Link is to Woolies, title says Coles.

Agree that it is by far the best canned tuna brand.

    • +1

Sorry about the link. The sale is definitely Coles. That link just points to a photo - that's all.

This brand ranks really poorly for environmental impact, sad really considering that it's a premium brand.

      • pipped at the pole. Agreed!

        • -2

who cares hippy, as long as it tastes good that's all that matters

        • dont support over fishing unless you dont want tuna for your kids.

    • +2

Confirmed - the tastiest tuna on the market by far.
Unfortunately, they're close to the bottom of the market in terms of sustainability - http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/what-we-do/oceans/Tak…
I normally buy the Safcol Pole&Line tuna now and stock up when it's on special.

The world ends this year so taste is the most important attribute rather than sustainability.

"For all 2012 doomsday-sayers out there..

Leaps years weren't invented until Julius Caesar introduced the new Julian Calendar in 46 BC. There have been 514 leap years since then. Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013.

The Mayan Calendar did not account for leap year… so technically the world should have ended 7 months ago."

          ;)

        • +2

The people who worked out the date of 21 December 2012 have accounted for leap years.

Agree best Tuna. The chilli oil one is amazing!

Is there a link to confirm price?

Just letting everyone know that Coles are in bed with John West and don't stock any Greenseas tuna, which is Australia's favourite brand. For this reason I haven't shopped at Coles in over a year. Buy this at Woolworths instead just to stick it to Coles.

    • +4

oh boohoo…sirena is better than greenseas anyway

      • +7

I find Greenseas to be amongst the worst canned tuna. Even Woolies brand is wayyyyyy better.

  • +1

    The best.

  • +7

Maybe the best canned tuna - but if its from Thailand like many other tuna's you might like to read this.

No criticism of the deal/post, just some info that might be worth reading

If you have a can you might like to update us on the source of the tuna

    And I am NO greenie…

    http://mrvitaminsnews.com.au/diabetes/does-tuna-cause-diabet…

    • Just checked my can of John West tuna at work, and it's MADE IN THAILAND… worried now… to eat or not to eat…

      • They're all made in Thailand at the same factory. They divide the tuna meat into grades and throw it into different colored cans, different branding and different grades of oil. No matter what brand it's all run by the same corporation. No one else dare enter the market to to try and sell their tuna in the supermarket isle because of the manufactured illusion of choice.

        • They divide the tuna meat into grades and throw it into different colored cans

The worst ones go into the Coles brand cans, they are just mush…

      • You'll be hard pressed to find a tuna that isnt made in Thailand…

      • The tuna is processed in Thailand, but may have been caught in other waters.

If you're concerned about eating fish from the region you might be out of luck at the supermarket. Are there any local canners left at Port Lincoln in SA? Last I heard all the best tuna is airlifted to Japan.

Sirena Tuna is a product of Thailand. I love Tuna but don't eat fish out of Vietnam or Thailand or any food from China.

  • +12

What? You're all obviously a bunch of ignoramuses,
Aldi Ocean Rise Yellowfin Tuna out rank Sirena & Greenseas put together!
And at $1.99 for 185g all the time, it's even cheaper then this junk

but if you want to care then greenpeace have a guide
    http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/what-we-do/oceans/Tak…

Personally I was saddened by the dimise of the dolphin flavoured stuff…Mmmmm flipper goodness

Oh and the secret to buying tuna is look at the ingredients, Sirena are pretty high in the tuna percentage (~81% if i remember correctly) so of the other stuff is as low as 60%

  • +3

does anybody rate the tuna from aldi. i personally don't find it too bad and is good value.

    • +1

Tasted it, and nowhere near as tender as Sirena. At this price, I'd stock up if I were you.

      • yeah but did you try the yellowfin stuff or they white stuff?

    • +2

I like the aldi tuna … price is hard to beat also.

      • -1

        where is it made ?

    http://www.callipo.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=art…

Try callipo if you haven't yet. Pure olive oil, fully processed in Italy.

It's a little hard to find it but it just tastes amazing.

    • +2

+1. Callipo is easily the best Tuna available in Australia by a huge margin. It's not made in Thailand, it's from Calabria. However, I only buy it for a 'treat' now and then from the Mediterranean on Sydney Rd in Melbourne and it's hugely expensive.

  • No Aldi in SA so Sirena for me!

  • i love this stuff, any of the others just does taste as good. who really like tuna in spring water tastes like cardbroad. i like they have simple chili flavour instead a whole bunch like others where you don't know what to expect!

  • +2

Wow I never even thought about tuna brands always just bought John west out of convenience. Definately going try this brand since it seems to be unanimously approved as the better tasting tuna.

  • Do they sell springwater variety?

  • +2

I'm of Italian descent, and until 18 months ago I and all of my colleagues and family had Sirena solely ingrained in our blood. However, one by one we have been converted by a colleague who swears by Sole Mare. Now we're all eating it and would put it above Sirena in taste. <$2 normal price. There's a couple of places that we've found it in Melbourne, on Bell St near Northland(Don't know the name but I've seen the sign) and DHA importers on A'Beckett St near RMIT in the city.

Highly recommended giving it a chance. No others at the big supermarkets compare, except Sirena.

  • they use this brand in Breadtop… if you guys r interested into the tuna buns………!

  • yep Sirena defintely best taste - but now keen to try Calippo / Solo Mare - but unlikely to find (Brissie?)

Re Sirena - the bigger cans are chunky/whole style - if you are buying the tiny cans go for plain or chilli which is still chunk style - all the rest are the mashed up style. Thanks OP for the post.

    • Sole Mare is in Woolies - I had some for a snack earlier today!

  • serena best tuna i ever eaten

  • +5

I love ozbargain! Need a 5min comedy fix just hop on ozbargain and read the comments - you get a deal and a show!

    • +4

If you bought the tuna, you also get the meal too.

  • +1

I stopped eating tuna altogether because it's all made in Thailand, how can you trust the processing methods over there? I doubt they have very high food standards… There are NONE that are made in Australia and I don't know why

    • +2

i bet the thai people are saying the same about products made in australia.

  • Not at my Coles in qld 4505
    http://catalog.coles.com.au/Catalogues/50c52fc3-01a1-4118-9c…

Standing in the canned fish isle all I can see is the John west on sale@***!!!

    Sure it's a Coles deal?

    Cheers Jeff

    • Its in my local catalogue, front page, unlucky QLD.

      • They have cheaper fruit and veges. I'd prefer that than once off cheap sirena tuna.

  • I've gotten so use to greenseas no-drain option, so convenient.. so I will have to taste test Siren to see if its worth the messy oil situation.

  • Heinz chicken in a can is 2 for $3

    • people seriously eat this ? seriously?

      • +1

I bet you that people used to say exactly the same thing about canned fish when it was first released. Come on, grow up.

  • what brand does subway use for their tuna ?

  • The best brand of tuna i have ever had is DALTUNA.
