[VIC] Free Public Transport Travel Vouchers in December & January @ Public Transport Victoria

1761

To get you in the festive spirit, we’re giving away 250,000 free public transport travel vouchers.

To promote a safe return to public transport and reignite a passion for our city, you’ll be able to grab the gift of travel for a range of events and attractions throughout December and January.

This covers all public transport in Victoria that travels to the CBD, including:

Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses
Regional trains, coaches and buses

50,000 vouchers will be up for grabs for each of five different event categories such as Christmas events, galleries and attractions, dining, performing arts, and shopping. Vouchers will be available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

The vouchers will be available from 16 December, for travel from 18 December and will be emailed to you, so you can print, or display it on a valid device. The voucher will only be valid for your nominated day of travel.

While travelling on public transport this summer please remember, you must wear a fitted face mask covering your nose and mouth and to check in every time you see QR codes at stations and stops and while you travel on trains, trams, and buses.

Due to the high volume of website activity, we are currently experiencing difficulties with applications for free travel vouchers over the Christmas and New Year period.

Please try again later.

and you get free replacement bus daily!

    • +4

      Yes, a true Victorian experience.

      • +8

I can confirm this is in Sydney also, it's not an exclusive Melbourne experience ;)
Not really much of an option at this time of the year when train lines are being upgraded.
I'd rather they do it over the Christmas period or weekends than during the busier times of the year :)

    • -2

Only the Boganham line seem to require this daily for months at a time.

      • +2

Is that sydenham or Pakenham, please clarify

        • Both. And a few more

          • +1

@dosada: I'd throw in Sandringham, heck even Frankstonham can go in with that lot..

    • +12

You must be one of those "freedom fighting" rights activists/losers in the city.

  • +5

Thanks Op, this is a great initiative!

  • +7

OzB tip: Use your free day on a weekday as it is cheaper to travel on weekends!

    • So this is just one day only pass? I guess anything helps but I don't just have to go to work one day only. remember they actually gave out weekly passes for the train during the bus replacements.

      • +1

I suspect so, based on the comment " The voucher will only be valid for your nominated day of travel."

  • +2

So how exactly do we get these free vouchers?

    • +4

Good question, nothing has been mentioned yet.
There should be more info closer to the date I reckon.

      • I'm still waiting for the $50 myki vouchers that were never available early in 2021…

  • how do you get these?

    • +1

Load the website link on the morning of the promotion :)

  • can these be used for V-Line away from Melbourne to Bendigo? Would they have a way of making sure it's only inbound travel covered?

    • +2

guess depends how it works. I know I used free public transport offer for something else once. might have been to go to the show. I just said I was coming back from the show (stayed overnight) when i was checked going to Warnambool and then when I came back to Melbourne I said I was on the way to the show (or whatever event it was leading to the offer)

    • +8

Hey, maybe you could use the travel voucher to head to the protest!

      • -3

        Protest? Nah, this is great!

          +1 Matt Foley reference

      • well its free Public transport, who cares what each individual does with it.

      • Hey, I got an autoimmune disease, was worried about getting vaccinated, but I'm at much more risk if I'm not vaccinated and get Covid. Had the shots, no problem apart from feeling crap for a day, and now I'm free, don't have to go to no protests.

Metro public transport fares will be increasing in an average of 2.3 per cent from January 1, 2022. That rise means that daily fares in zone 1, zone 2 and zone 1 and 2, will be 20 cents dearer in metropolitan areas (that is, Melbourne)

  • -8

Other countries are already starting to lock down again. We won't do it until we have 10s of thousands sick, and then it will be back to draconian rules and control again instead of sensible measures. It doesn't matter which state or party - none of our governments are up to the task it seems to me.

    • +3

Do you think it's sensible to not introduce restrictions if our hospitals are at breaking point?

      • -3

I think it's very sensible. I said it's a pity we won't do it until 10's of thousands sick. Why would we wait until the hospitals are at breaking point. Go early, go hard but don't have cops on patrol looking for the most minor infractions in some suburbs while other suburbs with covid cases are under much laxer rules.

