MacBook Pro: 14" 8-Core CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD $2658.70; 16" 10-Core $3311 @ Apple On Campus (e.g. Australian Education Union)

2660

Cheaper deal than the previous Edu store deal as there's tier 2 discounts available. Never had issues/checks ordering from the Uni stores but as always, ymmv.

Great to see MagSafe is back and 120hz is a huge get as well!

  • Amazing price given they’ve just launched!

  • How do I choose which Macbook to buy? My use case is regular office work - spreadhseets, ppts, some coding (mobile app development, python), occasional photo editing. I suppose picking the pro 14" or 16" would be futureproofing my use cases?

    • +10

save literally a few thousand and get a base M1 air lol

no offence, your workflow is nowhere near ‘pro’

      • Thats what I thought. What is the usecase(s) for the pro?

        • +2

anything limited by CPU threads, GPU or RAM

remember that the normal M1 flies through most tasks but you only have max 16gb ram and 8 cores….M1 pro/max is just extra cores

you will know if you need a pro

i personally am picking one up as my workflow in Logic Pro is highly CPU dependent and I’ll take all the threads i can get.

        • M1 will be good enough.

        • Primarily serious amount of large photo editing (wedding), 4K video editing and rendering. 3D modelling and rendering, Audio editing with large amount of plugins and effects etc….

    • +2

If you are asking this question, do you really need the new MBP 14 or 16?

Unless you are a big content creators (and with minimum 4K/60 video workflow) and/or doing a lot of heavy development work (and finding your current MBPs way slow), you are buying MPB M1 Pro / Max 14/16 because you simply cannot resist this new greatest set of toys of 2021.

External displays play a fairly big part of this, which is basically the wake up call for me. Sure, the single external display for M1 was a big issue for some people. Now, with M1 Pro, we are looking at up to 3 external displays (+ 1 more for HDMI). I only have 1 external display that's capable of 120Hz+ and I only have 4K/60Hz displays. As much as I would love a laptop that blows my Ryzen 3700X away, it is really an overkill for me.

If you can afford one and really want one, then sure, get one.

    • +4

You will find that that the M1 MacBook Air will do everything you need, if you want to future proof, get the 16GB memory.

You have the added benefit of crazy battery life, lighter weight, and NO fan noise ever.

I upgraded everyone at my office to M1 Air comptuters, it's amazing how nice it is to never hear fans from computers. I have people using their machines for 4k video editing, photo editing, typical office tasks, coding and no one has ever found that their machines weren't up to the task. These Pro machines are nice, the screens will be out of this world, but at the same time 1000 nits is actually too bright to look at all day, most people indoors don't want to have a screen brighter than 4-500 nits if you're going to use it all day. The 1000 nits is for people creating HDR content.

      • +1

The M1 MBAs you purchased for people in your office. Are they 16GB or 8GB ones? Do you recommend getting the 16GB RAM model over the 8GB one?

        • +1

Most are 8GB models, one person opted to pay the difference and get the 16GB model - I haven't had a single complaint yet about the 8GB models.

If you think you might end up doing lots of video editing in resolutions above 4k, I'd get the 16gb model. If you aren't then the 8GB models are amazing.

We changed our workflow, we use an app called Spark for our email and calendars now because Google apps in the cloud use about 1GB per tab it's hilarious. Spark uses about 300mb and it's running 3 email accounts for me lol But some people are still using Google apps from the browser and no one has any issues.

If your Mac needs to use swap the storage on these machines is crazy fast because it's baked into the SOC so it's not really a huge problem.

    • If you’re keeping it for 5 years then think seriously what you will be using for in the future. I’d rather pay too much for an over spec’d machine than too little than have to deal with something too gimped for 5 years. So the AOC discount brings the differential down to around $600 odd dollars for which you get a bigger promotion screen and a more power chipset. Maybe wait for a discounted giftcard and 10% off salemake it more affordable. To the average income earner thats merely two days pay. On that basis its worth stretching your budget to be happy for 5 years with decent resale value. I don’t see the M1 MBA holding their value next year if Apple do release a redesigned MBA and frankly the M1 MBP don’t really make a lot of sense now.

