  • That is a good price, Dan Murphy's has it 5c cheaper per bottle.

So I ordered some from Dan Murphy's, paid with paypal and got the shipping refunded.

I had a look at Dan Murphy's it appears to be $79.99 their for me.

      • That is the online price, I think. If you select a store you can see what the price is there.

        • The $79.99. is the online price as far as their web site says for me.
          Thats why i posted.

      • I had the Eastwood, NSW store selected, when ordering the price was $59.95 / bottle. Sorry don't know why it is different to what you see.

        • Worked for me. Good tip Ssander, I didn't realise you could change the store. Cheers.

    • how did you get the shipping refunded?

  • Excellent price for a fantastic peat/smokey scotch.
Probably cheaper (/ml) then Aussie duty free.

    • +1

It's slightly more expensive than duty free at Sydney airport

      http://www.syddutyfree.com/category/liquor/whiskey/11208-lap…

      $84.99 for 1 litre
      $60 for 0.7 litres ($85.71 per litre)

Local retail is much cheaper however once the cost of an international flight is factored in :-)

      • hehe, well done….If you're flying OS, then it's always cheaper outside Oz.
Last time I was in Singapore, it was 2 for $au75, Kiwiland was $65/bottle. We get so ripped here

I'm sure most of the people reading this thread aren't malt whisky connoisseurs so I'll suggest that they start with something they'll find just as enjoyable for a much lower price:

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_375519/monkey-shoulder-s…

Dans also has Glen Moray Classic and 12 year old for under $40 but IMO they're not quite as good as Monkey Shoulder.

      Dude that stuff is rancid.

I would recommend Cragganmore ($60) and Auchentoshan ($70) both excellent 12 year whiskeys.

        One word…
        Ardbeg.

      • +1

My vote for the Auchentoshan as well.
And if you're feeling spendy, get the 17 (or 18?) yr edition.
        Amazing scotch.

Edit: Also alot of the reviews say Monkey Shoulder has a very harsh finish; No thanks.

2nd Edit: Bahaha did anyone read the review from the moron who buys Glen Fiddich for mixing?! That is just hilarious.

        • +1

If you like the Auchentosha you'll like the Cragganmore :)

Test of a good whiskey, drink it on the rocks or straight. If you haven't got a smashing headache the next day its a good one.

I think you should stick to Passover crackers rather than giving this sort of advice to "non-connoisseurs"
      Monkeys shoulder??? Seriously!!
At least offer something constructive like "big peat" (a suprisingly good 65 dollar islay blend)

Oy Vey…..I suggest a $40 bottle of booze and you schmucks say you should buy something that's $60? I don't like spending that kind of money on booze, especially with the insane tax on spirits we have in this country.

        • +1

Not sure if you're trolling hard or hardly trolling…

Either way seems the crowd has spoken, monkey spirits are bad.

        • I hope my previous post was taken in the "spirit" in which it was intended (ie non offensive light banter).. But on a more serious note… This is a post for a 60 dollar bottle of scotch… You would be unlikely to find a 40 dollar bottle that stacks up to it…

Lol, there is a review on Dan Murphy that says it's johnny red in a fancy bottle lol!

      • +1

8/10 customers gave the monkey shoulder 5 stars.
        One gave it 4 stars.
The other one is the 20-29 year old that gave it 2 stars and suggested that it tastes like johnny red.

Just to make sure I've got it right - this is pronounced La'frog?

"Hey guys, come on over and play some cards tonight. I've got some 10 year old La'frog whisky".

"Sorry man, but the very thought of that has me turning - well - green".

    • +3

Pronounced La-froyg. If your mates don't want to turn up, that's great, more for you.

I rather drink the Regency or Sang Som Thai whiskey compared to that Monkey's piss.

  • Good price for a very nice Scotch. It is very peaty and smokey - might not be to everyone's taste. Still, quite smooth. I recently ran out of a 1L bottle from last o/s trip (purchased duty-free) so this deal is timely.

Lovely dram. But beginners should be warned.. if you've never tasted peated whisky before or don't know what someone is talking about when they say "Islay malt" then I would advise you to try this at a bar or someone's house before buying it. Peated whiskies aren't everyone's cup of tea (at least not straight away).

    • Yes, weirdly enough the 10yo is cheaper & a lot smoother then the more expensive Quarter Cask.

      • +1

I'll have to agree to disagree there. I have to say I prefer the quarter cask. I've gotta ask, did you remember to add a bit of water? Remember its bottled at 48%, and in my opinion definitely benefits from it.

My favourite standard bottling of Laphroaig is the 15 year old. I tried the Blackadder raw cask bottling of laphroaig recently and that was pretty special (though at around 60%, it really took a lot of water)

        • +1

If you can find a friend who is a islay fan and a member of the SMWS…. They have about 8 bottlings from laphroaig.. Everything from an 8 y/o cask strength (something about a balrogs bum) …
And do put trying the 30 y/o on the list of "things to do before I croak"
