not a bad deal but it appears to be the last generation, only does 720p

    • We've got a couple of these in our house - they work great. When did the new model get released? (I'm not sure which one's we've got).

      • March 7th was the announcement of the new Apple TV.

      • +1

New ones were officially released the same day as the new iPad, March 16th.

Just confirming, these $87 ones are last generation (720p only). Big W do sell the new ones too for $108 (1080p).

        • +4

They should have priced the 720p ones @ $72 if the 1080p ones are $108!

  • This is the old version, been up for this price a while

  • Can Apple TV give me HBO? It's American isn't it?

    • Nope

    • +1

Hope that was a joke. +1.

    • +1

      Can't connect to Telstra's 4G network either! ;)

  • +6

love BigW atm. Many bargains to be had.

  • +1

What additional features can the apple tv do besides renting movies?

    • +2

you can stream your 'not-so-legal' downloaded movies (avi, mkv, etc) using apps like Airplay, VLC Stream, Oplayer to Apple TV and watch them on big screen.

      • Don't you need a program to convert them on the fly? I didn't think they played then natively??

        • As maxx has mentioned above you can use an app such as Airplay, VLC Stream, Oplayer, to convert the content to a supported format and at the same time stream it to Apple TV unit "on the fly"

        • +1

AV Player is a good one, plays most file types. I havent needed to convert anything yet..

        • +4

I'm still reading into it, but apparently if you jailbreak these you can then install XBMC on them.
          XBMC does everything natively.

        • +2

+1, it really comes into its own when you jailbreak and install xbmc imo

        • Depends on the format. Apples site lists the natively supported formats.

      • you can also do this on your xbox and ps3 right? … so you wouldnt need apple tv if you've already got those devices?

        • +1

True. I used ps3mediaserver to stream videos to my PS3 from my PC. This is a pretty lightweight/fast media server app compared to some of the others out there.

Saying that though I haven't used my PS3 for streaming since I got an ATV with XBMC.

        • the PS3 has Cinavia protection that makes watching some of "your" movies difficult

      • +1 for XBMC, this is the only reason I've bought the ATV for myself and other family members.

As legiong mentioned XBMC does the decoding natively and therefore doesn't require a "server" application to do the decoding/streaming. If you have a router that has NAS capability your ATV can access the storage connected to your router, hence doesn't require you to have your computer running.

It's as simple as adding a network location (such as a Samba share) where your video files live and presto, the movies are available to stream!

EDIT: Woops this was supposed to be a reply to m0nkeycheese.

    • +1

XBMC might be worth looking into as well.

    • +4

Once jailbroken you can install either XBMC, which opens up a lot of potential for this little box or you can simply install Plex, which integrates into the main apple interface and you can browse your Plex served content on you computer in Apple style. I went with this option for my parents set up as it was easier for them to navigate than working through XBMC.

I was at the Auburn branch last night and the sales guy said it was the new version.

    • It states that this model has the A4 chip inside it, which can only do 720p. The new model has the A5 chip inside.

      Big W product Specifications:
      http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/televisions/AppleTV/bpnBI…

      New Apple TV specifications:
      http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html

    • Go back to the store and see if you can get the new one, ie version 3, because if you can it would be great bargain. Sometimes you might just get lucky

    • I already have one, but I will go back tomorrow to check.. maybe he was giving me false info.. will report back!

      • Just to confirm, it was the OLD model (sold out anyway)…

  • -2

Is not really a bargain given is the older version of ATV.

  • -1

Going off the specs on the bigW Webpage this apple tv is the last generation model. $87 is not worth it….

  • +1

great for people that want a cheap XBMC

I'm waiting for a jailbreak for the new appleTV :(

@MuscleNerd: “Apple’s least expensive iOS device (new AppleTV3,1) will likely be the most secure of the bunch”

    • If you jail break your apple tv can you watch movies for free?

      • …. you can watch YOUR own movies for free without jailbreaking, so long as you convert your videos to M4V/MP4. If you jailbreak you can install XBMC, Plex or Boxee (based on XBMC) on it and then watch pretty much any video format…though your inspiration for jailbreaking should not be purely to watch illegally obtained content.

        • +1

I have had jailbroken ATV2 with XBMC since July last year. It is fantastic as you keep all the existing ATV2 functionalities and it works flawlessly. It picks up my shared drive on my laptop via the ADSL router (all wireless) and just display the movie on the fly. Highly recommended.

Have a look at whirlpool forums if you need more info.

New one is $107 @ JB

  • dick smith has it for $88
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC6674/apple-tv

the rrp of the new apple tv is/will be $109

  • -4

From what I understand about this device, its useless without being jailbroken, not sure why people would get one to use it stock when other devices do stock 100x better.

    • +2

Most consumers don't know what jailbreaking is, let alone need or want it. If you've already got some other Apple devices around the house, then an tv is a simple, cheap and effective addition to your existing setup.

      • Exactly, the stock aTV is designed for people who pay for content via iTunes (music/movies/tv) or convert their disc based stuff for use on a PC/Mac in iTunes. The integration with other Apple products works amazingly well. Photo slide shows are a breeze, remote app for controlling music wirelessly, iCloud can sync photos across devices, AirPlay, stream or download audio and video podcasts & play whatever is in your iTunes library, just off he top of my head.

What exactly do these other stock devices do 100x better?

