Is there a qr for this

  • +19

Access to calendar and contacts? No thanks!

  • +55

You mean a feature that's baked into the default camera app actually still costs money?

    • +3

Also most mobile browsers have the feature built in, can't see the need for a separate app.

      • +2

I'm on the Galaxy s7 and require a separate app :-(

        • I think latest Samsung browser (or beta one) has the QR code scanner built-in)

          • @MINKx: I'm unsure what you mean? Most people can just open their camera up and scan straight away. I have to find the app, open it, then scan.
My phone has all the available updates on it, so I assume it won't be able to get the inbuilt scanner in the camera app?

            • @kimba88: Yeah a few of the older phones don't have the capability built into the standard camera app - but the latest version of Google Chrome has the ability to scan QR codes (it's a pain in the ass to get to unless anyone knows a shortcut… Open a page, share a random page, choose the "scan" tab)

            • +1

@kimba88: download the Firefox app, it has a QR scanner built-in.

        • +1

It's built into the Samsung browser

    • +3

Remember torch apps on the iPhone…

      • +1

Kinda forgot that was a thing. How far we have come.

    • I'm still using a Huawei Mate 10, it's not baked into the default camera app.

So yeah, wow hey, imagine giving people a choice of what they use to do things?

      • +2

Plenty of free options too. But hey, if you want to pay $3.50 I'm not going to stop you.

    • Pixel 6 pro still needs an app. Camera ap ai not good enough

      • +1

Not sure what you're talking about here? The default camera app scans qr codes just fine.

        • I think they just mean the ai is not as efficient maybe?

  • Does anyone remember when there were barely 2 or 3 QR /Barcode reader apps in the Google Play store? You would try them ALL out to see which performed best for you.

Just looked this one up in the Google Play store and there now appears to be hundreds of apps available :) My app is circa 2012 and it ain't broke, so I won't bother.

  • Helpful for people using old android versions on their phones

  • +8

google lens is with android, why does someone needs an app to read QR codes?

    • +1

      To read qr codes?

  • +4

QR codes are a terrible idea. The user has no idea what they're connecting to and replacing them with a malicious instance is as easy as printing a sticker and applying it.

    • Agreed. But that's why any qr app worth it's salt will display the url for you to check before clicking blindly

      • +2

Often they use shortened URLs with a redirect in order to create a smaller/ faster scanning code

        • +1

Yeah this is dumb. It's times like that where I'll grab the url and run it through urlscan.io or checkphish.ai to grab a screenshot. But the average person wouldn't, making it a great tool for malware distribution

      • +1

        Salt increases blood pressure

        • But iodine helps reduce blood pressure too….so…..

          • +1

@Forfiet: OP was using salt as an figure of expression. Didn't mean table salt…

            • +1

              @gimli: I know I was being pedantic :P

    • So are nfc

    • If you think they're a terrible idea, you're not using them correctly.

  • Useful for older devices.

  • Pretty sure the standard camera app in most Android phones already does this by default…

    • ^^this, I'm using the Barcode scanner pro but can't tell the difference between the camera app

  • Google goggles is better.

Most android phones you can just hold the home button down and use lens.

  • I dont get it. Dont you just use your phones camera and itll scan it automatically taking you to the page? Im pretty sure both Samsungs and iPhones do this.

    • Current ones do but the older ones don't

Quite a few upvotes but none of the commenters (thus far) have actually upvoted so far. Seems to be people have just seen FREE (was $X) and thought it was a good deal.

There's countless free QR scanners out there if it's not baked into your camera or you can't/don't use Google Lens. The fact people seem to have paid for this is rather confusing.

    Edit: WTF ARE THESE PERMISSIONS

    This app has access to:
    Calendar
read calendar events plus confidential information
    Contacts
    read your contacts
    Location
    approximate location (network-based)
    precise location (GPS and network-based)
    Phone
    directly call phone numbers
    Photos/Media/Files
read the contents of your USB storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
    Storage
read the contents of your USB storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
    Camera
    take pictures and videos
    Wi-Fi connection information
    view Wi-Fi connections
    Other
    view network connections
    connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
    full network access
    control vibration
    prevent device from sleeping

    • I looked up App Permissions and I only have Camera permitted when the app is in use.

      Denied are,
      Calendar
      Contacts
      Files and Media
      Location
      Phone

Where did you see all the others as clearly you have somewhere?

      • +3

Under the view details of the permissions tag.

Updates to QR/Barcode Scanner PRO may automatically add additional capabilities within each group.

Furthermore, seems that it can further add to these permissions if you've already approved the category (which most would probably just click through already)

Just use Safe QR by Trend Micro. No ads, basically no permissions and a company a lot more trustworthy.

The following permissions are required for optimal protection and service.
        • Camera: Used to scan codes and detect other supported readable formats
        • Storage: To view and scan existing photos or images

        • +1

Thanks for sharing the details. Looks a great alternative.

  • The default camera app on iOS and Android can scan QR codes

  • +2

I recommend QR Code Scanner. The only permissions it requires are camera and vibration.

  • Absolutely terrible idea. If your phone and/or browser doesn't scan QR codes natively, use Google Lens or something that doesn't require money and access to everything.
