB for PS5 😫

    • +3

With this you'll have about 1.6TB for PS5 games, then plug in a cheap external SSD for PS4 games. This setup works well for me and I'm happy with it. Since PS5 games are smaller, 1.6TB is a pretty decent amount of space.

I moved all the PS5 games over that I'm interested in playing now or in the near future to my M.2 drive and it still has space left and the built in drive is empty. The external 2TB SSD has a large number of PS4 games installed and a small amount of space left.

      • It's about 1.57TB usable space, you lose 300GB due to the funny units drive manufacturers use.

        • Are you sure? My gigabyte SSD states I have 2.01 TB of storage.
For reference I am using this in my ps5 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/324638013191 (Sale for $372)
Which gets a read speed of 5622mbps (above the ps5 recommendations)

        • That’s ridiculous. Manufacturers gaming the system.

          • @BusMan247: What are you talking about?

You get the full 1.01TB for the M.2 drive, and the internal drive has 667GB with the OS installed. Seems pretty normal to me.

        • Your post has triggered someone, I want to make it clear you get a total of 1.67TB of space if you get a 1TB M.2 drive.

For the M.2 drives you get the full space of 1.01TB or 2.01TB when you plug it in. The internal SSD has 667GB of space available of 825GB with 158GB being used by the OS, not 300GB.

      • So after you install the NVMe expansion drive and if you also have an external hard drive is there now 3 options for where to install games to? I thought the expansion drive capacity might be added to the internal storage capacity. Like a JBOD setup for multiple drives in a PC, where 2 x 1TB drives would be recognised as a single 2TB drive by the operating system.

      • You can also put PS5 games on the external SSD if you want to archive them and then copy them back to the internal/M2 when you want to play them. You wouldn't want to do it a lot but if you have games that you come back to every now and again and don't want to have to download every time…

  • is bps tech eligible for the steam gift card?

Cheapest is from Computer Alliance eBay with coupon code 'PHCET10' - $458.15 + $70 Steam Gift Card

    • -7

You posted one 4 days ago… Pandering for someone else to link it?

      • Their's wasnt Gen 4.

  • +1

Thanks, had been waiting for fast PCIE 4.0 1tb drive for a while and was worried that PS5 changes may have ruined the prices. This is great with the steam voucher included!

    • Can I use for Xbox XS?

      • +1

Nope, well not easily. Some hacks using adapters but yeh haven't researched them too much.

  • +4

Great price on a great SSD (i own one).
But the obsession with the interface speed of SSDs just makes me laugh. I doubt people are copying a single Blueray ISOs back and forth between their PCI-e 4 SSDs…. Any other IO task would make it practically irrelevant.
We got over this on video cards years ago, unfortunately disk IO is a much more complicated topic and i guess understanding the importance of Q1 4K reads is hard?
Its the DRAM-less PCI-e 4 SSDs that make my cry though.

Still miss the MLC NAND 9x0 Pros, though is certainly becoming more irrelevant.

    • +1

Hold on, if you own one, then aren't you part of the same group of people obsessed with the interface speed? Actually, to be honest, it's more cannot suppress the urge to buy the new toy after reading the reviews or watching youTube review videos. Or, unlike other people, you do have some legit use cases for getting the SSD?

MLC SSDs, most people aren't buying them. MLC cannot beat SLC cache and with random read/write speed not getting better. Controller improvement also has a lot to do with it (and the marketing). Also, if PCIe gen 4 is an overkill for most people, MLC SSDs aren't? This other OZBers buying toys are dumb assumption is something which I am quite surprised (and honestly don't get). Give other OZBers some credit.

There is a surge in demand on PCIe gen 4 SSDs because of PS5. Otherwise, most OZBers wouldn't waste money on these. DRAM-less PCI-e 4 SSDs - well, those are priced below PCI-e gen 3 flagship NVMe SSDs (with DRAM) and PS5 appears to allow them. Both Series X and PS5's internal SSDs are DRAMless. The reality if the difference is $20 for a cost cutting 1TB PCI-e gen 3 DRAMless SSD vs a 1TB PCI-e gen 4 DRAMless SSD (which still has better NAND than the cost cutting PCI-e gen 3 one), you might as well buy the PCI-e gen 4 one.

You might miss MLC SSDs, but I would be very surprised if you also miss the extra premium Samsung charges on those. Also, I am sure most people can easily feel the difference between MLC SSDs and TLC SSDs, not to mention Samsung's first gen PCIe NVMe MLC SSD has a higher failure rate, with thermal protection kicks in quite early.

      • Well that certainly escalated….

Ive owned all the samsung consumer SSDs, PCI-E 4 was never a defining factor for my purchase and i think you know that.
They have great controllers and NAND. Im not suggesting anyone not buy this (in fact you should), it just makes me giggle reading the comments in all the 4.0 SSD threads, ive seen it hundreds of times over the 20 years when it comes to interface speeds. Every time i think we are past it, it kicks off again. Nothing against you or OB.