And before I'm accused of being an apple fanboy, I've been a PC user since my family got an 8086 XT in the 80's and continue to use them. However Apple's non-PC devices are just amazing, they work and they do it in a way that anyone in my extended family can use.

Ugh, why do I do this to myself? <insert arguingontheinternet.jpg here>

    • +3

      AirPlay

    • I have to assume that you use torrent a lot.

    • -4

I don't torrent and if customers don't know what jailbreaking is it just reinforces the uselessness of this device.

  • i didnt think you could jailbreak easily now that the new one has come out. Something about Apple have a new ios or something which they havnt hacked yet? not sure on all the details as I was only looking the other day

    • +1

Correct. There is no iOS untethered JB for AppleTV3. Its in the works and shouldn't be too long, but it maybe 1 day or 1year. Read this for updates http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=137

      • If you want to jailbreak wait for it or get the Apple TV 2 - 720p instead of 1080p tho…

      • sorry what i meant was I thought you cant jb the atv2 anymore either?

        • most of these would have the old IOS on as they would have been manufactured before the update, So as long as you didn't update what was in the box, you should be ok

  • +1

I'm not very familiar with Apple TV, but in a nutshell, is it better than WD TV Live? I already have one WD TV Live and am looking at buying the new wireless one now, but wondering if Apple TV is better in any wway compared to WD TV Live?

    • -1

Have a look at their supported file formats for one… lol…

    • +1

Out of the box, absolutely not. Hacked Apple TV2 only supports upto 720p. Apple TV3 supports 1080 but is not hackable…yet. WDLive is a great unit.

      • Oh yeah i know, i got one already and love it, but was wondering if Apple TV is better in some ways. Doesn't sound like it is, so looks like another WD TV Live wireless unit it is.
One thing i really don't like about WD TV is its GUI. Its just makes it kinda amateur-ish so I'm hoping that's one thing they have improved in the wireless version of WD TV Live.

        • I have had a WDTV for a long time just playing movies off attached USB drive.

Just bought latest AppleTV for a few reasons
          - nicer interface and control via iPhone or iPad as well
          - access to movie trailers and show previews
          - stream from local iTunes library, H264 video & music
          - Airplay throw most things from iPhone/iPad up to TV including music, photos, video, games
also make up TV like iPlay from AB, TED talks all via AirPlay onto TV
          - Potential for Netflix or Hulu using proxies and DNS haven't done this yet but next step

Aiming to retire WDTV when have enough content on iTunes library available for streaming

        • +1

All of those things except for Apple integration can be done on other devices that are superior.

The question is, do you want to buy a device that can only play a few file formats, as soon as you have to transcode from VLC etc you might as well use your computer with XBMC!

    • I have WD TV live streaming player and I was not going to recommend it to anyone because it used to cause freezes on certain 720p movies. However, the new firmware has finally resolved the issue and now I'm happy to recommed it.
With Apple TV, I'll definitely install XBMC on it If I bought one.

      • -6

too bad you can't install XBMC on the new Apple TV yet making it useless.

  • +5

ahh.. back in the days of xbmc on.. an xbox.

  • I've owned a WDTV unit and fiddled with a Apple TV.
The Acryan is made and supported by people who consistently update their firmware to support mkv files and other media format files.
    Why buy anything else ?

  • +3

You can also (without jailbraking) run Netflix of it. I do off 4 Apple TV's in my house.
Total Cost is $7.99 per month for Netflix and $4.99 for a DNS service that tricks Netflix into thinking you are US based.

Plus in true Ozbargain style you can actually get it cheaper here http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/appl…
    $79 including free delivery.

  • just my opinion but i find having a nettop as a HTPC is more versatile.
can run win7, xbmc, browser, youtube, streaming videos, karaoke, etc. all for around $300.

    • Horses for courses, aTV1 or 2 (hopefully 3) do a hell of a lot for around $100. With XBMC youtube & streaming video (ABC iView, SBS on Demand & others) are not a problem. I've never found web browsing on my TV as a useful feature, always got a notebook/iPad/iPhone in my hands to browse while watching stuff instead of tying it up.

If karaoke is worth $200 to you then enjoy.

  • +1

If you're a real cheapskate and don't care about 1080p, can currently get a refurbished last gen Apple TV for $79 from Apple (http://store.apple.com/au/product/FC572X/A). Still comes with full warranty so not too bad in particular if you also plan to do the xbmc thing.

    • Doh - just noticed in between me starting to type the message above, then getting some calls [dang that work thing], and finally hitting the save button, Macfanboy beat me to it! Ah well. ;-)

  • They are pretty much sold out of this model everywhere except for altona meadows, I even called dicksmith and they've only got the new ones now :(

  • +1

The inability of this device to accept USB input is a real deal breaker for me. I went from XBMC on the Xbox and would still be using it if it wasn't for it's inability to play hi-def - yes, I know it has no USB capability either, but XBMC is just such a beautiful user interface. I'm now using a WDTV live with hacked firmware for faster startup, but the UI is pretty clunky. At least it plays everything, and has USB input.

Why won't anyone make a decent player and install XBMC on it???

    • "Why won't anyone make a decent player and install XBMC on it???"
Ummmm build a PC install XBMC under Windows or Ubuntu

      OR

Buy a MacMini and install XBMC.

      Simple.

      • I popped XBMC on my MacBook Pro, combined with my Logitech Harmony remote and a HDMI cable, its an awesome portable media centre.

There's always the Boxee Box which is run by a modified XBMC. But I decided against that as my Mac works beautifully.
