      • Yep my bad. First time I have ever bought a PC with an AMD processor and definitely the last time….

        • +7

AMD isn't bad, far from it. In fact AMD currently possess the best in both gaming and productivity with the Ryzen 5000 series. The CPU in your computer is ancient from before Ryzen was released and was just trash before it even released hence why you should always ask if you don't know much about something.

        • +2

Sadly even when that CPU was not obsolete it was low end budget and was definitely long out of date when you bought it. AMD make arguably the best CPUs in a lot of areas, so don't let the fact you were conned into buying old stock put you off. I had been intel for decades, currently my 3 main machines are all and 5000 series or 3000 series for both gaming and work.

  • +1

I updated and it's working well for me. The integration with my Android phone seems a lot more refined so that's nice.

I do miss one thing though - the ability NOT to combine apps on the task bar.

  • saw some articles on issues with Ryzen and memory leaks on explorer. did anyone notice such issues ?

    • Yeah my 4500u Lenovo e14 gamed slower

  • i'm never going to downgrade to 11, i'll probably switch to linux, hopefully at that point gaming is much better supported on linux but if it isn't it's not a deal breaker. i'm sick of windows.

not to mention that even if i wanted to upgrade, my machine isn't supported despite being only 2 years old with new, high performance hardware.

    • you might just need to enable TPM in bios

    • +1

I still haven't downgraded from DOS.

Everything after DOS went downhill with all of the overheads needed for a GUI and bloatware.

  • +2

took all of two hours after tpm enabled, including download time. Seems to be slightly faster… They seemed to have worked on having it install seamlessly.

  • I'm just waiting for the day that my Win10 auto updates to Win11 whilst I'm asleep (despite pausing updates time and time again)… it wouldn't be the first time Micro$oft rolled out an update and it messed up my desktop / settings.

Woke up one day and found my gaming PC wallpaper (and numerous other settings) was suddenly replicated across my other 4 PCs… I was like wtf Micro$oft! Just 'cause I'm using 1 account, doesn't mean I want them all with the same settings.

    • +8

Like that time apple users woke up with the new U2 album installed.

      • i tried to upvote you but i cant

    • It synced. You can turn that off

Just thought I'd post a screenshot of my desktop under Windows 11.
For a giggle to raise the "It's a Mac" level to 11.
Take care and embrace the centre. Taskbar that is !! 😁

  • I've been fairly happy on my 3770k @ 4.5ghz stable until now as it caps out my 1070 with ease. I was and still am waiting for DDR5 and the next gen but this is just insulting; my P8Z77-V doesn't even a TPM header, so out goes the chance for even 1.2 let alone 2.0. In order to get an alternative 1155 board but with 4 dimm's, TPM 2.0 and similar or better support for overclocking and voltage support is crazy expensive if not near impossible, it almost makes it cheaper to just upgrade entirely but that would also be stupid in today's market. Even if I did somehow get to 1.2 i'd still be gimped by the now increased 2.0 requirement and cpu compatibility lockout (which can be bypassed of course).

I can't be the only one in this pseudo exile that is TPM land, sure, I can use the bypasses and such but then I already have to give up windows defender, potential for updates and potentially the ability to use game changing upgrades like direct storage support and all the good reasons to upgrade.

The lure of the new & fancy UI and snappier responsiveness is so heartbreaking though.

  • Been on it since they moved it from the dev channel to beta channel.

0 problems so far, day to day usage all fine

  • +1

I think windows 10 is enough, there's no reason for Windows 11.

Computer parts will be cheaper under Windows 10, and even if you run business you'd migrate to Linux anyways, so windows 11's not even gonna do it(given the licencing fee's you'd be paying for) it's just for twitch streamers to get the next craze with all their money on new parts.

If there's a specific software you cannot run on Linux like some daw, or work station software you need windows 10's good enough for 5 years, and right now with the series X simplicity microsoft will have a hell of a time convincing people (the capitalism idoms) on why you should convert and upgrade to the pc for gaming alone when people do what they thinks best for them.

