      • Not essential in all cases, but I strongly recommend buying endurance micro and cards rated for higher volumes of read or write. Had several cards die due to excessive IO on PIs, and it’s very common.

Without knowing how the person intends to use their PI, I’d default to recommending a card rated for more read/write particularly if running applications that do frequent logging. There’s solutions such as caching logs to RAM, but they go so far. It’s not a huge added cost for the smaller 64GB or so cards.

You wouldn’t run it on a Zero, but for heavier applications like Home Assistant on a PI4 I’d go so far as to suggest low end SSDs.

If you don’t have specific plans for the Pi I think the below is minimum:

Micro SD card = for the OS

Mini hdmi to hdmi = see what you’re doing on a screen+ sound output

Micro usb OTG = I can plug a keyboard/mouse for input till you configure Bluetooth input

Micro usb power supply = to power the device (use old phone charger)

If you’re not ordering from the same place and getting accessories elsewhere, it’s “Mini hdmi”, not micro hdmi… I made the mistake and ordered the wrong one.

  • +2

Thanks OP nabbed two to build my own hue lighting for the TV's in the house!

Tempted to order a 3rd for the PiHole and ad blocking!

    • +1

      Do you mind sharing how?
I'm not that tech savy but want to do something similar so don't have to buy hdmi sync box.
      Thanks

  • +1

will this fit into existing pi zero W enclosures?

    edit: yes, same dimensions

edit 2: need to get better power supply though, 2.5A vs 2.0A on the older zero 1 w

  • -2

May as well just spend $5 on a esp8266

    • +2

They're quite different products, this is a full blown computer vs a microcontroller. This will do a lot of things an esp won't.

    • I want to experiment with the ESP32. It has wifi and bluetooth built in. Costs $7.

    • +1

As much as I love ESP32, they don’t run Linux.
If you just wanna turn a switch on or off - yes much better to get ESP32.
IMHO the ESP32 camera module is a steaming pile of overheating unreliable ness

    • Have you been successful in getting an ESP8266 to connect to a WPA2 Enterprise WiFi connection? One where you have to enter account credentials, not a simple password.

Among other significant advantages over the ESP8266, the Pi Zero has absolutely no issues connecting to those networks.

I have been a big fan of these little IOTs, but, very recently, I tried proxmox on an old laptop and I can have several VIrtual Machines running at the same time. It’s like you are running a several Rpis for different purposes :)

    • +2

A laptop has drastically higher electricity usage though.

      • +1

Does it have drastically higher power usage than 10-20 pis?

        • You are technically correct, the best kind of correct.
          If you needed 10 pis.

Depending on your needs, you could simulate multiple PIs by running docker containers on the PI.
That would have the lowest usage.
I’ve assumed since you’re using proxmox you aren’t using GPIO, hence docker won’t cause contention.

        • -1

When you consider the fact that it would take multiple laptops to run that many VMs, yes it would.

  • Finally will have enough grunt to run motioneyeos

    • +1

Yes with one or two cameras maybe. (Equivalent to my pi2 I have running two cameras)
I’ve also experimented with Viseron, apparently if you get the coral edge TPU it’ll kick some serious butt

is similar but runs through homeassistant.

The coral is OOS everywhere though :(

        • Does coral help with motion detection though or just object detection.
Even my N5005 quad core celeron gets full load on two cores from motion detecting 6 cameras at 6 FPS.

EDIT: the reason I prefer viseron is it supports VAAPI and OPENCL acceleration (INTEL UHD 605 works!), frigate doesn’t does it?

  • Whoop ordered mine as my other ones wifi had died and really want to use as a ad blocker 🤟🏼

    • -4

You're using a wifi adblocker? How terrible is your internet connection for that to not cause you a bottleneck?

      • +2

It is only for the DNS (usually) so performance is not affected

      • AdBlocking over WiFI is fine as it’s only DNS, there is a negligible difference in running DNS on WiFi vs Wired.

  • About damn time I can get more of these.

Among other projects, they make excellent redundancies for dead man's switches.

    • +2

      do elaborate

      • +1

At a high level overview, you configure them to communicate and synchronise with each other (and you) using a platform and authentication method of your choice, then place them at different locations and internet sources for redundancy.

    • About time, it was announced in the last few hours?

      • +1

I've been after Raspberry Pi Zero W's for a couple of months now, but they've been out of stock. A Pi Zero 2 W at a slightly increased cost will do just fine for my purposes, especially since it'll be here next month.

  • +3

    Mini SimpsonsTV :)

  • i don't know what this is, but i feel like i need it.

    • -3

If you don't need it or even know what it is don't bloody buy it. Chip shortage is bad enough for tinkerers and hobbyists without people buying them up because they look pretty.