    • Depends on if you want the 120hz mininled screen.
If not, the MBP m1 or even the Air, with 16gb ram would give you the future proofing you need.
Don't get 8gb unless you plan to replace it pretty quickly.

  • +2

Been planning on getting a MacBook + docking station and using a portable desktop. These new pros look really nice, but I'm struggling to justify the extra money over just getting an Air. I don't do any graphics design, 3D modelling and (obviously) little gaming, so I'm struggling to see the benefit apart from pro motion and magsafe.

    • +4

These M1 Pro, M1 Max laptops are really for professionals. 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports, I cannot even afford 1 Thunderbolt 3 display. The unreal ProRes encoding / decoding hardware acceleration, that's for Pro's with 5K, 6K workflow (not that I even own a 5K external display nor a DSLR/video cam capable of 5K). The Pro Motion retina display, very nice, but for work laptops, 16 inch is still 16 inch. The main issue for most people is that if we don't have the necessary gears to really benefit from these laptops, getting these will mostly be for bragging.

However, if you use a laptop a lot and really want that unreal display, then I guess that's a fair reason to get one.

    • +4

Your assumption is correct, these new displays and the extra power is only really going to benefit people making 5k+ HDR content etc. I already edit 4k videos in Resolve on my Air and it's crazy good at it. Do I wish I had the pro motion - YES, do I wish that I had MagSafe - YES - but I paid for $1400 for this Air lol, so my wishing goes away when I price up the new machines :)

      • +2

Good to hear. Definitely reaffirms my decision to save the cash and go for the Air.

  • Hi guys:
    1. I know many mentioned Apple doesn't verify, but I'm curious to know if TAFE students qualify for buying from AOC Edu store?
    2. Will the invoice show anything about Edu store?

    • Um… I thought while Apple normally doesn't verify, on occasions, they do?

      1. Per a previous comment by someone else, no.
  • Can we expect further discount from the edu store for MacBook Pros, for Black Friday sale?

    • +2

Considering these are going to be selling like crazy for the next 12 months and the supply chain problems I would guess that Apple will actually not want to discount these at all on Black Friday.

    • Not from edu store, but it will be interesting to see what Amazon could do later on (or Costco or JB). However, probably for the base models.

  • Not buying but +1 for tip off about AOC Education Store.

  • I don't understand why would they include a HDMI port if it's not 2.1???

    • +2

Simple, because Apple current lineup are USB-C/Thunderbolt based displays. Clearly, Apple doesn't want to support HDMI 2.1 because that would allow other devices (cough… PCs) to use their displays.

For displays, monitors supporting HDMI 2.1 would also support DisplayPort 1.4 (so it isn't really an issue, just either need a special cable or dongle). That said, Apple wants you to go Thunderbolt 3/4 instead of USB-C/alt-mode.

The main issue is 8K TV or 4K 120Hz TV support. It is a technical decision really. If you can only wire 3 main external displays, it is technically better to go 3 Thunderbolt ports. As for TVs, well, Apple currently wants to sell you their Apple TV boxes and services.

  • straight bangs on MacBook? Seriously?

  • -5

Lol this thread, 3k for a new computer looks like the new avocado toast is mbp's that or everyone is a Google simp aka YouTuber haha. That's a lot of coin for a laptop, and all the justification of over 5 years is hilarious what so in the next year or 2 when it goes from 10 to 16 core and 32 to 64 gpu what then, mba 8cpu 7gpu mbp 10 CPU 32 gpu is quite a jump. Makes you wonder what the desktop versions will be given they don't have power delivery limitations. Looks shiny not worth 3k+

    • +1

Depends if you need portable power. If so it's the most power you're gonna get in a portable machine. For me I don't need that much power, so I got the Air, and it's fantastic. It's more power than I need in a really nice package. But yeah $3 is a lot of money - but it is damn powerful… I think most people don't need that power though.

    • These are for professionals, so they will be able to justify the purchases (work expenses). It's not that expensive for them. With all the features making the professionals and high end youTubers happy, there will certainly be a lot of rave reviews. Can general public resist them? Also, will Intel, nVidia and AMD offer more significant performance jump in the next generation of products? Are they going to carry hefty price tags?

A lot of organisations will be getting them for their staff. Maybe not right away, but will eventually.

