  • Smart…so then you have to buy their overpriced battery as well? Or can you use the one supplied with the first hedge trimmer you buy?

    • I don't own any of these products but it looks like the same battery will work on all of them.

Yep, that's my understanding as well. A mate has these (the whipper-snipper & blower IIRC) & he swears by them.

I'm too stingy, Ozito all the way for me! :p

Ozito FTW! I've been using one of their Li-Ion electric screwdrivers for the last 5 years (I think) and it still runs as well as the day I bought it.

        • I guess this is not a bad good price for a hedge trimmer + chainsaw combo, but my experience has been that buying Ryobi tools has been a false economy (specifically, a whipper snipper and a chainsaw, both of which had numerous issues and died shortly after warranty ended). I would rather buy quality brands (husqvarna, Stihl) for twice as much; in my experience they will last twice as long.

        • I've got tradie mates who use Ozito exclusively…within 3yrs if they wear it out, Bunnings replaces it no questions asked. They always have a spare so for 3yrs they have trouble free tools on the cheap! When one is outta wty & dies they just bin it & replace it with the backup they carry, then buy another Ozito & the circle of tools starts again!!!

The rest of the guys I know seem to love DeWalt; it's very nice gear but it's ridiculously expensive. I can't remember the sums but IIRC the price of one DeWalt buys at least 5-6 Ozitos!

        • Depends what your task is. Those Ozito types often just wont cut it, I bought a drill for $20 for some light work around home and it was basically useless. Had to use all my body weight to push tec screws through and the battery just died straight away. I wired it up to run off the car battery but it still had no guts. The serious trade tools cost money, but you can claim depreciation and the like.

Anyway, reckon I could go a free blower…

          @McCoy,

          Depends what your task is.

What part of 'tradie' did you not get? It's a colloquialism for 'tradesman'; they build shit, and fix other shit & stuff…for a living!

Those Ozito types often just wont cut it,

So we're to presume that you have no direct experience with the brand, since you're ignorantly lumping them in with the $20 Kmart tools! They are very different animals indeed!!!

          I bought a drill for $20

Your first mistake!!! Seriously, twenty bucks…what did you think would happen???

The serious trade tools cost money, but you can claim depreciation and the like.

Yeah, but only if they're your tools of trade. You can't claim them if your only taxable income is derived from driving a desk all day!

  • Can't seem to find running times anywhere…..
The ryobi website talks of them giving the "run times of petrol"…. but I'm not sure what that would be…..

I have the 18V trimmer and blower kit from when they were clearing them out for $199.

The trimmer goes for about 30 minutes, the blower for 10 minutes tops.

The 36V battery is about twice the size of the big 18V li ion, so you could probably double the times for that.

I have the 36V lawn mower, same battery, the battery is good for 1hr on a normal lawn, not as long for longer or tougher lawns. I is good enough to do mine an my neighbours lawns.

I am after the the line trimmer, not included in this deal, damn.

Good deal though +ve from me.

Line trimmer would have been tempting.

having just got some new dewalt gear cheap, and having thrown out my 1yr old Ozito drill, I can't believe the comments above. If your talking electric, I'm sure Ozitos will do the trick (I have an Ozito SDS hammer drill in my garage which is a beast). But for cordless stuff, you really get what you pay for. The Ozito's have very little grunt and even less battery life, when compared to proper trade tools. But it got me out of trouble for a while :)

No builders/carpenters/plumbers/sparkies would be using cordless Ozito on a day-to-day basis. Its laughable. Lots of roofers use the Ryobi impact drivers etc, as they are great value. but i would never buy a cordless chainsaw / brush cutter…

Sorry dude, I didn't realise that you spoke for every tradesman in Australia; or is that the world? Nice of you to take a break from your ACTU spokesman duties to join the party! :p

Now like I said, I've got mates on both sides of the fence. The guys using Ozito get by just fine, and are just as professional and productive as their DeWalt using counterparts; they simply choose not to spend big bucks on tools. Like many OzB'ers, they're thrifty & they've worked out a clever protocol using the long, no questions asked warranty that works to their advantage.

Now, on the other hand the guys who bought DeWalt do have really nice gear, no argument. However, it's not infallible, over (quite a) few beers recently they swapped stories and it seems that their NiCD batteries died just as fast as those in the Makitas, Ozitos & Ryobis! Many have moved on to Li-ion batteries now, but nobody has a horror story in any camp as yet. The upshot of the discussion was that the DeWalt gang were the happiest with their nice gear, but the Ozito lads were ahead financially by a country mile! :)

You need to remember dwain, that the way you do things is NOT necessarily the way other people do things! ;)

  • I'll take the blower.

  • Got the email from Ryobi too. Sounded like a good deal and needed both a hedge trimmer and blower so bought the hedge trimmer from Bunnings yesterday and made a claim online. Hopefully there's enough power in these things to do a proper job.

    • Can you let us know what it's like. Just went down and checked it out also. Thinking of grabbing one.

  • Not happy - Ryobi refuses to even acknowledge receipt of my claim, even though it was made 5 weeks ago.

    • Also noticed that the terms & conditions of the promotion indicate that:

"11. Claimants will be notified by email of their claim submission details."

"13….The gift will be sent to the successful claimant’s mailing address, as included by the claimant on the claim form. Gift will be delivered to successful claimants within 6 weeks of submission of the entry form."

Neither of these things have happened.