      • There's no hierarchy of buying rights. People who want to buy this for giggles or because it looks pretty have just as much right to it as others.

        • +1

Not saying they don't. Just saying it's a shit thing to do to buy something you'll never use only to throw it in a drawer when people are literally begging for new batches to come out. Also, why create more e-waste for no reason? Someone could actually use this for something rather than it sitting in drawer for its entire life until getting throw in the trash.

      • ok sorry, i won't buy one.
you have completely discouraged me in purchasing this item. I thought the community would be more welcoming, but after reading your reply i was very wrong. I am not a professional tinker, but i like to dabble a little bit. I see that if you aren't a season veteran, you are not allowed.

thank you for letting me know, i will stop my new hobby and find something else to do.

        • -1

You've been on OB for 4 years. Should have developed a thicker skin by now lol.

  • OOS

  • +1

Guess I shouldn't sleep…. oh well, on the core wishlist for maybe next time.

  • +1

So sad I missed this one :(

  • Damn… missed out. I love the form factor on the Zero's. So many possibilities

  • +1

Looks like 8.30 -9am is the time when the mass rise up login to purchase and ozbargain.

    • +6

What do you think I do when I start my workday? Check emails?

  • +1

If anyone is experiencing buyer's remorse hmu

  • I gotta say it was a great experience dealing with these guys for the first time this week. Had everything I needed for my Pi project. Good Prices. Delivered within a day and half. And great communication/follow up afterwards.

  • Is pi zero 2 powerful enough for octoprint? I know old pi zero struggled.

    • Octoprint has recommendations on their website. Its much better source of information for their project than ozbargain.

      • +3

Why are people negging this? And why are people too lazy to check actual official sources of information?

"and yes, it works beautifully with OctoPrint."

Just remember to factor in the power supply and grab the latest version of Octoprint so it does not complain about it being underpowered because it thinks it's a Zero v1. (Chances are you already have a capable USB power supply anyway.)

  • Can you put android OS on it?

    • I tried on Pi 3B+. It can barely play videos at 360P.

    • On a Zero, absolutely not.

On a 3B+, It'll run, but you'll have pretty bad performance, especially if you put the official GApps on it.

      Haven't tested a 4.

  • +1

    Any other alternative sellers?

    • +1

yeah these guys seem to have 1-2 stock at a time and runs out in under 5 mins

    • +1

I ordered mine from the UK straight after the announcement. All up including shipping was only a couple of bucks more than local.

      • Mind sharing your source? Would love to get one to experiment with!

        • Either pimoroni or pi hut - both are good.

  • +1

Can i use Raspberry Pi Pico for home assistant and ad guard home?

    • No, the Pico is more like an Arduino - it's a microcontroller that you program, rather than a small computer with an operating system on an SD card like the Pi Zero/1/2/3/4.

      • +1

oh okay do you think pi Zero is good enough to handle Home assistant and Ad Guard home?

        • HA yes - I used to do this but no longer need to anymore. Ad Guard no - little too resource intensive for Zero 1, and you really need an Ethernet port, which gets messy with adaptors, cables and hubs. I did this with PiHole and it worked okaay, but the GUI was slow. Zero 2 might be better - still wouldn’t recommend it.

          • +1

            @Bedgrub:

            still wouldn’t recommend it

wouldn't recommend what ? using Ad guard Home in any raspberry pie ? or just not in raspberry pi's 0, 1.

            • @USER DC: On a Zero 1 or 2 - you’d need to stuff around with a USB Ethernet adaptor, which needs a ISB hub and a micro USB adaptor - the whole arrangement would be fragile, messy, and fiddly. Get at least a Pi 3 for AdGuard, which has an ethernet port.

              • +1

@Bedgrub: Thanks for this, seems like using a modem/router like GL.inet Flint may be better for Ad Guard Home purposes than using a raspberry pie. (Especially after factoring all the costs of the cables, adaptors, and case etc. may be guessing $50-60 for the whole setup. Even then would need to fork the mind over so much fiddling over settings/programing.

What about for just use for Home Assistant? Pi 0,1,2,3 ? which one is best for simple uses?

                • @USER DC: The more powerful the better, so a PI4 or a Pi3.

                • +1

@USER DC: Don’t need a workhorse for HA - I run it on a Zero 1 with no issues, and have used it on an original Pi 1 before. Get a Pi 3 minimum for future proofing.

                  • +1

@Bedgrub: Thanks mate will wait for a deal on Pi 3 then, hopefully wont get too burnt down by $$

  • +1

Thanks to this post i succesfully wasted $150 on core, then another 30 bucks to pihut. Cheers
