      • Which store?

      • Did either of you pick up an extra charger for the second battery to prevent having to remember to switch them over? I got the blower too so was looking at the battery/charger combo for $40 but the battery is only 2ah. The picture on the box has a 2ah battery so “should” be ok.

I already had a charger and 2 large size 4ah batteries, which was handy as new ones died after doing half my area. Having a second charger will be very useful I think

          • @Western Hornet: 2 4ah died half way through!? How big is your yard? If it doesn’t do the front and back of my house on one charge I’d be pissed.

@iShibby: If you can do mow and blow on one charge then you don't really need a 2nd charger.

              • @BellaWii: I was thinking the same thing but if the guy above’s comment is anything to go by I might not get the whole job done on 1 charge :(

                • @iShibby: The battery come 54% charged. May of not charged it before use.

              • @BellaWii: Would also be nice to charge the batteries at the same time so I don’t have to try and remember to switch them over. Can you leave the batteries in the charger 24/7? I do with my 8 year old black and decker line trimmer and the battery is still good.

                • @iShibby: I've forgotten and left it charging for a week, doesn't seem to affect the batteries. I think the charger has some smarts to know to stop charging. Get a 4ah battery for your blower, the 2ah seem to last less than half of a 4ah and keep the mower batteries separate, try not to mix them up with your blower battery. I label mine so I know which pair are for 2 x 18V tools and which are for 18V tools.

                  • @BellaWii: Problem is a 4ah battery is $50, not far off the cost of the blower itself

            • +1

@iShibby: It’s a big area but the grass was also long. Think battery life will be much better if I stay on top of the grass and cut it more often

              • @Western Hornet: Didn't really get to try the mower. I had mowed the lawn on Friday. Due to the mower being very light, it might not work well when the grass is too tall. It is so compact and light, I keep it on top of my petrol mower.

  • didn't need it but bought it. it seems mower skin costs only 109 $ which is not bad. if bought separately the 2 battery and one charger would cost 120$.

Wanted the 8ah battery from this deal but both stores that I went to didn't have any in stock and the stock checker says no stores have any stock. Still bought the 4ah battery and took it apart to find Samsung 21700 40T cells.

    • Is that good or bad?

      • Very good, Samsung cells are high quality and at this price point batteries usually have lower quality cells.

        • Hey mate in your teardown what did you see regarding the balancing as TRRR also asks below?

Thinking of forking out for the 8Ah whenever it's available to use in the power hungry saws (hoping the BMS doesn't current limit it too low too) but it'd cost more than the tools itself so yeah I'd want some longevity in it.

          • @dufflover: The batteries are all linked to together like normal and at the linkages between cells are nickel strips going to the bms, I believe that is cell balancing as the bms has access to all individual cells for the single row 4ah 21700 pack.

The 4ah 18650 battery pack is 5s2p meaning there are 5 sets of 2 paralleled cells, these have balance strips like the 21700 version except since there are 2 cells per row it can't balance each individual cell only 2 at a time if that was what TRRR was referring to.

I assume the 8ah battery will be wired the same as the 18650 version just with different cells so there is only balancing for each set of 2 cells.

Would like to buy the 8ah battery but the aldi's in my area still don't have them.

            • @Jamay18: No the 18650 ones didn't have balancing, as in there were no electrical connections from the middle cells back to the board for it to be able to measure the voltages of the intermediate rows/cells. It only had a +ve/-ve from the whole cell pack to the board for the whole 18V. So if there are now connections from each "row" running to the board then that would imply yes they've added it this time. Thanks for the info!

@dufflover: Bought the 8ah today and can confirm it has the exact same bms as the 4ah 21700 pack.

  • So being a larger cell's the packs aren't actually the same size as a 2AH. But they are still quite compact.

As above, Samsung INR21700 40T's, which is excellent.

I have some data from capacity testing - mine did 3846mAH at 1C as expected. Intenal resistance, sub 100. So not bad.

One interesting thing though - the pack is longer forward of the contacts , and whilst this doesn't seem to affect fitment of any of my existing tools that i've tried so far - one it does is the 5-in-1 trimmer power head.. you can't clip the battery all the way in. It bottoms out before it can latch. oopsie.

    • Do the new packs have cell cell balancing? A big weakness with the aldi 18650 packs in that they don't have balance wires going to each cell that will shorten lifetime

  • Picked couple of 8.0AH batteries last night and to my surprise they don't fit into my aldi lawn mower and into aldi chainsaw. Are just too big to fit into the battery slots. Contacted aldi and they apologized and advised to return the batteries.

    • Someone on Ozb will take them off your hands!
