I've got the same tester at home. It's saved my ass many times. Theres a row of lights that run up and down like knight rider, if you've terminated wrong then the sequence will be out of whack, if there is a break in a single strand then that light will fail to show - simple but effective.

This is a 'dumb' tester - as in it just send signals down each wire in order left to tight and you should see the same lights and order on the other end right it doesn't show or confirm wiring type eg 568A or 568B or any indication of interference of signal strength. So if I had both ends of the cable within reach (which I know might not be the case) I could in theory do the same test with a multimeter right?

    Same old story…

Not sure if I need one but for this price I couldn't afford not to buy one. My flatmate calls it hoarding, I call it OzBargaining. Who's with me on this? :)

I'm here to tempt you with the same product for $1+ cheaper:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H52-RJ45-RJ11-Cat-5-Cat-6Cable-Ne…

      ;)

EDIT: Beaten to it by the fella below! Need coffee

      • Damn you, damn you to hell (just kiddin')

Well I certainly don't need 2 of these testers but thanks replying, perhaps it will help out others :)

      • Harro, lol. I'm so ronrey!

Much cheaper on eBay Look : http://tinyurl.com/748z37r

$2.50 for a smaller model, or $3.50 for same model as this.

These cable testing products are great. Nothing fancy - no TDR or SNR measurements - but just knowing you have a broken pair or incorrect terminations is enough to solve 99% of problems.

You must pay shipping. No way!

Get the same unit (Master NS-468)from ebay for $3.18AU ($3.25 thru paypal)
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RJ45-RJ11-RJ12-CAT5-UTP-NETWORK-U… - I bought this one.

    Or
Get a network tester from the same company, meritline, for $2.99 with free delivery.
    http://www.meritline.com/multifunctional-network-cable-teste…

    Or
As above from ebay for under $2.50
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Portable-RJ45-RJ11-Mini-Cat5-…

    Or
Get the one that looks like the one listed here from Meritline with shipping included for just under $5 - Oh! hang about the $0.99 special + shipping is the same price. Seems a marketing ploy to charge the same amount. I get regular special emails from meritline but have never purchased as their 'special' codes have always expired, or been previously used (even when I have not used it).

I buy a lot of stuff from Chinese online retailers however most always have shipping included which makes it easier. Meritline has some included, some you need to add to. Meritline takes up more of my time to compare so I tend not to bother with them.

Oh well.. got screwed for $2. There goes todays HJ's lunch! :) How anyone can make a profit on a $3 inc shipping item is beyond me.

  • Ridiculous, they throw these things away for free on ebay when you buy a cable.