Screw that I say think with your wallet, unless CPU's fall In price it's Microsofts decision to pitch for us all, given they created this fiasco.

    • have a hell of a time convincing people (the capitalism idoms) on why you should convert

Isn't it free, as in steals your data?

  • +1

I've already upgraded. Can recommend. It's cleaner and fonts display better especially on a 4k HDR monitor. This alone is reason to upgrade.

  • I will use windows again until M$ completely fix the context menu inconsistency .

  • +2

I'm running Arch with KDE Plasma why on earth would I install Microsoft's spyware?

    • My thoughts exactly

  • I would but for some reason MS decided my CPU (i7-6700k) would not be supported for Win11. Still can't get why to be honest 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • -8

      intel is mac
      amd is windows

      • +3

What are you on about mate

        • -3

          Just ignore them.
          They are being a clown

  • +1

I'm running; mac laptop, w11 gaming pc (i7-8700), w10 work laptop
nothing wrong with the w11 install so far, games and progs run fine (nothing broken so far). Some new features I like and missing ones are annoying (like others have mentioned above)

Overall I feel pretty neutral about the change tbh, but I like the way w11 is taking things (aesthetics).

  • +2

I will wait for JB to re-open and then play with Windows 11 there.

  • Eventually. Won't go out of the way to get it. Maybe when I upgrade hardware and need to reformat.

Can't wait for the 3 versions of Control Panel/Settings/?

  • Already did and it's great, haven't had a single problem.

  • I'll need to upgrade the computer first unfortunately.
Otherwise, yep. Back in the day I had Windows 7 signature edition early.

    • Back when there was proper beta testing!

  • Updated my desktop this afternoon. Working well, and no complaints so far. Only issue I ran into was setting up Windows Hello facial recognition during set-up. I ended up just skipping the step and setting it up from within Windows later.

Will move the laptop to it when it gets pushed as well.

  • +1

I've done 2 in place upgrades on supported hardware and a clean install on an unsupported 7th Gen NUC

    Working flawlessly on all devices.

The new snap zones are great, and the virtual desktops have been amazing now that we're WFH. I don't have to worry about alt tabbing or sharing the wrong screen when I'm watching pr0n.

  • +2

Where's the "Already Upgraded" poll option ;)

  • I will upgrade in 2026 because my PC is part of how I earn my living. If I buy a new device with Win11 already on it, so be it.

  • -2

When it's stable and cheap enough. i don't want anymore bsod than what's absolute necessary.

    • It's free? Are you going to wait until they start paying you to use it?

      • pricing can change in future. when windows 10 was introduced it too was free for a while. i’m not jumping ship from a stable experience with win 10 to a hot mess just because it’s free. 21H1 almost bricked my installation and took me like a day to fix it.

  • If you had a Raspberry Pi with https://pi-hole.net/ you actually noticed that not Google or Facebook but Microsoft is the (profanity) that track you the most through window 10. Window 11 will be an upgrade of invading your personal data

  • Already have on a Surface Pro 6. Slick, fast, neat layout, zero bugs to report, no regrets. Don't miss the tiled layout at all

  • Yes ASAP

  • To everyone (rightfully) complaining about taskbar combining and other taskbar issues - here you go! https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher

I have already upgraded few days ago.

Windows 7 was the last good Microsoft OS. Win 10 is significantly more annoying. In an ideal world, Windows 7 would have been upgraded with new drivers (USB3, NVME, etc) + DirectX 12. Windows 2000 and XP were also great at the start of the millennium.

  • Over the years have had multiple computers that still continue work. So the answer is 'eventually'. In the meantime I'll continue to use my Linux, Mac, Windows XP, 7,10 machines.

Old laptops and desktops still run Linux fine and Windows 7 fine. If you spend just a bit on maxing out RAM and SSDs these machines life can be extended quite a bit. I do know about the screams from gamers and 'creators' but you'll have your really good machine for that. For most people Office, Email, Internet has run the same for a long time (try an old version of Office and compare to what you have now, do you really do anything different or advanced between the two?)