I didn't think what I said was confusing. Where did I say we shouldn't do it until hospitals are at breaking point for pity sake???? STOP PROJECTING.

This board can be so damn toxic.

    • …draconian rules and control again instead of sensible measures

The measures are proven to work over centuries of human history. I wouldn't call them 'draconian'… It's like saying walking is a draconian form of travel because we have cars…

      • -4

You didn't even bother to ask what draconian rules I was referring to, did you sport?

Travel permits to go to work 15 mins away that threaten 2 years in jail and $22k fines if you pick up some food on the way to work won't stop a virus. That's what I was subjected to. The sort of person that fills out permit isn't likely to break the rules.

Or howabout racial and socio-economic profiling when there's no basis in the biology? LGA of DISDAIN.

    • -3

This board is the absolute worst sometimes. Can't be bothered to actually understand what I stated clearly, misrepresent it, down vote then pile on. Can't wait for the next R U OK posturing.

  • +3

    Comes with free omicron?😂

    • Sign me up.

    • you men Moronic?

  • -4

PTV is just all about hypocrisy and bragging..
    Must be privatised asap

    • +2

We privatised and outsourced basically the whole public transport sector in the 90's, and arguably that has lead to a large number of the issues with public transport in Victoria.

  • -1

Often a lot of industrial action in january, youve been warned ⚠️

  • +11

This morning, spoke with Southern Cross PTV hub in Melbourne.

Conditions of free travel vouchers are….

    1. Coming into Melbourne CBD only -
Eg… Sunshine to CBD and return

    2. Absolutely nil travel from Melbourne to regional Victoria and return
But, forgot to ask regional to CBD….sorry

    3. Must be coming to CBD to see or do something - they will ask you this on form.
      Suggestion…. Google - Melbourne events

    4. Must know specific date you want to visit CBD…. Unable to change dates

    5. Dates -
      Start… 16 December 2021
      End…. 31 January 2022
Unless all vouchers are taken before…..

    6. For further information please call - 1800 800 007
Or visit a PTV hub and ask your questions before the offer goes live on Thursday 16 Dec. Therefore, seeing if this offer is for you or not - saving you time and planning ahead.

    Happy travels to all…

    • Apparently in the T&Cs it says that:

Each voucher entitles from one to five people, as specified in the voucher, adult or child to free travel on all public transport, including V/Line economy services, to and from Melbourne CBD.

I would say "to and from" is different from "to then from" and would not prevent you from going out of the city and then comes back, at least not explicit enough to warrant a fine should any adventurous spirit gets caught in that way.

      • I am planning on using mine to go to day trip to regional victoria in Vline. Seems ok to me reading the Terms and Conditions

  • +1

    Update…..

This covers all public transport in Victoria that travels to the CBD, including:

    Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses
    Regional trains, coaches and buses

  • -1

Nice, but if they really want people to come into the CBD make parking free. Oh that's right, the city council would have to pick up the tab.

  • +15

    Cheers op for the deal.
Took me some time to find the link. Managed to grab one free voucher!

    Here is the link
    https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/more/travelling-on-the-network/go…

    • Thanks for posting this link

    • legend.

    • Only goes up to 24th December?? No jan dates appearing. Will they be revealed later?

      • The other 4 categories have dates till Jan. No idea why they split into 4 categories with same date range

    • Website seems broken now.

  • So, the "voucher" is just a plain text email that you could just edit? …

    • Yep, get one and you are all set for the whole period:)

  • not clear how to get one or not open yet

  • Took ages to get to Christmas vouchers - all gone
All other pages take me to blank screen or Gateway timeout.

  • +2

Not working now. Links go to blank screen.

  • +2

    site getting ozbargained

  • Still down.

  • +2

    Site is down, useless…

  • +2

    typical ptv

  • +3

One of the worst event…..NO instructions at all and hided the link somewhere in their main page. Did not even update in news & event section so nobody knows when they open the portals. And now the portals all down.

    • Link to portals was on the main page, it wasn't hard to find. It's been hammered since at least 7am.

      • +1

On my mobile I have to swipe 4 times before I could see the link. If it is newly added, they should put it as the first one instead of at the second last.

