    Great first post OP

  • Is Kaspersky still a top tier antivirus or has it declined?

    • +1

Based on AV-Comparatives latest data in "real-world protection", Kaspersky is practically top of the charts, especially it's (lack of) false positives.

    • +1

It's the best in terms of detection.

    • -1

Norton is better and about the same price.

  • -8

    Blah, blah, blah,… KGB.

    • Is KGB still around ? Should update your spy detection software.

      • +1

I use Kaspersky. It still says KGB

I've just moved back to Windows after being a MacOS user for a good while. Is there honestly any benefit of a paid antivirus over the inbuilt Windows Defender security?

    • +1

IMO, defender has gotten good enough for ~95% of average desktop users, but if you feel you need the extra later of security, this sounds like the cheapest way to do so.

    • +9

Not really, windows works fine. This is more aimed at elderly people who get scared into buying subscriptions

    • +3

Yes definitely better. At this price it is worth using. I tend to install the base internet security version for clients as I find the prompts for extra's annoying and I don't recommend using there password manager (all your eggs in one basket). I use a third party password DB.

As mentioned by scaryspace Windows defender has improved a lot in the last few years but I have seen enough malware sneek through to not trust it … Kaspersky has not had allowed any compromise [ yet ;) ] and again for sub $20 imho it is worth it.

As someone always mentions - there is a very small risk of Russian government involvement with the product, but this product is heavily vetted and if anything was found it would be worldwide news.

    • +2

I find Windows Defender is more than enough as long as you can precautions with torrenting etc. As far as password protection, I've moved to Bitwarden (open source) and couldn't be happier with this as a password manager.

    • +2

Yes, Defender is best if you are not going online !
Just think about so many virus (commonly called Malware) are on websites. Kaspersky will help with all these techniques and defender wont.

PLUS main good point it - secure payment option, where it will secure your browser when you are doing banking or online purchase. This is best for people doing online shopping now & then.

      • +1

Windows10 Defender is good enough even if you’re going online unless all you visit are dodgy websites. Additionally, you can add a VPN and an adblocker such as pihole and you’re pretty well covered. I haven’t used any of these Antivirus “bloatware” in years and never had any issue. A lot of features on these antivirus software are unnecessary.

        • +1

No-one knows which site is dodgy and which not. Now a days, many legit sites are getting compromised and hosting malware, which could be stopped by Kaspersky upon visit - but not Defender for sure.

One of the example is - zero-day exploits.

        • +1

I was more of less like you, but I have stopped relying on win defender. It only takes 1 dodgy site. I have gone back to the tight ass route and do the malwarebytes + Hitman pro 1 month free, uninstall when its up and reinstall but this is cheap enough to forget that for 1 year.

But next thing for me is to find a vpn and ad block for the router

          • @WT: Does adding a VPN to the router adds security? Clicking a malware in an email or link, will VPN protect from it?

            • @EnALup: No, you can still get malware.

            • @EnALup: Yes it can if the VPN offers malware protection. However, you shouldn’t solely rely on this layer of protection for preventing malware.

As an example, look at ProtonVPN’s Netshield feature.

              https://protonvpn.com/support/netshield/

The domain hosting malware needs to be known, and bad guys are always spinning up new domains all the time so it's kind of like a Whac-A-Mole game.

              • @DarkTurtle: Thanks. Got Nordvpn, will check it out if it has similar feature.

          • @WT: Go for FREE Sophos Firewall - XG Firewall - https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-xg-f…

        • Does VPN add a layer of security for banking and other shopping you do?

  • I have window 10 on hp laptop, is it better to have this to protect the virus? thanks

    • +12

Why would you want to protect the virus?

  • +4

Use it for last 20 years and never had any issues

I purchased this exact product from SaveOnIT on Christmas day for the same $13.99, so it must have been this price for a little while.
The main reason I went for this is for the Safe Kids, plus the password manager is pretty good.

I was evaluating it for free for around 2 weeks before buying, even interacted with Kaspersky technical support a couple of times and they were pretty helpful.

  • Not a bad price thanks

  • @device deal has it on $12.90 almost all the time… I renew from them every time

    • +2

I can only see 1 device 1 year for ~$12.

  • A price worth trying. thanks!

  • -1

Looks on ???? for ???? Not bad, for life free.

  • anyone else getting an error when checking out?

    • +2

Yes, Credit Card payment is giving error, try Paypal - just now bought 5 more licenses for my customers through Paypal.

      • thank you, worked now

        • Did you fill in your personal details before you purchased it? Seems too much info required to by a $14 product. Do they really need my address and phone number? I can't find a way to skip this and have a pure guest checkout (ie: email address and then payment details)

  • Do Mac and iOS (or even android) need antivirus nowadays?

  • Comes 14.27 with PayPal?

    • Yep, 2% PayPal surcharge

    • For some reason, I was unable to buy from the OnSaveIT webpage. :( Session out error

  • +1

Seems like the site doesn't want you to check out as a Guest. It keeps returning an error but if you then add a password to create an account, it goes through fine.

  • I have Kaspersky IS was thinking of upgrading to Norton as my subscription ends soon. It caused some issues to my sandisk ultra usb drive during initial sacn

Worth grabbing for a MacBook Pro?

I’ve been using the free version of Avast and it’s working okay, but was also eyeing out some of these options like Kaspersky.

  • +1

I buy this, the 1 PC license though, just for the sake of its password manager. Awesome tool for 10 bucks a year

  • +1

    Nod32 the best

  • Still my Gold Standard after all these years….

  • I got a 60% off offer from Kaspersky but cannot open the offer for the life of me….lol

  • +1

On Mac changes the DNS address and no way to manually change it to my next DNS settings
Pretty annoying so uninstalled it -.-

    • Why would you need it on a Mac if I may ask?

      • Unfortunately there’s enough mac malware out there these days
Used to be niche enough no one bothered to program crap for macs but that’s no longer the reality

  • There’s a few misinformed comments here about Macs and Windows Defender being enough.

I’ll just leave this here so that you can make up your own mind.

A deal on antivirus programs? What is this,2005? Who the (profanity) uses antivirus software anymore, this is literally the dumbest shit I've heard of. Use ublock origin, don't torrent from nobody uploaders and stop falling for runescape tier scams. Common sense is still the best practice, no software will ever replace that. Or just embrace Linux. The only reason AV is even a thing anymore is because absurdly stupid (read:OZbargainers) and/or old people exist. Like no John, there isn't hot singles in your area, you'll always be forever alone.

Password manager 'worth' 18.99? Bitwarden is free and open source.
300mb 'free' vpn/day. 1 whole netflix episode. Doesn't even have a kill switch, a basic necessity.

Please stop giving these drop kicks money and let them die an agonising death.

  • any cashbacks on this?

The Big Antivirus Lie in 2021

    • Really funny video ! I would say this could be true in 1990s !
Once people get hacked or scammed, they would trust - why antivirus is needed. But no point in fighting over it.

      • +1

It's not meant to be a funny video. Did you watch it with understanding?

  • Thank you; purchased. I assume the serial gets emailed in the next few days?
Edit - thanks, got the serial.

  • Paid bay fast pay abn search no serial yet .. 4 hours and waiting

  • I got mine emailed within 5 mins. Check spam.

  • finally able to pay with Paypal after five attempts….