TBH I think Windows 11 is mostly a clean up under the hood and some new interface concepts. The way it's rolling out and the TPM headaches (or machine not good enough for Windows installer) is making this release a bit of a Windows Vista. MS should really make this part seamless otherwise alot of people will upgrade when they buy their next machine or Windows 12.

  • +1

Why would you wait till 2025? Odds are windows 12 is already out and maybe windows 13 around 2026.

  • +1

Yes, I got more machines than people so no problems using a spare machine to test it out. New tech and software kinda gets me excited.

  • +1

in my personal pc yes. Work environment? don't think and will take years again. I work in healthcare and i still see shit running at windows xp lol

I have seen NOTHING in all the twice annual updates of Windows 10 that improved it in any way. The updates have just been a large nuisance. Yes, they probably needed to update to detect and deal with more recent security threats, but that could have been done the way it was in Windows 7, with updates to the necessary software components.

Microsoft just keeps making changes to prevent users users using THEIR computer the way THEY want. I think Microsoft has completely lost the plot in terms of understanding what their users want. They seem to be listening to the few "insiders" who are enthusiasts and professionals who want absolute best security, not the many who are just ordinary users who want convenience.

Windows 11 forces users to do a secure login. If you only have Home edition it forces you to have a Microsoft account. Its just a pain in the backside to most people who want their computer to turn on and come back from sleep working. Windows 11 will create a great opportunity for everyone else to go to Windows 10 on their computers, set them up the way they want, and not have to put up with twice yearly updates.

  • I remember Windows 7 to Windows 10 there were pop ups and stuff asking if I want to update. I haven't seen that for Windows 11 are they still rolling it out or is it just 'beta' at the moment?

  • +1

Currently using Windows 11, was relatively effortless to upgrade. The main differences appear to be cosmetic with rounded windows, the start menu, Settings etc. Some things are slightly annoying, like not being able to right click the taskbar to bring up task manager.

    • Some things are slightly annoying, like not being able to right click the taskbar to bring up task manager.

Agreed and the right click on folders + files is different, that is a bit of an annoying one.

  • Running it on my work desktop and laptop, love it. I upgraded my laptop first which was easy to do and was a bit unsure. Used it for a few hours and loved it. Took a bit to upgrade my desktop and well worth it. A few little things to get used to, but otherwise I like it.

  • Dont see the point, oh the start menu in the middle now like apple?

    Take my apathy

    • You can adjust this to be left aligned.

  • TPM was straight forward enough - but I still have to convert from MBR to GPT for the secure boot gains.

    • It’s doable there’s a few guides out there on what to use and retain data

  • Already done it, works fine.

  • Ill give it a go, if it sucks Ill format and go back to 10

  • Yes when I get new hardware. Windows 11 will receive CPU optimisations to improve multicore scheduling which may not be provided for Windows 10

  • +1

Using Zorin and Mint Linux exclusively for work and everyday stuff. Windows on my gaming laptop only. I'll upgrade to windows 11 when I'm prompted I guess.

    • Zorin

gonna try this new distro, my favourite was "Mandrake" but it is now discontinued.

      • Feren, Zorin, Mint… All good.

        • thanks mate!

  • Anyone know if you need to login a MS account when you upgrade from Windows 10 with a local account?

    • +2

No. You can still use local / offline accounts

      • Good to hear, thanks

  • Needs an option for I can't because the hardware is not supported

    • See option "No, not until windows 10 expires in 2025 (?)" :D

      • What if I have the same computer in 2025?

      • unless gaming, a lot of hardware from a couple of years ago will still be snappy

      • Which really, is still a yes.

A more accurate way to put that option is "yes, in 2025 when windows 10 isn't supported"

  • Moved to ubuntu 1 year back!! Works like a charm.

  • Apt timing on this thread. I run a small IT business and thought I'd switch my desktop / laptop over to it today just to get familiar with any gripes that I might encounter.