    • +1

Yeah, I don't get it either mate. I bought a 2017 MB air for $350 last year. It's brilliant, still has all the ports on the sides (no dongles), battery lasts all day. I can't see a 10x better product here. But hey, I'm just a pleb income earner, so horses for courses.

  • +1

I'm still waiting for my mid2013 mbp to die, so i can upgrade to the latest one… I shouldn't have upgraded it to ssd, now its perfect again.

    • Screw driver through the screen.
"Sorry hunny, i need to get the new one, this one just died".

    • hire a contract killer.

  • doesnt look like Cashrewards work with this site? Only edu portal.

    • +1

yeah I tried earlier to coax it over to the AOC store but it wouldn't do it, the AOC discount is deeper than the edu+1.5% combined anywho

  • +2

In preparation for this, I signed up to a new CC with 150k Qantas points (pending minimum spend in first 2 months) a fortnight ago, then used that card today to purchase 5 Apple gift cards on one flybuys account, then another 3 on my partners flybuys account, then pre ordered the new MacBook using the 1.5% cashback link via CashRewards. Do I win an OzB award?

    • Almost, the cash rewards edu store costs more than the AOC, but otherwise that sounds like a huge gain

      • +1

Showed the same for me… Hrmm. Will see if my CW tracks, but I paid A$6,421.80 with Max, 64GB and 4TB

        • Oooh very interesting, let us know if it tracks!

        • +1

What do you need that kind of grunt for?

          • @[Deactivated]: Professional photographer and videographer. Not uncommon for me to take a 2 hour timelapse, with 3-bracketed shots every 5 seconds, then auto stack them in LR and auto-HDR every image before exporting them as a sequence and dumping them into PPro to produce an 8K timelapse for clients…

            • +2

@Buz1986: Oh cool, photographer. I have a camera phone too.

              • @[Deactivated]: Some of the things I shoot, I'm not allowed to take my camera phone into :(

            • @Buz1986: Do you have a website where you host your photos? cheers

        • Planning on taking over the world with that config? That's epic.

          • +2

@bunnybash: Nah, just need a setup that wont let me down when timing is critical. eg - I shoot a hero shot of the winning try at a professional sports game and need to be the first photographer to get it online so media agencies grab it straight away… I have started testing out a technique where I video in 8K as the players approach the try-line to score, then screen grab the exact frame that I need. More chance of the perfect shot then firing off 12fps and hoping you got the specific moment without losing focus.

            • @Buz1986: That's pretty cool. Having the latest and greatest really does pay for itself then or at least makes your life easier. Make sure you get some good shots of the winning try when the Raiders win the grand final 2022 :)

            • @Buz1986: Just out of interest is there a reason why need 8k, if it's online and TV or even newspaper, legit curious??

              • +1

@RBZ10: An 8k video file will allow you to screen grab a photo that is roughly 33 megapixels. It gives you room to crop in to the exact part of the shot that you want, whilst still having enough resolution to have a clear and sellable image. I've tested 4K and found myself wanting that extra room to play with - especially if you're shooting end to end. I usually have an Alienware i9 64gb laptop with me on the field, but the battery life is an absolute disaster, so I rarely make it through a game without having to use an external battery booster, especially when using my video technique. Having all that power is nice, but the battery life is important to me.

                • +1

@Buz1986: This is what a lot of people are missing… all this power in the Apple SOCs that is still 100% available to you on battery!!! Even on my 8 core M1 Air it's astonishing what it can do on the battery… Then the actual battery life is ridiculous… I used my machine all day today - didn't do anything too intensive but I still had it on for 7.5 hours of screen time and the battery is still above 50% - I did a bit of video editing in Resolve and some writing of scripts and a bunch of emailing - it's all rather insane what the Apple SOC are capable of, I'm hoping that your beast is everything you need and more!

            • +1

              @Buz1986: Very cool!

