The only machine left to be discounted now is Barista Pro… Patiently waiting đŸ¤”

    • and creatista pro đŸ˜¥ unless ive missed?

  • +1

Don't forget about 7% off HN gift cards!

    • Maybe better to use amex offer of $20 cashback (if one has), would be better for extended warranty amex may provide.

      • Plus can use your travel credit for this instead.

    • How to get the 7% off HN gift cards mate? :)

      • Shopback gift card portal

      • Shopback

  • Is there much difference between this and the barista express besides the inbuilt grinder?

    • +1

No, in fact, I think you'd be making better coffee with a standalone grinder. The grinder that's built into that machine isn't even capable of choking it out or producing a fine enough grind.

      • +2

It's absolutely capable of choking it and producing some fine enough grinds :P But that's the issue, it's inconsistent and clumpy.

I would agree you are better off with a separate grinder. But honestly if you want an all-in-one, it's probably the best on the market.

        • +1

Yep I have the barista express and the grinder isn't perfect - it's a little inconsistent - but it's definitely good enough especially when you consider the size of the whole package on the countertop.

        • Not sure what choking is…
Bench footprint is definitley a factor. The wife likes the look of the all in one but I think there will be more benifit from having the separate (better) grinder

          • @Rumboocha: I think if you want to do other styles of coffee other than espresso-based drinks (eg. filter, cold brew), then sure. But I don't think most people would recognize the difference. I had a BES870, but upgraded to the dual boiler and a niche zero. The difference in espresso taste was pretty minor. But I also like my filter coffees and it's waaaaaay more noticeable there.

  • Good timing - the missus wants a coffee machine for xmas to upgrade from her pod machine.
I was looking at the Barista Express ($600 at JB) because of the built in grinder.

What sort of grinder should I look at to go with the Infuser?
I don't even drink coffee so this is all totally foreign to me!

    • breville smart grinder is a good cheap option, there are plenty of others and you could find a 2nd hand prosumer machine for a similar price

      • Shit, it's almost the same price of the coffee machine :o

        I assume this is it:
        https://www.amazon.com.au/Breville-Bcg820Bss-Grinder-Brushed…

I'd hate to see the expensive option!

        • yes wait for it to hit $200, the grinder is more important than the machine and freshly roasted beans are the most important part

        • It has previously been on sale for $150 but probably not in the last year?

    • Do you intend on scaling your coffee production past the Breville Infuser in the next year or two? If so, I'd recommend getting a Baratza Sette 270. If you don't intend on getting a little more snobby with your coffee (and we all do), then I'd pick up a Breville Smart Grinder Pro and you'll be good to go.

      • Nah, she's upgrading from a pod so I don't reckon she'll scale up.
        Just grabbed the smart grinder.

        Thanks

        • Honestly I've had this machine for years and it's easy better to just get freaky roasted/ground coffee from local places. I couldn't be stuffed with grinding at home.

You're paying about the same for beans regardless if they're ground or not. Find a good local place and forgo the extra expense, mess and maintenance!

          • @Quantico: That doesn't work well with the 15/15/15 rule.

Use ground coffee within 15 minutes, roasted beans within 15 days, green/unroasted coffee within 15 months.

            • @TEER3X: If it's sealed and kept well the diminishing returns aren't that serious. Honestly I'm talking morning coffee here is excellent, and it's not really noticeable that the ground coffee isn't 15 mins old.

Totally understand if conossours would want the AAA experience everytime, but I'd suggest the cost, effort and time isn't worth it. If you're going from pods to fresh espresso machine, I'd say the jump is already amazing.

Not saying rules like that are not true, but I swear a lot of it comes from marketing to sell more things like retail grinders.

              • @Quantico: I vacuum seal and freeze my whole beans, but I only use them for cold brew.

I currently use a pod machine and am fairly happy with the results, but the coffee in the pods is hermetically sealed so it stays somewhat fresh. So I'd definitely be ok with buying ground coffee from a roaster for when I get my next (real) coffee machine, but more likely than not, I'm going to get a fully automatic one, so won't need ground beans.

          • @Quantico: Curious: would your advice also apply for varying quality of coffee and consumption frequency? For example, if someone were to buy 250g pack of ground coffee from aldi and drinks only 2-3 cups of espresso a day?

            • +1

@cache: I mean my flatmate has purchased cheaper stuff and used it with the machine, with the alternate attachment, and it works fine.

I get fresh, high quality stuff from local places and usually get 500g because we go through it in like 2 weeks, 1 cup a day each really. I keep it pretty well sealed in the fridge and there is barely a noticeable drop in freshness over 2 weeks, at least I'm fine with it.

Thing is, you can try out different stuff before investing the expense in your own grinder. If you have the cash to splash all good, but I just can't be arsed doing it every day haha

  • hmm trying to decide between this and Bambino Plus - how is this better?

    • yeh I'm thinking of the same question. Is this better or Bambino? Bambino is alot more compact and I don't need to see the pressure gauge

      • +3

You absolutely do want to see the pressure gauge. It's going to significantly help to dial in shots on non-pressurized baskets.

        • Im pretty happy with my bambino + bottomless portafilter / non pressurised basket. the 3 sec start up time and compact footprint is great. i already had a smart grinder pro + aeropress.

I do like the analogue controls of this i think its more aligned to a purist having dial controls.

    • +2

Bambino plus has auto frothing wand but no non pressuresied basket.
      The infuser has pressure gauge

Depends how fussy you are with your coffee for me the bambino auto steam wand is great set and forget don't have to hold and watch it the jug. And instead of the pressure gauge your going to have to just time your shots.

With the infuser you can dial in the perfect shot.

    • No brainer, the Infuser! The Bambino Plus is close to twice the price of this deal.

      • Unless stock levels have changed, the Bambino Plus should still be ~$361 from TGG commercial, so it's still a fair comparison.

  • "This + Breville Grinder Pro" or Barista Express or Barista Pro?

Which is a good option for latte drinkers?

  • 1-2 months delivery on Amazon :(