So far so good, some weird UI choices like the worlds most gigantic start menu. There is a registry change available for that though at least.

Don't love the context menu in explorer being mostly hidden until you choose another option as I'm too used to 7zip being there. (I know i can re-enable it)

Disappointed in window management options and still using displayfusion but need to look into this further incase I'm missing something.

Don't really have any actual issues just yet at least. It's stable enough.

  • I upgraded day one. don't have any issues that people are talking about, it runs better than what windows 10 did. I have AMD ryzen 7 5800X and 6600 XT with 32gb ddr 4 ram, plus thunderbolt 3, wifi 6 +bluetooth m.2 card from intel.

I am assuming people that have the issues have older hardware. but for me easy no issues.

  • I bought a new Dell desktop and while setting it up it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to Windows 11 and I said yes.

Would love to do a format and fresh install of windows. How can I do it?

Where would I get the license key

    • No need for a fresh install.

  • maybe when for my next pc once gpu prices are reasonable

    • You'll be able to load Windows 12 by then!

  • I did a clean install on day one of release. I'm happy with it.

  • +1

    i force installed it last night. i have a older PC ( i7 4790k )
so had to do the workaround.
a nicer, cleaner interface i liken to it leaning more towards Mac os in that regard
my lightroom/photoshop seems to be working a bit snappier.
i like how you can split the window panes and organize the desktop if you have a bunch of things open
might hook PC up to my LG tv to see how the xbox style auto hdr works

  • +1

I've been using Windows 11 since day 1 release and I love it. I have it installed on my main gaming machine (which I really only use for FFXIV) and my old gaming laptop (in which the CPU wasn't supported, but I bypassed that check anyway)

I love everything about Windows 11, except the taskbar right-click option doesn't have a quick action to go to Task Manager, but the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc still works fine and is my usual go to anyway.

It took me 10 minutes to get used to the new right-click actions on files (where copy/paste/cut/delete are all now icons)

I was easily able to do everything I needed in the settings app without needing to go to Control Manager. Windows 11 feels like what Microsoft wanted Windows 10 to be.

The only problem I'm having is that I can no longer RDP into my computer, I can access the lock screen, but then I have to enter my password and it keeps telling me it's incorrect, despite the fact I know it is correct. I've just switched to TeamViewer, which is far better anyway.

    • I just pinned the Task Manager app to start, and it's easy enough to get to.

  • +2

Microsoft has a long record of providing a great Windows version, followed by a terrible one.

95 was great, 98 was a let down
2000 was great, ME should never be spoken of.
XP was great, Vista was awful
7 was great, 8 was terrible
10 is their best ever, 11 looks like a third-party skin

I'm going to hold out for the next version and let the early adopters gloat about their specs and complain about changes.

    • 2000 was the upgrade to NT, and ME was the upgrade to 98, but otherwise, true enough.

      • it isn't really all that accurate. as you point out those two were just updates. Vista and 7 are basically identical products, the only difference being in the name and a slight toning down of the security prompts coupled with hardware manufacturers having time to fix their broken drivers to being more stable (yet one gets branded as awful and the other great even though they are essentially the same). When 10 was first out people were also saying the opposite of the above and that it was the worst Ever and they would be sticking with 7, for Vista and 7 they would be sticking with XP forever etc, people aren't good with change.

        • people aren't good with change.

oddly enough this seems to mostly apply to windows. macOS, iOS & Android releases are met with enthusiastic fanfare

          • -1

@dny: most users never see a new android release except on a new device as oems don't generally update. macOS actually has suffered some of the same as does iOS but in that camp their really is no alternative option and they also have a core fan base that Apple could literally take a dump on and they would say thank you.

  • +1

No. My laptop doesn't have a tpm module. Not even that old. Seems like a stupid requirement.

  • I'll sit on win10 til some more devs start announcing native linux compatibility then i'll ditch windows.

  • Already have

  • only if offered for free

    • It is free if you are running 10