  • +1

the link for the vouchers redirects now to /tarvel-voucher

    haha

    dimwits

  • What a woeful system.

  • +1

    worked now, got them
(worked on mobile, not on pc)

    • Thanks

      • u manage to get as well?

        • Yep, managed to get one. But it seems the website is now down again.

          • @Bunnyqq222: Can I ask is it just a piece of paper or is there like a QR / Barcode on the ticket itself?

            • +2

@HelpfulMilk: It is just an email with your first name and date for when it is valid. No QR / barcode to scan

Terms and conditions: Free Travel to the city incentive

Each voucher entitles from one to five people, as specified in the voucher, adult or child to free travel on all public transport, including V/Line economy services, to and from Melbourne CBD. This voucher is a valid ticket on the date and during the times specified in it – do not touch on or touch off your myki – no refunds will be given. You must display this voucher when requested by staff members and Authorised Officers. The passenger details recorded on the voucher are for issue purposes only and will not be retained for any purpose. Fitted face masks covering your nose and mouth must be worn on public transport.

              • @CodeXD: so if i get one I will be able to amend the dates? need to travel to melbourne for medical reasons and money is a bit tight atm so any bit of penny pinching will help

                • @HelpfulMilk: You choose the date when you request for the voucher, cannot be changed after you've got the email. You can however, request for multiple voucher for each date (will need to fill in the form each time).

  • dam just saw this and the website is down! has anyone been able to get any tickets?

    • Managed to get one - there were still 47,000 or so left at the time.

      • can i ask you to check again please? im getting a "page not working" when clicking on any of the links

        • Oh, apologies, I meant I was able to get one during the brief period it was up again. But it is down for me too now.

          • @ffcc: ah thanks for clarifying. hopefully i can get a ticket and save from buying a bendigo to melbourne ticket!

  • We are experience high demand for tickets. Please try again later.

    • Yup, forgot about this till half an hour ago and haven't been able to sign in to get a ticket :( fingers cross I'll be able to get one

      • I've been close. Around 7am I managed to get the option to choose a date for the Christmas ones, but my date is 28th and the Christmas ones were up until 24th. I got in to some of the others but the page didn't load correctly and there was no ticket amount selection box.

  • Guys, portals opened and I claimed two tickets.

  • It's back up now, 47500+ tickets available.

I think we'll all be fine

  • +1

Was able to claim 3 which will cover my vline tickets for my medical trips! Saved me around $100!!!

  • Down again

  • Do you need to be logged in?

    • no

  • Was working about 11:40, I managed to get a few tickets.

  • Got some now,

  • Only christmas ones are available

  • +8

    JACKPOT!!

    Found a little workaround:

https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/integration/swift#arts (seems to show the most dates)
    https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/integration/swift#xmas
    https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/integration/swift#dining
    https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/integration/swift#shopping

Please note that all categories are essentially the same I think, they are all just free transport tickets to the city, and not for any actual tickets to events (eg. Harry Potter Theatre, Art Galleries etc).

To be the real ozbargainer, you can use multiple email addresses and select different days per email address.

EDIT: might not work now, but worked for me 5 mins ago. Maybe retry the links once in a while

    • +1

      Don't need multiple email addresses.
I just used the same email address to get travel vouchers for multiple different days.
There's no limit per person (that I've encountered so far).

    • Thanks for the links. The xmas one is working fine right now. Still over 40k vouchers available.

    • Awesome work! The Xmas one just worked for me

  • +5

It would be easier if they just made travel free for all for the next 6 weeks. Hardly anyone is travelling at the moment anyway.

The car parks around my way are barely 20% full.

    • +1

Well our government is stingy, they'd like to save their cash here and there for the nuclear submarine!

    • I heard it is very busy in CBD but I guess only locals hang around..?

      • I've been on weekends and it's busy. Maybe cause of dem protestors but beside them seems around 70% pre covid crowds

  • Still more than 42,000 vouchers left in the Christmas event category, date range December 18 to 24.
Can't access the other categories and date ranges currently due to overwhelming demand on website.