I said separately i personally miss MLC, also that its practically irrelevant for most, nothing to do with my other observations.

I wasnt aware PCI-E 3.0 SSDs didnt work in a PS5, seems odd, but i dont own one.

    • +6

I think i can speak for most here that OZBs purchasing decisions have nothing to do with the marketing or even utility of the item.
It's about how spicy the deal is.

  • +2

Can someone recommend a heatsink to go with this for PS5? Cheers.

    • Seems that most are either out of stock or shipping from china with long delivery times, but I bought this one the other day and am hoping it arrives pretty quick https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234150178803

I also only paid $12.59 for that item so it seems they have bumped up their prices, but you could probably go any of the other listings in the recommended list on that page that are cheaper and still apparently aus stock.

      • Thanks mate. I am thinking of getting this one. It can be delivered roughly the same time as the SSD.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283936670310

        • I saw that one in my searches, but I noticed that it uses rubber bands to hold it secure to the SSD and I read a few sources online saying to avoid any that use rubber bands as they have a very limited lifespan given that the bands will weaken and break with time.

          • @XVX: Thanks for the heads up mate.

  • Thanks! Good price!

  • Cheers OP, grabbed one :) Good value with the $40 Steam card

  • +1

Best price yet for a very good ps5 compatible drive. Note it doesn’t run as well on ps5 as it’s actually rated for but it’s still above recommend specs.

    • +1

Its actually to do with a bug in software when they did the official release. In the Beta I was getting readings in the 6300s and since official release dropped to 5600.

  • Damnit, just spent $239 for this yesterday.

  • +2

They increased the price to $245 now (before discount), still cheaper from shallothead & gg.tech365 though.

    • Updated.

BPC Tech still cheaper than shallothead/gg.tech365 after the price increase.

$208.25 from BPC Tech vs $211.65 from shallothead/gg.tech365

"A seller made some changes to an item listing."….Catfish price hike

  • shame samsung downgraded these to TLC compared to the 970 pro

  • Paid a few bucks more and got it from gg.tech365. Ordered a CPU from them with the 22% ebay code last time and it arrived via express post from Sydney to Perth in 2 days.

The last month, something was sent to me by regular post from Melbourne and it took about 3 weeks!

what’s a good heatsink to go with this for ps5?

    • See my post above.

    • I had to cancel this order because of bad review.

"For the avoidance of doubt, online bidding and auction websites (e.g. www.ebay.com.au) are not Participating Stores for the purposes of the Promotion."

the redemption conditions listed on samsung, not sure how they treat these ebay stores

    • You can request an actual store invoice from the seller (ie. BPC Tech) and use that for the redemption.

  • Got this for PS5, moved 100pgig from internal to it in 60 sec. Blazing. Got a cheap ebay heatsink for $7….fits a treat inside bay with lid on. Bonza!

  • +1

Obviously market forces are starting to work.

I’m literally waiting until 2TB is at least under $200. I just can’t accept spending half my console cost on a memory card I don’t care how fast the load times are. Everyone’s different but I know from experience (I’m old) they’re going to milk all the must haves with sub par tech at top tier prices- then when they have all splurged we will see that 8000MB/s drives are released to get the remaining folk. Watch and learn!

    • The 1gig is surprisingly spacious being added onto the internal.

    • +1

You mention the cost of your console, but fail to recognise a lot of the hardware costs are subsidised by Sony themselves. You must take into account the money you pay Sony every time you buy a game for $130, where the total cost of your console becomes more apparent. These drives a primarily marketed towards the PC market, where you are already spending $1500-$2000.

      • -3

Cool story. Let me know next year when I pick up a 2TB for $150 how this post ages.

        • History would say otherwise.

    • Not a partipating store for Samsung Steam Gift Card redemption.

  • My timing is impeccable… paid $239 yesterday. FFS.

  • +1

Still waiting for mine. It was marked as express post but BPC sent it using regular parcel post.

  • Any idea how to access the steam wallet? I got approved on the 20th but haven't received any communication on it on how to use the wallet/vouchers?

    • Have you received the redemption code from Samsung?

If so, you can "Add funds to your Steam Wallet". There should be a "Redeem A Steam Card or Wallet Code" once you log-in.

      • No I had to login to my Samsung account which says it's been approved, but there's been no emails from Samsung other than redemption submitted.

        • Same here, waiting for the code myself.

Been approved since mid-October, but no email/response since.

          • @RichardL: Ok thanks, maybe that's normal then. I've replied to the submitted email to inquire on next steps.

            • @pennyless: I sent an email to [email protected] on Monday, and just received the following response:

              Dear customer,

Thanks for taking part in our promotion.

We apologise for the delay in the voucher code.

We will get this over to you shortly.

            • @pennyless: Just received my codes.