    • cool, so confirmed multiple Apple gift cards can be stacked
could you plz share the links to Ozb CC and flubuys deals you used?
looking to get the same with 2TB and retiring the 2013 mbp

      • +1

Yep; can be stacked (up to 8 according to T&C)
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654253

        • +2

Oh and one thing to note, that I didnt realise - Apparently you can redeem the gift cards to your account, and then on top of that use up to 8 gift cards at time of purchase, so I could have technically done the entire amount on gift cards, just by redeeming $4500 worth of gift cards, then using 4 more $500 gift cards at time of purchase, thus getting more Flybuys points

  • +3

Thanks so much, was gonna pay through normal edu store prior to seeing this post :)

  • +1

Thanks. Good pricepoint, I got 5.

  • If i am not going to buy so soon and doesn't have any plan yet, is it a good idea to buy gift cards or nah ? Still few hours left before Coles closes.

    • +1

If you haven't bought any, then you thought it wasn't a good idea right?

If your intention is to purchase one of the models which will be in retail stores and Amazon, then maybe not worth getting the gift cards (based on the history of the cheapest M1 base model deals posted on OZB). If you intend to purchase a special custom model, you need to purchase from Apple (or Apple via education store or epp store), then you might want to consider.

~11% discount from this deal + Coles Flybuy points + other reward combination, you can see why people are quite tempted.

      • +1

I doubt these will feature discount rates that the normal M1 did on retailers

  • Got 5x 500 giftcards. Heaaaaps in stock at my local coles! Was scared that I was gonna have to make do with $100 cards. Do expect them to lecture you about scams though. Huge discount on not a day old mac - thanks OzBargain!!

    • Make sure you are okay with the base model (which is 8 CPU cores + 10 GPU cores, NOT 10 CPU cores + 14 GPU cores). If you are buying on day 1, do check carefully. It's quite a lot of money, you don't want to buy the wrong model.

      • It doesn't make a lot of differences if you are not a pro. M1 is already fast enough, and this 8 core one contains 6 performance cores which should be enough for most cases. Most people will hardly feel the difference.

        • Day 1 pre-order is for those either really have the need (which they would have the workflow to benefit) or wanting a shinny new toy. It just feels that if someone really want to go for M1 Pro, one would go for at least 10 + 14 CPU. Otherwise, just go with M1. Or, is that Pro Motion XDR display a must have?

          • @netsurfer: I bought for my wife to replace her 2015 macbook pro. So it is more than enough.lol

          • @netsurfer: The display, design, ports, camera, thermals, multi monitor support etc etc makes the entry level model very appealing to many I imagine.
You are right that most don't need the additional performance of the extra large cores though.
When you compare a 16/512 M1 MBP its not a bad price on the entry M1 pro 14" IMO.

            • @Danthemanz: If you must have 512GB SSD with 16GB RAM and Macbook Pro M1, then yes, you might as well go for 14 inch MBP.

Though, for my family relative, I recommended MBA. It is interesting that with M1, a lot of people were saying 8GB is enough, now these M1 Pro / Max MBPs are out, a lot of people are now making 16GB the minimum.

      • Yeah, I know the difference. It's a shame, but I couldn't justify spending that much more for 2 extra CPU cores. I'm just using it for CompSci/Light game development. You gave me a heart attack though…. It's actually 14 GPU cores, not 10 for base model.

        • Game development.. ah.. okay that makes sense why you want one of these. Enjoy your new MBP then.

          • @netsurfer: Hey, thanks. My first Apple device other than my 1st gen SE. I have always been the typical 'Apple hater', but I honestly can't say anything bad about the price of these things. I do have concerns with durability/repairability (I am a Louis Rossman fan), but I'm just gonna pray that these early adopter problems don't affect me that much.

    • Are you able to do split cc payments with Apple Gift Cards?

      • +1

I put the 5 GCs in, as well as my mastercard debit on the same page. The next page confirmed that 2500 was coming from the GC's and the rest ~$150 from my card. I did opt for the better charger though. was only ~$25

  • Am i the only one who liked touch bar? Very hand when u use external monitor

    • +3

Touchbar is the worst abomination ever.

      Completely useless for most people.

    • @hopper - To answer your question, yeh.

    • I love touchbar too.

    • +1

It wasn't the worst, but lacking the other buttons was more annoying then having the volume/brightness slider etc IMO.
Should have kept it with the full row.
But if that meant less room for speakers, I'd take the speakers most days.

