Anyone know what the brand of the drive itself is?

  • +1

Anybody know brand and/or model number of hard drive used in these Buffalo DriveStations?

  • +1

Do you know what brand hard drives are in the enclosure?

    • I am not sure…but i believe its worth it as they are giving 3 years warranty.

  • Thanks just bought 4

    • So did I, hope the drives are good.

    • -4

why do people need to tell how much they bought? it's not like we asked for it lol….

      • +23

        that true..

btw.. same goes for your opinion =)

      • well it's somewhat of a measurement of how good they think the deal is.

    • +14

Why do people buy 4 and not + vote.

      • +1

Because they haven't received it yet.
What if the store suddenly decides not to sell it or takes ages to deliver?
Also you can't vote negative if you revoke your positive.

        • +1

This site wouldn't work very well if everyone did that.

By the time people get there hard drives this deal will be buried and sold out.

        • That's why they should either extend the time allowed when you can vote or let you vote negative after you vote positive.

  • Anyone know what the Drivestation and/or enclosure in the hard drives used in these brand models purple monkey dishwasher?

  • Google tells me that its a Samsung - and the internet hasnt lied to me yet so i would take it as gospel :)

  • Buffalo Technology DriveStation 2 TB,External,5400 RPM (HD-LB2.0TU2-EU) ?
there is also 7,200 RPM - UK version .

anyway. cheapest 2TB usb is $115 . so this one beats it.

  • Is Buffalo themselves not the brand? They are Big in Japan.

    • I have probably forgotten a brand, but afaik the only hard drive manufacturers these days are.

      Seagate
      Western Digital
      Hitachi
      Samsung

Actually, according to wikipedia there is also Toshiba and Simmtronics, though I've never seen either hard drive personally.

      • +1

Samsung sold out to Seagate. Hitachi sold/partnered with WD. So really there are two:

        Western Digital
        Seagate

Toshiba is buying the 3.5" division of Hitachi so, while there may be 3 soon, there isn't much from Toshiba just yet.

        • +1

Yeah I just read that…wow, so much for regulators preventing market domination, I realise that Toshiba getting the 3.5" division is about competition, but damn, letting 5 companies become 2.5 companies is a bit of a joke.

  • As far as I know its a 7200rpm… Thats a good enough punt for me.
Considering MSY cheapest internal 2tb starts at $108 and external USB $128 this is an awesome deal.
They will sell out very quickly I reckon

  • -1

Not wanting to be fussy but the title says 2TB=2000GB. Pretty sure it's not.

    • You need to get with the programme.
Manufacturers have been labelling drives and network volumes this way for years.

    • +5

2TB does equal 2000GB. It does not equal 2000GiB though, which is the unit most operating systems use. It will show up as about 1863GB on your computer.

      • this guy knows ^^^

however this is the most important point that you take away from a $99 HDD special? seriously?

      • -4

That's due to "overhead" for the file systems.

If you don't want to pay the price of the overhear,
just keep your file list on paper, & write file to tape (sic)
        - which ./ says is good & fast for huge data stores
~8 TB or more in size, as backup devices).

        :-)

        • +2

No, it's got nothing to do with "overhead" for file systems. There is bugger all overhead for file systems. This myth needs to die already.

      • -4

Unformatted, there is actually 2000GB, but due to file system formatting some space is specially 'reserved' for storage of file information (eg. NTFS) hence unusable to store personal data. How much it reserves depends on which one you choose to use.

      • +2

        OS will see:
        1024 bytes in a KB
        1024 KB in a MB
        1024 MB in a GB

        = 1073741824 bytes in a GB.

        Drives are sized as:
        1000 Bytes in a KB
        1000 KB in a MB
        1000 MB in a GB

        = 1000000000 bytes in a GB

Post 1999 what the OS is reporting really should be labelled KiB, MiB, GiB ect

    • Don't you remember the big US court case, that got folks rebate slips after the parties argued each way, respectively, on the matter of how much data capacity it's reasonable to expect a (say) 2 TB drive to have?

It's been "2 TB = 2,000 GB" (and similar for other sizes) since that court case.

im not sure of the brand but i can tell you now there selling fast. get in quick for a quick bargain as there selling like gold.

ive only offered this to ozbargain customers only.

    • +1

Great work REP and great deal.. Good work on the free shipping as this made me buy.

    • Done.
I had to pay by bank deposit. Will I still receive them?

      • +2

        No your bank will :)

  • I bought one of these from David Jones last year, cracked the case open to put the internal drive to my NAS.

Western Digital green drive was inside my case.

    • +1

Yuk!… I had a WD Green drive - worst HDD I have ever owned - however that being said a lot of other people have not had bad experiences with them so i mught have just gotten a bad one.

    • Is it easy to open one of these cases to remove the drive without cracking the case?

      • Fairly easy, you just need to take your time, I used an expired credit card and work my way around the edge.

  • I liked the older Buffalo deal, in which the box also had FireWIre 800
(the only speed that iMacs (of a year ago's era) would work with
(iMac's wouldn't slow down to FireWire 400, just to be friendly, ie,
    "backward compatible").

(That one may have had USB 3.0, making this one slightly less of a deal,
but it might have been larger; at least the retail packaging was larger!)

  • -1

hi to all. The deal is neally out. If your still thinking of getting this deal, buy it now as we have neally run out.

Dont say i didnt tell you.

thanks for the customers who have supported the deal too.

    • +4

Can't you just update the stock levels?
Instead of creating some "buy it now quick" rep-hype :|

      • +1

cannot. Need to hype it up :))))

        • Although I didn't vote you down, a stock levels post would be more appreciated I think, but you appear to be a good rep so far, good customer service below for steviee so + from me. :D

  • Thanks Rep, been waiting for a 2TB deal to come up.

  • +2

    all sold out.

  • hi to all.

    • -3

  • "item shipped" email ….well done GadgetCity

  • Hi Rep. A good deal on a portable hard drive would be nice!

    • hi there. a portable harddrive is next. In 2 weeks.

      • ok how do i get tech support ? i connected it to my Panasonic TV and now it wil not connect to my computer ???

  • I picked up a 2TB Seagate USB2 unit at North Ryde Officeworks last weekend for $99.00
    It uses a 2Tb 7200rpm Seagate drive.

  • would love to see a 3tb deal.

  • -1

For me it looks like another retailer to get our email details for selling limited number of stock.

    • How so? You only need to give details if you choose to buy, and with respect it took 2.5 hours to sell out an item that was at a great price. Hardly you average meritline deal that's worthless and sell out in a matter of minutes…

  • Stocktake aye…so who's stock did you take? Wasn't Wow Sight and Sound was it?

I recall them having these drives lol

  • Received :)

  • How do you take these drives apart? Anyone done it yet?

  • Got mine yesterday