    • Love my touchy touchbar

    • +1

Am i the only one who liked touch bar

      yes

  • nice, is 2658.7$ the RRP for that spec? or is it a deal?

defintely will be waiting for Xmas or black friday sales or refub units for this one

    • RRP is $2999, but watch out for the 14 inch as the base model is a 8 core CPU (not 10 cores) and less GPU cores (14 instead of 16).

      • +1

I think the base model is excellent value actually. The extra cores makes it more future proof but the base one is still plenty of power - and still comes with ProMotion and all

        • Agreed!

  • Does anybody think it will be cheaper next year? Was planning to upgrade then but because of chip shortage / supply chain issues / inflation I'm wondering if it will go up in price instead of down. Seen a few other electronics go up.

    • Apple is usually good with its supply chain, pricing in any potential shortfalls against expected demand — I heard they usually plan out their contracts (ie. booking chip factories and the sort) a few years ahead. The M1 base models were rampantly on sale last year not too long after release, though I believe that was Apple pushing its first gen Apple Silicon models out into more hands for better PR to build confidence in preparation for future iterations like this one.

    • I doubt they will be cheaper next year. Unless Apple releases M2 replacing these models and having the M1 Pro/Max chips become the low end.

    • +5

The main reason a lot of people are buying now is due to the combination of this 11% AND the bonus Flybuy points deal. It is probably unlikely Apple will change the price of this (unless AUD goes up like crazy - unlikely). If you don't want to missed out on the Flybuy points deal, you can still do it and buy the Apple product you want later. I doubt Apple will change the pricing of this particular educational site.

We do not know what feeBay, Amazon will come up around Christmas and next year. Unless your current laptop is not up to the task, ask yourself whether it is really wise to go for first generation Apple silicon? Surely Apple will introduce M2, M2 Pro/Max, M3, M3 Pro/Max etc… With M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max having the same single core CPU performance, you really need workflow to benefit from M1 Pro / Max and honestly, if you do have that kind of workflow, you would be making enough money to justify buying now.

Honestly, if you are after a bargain for this shinny new gadget / toy, then maybe some more time to think about it will help.

      • Have a mid 2012 retina MBP thats still going strong, these really are incredible machines- I make music and it still works so well, but now it's starting show signs of a slow down and I was going to upgrade at some point next year. Bit the bullet and did the flybuys deal tonight, thanks to everyone for the info in here. Hope this lasts another 10 years :)

    • Will likley be the same unless the dollar moves a lot.
You may get a couple of bucks better from a 10% sale down the line, but only on the retail models, so no custom config.

  • Still rocking my 2010 MacBook Pro!

    • Literally just rocking your MBP and not able to do anything else with it? XD

    • Still using my 2011 once a while although have to disable that doggy GPU. New macOS putting too much security restrictions to use older softwares, which is why I still keep this machine.

    • Oh my late 2013 MacBook Pro rocks too!! Litrally. The battery expanded and it doesn't sit flat anymore… (can't close the lid all the way too and it presses against the track pad - which I had to disable).

  • Delivery isn't till end of November for the 14" model - does anyone think availability will be instore next week as announced? Definitely keen to get hands on with it earlier rather than later…

    • It's hard to tell as other retailers are taking pre-orders. Assuming their systems are correct, then you do have a better chance to get them, if you are willing to pay RRP. That could change though as these are selling like hot cakes (more like selling way better than hot cakes).

    • Lot of people got a delivery date of next week and first week of Nov.

  • +2

Early CPU geekbench scores (unofficial) and GPU TFlops figures (Apple figures. Source: Anandtech)

CPU Single Core CPU Multi Core(s) GPU Performance
    M1 1,733 7,584 2.6 TFLOPs
    M1 Pro 5.2 TFLOPs
    M1 Max 1,749 11,542 10.4 TFLOPs

M1 Max's leaked multi core performance benchmark seems wrong though (should be a lot higher).

So yes, M1 Max does beat PS5's GPU (and CPU).

    • +1

I found it didn't scale too well in multi, a little shocking actually. If they are correct I suspect it's hard limited the cpu cores thermals and/or memory bandwidth to dedicate more to the gpu.
I find it a strange decision, particularly with a larger gpu option available.
We might find the multi results hit higher in either a different model or simply final hardware. Will have to wait to find out.
